Customer Reviews:

  • Great Product
This is a great product. I purchased it mainly to back up my files and hold the bulk of my media files. I've freed up a lot of space on my laptop.

The drive is quiet. And, has quick access to my files.

I'm very happy with the product thus far....more info
  • Happy with my Hard Drive
This is a great product. I can backup my entire computer no matter where I am. I have a card rubber "skin" (case) for protection so I take it with me when I travel. Very easy software to setup and use. 5 stars!...more info

  • Perfect external hard drive
I have been using this portable hard drive for almost 1 year and a half and I have no complain whatsoever. It is working so well I am amazed and I can tell you I really don't treat as carefully as I should. I plug and unplug it without warning, I've brought it in very tough environment and it worked like a charm.
It is tough, small, silent and it feels as fast as using the computer internal hard drive. It is one of the best electronics purchase I have made (and I make a lot of them)....more info

  • Great Product
I really like the stylistic aspects of this hard drive. It is small enough to take anywhere you want to take it. The drive itself is very easy to use. It does have a significant weakness and that is the fact that it solely depends on the usb port for its power source. My laptop could not actually handle the power that the passport hard drive required and I kept getting an error message about a power surge. I fixed that problem by buying a powered usb hub to plug into my computer and then connected the portable hard drive to my laptop that way. That is my one complaint about the portable hard drive, but it was a simple fix that added about $25 dollars to what I spent on the hard drive itself....more info

  • Defective
I put a whole bunch of important files on this ext. hard drive and then I learned that it was defective. Apparently, Western Digital has no quality control standards at their Chinese production factory. :(

  • Luv this little gem
I bought this to make backups of my Acer One Netbook with a SSD and ended up using it as my HD. it's small(fits in a pocket), light, fast and just plug it in and go. For the $$$ can't be beat if you need a HD or backup for any laptop or netbook....more info
  • So far, so good.
I purchased this drive for the purpose of transporting large quantities of files for access between work sites. It's fast and so far very reliable. Other features include a simple connectivity light, and flashing data transfer light (one is the same).
Here's a technical note: if at first the drive isn't recognized by your desktop PC's front panel (wired) USB ports, try the ones in back that are part of the motherboard itself. Sometimes front panel USB ports--and some on older laptops (which can be wired as well)--lack the power to run the drive.
Good luck, this drive will most likely suit your needs....more info
  • Mostly OK
Device works fine with two laptops, but has a problem on the PC--a Dell XPS420 w/ RAID 1 and Vista SP2. It will not Safely Remove, claiming some program is still running it. Disconnect it anyway, and then when reconnected it will not appear in Windows Explorer but will appear in Device Manager. Must Restart to see it again. Must be system-specific....more info
  • Did not work with my PowerBook G4
My computer met the requirements on the amazon page but it would not work with my computer. After doing some research I found out that it requires 1000mA and my PowerBook G4 only gives off 500mA through its USB port. If you are going to get this make sure your USB port gives off 1000mA. ...more info

  • Great value for this amount of portable storage
Hard to believe there could be so much storage in something only slightly larger than a deck of cards (and not even as thick) but it's true. The transfer rate could be faster but for $79 I am not going to complain too much!...more info

  • What more can be said? It's a great portable hard drive
I bought this hard drive three months ago and waited before I wrote a review. After reading other reviews before my purchase, I was a bit nervous that it would stop working soon after I bought it. I had no need to worry though. It has been working perfectly. It's not just the reliability I appreciate, I have also found this hard drive really durable. I travel a lot and bring it with me. This hard drive has survived being jostled around a lot. That's more than I can for other portable hard drives I've had in the past....more info
  • Good item for $$, Poor sinc software
This is a good deal for the dollar. It is very portable and built well. The only major flaw is that the sinc software crashes and shuts down frequently. ...more info
  • great product except you need special cable
it worked fine but I had to wait for a month for WD to send a dual USB cable for it to work on my laptop. remember the HD need alot of power to run and single USB port may not provide enough power.

WD support is not all that great...

  • Disappointed this time
I bought this to upgrade from a Western Digital 250 GB portable hard drive that I've had for a year and a half and had very little trouble with. I had that drive attached with Velcro to the top of my laptop, and it worked great (much safer than having it bang around in my travel bag separately). It eventually got touchy about the cable connection; sometimes disconnecting when the cable is bumped. (Manufacturers: please make a snap-in mini-USB connector instead of letting the contacts take the abuse.)

However, this new drive is not reliable. It sometimes can't be found by Windows XP, and I have to disconnect it and reconnect it for it to be recognized. It's also a bit noisier than the previous one, which together make me suspicious that it's a bad drive that will fail on me at any time. As a result, I constantly back up to the old drive, which I had intended to use as an archive (and do occasional backups of new files to an external drive; my important work is done on the laptop drive and backed up daily to the portable drive). But since the old drive is only half the size, that won't last.

I will probably buy another portable drive from a different manufacturer to try to get one that I feel I can trust. Then I'll just use this as a portable backup drive that I'll occasionally sync. Not completely worthless, but certainly disappointing....more info

  • western digital passport 320 gb
    great product. easy to use.

the only issue is the estimated backup time was much longer than it actually took. it's probably related to my computer. but the initial estimate of 4 days almost made me return it. i started it and went out to dinner. when i returned the process was complete....more info
  • Good & cheap option
It's a money worth and really reliable portable hard drive. I had seen it in many stores and I hesitated if it was durable and reliable but after seen the reviews I decided to buy it and I don't have any claim at all so far....more info
  • Great little backup drive
I purchased the WD Pasport drive to replace a 3.5" USB drive that had failed. It turned out to be a perfect solution to the nightly backups of my desktop PC. It's small (2.5" harddrive), quiet, and only spins up when being used. Since, it is powered by the USB cable and does not require external power, I have one fewer power cable in the wiring mess on the floor.

The drive came formated with fat32 which has a file size limit of little under 4GB. Since I'm using the drive for image backups, I wanted one large file rather many 4GB files to keep track of. So, I had to convert the drive to NTFS using the convert on the commandline. Alternatively, I could have formated the drive for NTFS.

The drive is 320GB which might be too small for you, if you are storing a large volume of photographs or videos on your harddrive.

I will definitely will buy another one when the need arises....more info
