Customer Reviews:

  • I expected more from this Item...
I like it, but I don't love it. The Hawking dish doesn't quite perform as it should for the price($90-110). In fact, it didn't perform too much better than my stock wifi adapter in my HP tower! However, if your application for this device will be with a notebook or netbook, then I highly recommend. Just not for home use. I would buy the Hawking N repeater instead and upgrade the antennae for home applications as I have done.

Since I feel this to be more of a mobile applicable product and less for home use I can only give you a decent rating on this one Hawking, better luck next time. 3 tars baby. ...more info
  • Worked well and solved my problem.
I like the product very much and it has allowed me to receive a signal from across the street at a very good level. I was not able to connect to this WiFi signal before.

The only reason I didn't rate it a 5 is because the dish has only one direction of adjustment and cannot be tightened to stay where you want it. I would like to see a multi-way swivel that could be secured when you are pointing to the signal you want. That way, you could mount the base where you want it and, then, direct and secure the dish when you get the best signal.

Otherwise, it is a very good design and works well....more info
  • Hawking HWDN1
I have only been using this product for a week now, and am learning more as time passes. Right off the bat it has at the very least doubled the number of available Wi-Fi signals that I knew existed from my desk. Also, it seems that the height that the antenna is placed in your location is important, as it can greatly increase the received signal. All-in-all I am impressed with this product. Thumbs Up!...more info
  • Great for positioning and height reception
I've had this dish for over a year. Read everything I could before getting it. I've had an older Hawking 'card on a cable and a stand, usb' and that was just adequeate. Also my notebook built in screen antenna had problems, as I couldnt orient it through height and positioning and still use it,althought it seemed a very good receptor. I needed something that could be positionally focussed and extended through height.

I get free wifi due to a apt. building nearby(multiple sources; emanating from apts up to 2 stories high) but needed some height above their rooftops. By placing mine at a nearby window 2nd story, pointed and at as much height as possible...the mission was accomplished.
The supplied software is a bit on the 'just adequate' side of things.
Sometimes it requires killing and restarting and sometimes reinstalling.
Additionally the green connection light on the front is always pointed
    away from me and useless.

You learn on how to point and focus on good signals.
Overall, I'm getting good connections between 2 free faraway sources, coming through a jumble of 2 story apt buildings, somewhat intermittent through the day, but provides me good serviceable internet 80-90% of the day.

  • not as good as the cheaper version
I own, from Amazon, the cheaper HWU8DD(increases WIFI 300%), this HWDN1(advertised 600% increase) may be defective or misadvertised b/c it was much weaker than the HWU8DD I already own. Some other reviewers seemed to have similar experiences....more info
  • It works, it works!
This adapter seems to work quite well, although we have only had it for a few days. Here are a couple comments:

    1. Under Windows XP, the Hawking wireless configuration program does not want to connect to weak signals. The Windows wireless configuration program seems to work better.

    2. This adapter also works with Ubuntu (Linux) 8.04, using NDISWrapper. The adapter's chipset is the Ralink RT2870. After XP installation, the rt2870.sys and .inf files (for use with NDISWrapper) are available in the Program Files\Hawking\HWDN1 Wireless LAN Card\Driver directory. You can point to rt2870.inf in this directory (on a Windows partition) from Ubuntu's Windows Wireless Drivers tool (or copy the .sys and .inf files to something like a USB memory stick and carry them to an Ubuntu machine). The driver was installed instantly, and the adapter works without rebooting Ubuntu....more info
  • Not quite the power I thought I was getting but works.
Well, I bought the HWDN1 because of it being supported in Ubuntu and it works there no problems.......but just for testing purposes to see if it was as good as what I read from some of these comments. I hooked it up to my laptop which has internal wireless and sorry to say my Atheros AR9281 with XSPAN puts this satellite to shame. At least two bars more reception with internal wireless. So it is known I was hooking to a wireless 'n' Linksys with MIMO so neither adapter should of had an advantage over the other. One more bit of thought though the Hawkins did get better reception than the Linksys USB 'n' adapter that is listed on the router's box as "for best performance use:", so it does fine job but Atheros has got something special with their new XSPAN AR9281 chipset. Compared all on 64bit-Vista Home Premium....more info

  • Unhappy customer
I've had this product for 3 weeks, it won't load the driver. I've called India for customer service, can't understand them, so they got upset and told us to go online and load the driver from the Hawkings website. Did it still no luck. Can't get any reply from e-mails. So I guess it just sits there and looks pretty on my table. No help what soever. I would never rate this item a 1 but they had no lower scores. This is the first of numerous items I have ordered on the web that I have been really frustrated with. I will send this item back. If anyone else wants to order this Hawkins Wi-Fi extender, my advice to them is "Don't do it"...more info
  • Mother loves it!
Purchased as a gift for Mom. She wasn't connecting wireless in the house with her desktop. Hooked up this bad boy and now she can even get her neighborhood friend down the streets connection with more than 50%. I almost didnt get this product and went with the vertical directional antenna. Then I was at Newegg and saw all the great reviews on this piece and had to get it.

Glad I did! Every ones happy when Mom is....more info
  • Works Well
This product works great when you use it correctly. I use it with Ubuntu Linux and it worked right out of the box without any configuration. My Thinkpad x200 has a nice wireless N card but this connects to hot spots that the Thinkpad can't even see.

Remember this antenna is directional not omnidirectional like most antennas. Therefore, if it is not pointing at the access point you want, your internal card may get a stronger connection....more info
  • It Works! Can not get on internet with my new laptop with built in card. But when I hook up This little Hawk,I can!!!!!!!!! .
I live in a large City ( Memphis Tn.) Without this I can not get on the internet with my new laptop in my bedroom. But when I connect this little hawk,(just pointing toward a neighbors source,)I am on with only one bar showing on signal strenth meter.Took it outside in front lawn and no problem. But if you plan on using it out doors it's not water proof and If you need distance between computor and little hawk you need a USB repeater cable....more info
  • Very rugged and reliable connection.
Recently purchased the Hawking HWDN1 dish, to replace Hawking HWU8DD dish. It has a much stronger link status in the same position as the old dish, usually better than 95% verus 50-60%. The dual reciever helps also.

I am using the same software as before, XP home SP3.

Main things I have noticed are--

    1) Connection is very stable.
    2) My laptop is quieter, it's not going crazy to keep a connection.
    3) No longer have to reboot to get a connection back, as with HWU8DD.
    4) With ~ 20 feet of USB ext cables, it works perfectly.

All in all, it's like having a real cable Internet connection, very rugged / reliable and fast. I'm totally satisfied with it.

If it's like the Hawking HWU8DD, make sure you put it in a water proof
container for outside use. My Hawking HWU8DD died due to rain real quick....more info
  • Great Adapter
This is a great adapter. I had tried another brand and could only pick up an intermittent very weak signal. But this adapter picked up a very good signal at top speed. ...more info
  • Works As Advertised!
I was a little skepticle about buying this product at first since most products like this are complete wastes of money, but this one works great! It's EXTREMELY easy to install and within minutes I had 5 new connections that I never was able to access before.

Pros: Works as advertised, relatively small, easy to install, works GREAT on XP AND Vista

    Cons: somewhat fragile design

Also note that many networks these days are security enabled, so if you're buying this to try to steal you're neighbor's internet-- you MAY not be able to do so without a password. However, this is still a great product....more info
