Customer Reviews:

  • excellent external drive
If you have data that you don't want open to prying eyes, then this is the drive for you. It's compact, roughly 3x5, light weight but it feels very substantial. It's plug and play and does not require external power since it works off your USB port. However for those with older computers that may not have enought juice to power the drive, there is an optional USB cord that can be purchased. Aesthetically, part of the drive is in a matte black finish while the top portion is a glossy black. There are two blue lights that indicate the drive fucntioning. The included USB cord is short but works even when plugged into a USB hub.

But the thing that made me buy this unit was its hardware based, high grade military encryption. You need a password to access the drive; set up is easy and straight forward and once you create your password, your stuff is seriously protected. Just don't forget it; according to Maxtor, there is nothing that can be done to recover your data. Nothing!

Each time you shut down or remove the USB from either the computer or the drive itself, your data is automatically protected and will require your password for access. I can't recommend this drive highly enough. I've always had to buy password softare of various kinds to keep my data safe and private. With this drive everything on it is protected in one fell swoop! Just a note, Case Logic makes a case that fits this unit perfectly for those who have to commute or travel. I really like this external drive; I have one for each of my computers. Trust me, this relatively inexpensive drive is worth every penny. ...more info

Excellent product. However, this product does not work with Linux. Don't forget your password....more info
  • Black Armor Best encrypted Portable Drive
I have been looking for a hardware encrypted portable drive in this price range ($120) for a while. I compared it to the "eGo Encrypt" and the "La Cie" drives. The Black Armor drive is stable and has the easiest software interface for backup and password changes. Its fast and rock solid. It requests for a passwork when you connect to a foreign PC. Perfect ! (If you have a MAC, suggest you investigate the La Cie encrypted drives - not sure they have a portable yet though)...more info
  • Best mobile back up drive I have ever had!
Love this Maxtor (Seagate) drive. Reasonable price. Hardware encryption with password is secure and simple and the drive comes with a nice and simple MaxtorManager utility to manage the drive. 100% reliable operation and works well with BackUp Genie or other back up software. I bought the 5400 rpm version. There is a new 7200 rpm version out now but it is more than twice the price and I am sure it would not make that much difference to me. Look for it if you think you need the speedier drive. The back up software included with the drive is compresssed and not soo good, therefore I recommend a mirroring program like back up genie where you can directly access the backed up files without restore operation required. Anyway this Maxtor drive is fantastic!...more info
  • When security matters
I am extremely pleased with this Maxtor Black Armor. Security is very important in these days and this drive gives me piece of mind. If you value security then buy this drive; otherwise, purchase a 1T drive for a little over $100 without. There is more than enough space for storage and it's small enough to fit in your pocket. ...more info
  • BlackArmor incompatible with PGP encryption software
Our testing of this external drive found that its BlackArmor Manager Configure software is incompatible with PGP encryption software (including PGP WholeDisk and PGP Desktop). Postings on Seagate's own support site shows that Seagate was made aware of the problem last year, but no fix has been forthcoming. I've notified my purchasing department to block all individual and volume purchases of this drive until Seagate resolves the issue....more info
  • Drive is useless
Most drives that come with encryption software can easily be removed by reformatting. This drive fails to have any method of disabled or removing the encryption software. Also the software will only work on windows which makes it completely useless for me as I only run Linux and Mac. ...more info
  • Good product--poor seller
I bought this product as a new product on Amazon, as I did my first 160G version of this drive product (from another vendor). Unlike my first product, this item was obviously opened, the box was in very rough shape and the cloth storage bag was missing. This was SUPPOSED to be a graduation gift. I wrote to this vendor through Amazon and received no reply. This is terrible. I was lied to by Amazon and the vendor. This item WAS opened, it WAS used and I was ignored when I asked for a simple replacement or refund. I may never do business with either.
CHOOSE YOUR VENDOR CAREFULLY AND REVIEW THEIR WEBSITE AND DESCRIPTION CLOSELY!
The product is great--maximum security, easy to setup and I back up my hard drive every two weeks in only a few minutes. This drive is truly pro gear with great software!...more info
  • A Good Product
So far this drive seems to be a very good deal. It was easy to install and backs a lot of material, which I hope will be stored safely for a low price....more info
  • Abysmal drive!
Yeah, ok, the drive is good if you ABSOLUTELY need the encryption software on it but then again, what are you doing that you NEED TO HAVE the encryption software? I got the drive because I found a great deal on it, but when i tried to remove the software like I've done with multiple other drives, it doesn't let you. Called Seagate and they even tell you that you can't do it. So if that's the case, then they should put that warning in BIG BOLD LETTERS on the box prior to purchasing so the consumer knows since now this drive is useless to me....more info
  • Very good external hard drive
This is a great product with a lot of storage space and quality features for a very good price. I picked this up at Office Max and after using it for a while was very satisfied with my purchase- but once I checked Amazon I saw that I paid over $40 more than I should have! Oh well.

