This 1.6 GHz Atom processor also includes a power-optimized front side bus of 533 MHz for faster data transfer on demanding mobile applications and a 512 KB L2 cache (which temporarily stores data).

Together with the exclusive ASUS Super Hybrid Engine, you'll enjoy a longer battery lifespan of up to 6 hours, allowing you to stay in touch and be connected for a longer period of time while on-the-go. Customer Reviews:

  • I replaced my EEE900 withthis one and im happy
I had the eee 900 with 4gb running linux. i installed XP on it and i customized XP to only use 500mb of HD space so the 4gb Drive worked fine.
I noticed the battery life on the 900 was severely lacking..almost like it was leaking.
Anyway i loved the little unit and used it all the time for Rosetta stone.
I got rid of the 900 and recently got this 901.

I love this 901. the battery life is rockin! the added webcam has GREAT functionality in low lit room enviroments. came with Skype already installed, out of the box i was making video skype calls with crystal clarity. the added wireless N is a SWEET addition.
I put a 2gb ram chip in this one and it seems to run faster than my 900 did with the 2gb chip (this same 2gb ddr2 chip was in my eee 900)...it must be that Intel Atom processor, im noticing very quick refreshing, and nowhere near as much lag between launching apps. I have to say this little machine is fast enough to do anyhting i want ..i think ill be happy for a long time with it.I even tested it on low power mode and it still blazed through my standard applications that i use,..(windows movie maker) (adobe audition) (photo shop) (rosetta stone) At this point ill just leave it on low power mode because its running fast enough as it is.
I popped in an 8gb SD card and i have all the space i need for my uses...

i am giving this thing 5 stars for what it is.

    Pros
    small , very small lightweight
    excelent battery
fast great machine for most average user tasks
    quality construction
webcam is clear and bright (1.3mp)
PRICE! 274 no tax and shipped from amazon..insane price value!

    cons
smaller keyboard migth annoy people...i would prefer alittle larger.
speakers could be a tad louder..just a tad.
drive D partition not as fast as the C partition that has windows.
(thats the biggest flaw in my opinion)...more info
  • Do you like technical problems?
If you like to spend hours trying to get a new product to work, than this is for you. The real issue started with the fact that Windows is installed on a drive with only 4gb of space, and it needs about 3gb. This steamrolled into more and more problems as I ran out of space on C very quickly. This product is terrible. I bought it to have something "easy" to use. I don't care if it's fast, powerful, cool. I just needed something that was "easy" to take around with me. Instead, I have a small pain in my backside. Don't buy this product....more info

  • Love this for travel or wireless while surfing in bed LOL
This is a very lightweight but high quality machine. It is nice for travel or surfing the internet while lounging in bed or somewhere not near a desk! I would definitely recommend upgrading to the 2GB for better performance. Love the pearl white, everything looks and is top notch quality!

The drawbacks (which I'm OK with) are:

-no cd rom drive (I purchased an external so I could install other products)

-Shift Key on right side is placed wierd so out of habit when you try to click it, you get something else.

-Keyboard is OK but a bit cramped, so no high power entry on this one - but fine for surfing the internet and reading emails, etc....more info
  • Best Buy
The one thing that can make it better is an upgrade on the RAM, otherwise it's the best companion for the frequent traveller....more info
  • It was exactly what I needed
This little jewel is exactly what I needed. I am very happy about it. I can work with XP doing everything I was doing on my full power toshiba 15,4
    ' laptop:

    -emailing with google
    -browinsing with firefox
    - using office for documents and speadsheets
    - using audacity to reharse singing in 4 part harmonies (yes... thhe Intel Atom is able to support this as well)

The screen is remarkable and the size, for me, the right one. It can go in my backpack and the more than 5 hours batteries finally gives me freedom to go anywhere to work.

I am a traveller and I need to call Italy often. This is a portable communication station with video and microphone. I also have a Western Digital portable disk (160GB) actually without any weight and size which provide me all mass memeory I need for picture, music, and so on.

