Designed for those who have valuable information they wish to keep secure and private, the Maxtor BlackArmor product is an attractive, portable solution that provides unparalleled security for direct attached storage devices. Using Seagate Secure technology, Maxtor's BlackArmor drive is designed to keep data locked up and protected in the event of loss or theft. Seagate Secure technology is a hardware-based encryption, making the encryption transparent to the user and free of complicated installation and use procedures required by software based security. The Maxtor BlackArmor external storage solution uses a government-grade AES encryption certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to deliver the strongest commercially available data security available for external storage.

The Maxtor BlackArmor product provides transparent, real-time encryption of all the data on the device, not just selected files; providing performance and ease of use advantages over manual software-based security controls. The BlackArmor product also puts all security keys and cryptographic operations within the device, delivering stronger protection against hacking and tampering than traditional software alternatives. The BlackArmor product's key encryption technology can also securely wipe out the data for simple, cost-effective redeployment or disposal of the product - an important capability for organizations of all sizes.

The sleek and slim design of this hard drive--only measures 5.17 x 0.67 x 3.32-inches (H x D x W). "What does every small business need more than storage? They need secure storage. This year's winner – the Maxtor BlackArmor – delivers more than cavernous capacity and data backup; it offers total drive encryption.

The 160 GB external drive is protected by 128-bit AES hardware-based encryption. Your password provides access to your data, and without it, no one can use the drive. If you travel with the drive and it's lost or stolen, no worries. Without that password, the drive might as well be a brick. Word to the wise; don't forget the password."

Customer Reviews:

  • Apple Mac users should look elsewhere
This drive isn't supported in Mac OS X and Seagate/Maxtor appear to have no plans for supporting any operating system other than Windows.

An alternative for Mac users is the Lenovo Secure Drive (although it has to be reformatted), but Amazon doesn't sell it directly.

  • leave other "clunks" at home
just so i clarify, the Black Armor is not one of those portable drives you carry around with a clunky power supply/cord. on top of its security features, which was really easy to set up, the Black Armor has a decent design in my opinion. in times when you hear about data thefts and compromises, the Black Armor definitely stepped up to do the job in securing all your data in case it gets lost or stolen. the transfer rate isn't too bad either, although it ain't the faster ones compared to competition; personally i can trade a little speed for protection.

one thing about this drive however if you are 'lazy' like me sometimes, is that you have to type in password every time you connect the drive, even if it's on the same system. perhaps this process can be improved later by ways of assigning digital signatures to auto authenticate between the system and the Black Armor. oh yea, it's a bit pricier than the competition. aside from the above, it's a great little drive!...more info
  • Nice, sleek
Nice, sleek. Security is a bit overkill for the music and photos I'm keeping on it, but nice to know its there I guess....more info
  • Good way to secure your files
Got this drive because I was too lazy to carry around a power supply with my external hard drive and the encryption was a nice thing to have. The hard drive looks nice and sleek, and of course, no external power supply was needed.

Setting it up was quite easy and self-explanatory. After plugging the Black Armor into the USB, a window came up for setting up a password. After a couple quick questions, I was on my way transfering files. I moved a couple of big files to the hard drive and the transfer speed was about 25 MB a second.

Only thing bad about this drive is that it does NOT work on linux. So don't expect to be moving files from your windows box to your linux box....more info
  • sleek drive
Pretty sleek drive. Nice exterior enclosure and portability. If you need security and portability this is the drive for you....more info
  • Drive will not mount properly
The partition with the utilities will mount on my system but as soon as I unlock the drive it unmounts and is no longer recognized by the Windows XP OS. This drive is too finicky - all I wanted is one to mount up and do backups too. Online help is not good. I wish I would have never bought this drive....more info
  • Not for Mac users - Beware!
Having a drive say it's for Windows is fairly useless information these days. Mac users are used to buying external drives, which are almost always formatted in the PC FAT format, and reformatting them for Mac use. But this drive won't let you reformat or erase it - it won't even mount. Even the latest version of DiskWarrior couldn't even locate, much less mount, this drive. The manual states that erasing the drive is an option if you don't mind losing all data, but that's not even possible as far as I could determine - not from Macs running OS 9, or OSX Panther, Tiger or Leopard.

Maxtor/Seagate needs to do a better job of giving detailed information on the outside of the box, not just in the users manual you don't see until you've bought the thing and taken it home. Finding Mac preformatted drives that were made in this century is difficult at best (Fry's Electronics, the largest computer store in my area, doesn't stock a single one).

Maxtor's website was down when I tried to get tech support, and calling them only brought me to a pre-recorded message saying their tech support system was down. So Mac users looking for a portable bus-driven drive, look elsewhere. This might be good for Vista users, but for the ever-growing number of Apple users, it's a good idea gone bad....more info
  • Apparently no support is available
The drive I received doesn't appear to work. I paid $50 for somethign that sits and beeps.

Maxtor/Seagate provide a support forum where several other customers have posted requests for help with the same kind of problem and never received any responses. The have a mechanism that allows you to submit a support ticket and never respond.

Perhaps other users have received devices that do more than sit and beep; some may even be able to store data. In the case of the product I received however the best rating I can give it as a disk drive is the worst rating that is available....more info
  • Nice backup device
I would give this product a 5 star, if I could figure out why it was disconnecting from my computer on it's own. Otherwise, great fast secure backup device. Easily transfers a backup from my main computer and restores on my laptop. Of course, once you disconnect, you have to reenter the password, but this is the security that I was looking for.
Great price and aside form unplugging and restarting occassionaly, I realy like this drive....more info
  • Great Product!
Not only does this device perform well, it looks really great!! I've bought several 2.5 portable HDs in my time and all of them were very boring looking. With the hardware-based full-disc encryption technology if an invalid password is keyed, it prohibits access to your data. Backup software that it comes with can automatically back up your personal data that are for your eyes only. And if you were to lose it, you have peace of mind that no one else would be able to access your sensitive data. ...more info