Overall the password feature is pretty slick and nice to have that kind of security.

The drive came with a handy protective slip case to store it in while not in use. It is remarkably small, compared to what I used before, and takes up hardly any desk space. It is powered through your computer via USB which is extremely convenient not having to deal with any power cords. I have backed up 2 of my computers here at work and have taken up very little space on the drive so I expect to get a lot of use out of it. The managing interface installed on the drive is very easy to use and reliable.

I've had hard drives crash on me before so if that happens with this I will amend my review accordingly- so far so good though....more info
  • Watch out if use older laptop.
To me, this is a great conception of a needed product. I get so tired of messing with things like Pretty Good Privacy whole disk encryption. This allows one not to have to use that sort of complicated (and problematic) software solution to keep back ups encrypted at the local level.

I have only one problem with this product, so far. I use an older Sony laptop for managing my whole backup world. Unfortunately, the power on the USB bus for the Sony is inadequate to power this drive. While Maxtor says you can purchase a supplementary power supply for it (what a hassle), I do not see it available yet in accessories on their website.

It does run fine on my newer Thinkpads. So, main point here is to just beware of power issues that will maybe be hard to solve for the time being if you are using an older computer with a less powerful bus for the USB devices.

UPDATE: The problem was not power on USB bus. When fully powered, the drive still does not work on my older laptop. Reinstalled software several times, including update from Maxtor. It just does not work on the computer I most needed it to work on. This sucks. They said it might be because I was also running Pretty Good Privacy software and that their software to run the drive was very fragile and people often have to stop other things running (esp security software) to make the drive work. So, think about that. First off, it does not seem to be the problem for me, either. Turning off PGP does not fix the problem I'm having. But the other thing worth thinking about is what they advised me. So, one buys this because they want to make data very secure, but they know that there are a lot of problems running the device when using a system with various security enhancements running. Hard to figure out how much sense that makes!

So, this drive may be useful for most. My guess is that you need pretty new computer (though, the one i want to run this on is not ancient and runs service pack 3 of XP pro) and you need not to be running too much else that is complicated in the security realm. I think if I were just wanting to use this as a back up on my Thinkpad, there would be no big problem. But since I most wanted to use it as a backup to another drive that is encrypted with PGP, and transfer files between those two drives, I'm pretty much out of the money I paid for this. ...more info
  • Not Suitable For Corporate Use?
I bought the BlackArmor 320GB to review as a possible site-wide solution for protected storage. In my opinion it's unsuitable for situations where (1) multiple users may access a PC, (2) users might expect to walk away from the PC leaving the drive attached, or (3) users don't have administrative rights on their PCs.

As another reviewer already mentioned, the drive remains decrypted even when the Windows system is logged off or rebooted. That seems to be a poor design decision to me, as it means that an unprivileged user on the same machine can access the "protected" data simply by logging into the system, or by rebooting the system into a different OS (as easy as booting a CD containing MS-DOS). In that case, the data can be read or overwritten.

Also, before purchasing I contacted Seagate's pre-sales technical support and asked a question based on my understanding of the way the drive works, gleaned from reading their support forum postings. I asked, "is this accurate, that administrative rights are required for initial installation, but once the drive's been installed on a particular machine, it can be accessed by an unprivileged user?" I asked, anticipating that our system admins could perform a one-time installation and then let users run as non-admins for the bulk of their work. I was answered in the affirmative, which is NOT the case: administrative rights are required to "unlock" the drive; if (other than in the problem scenario described above) a non-admin attempts to run the launcher program, he'll receive the message, "Please run this application in administrative mode" (or words to that effect).

The support executables (running in memory and viewable in Task Manager) also conflict with my (pretty basic) setup, such that CD/DVD reading and burning sometimes fails, as if no media were present. That might be unique to my system (for instance, corporate policy disables autostart) but with the popularity of autostart-based attacks, similar policies might become more common.

Anyway, my recommendation would be to approach BlackArmor with caution if your circumstances are similar to those described above. Hope this helps someone ... ...more info
  • Compatibility issues
This disk has compatibility issues. That would not be so bad if it were possible to wipe the encryption out and use it as an ordinary hard disk, but it is not. Not even if you are willing to dismantle the device and use only the SATA mechanism inside. I would have to go back to 1983 to find a hard disk drive so disappointing. I would never buy a BlackArmor product ever again. I'm still using it but it is very limited in what I can use it for, unlike other manufacturers' products....more info
  • Peace of Mind
I've owned this drive for over 6 months and use it everyday as my primary work drive. It's been reliable and fast considering I do engineering drawings and have not had a problem with latency. I work with sensitive material and feel a lot better knowing that if my laptop gets stolen, the drive is useless without the password. In addition, I carry the drive separately in my pocket and can access files from different computers wherever I'm at. Strongly recommended if security is an issue....more info