The only drawbacks I see are:

    - I wasted some time to update the touchpad drivers to the elantech version but sometimes i get clumsy with the many possibilities and the scrolling function does not work perfectly with all prograams
    - sometimes you have to be patient with some slowing down of the system, especially soon after booting.
    - as far as concerns with having multiple programs open at the same time, I do not see problem having: firefox, word, excel open at the same time (considering avast running in the background also). Also audacity can run in parallele with firefox and word.
    - I would have preferred a bigger system drive. I am cnstantly concerned about not to have enough space for system updates.

however there is a very helpfull user forum on line where I found solution to many problems. Including the impossibility to use the built in microphone at the beginning.

However, I recommend this netbook. It is not a toy at all. It is an honorable modern computer which may fulfill the real needs of the many people who are not jeeks and spend a lot of money on state of the art vista super-power laptops....more info
  • Eee PC 8.9 12GB XP Home
Very nice gadget for modern nomads.

Goods: size, battery time (five long hours!), price, neat touchpad

  • Great Netbook!
This netbook was a great investment, I was researching which netbook to buy that would satisfy both integrity and portability. This satisfied those needs and more. The battery lasts a whopping 6 hours with wifi and bluetooth on. It comes complete with basically two different office programs to make powerpoint slides and spreadsheets on the go. I am normally an apple user and try to stay away from pc's, but I needed a computer that was more portable. This is definitely a great netbook and I do suggest upgrading the ram, it increases its speed by a noticeable amount. Also the SD expansion slot gives more room for you too hold extra files to increase your space.

  • Falls Short of Expectations
At first blush the ASUS Eee PC 901 was a great idea, with the right size, speed and functionality. The problem is, according to their tech support, the designers hard wired two SD cards to the mother board to use for solid state storage (hard drive). The smaller of the two is 4 GB and has the designation of C: drive with the operating system on it. The second one is 8 GB for storage. But when you use the internet, all temp files are stored, by default, on the C: drive, which starts running out of disk space and starts giving a really annoying message about running out of disk space. This limitation made this design useless for my use. If, at any point they decide to make the C: partition 12 GB, I will buy it in a heart beat.

  • Nicely portable, highly functional with a few shortcomings
I wasn't sure what to expect from this notebook because I ordered it sight-unseen, mainly based on reviews here and its portablity. I've used it mainly for web brousing, word processing, powerpoint presentations, and watching movies on trips. It is fully functional in these areas, and I get about 5 hours from the battery in these mixed tasks. For traveling, it's fantastic due to small size and light weight. Also quite impact resistant inside its (included) neoprene sleve. Toss it in the briefcase or backpack and forget it's even there. Build quality is impressive.

From a speed standpoint, it is about what I expected. Once programs are loaded from the (relatively) slow SDD, they run quite nicely, even switching between tasks. Boot time is repectable, about 20 seconds. One limitation to be aware of is that the SDD is not one 12GB drive but a smaller 4GB (slightly faster) and a 8GB D: Drive. Under my testing, I found that the read/write speeds are as follows: drive C: = 32mb/sec read and 9 mb/sec write. Drive D: = 28mb/sec and 6 mb/sec. This is functional, but not fast by any means...there's definitely a delay while programs load. It is only slightly faster than a fast flash drive or memory card. I plan to upgrade to a RunCore SDD which is supposed to read/write at 75/55mb/sec. The other limitation here is the 4GB main drive will easily get full, requiring altering the windows install or deleting features. Mine had 1.5 GB free from the factory, but after just a few programs added I'm down to about 600mb free. Mine had SP3 factory installed, as of Jan 15th, 2009. It came setup from the factory to not use a virtual disk...this I'm sure helps performance, even more so if you add memory to total 2GB.

The display is fabulous, and much more usable than I expected. Nearly all web pages display without horizontal scrolling. This is a great size computer for toting around (we're going to take it on a trip to Europe.) The 10 inch size eee has a much more usable keyboard and a larger monitor, at the expense of being able to tuck it into a purse un-noticed. I'm sure the hard drive versions are much faster to load programs, but at the expense of shock resistance and power consumption. I'd rate the eee 901 as 4-1/2 stars out of 5....if ASUS had splurged and put faster SDD chips in the machine and set up a full 12GB main drive, I would have rated it 5 stars. My machine will end up costing 470 USD after upgrading components to my standards (370 base + 30 memory upgrade + 70 larger/faster SDD.) Still a good deal, in my opinion, given that the initial price (stock setup) was 599....more info

  • Handy Lil Computer
I've had my ASUS netbook for a month now and am very pleased with it. Though the smaller keys/keyboard take a week to get used to, going back and forth from my regular laptop to it now is no problem.

