  • Good GPS, horrible software
This is the first item, in years of order from Amazon, that I have ever returned (the return process with Amazon, btw, is wonderful!). The GPS with this software is very good, it gets a signal quickly, and is very accurate. It does not (which is what led to my returning the item) however, work well with other software. There's an application that you have to load to make the GPS appear in software like Steets & Trips (it converts the USB signal to a COM port) which is more hassle then I wanted to deal with.

The software, however, is HORRIBLE. I can't express in words how bad this software is. I work in IT for a living, and I work with many different software packages every day. I spent about 16 hours working with the software, trying to learn how it "did" things, and working around it's issues. I was trying to plan an upcoming trip to Yellowstone; none of the points of interest were hitting; I was entering GPS coordinates for the hotels I'm staying in, and the overall process (planning a single trip, 7 waypoints) took almost 4 hours. It was just horribly complicated, and incredibly frustrating. After going through that disaster, I decided to try a competing product, Streets and Trips 2009 (free download available).

Using S&T, I planned the entire trip in about 30 minutes. EVERY single hotel I'm staying in was immediately picked up; the longest part of the process was figuring out how to tell the software that I was stopping in a location for the evening. It was SO much better then this product's software that I purchased another GPS (Hulox M1000) and decided to send this one back. I realized that, even if I did eventually learn the software, my co-pilot (girlfriend) would never figure it out, and she'd hate me forever for making her try.

This software is so poor it shouldn't even be sold; I've used alpha software that's more refined and easier to use. The GPS is great, but if you want to use it with another product, you will HAVE to use the serial port emulator (a deal breaker for me), another piece of software to load on your mapping computer.

I realize that some people like the Street Atlas interface; but, trust me, if you've never used mapping software before, you will absolutely hate it; it reminds me of a DOS program that's been ported to Windows. ...more info

  • Wrong way on a one way
    Simple review,

The software told me to turn the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

I had a chance to use the Streets and Trips and I was impressed with the routing software and the user interface.

I doublt that the Delorme product will be around much longer. I purchased it because of the company's reputation of great topographic map software, but this product is dangerous....more info
  • Delorme LT-40 is the best yet!
I have had the opportunity of using Delorme's Street Atlas 2009 with their new Lt-40 GPS for about two months now -- using it for navigating from Indianapolis to Tennessee and Indianapolis to Colorado. The map product is excellent, and the LT-40 GPS is very quick and extremely accurate. Anyone who is serious about GPS navigation ought to highly consider this combination on their laptop. Not only is the screen so-o-o much bigger than those little "other guys" that you pay so much for, and the search engine is superior -- especially the GPS "radar" feature -- but the whole package costs less than half -- in some cases just a quarter of the "other guys" product. I have been using the Delorme Street Atlas and their Topo Maps for more than seven years. The 2009 version with LT-40 GPS is the best yet! You'll be glad you bought it! No complaints whatsoever. I'll gladly continue to purchase Delorme products through Amazon (Amazon's service is outstanding!). ...more info
  • Great Product -- Requires minimal reading
I've had a chance to own and use the DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2009 for a few days now. I must say I'm impressed. I'd like to throw in a little bit of honesty though. Having used other GPS devices in my car, I thought I was going to be able to rip open the box, sprint to my car, and talk to my new Gadget like it was HAL-9000 from Stanley Kubricks Space Odyssey. Poor assumption -- It turns out that I needed to do a little bit of reading first. So back to the manual. After spending about an hour reading the F1-key help menus, I was able to navigate the included software like an old pro. I discovered that the included GPS receiver is able to get a good fix on multiple satellites in under 30 seconds. I'm willing to wait 30 seconds if it helps me save a half hour by not getting lost and cussing like a sailor. The receiver was able to maintain a solid group of satellites even when I drove under canopy of trees and through tall buildings. I planned a couple of routes with multiple stops at points of interest along the way and found the experience of following the voice and screen prompts along the way very simple. There are several navigation views to choose from depending on what you want to see on the screen. I like the two dimensional view for planning trips. It shows your heading (Will the sun be in my eyes?) and info on points of interest along the way. The three dimensional navigation view is great for getting there. The maps are clear and easy to read. I like to opt to see the GPS data to show my speed, heading, and elevation.

Minor complaints - I took a couple of obscure back roads to test the maps data accuracy and found that while the GPS is able to correctly position me on the maps as I travel, the voice prompt would keep telling me that I was off route and that it needed to recalculate. This never happened in the city or on major highways in my area. My solution was to just turn down the volume until I got back to major road. I can look at the map and tell that I'm clearly on the right road that I need to be on.

I'm using an Acer Aspire One. The Acer Aspire does not have a CD or DVD ROM drive. I used my home network by sharing a DVD drive of another computer and copying the files from the computer with the DVD drive to the Acer Aspire via the network connection. It took a few minutes to copy the 2.25GB of data over the network. I know some people use USB DVD drives. Where is the fun in that? The software installed without a hitch. The registration process was simple.

Conclusion: I highly recommend this device if you are looking for a feature rich software/hardware package to meet your recreational traveling needs. One caveat - If you don't have the time or desire to do some light reading and learning, I would encourage you to look into a Garmin or TomTom device. ...more info
  • Great Product
    Advantages:
I have only used two car GPS products. Considering my driving pickup, this earthermate LT-40 is right for me. My laptop was Inspiron E1405 so that the LT-40 could recaculate very quickly after I missed the turn. To be honest, the product is very powerful tool compared with other protable GPS navigators such as garmin, tomtom, etc. It tracks your position very quickly and precisely even that I just parked my truck on the plot where 5 feet away the road and it said off road. It is not difficult to learn.
    Disadvatages:
There were always errors to transform the map to handheld palm centro and I don't know why. The turn to turn voice was bad so that I updated the voice engine to make it read clearly.