This netbook is SOOOO portable...slips in my purse, and not too heavy. I am a missionary, and must pack light for trips to foreign countries. With this netbook, i have all the documents and reporting capabilities I need...PLUS a webcam to connect an share back home while I'm on foreign turf! (Will try this out in Uganda next month.)

I got the 6-cell battery device so the usage time without being plugged in will be the greatest. I am using Ubuntu...and Open Office. I have loaded on my favorite CD's...and will plug the computer into a mini-speaker. I'm very happy with this item...and the price was great. A friend of mine got something similar...but his was TWICE the price of mine, with no major advantages....more info

  • Perfect Travel Computer
I was interested in a computer that I could take with me on trips and would be able to unobtrusively take it with me when I left the hotel room. If I was not able to take the computer I wanted one that dollar wise would not be a crisis if it was stolen from my room or rental car.

I researched the netbooks and I had two needs; one that it would be small and inexpensive and that it would haave 802.11 n WiFi. I also wanted a netbook that had a SD slot so I could transfer pics from the camera.

This netbook meets all those requirements. It comes with StarOffice as a substitute for Microsoft Office. It is sufficient for what I need. The only con, and it is probably true with any netbook, is that the keyboard takes some getting use to. I really like the long battery life (check reviews at CNET.com) for long trips without being able to recharge.

I want to buy a CD/DVD drive as I want to add some programs and watch DVDs. I also bought the adapter with the 16gig card to store more data, although I still have 8 gigs left on the standard configuration.

  • Sweet machine
I love it - it sincerely meets my needs as a low energy consuming machine that boots relatively quickly. Just a reminder: advertised battery life is for the "energy saving" setting at lowest screen brightness, so anticipate closer to 5.5hrs of battery life for regular use. Recharging is a snap and the process is extremely quick. I have yet to run into any issues with space, since I tend to use open source products and I got rid of anything I deemed unnecessary. I did buy a 32G SD card on Amazon to hold my "walking around" media such as movies and music, though at home I connect directly to my home server (EX470) so I have unlimited access to all of my media. With built in wireless N I get great connection speed to the server, and consistent internet throughout my house.

Join http://forum.eeeuser.com/ before you buy this Netbook so you can read about issues people have had, hacks to increase speed and deleting unnecessary programs etc... I replaced the RAM with a 2GB stick bought on Amazon of course, will look at replacing the secondary hard drive with a larger one if I ever run into storage issues. The touch screen capabilities look really cool though I am not at that level yet to add this ability.

All things considered, I am very pleased with this purchase. Amazon had the best price available on the internet, I thought the "Free" shipping would take forever and it did not. Netbook came with a soft carrying case which was ideal for me because I want to keep it nice. Keyboard took about a week to get used to, now I have no issues whatsoever typing out a message on AIM, FaceBook Chat or Yahoo messenger.

    BUY IT!...more info

  • False advertizing and rapid failure.
I ordered the ASUS Eee PC 901 8.9 inch Netbook (1.6GHZ Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1GB RAM, 12GB Solid state drive. When the product is advertized with a 12GB solid state drive that is what it should have, not a 4GB solid state drive and an 8GB solid state drive. Within 7 days the 8GB drive went out. I am out of town on business so I am unable to get it repaired till I get home. When it was working it was perfect for my needs. Upgraded to 2GB RAM and that is the only change from the factory. The Windows XP home loaded on the 4GB SSD began giving me low space warnings after doing Windows updates, with no other programs loaded. Disappointing that the NetBook is so crippled at this time and have not had a solid week of use out of it in the three weeks I have had it.

    Hopeful for Resolution...more info
  • NetBook NetBook NetBook!!!
Asus Eee PC is a great product. This is a small notebook/laptop, it is a NetBook. This small computer is not powerful enough to be a true desktop replacement. But, it is mobile and easy to carry. The use of XP home makes using it easy. There is nothing new to learn with this, it just works. The keyboard is a bit ssmall, but that is expected with a small package.

CON - The only drawback is the hard dive space. There is a 4 GB and 8 GB drives on the NetBook. I addd an SC card for an additional 16 GB, but it would be nice if the thing came with a 60 GB SSD....more info
  • Great Product
I upgraded to the EEE PC 901 from a HP DV1000, and it's about the same in terms of performance. The 1.6 GHz performance is just about the same as any other 1.6 GHz PC. Before I purchased this laptop, I use to think 15.4" laptops were very portable. But the EEE PC 901 is insane. I go to college, and carry my laptop with me everywhere. The EEE PC 901 took a great load off of my back. Plus, I can fit the EEE PC into the small pocket of my backpack. The pouch that the EEE PC comes with is enough protection for it. Not that it needs any; the plastics that ASUS uses are very durable. I had mines for over a month, and it is still scratch less.
A lot of people think that ASUS is an inferior brand compared to HP, Acer, and DELL, but ASUS is the #1 motherboard manufacturer. ASUS makes motherboards for those companies. My HP desktop came with an ASUS motherboard in it.
As small as the EEE PC is; it is still upgradeable. There is an extra mini PCI-Express slot and a space for a 1.8" ATA-100 HDD. There is only one slot for DDR2 RAM, which is upgradeable to 2 GB. You can't go wrong purchasing this laptop if you are a student! It is fast enough to do anything you need to do for school work. The screen resolution is good enough to researches. It comes with an Office program. Carrying it around doesn't break your back. Most of all, it is cheap!

Super computer overall for surfing the net, but has too little memory for much else. Even then, it runs out of virtual memory often. It would be nice to offer with more ram, even if it cost more. • Wonderful product, but I sent mine back
I had mine for a week and sent it back to Amazon, but it was my fault for buying the wrong computer. It was perfect for email and surfing the net, but I needed a laptop suitable for all-day word-processing use, which it isn't designed for. I found it strained my eyes and I couldn't type nearly as fast as with a standard keyboard.

However, I was very impressed with the computer's exceptionally small size and weight, and the ease of setting it up and connecting to the net. I also liked the fact that there was a sticker on the keyboard with a toll-free technical support number.

I'm going to try an eee PC with a 10-inch screen now - maybe that will be more suitable for my purposes....more info
  • *** OHHHH, THE GENIUS OF IT... ***
This is a good net-book, specially considering that when you purchase a net-book your main focus should be "portability". I have nothing negative to say about this net-book, really. However, the geniuses a ASUS, they must have come out of a "Taliban think-tank" it's the only explanation I have for the fact that, they sell you a rather small 12 Gb SSD and then (... hold your breath here...) they create two partitions out of it, and for the one where Windows is installed they allocate only 4 Gb, (which as you know, ends up being only 3.5 Gb + or -)

You would say: but of course, the other partition is where the recovery files are... NOOOOO, you get a recovery DVD, for which you need an external DVD drive (not provided, by the way). Given this, I tried to merge partitions using partition Magic, and couldn't. I called on other mightier minds (thinking I was doing something wrong), and they couldn't either.

Bottom line, I got the impression that they do this just to discourage customer from buying this configuration. While the product might be good, ASUS planning has been below poor, decadent I would say. They probably want to push the bigger, more expensive stuff, but for someone that already owns several desktops and laptops this net-book is not a winner. I will simply run the idiotic recovery and give it to my wife so she can carry it in her purse (that's about the only thing it might be good for) ...more info

  • Just Right For Me
I've had my Eee 901 for two weeks now. I purchased it with the idea of reading books when I was out and about, for mail and web access and for reading in bed. For that, it is perfect.

Color and resolution of the screen is very good, boots quick, and is just what I wanted.

The keyboard is too small for regular typing but I knew that going in. As with all new PC purchases, I had to cull the desktop trash programs and 'offers'.