    Cons:
As matter of fact, I didn't rely on any one of GPS navigator unless it was necessary. If you don't use your head but count on GPS product, you are not a wise man....more info

  • DeLorme Street Atlas 2009
Great update from Street Atlas 2008. The New LT-40 GPS unit is much, much faster to acquire a 3D fix and seems to be more accurate. Money well spent....more info
  • Earthmate GPS much improved
I've owned both of the previous versions of the Earthmate GPS and have always had problems holding a signal, particularly when using it on trains where sky exposure is less than optimal. I bought the LT-40 because it claims significantly better performance in acquiring and holding weak signals over the LT-20. While I haven't used the unit extensively yet, preliminary indications are that performance is in fact much improved. Do not consider buying the older LT-20 even if it is offered at a much lower price!

Updating my Street Atlas from 2005 to 2009 was a secondary consideration in my purchase, but it was worth the price alone....more info
  • Great GPS Software!!!
I have been a user of Microsoft Streets & Trips since 2004, and I was really in love with S&T until I decided to get GPS Receiver. I did some research in the internet like always do before buy something new and found that 8 out a 10 complained about MS S&T. I was very Skeptical in trying DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2009 because never hear about it, but after I did some research find that 9 out 10 were very pleased with the map software & GPS. So I decided to give it a try, now I have both Microsoft Streets & Trips 2007 and Delorme Street Atlas 2009 both running with LT-40 GPS, so I am entitled to my own opinion. Microsoft Streets &Trips is a good Map Software, but the worse GPS, that's it! DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2009 is a better Map Software and the best GPS for Laptop, period....more info
  • Delorme 2008 Street Atlas and LT-40 GPS receiver travel well
Bottom line: This Delorme bundle offers an economical GPS solution that runs on your personal laptop. Its navigation features (voice guidance and large laptop screen) are good for a single driver. But, its enroute Points of Interest directory for gas, lodging or restaurants requires a computer savy co-pilot.

The 2008 Street Atlas maps are relatively up to date. Delorme's maps seem to run 2 or 3 years behind new highway construction. It has a good inventory of county and township backroads, often providing shortcuts to the larger roadways. Delorme relies on user feedback to update road information. When traveling lesser used routes, the GPS coordinates and the atlas overlay map can be off by 300 feet or so, like the map needs to be stretched east or west to fit the road. You don't get lost, but you do get nuisance alerts that say you're "off route". Bottom line, we love it and we don't travel without it.

The LT-40 receiver is great. It keeps a GPS lock much better than the prior LT-20. The LT-40 holds on while driving under tree cover. It even worked when I walked from the backyard into the house during its initial checkout. It properly detected when I was walking north, south, east and west, moving from room to room. ...more info
  • Excellent product
The DeLorme Earthmate and Street Atlas software are very powerful and well done. The steeper learning curve than a dedicated GPS reward you with a more powerful and flexible system....more info
  • DeLorme's Earthmate is good, complete and complex.
I watched friends use their GPS devices and was tempted by the novelty of the devices. But, I never could justify the expense when a little forethought would assure all the directions I needed to go from one place to another would be printed out with map before hand.
When I discovered this DeLorme package could provide a complete navigation function in connection with my notebook computer at an acceptable price, I finally made the leap.
The DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2009 easilty justifies five stars but for one thing; It's overkill for most users and it's not untiutively obvious as to how to configure it to be just a simple navigator.
If you're looking for a simple navigator to get from point A to point B, this device will cost effectively, reliably do that and a whole lot more. If a simple navigator is ALL you want, the DeLorme Earthmate GPS can be a bit intimidating and you might want to reconsider the simple stand alone alternatives. ...more info
  • Navigating with Earthmate
It seems like the software could be easier to use and I found the help files did not clear up my confusion. I had thought that it was able to integrate with my address boor but have not bee able to do it. I did use it on a drive from central Texas to Denver and it saved me time over all. I did try to up grade to the Pro version and the only way to was through a new cd sent to the home address which would do no good being an a trip....more info
  • More complicated than I need
This was purchased as an upgrade to the 2005 version. Not much new except more unneeded features. We use this mainly to plan trips (and it is much better than a "Garmon" because you can actually see and revise your route) Then we take it along with a mini-notebook and use it for driving instructions. Trouble is, there are far too many "bells & whistles" that I would never use. That makes for a huge program. It is the slowest-loading software I have ever used. I would like the system much better if you could delete all the "stuff" for a smaller program and a cleaner user interface. On the other hand, if you consider the technology behind this, it is amazing....more info
  • I love Delorme Maps but the GPS is hard to use
I love Delorme Maps but the GPS is hard to use. I also own a Garmin 660 which I used last year to navigate thru western Canada and several western states. I wanted the Delorme GPS to use with my laptop to give a broader view of the area I was traveling than the small Garmin screen could give. Unfortunately it is not particularly easy to set up the Delorme GPS to accomplish this purpose, let alone setup routing instructions. The Garmin is much better suited to this purpose and to giving directions. If you don't have or can't afford a good GPS like the top rated Garmins' this is an inexpensive alternative, but it will require concerted effort to use....more info
