Wide Color Enhancer/Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72% of this standard. Samsung LCD HDTVs use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp back lights to give you 92% coverage of the NTSC standard, ensuring truer, more breathlessly vivid colors.

Samsung’s exclusive Wide Color Enhancer technology delivers more brilliant colors, even in bright areas of the picture where blues and greens are washed out on conventional screens. The system displays wider color reproduction, showing you truer colors – the fresh green of spring foliage, the intense blue of the summer sky.

Audio Features

TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including internal television speakers and headphones. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels. High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the two hidden, downward-firing side-mounted 2.2-channel dome speakers built into the TV.

SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass.

TruSurround XT audio also adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the sound stage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
Stereo broadcast reception is offered for MTS and SAP with 181-channel capacity. A sound leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3

Customer Reviews:

  • Best picture ever for a 32" samsung.

The picture quality is excellent. It has everything you would expect from a LCD HD T.V. Would recommend it to all my friends and Family.
Samsung is the number 1 t.v. in the consumer reports. It lives up to it's reputation. The price through Amazon is the way to buy it.They are fair, fast, and dependable services....more info
  • Get TV for an even better price
This TV looks great. Sleek and the colors are better than any other 32in TV I have seen. Don't pay over 800 dollars for any other 32in 1080p TV out there because this one is the best you will find and it isn't even 800. Also, go for the 1080p, you can tell the difference and won't be kicking yourself in a couple of years when there is 1080p cable....more info
  • A better value than the LN32A650. Love it!
I own both the LN32A550 and the LN32A650. One I use for TV only, and the other I use additionally as a computer monitor. I purchased the LN32A650 about 7 months ago and, now that I own the LN32A550, I wish I had purchased it back then instead. I would have not only saved some money, but I would have been happier with the product.

I prefer the matte screen on the LN32A550, as well as the black surround. The "Touch of Color" TV is nice and there isn't a thing wrong with it, but it doesn't look nearly as classy as this model does. The red surround is going to look pretty dated soon. And the glare off of the shiny LCD is a little annoying. Also, don't go for the hype about the whole InfoLink-ethernet connection on the LN32A650. It's pretty lame. The only thing that is better about the A650 is the remote. But since I have to use the cable remote anyway, that's not exactly a huge selling point.

It's true that the sound isn't fantastic on either model. It's not horrible by any means. Just don't go expecting some sort of theater-like experience. If sound is a big deal to you, the Sony Bravia XBR series is really nice and sounds much better(for a small TV). The Sony was too pricy for my needs, though. $300 difference in price is a lot of cash! And I didn't find that the Sony display was any better than this one.

Before I bought this television, I purchased the LN32A450 in an effort to save a few dollars. I ended up returning it for this model. Anyone that tells you that you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p in an LCD monitor of this size is wrong. Maybe it doesn't matter for standard def programs, but if you are going to use your television as a computer monitor, you'll want 1080p. The resolution difference is striking. You have a lot more control over the size of the display resolution, which then gives you more control over the size of the icons and the words. I'm not a gamer, so I'm not thinking in terms of games and high end video graphics. I'm more concerned about opening documents and reading email with as much clarity as possible and the 1080p capability really helps a lot with even these basic things.
I'm very happy with this television.

  • Not a good initial experience
I have owned many products from Samsung. A PDA, a cell phone, an mp3 device and now a monitor. They are good at offering a pretty fair product for a very competetive price, but the learning curve at first is always difficult. On this monitor, I was angry and exhausted before I got it set up. Once it is set up, then it works okay. But their installation sheets and manuals never come up to the level of the product itself.

For example: I struggled for a half an hour trying to attach the black stand. I read the instuctions twice with no success. I went onto the web to find help, and found that many others were having the same problem. I finally found a product review that cautioned to look carefully at their setup diagram. Sure enough, what I considered to be the face was actually the back. Lubricating with a little hand soap and pressing hard, it finally worked. But if they had simply taken the time to make the diagram look more accurate, much of this problem could have been alleviated.

Another example: While it has a very nice looking frame, the control buttons on the side are almost impossible to discern. I had to put on some magnifying glasses, and turn the monitor on it's side so that the light was just right in order to see the very lightly inscribed words on the buttons. In the future, if I want to use those buttons, I will either have to go through the above procedure or find the setup instructions and read their diagram. They are not well labeled.

Their products are frequently nice, but there is always a frustration somewhere along the way, usually with the instruction manual or setup. C'mon Samsung, you do so well until you get almost to the finish line with your product, and then you fall short....more info

  • Very, very nice.
outstanding television! very bright, very vibrant, tons of inputs. i have one teeny tiny gripe: the picture-in-picture versatility is not quite up to par with the rest of the tv's features. i hardly ever use PIP, so i didn't let it effect my overall opinion.

i turn off all the extra jazz that all these manufacturers try to modify the signal with; i just like to view the signal, pure and simple. there's no input lag for playing games, it's perfect for that. blu-rays look amazing as expected, and this tv does support 1080p24, along with several pc display resolutions, including of course, 1920x1080@60hz.

just a great buy. i'll have this tv for years and years....more info
  • Better Than A Sony.
This Samsung HDTV 550 1080p HDTV, it really appears so far 02-07-09, is far superior to all the trouble of a SONY HDTV. I've heard around about peoples' Sony HDTV "Crashing".

AMAZON was EXTREMELY HELPFUL and WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY to help me get this Samsung 550 1080p HDTV. 1st...I bought a 450 720p Samsung HDTV...and on realizing it was an older Model Samsung HDTV....they only charged me under $27.00 for SHIPPING Return for the Newer 550 1080p Samsung HDTV. Since I found the 1st Replacement to have a poor picture...AMAZON Replaced it with a very nice now Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV...for NO CHARGE. AMAZON HAD ALL HDTV'S DELIVERED PERSONALLY AND SET UP ON MY TABLE AFTER CONNECTING THE STAND...FOR NO CHARGE!!!! A-N-D Amazon had each undesirable HDTV PERSONALLY picked up and Shipped Back.

    So...AMAZON WAS VERY HELPFUL!!!!

Getting the HDTV set up with a Samsung Home Theater System and Sony Blu Ray Player has been WEEKS of HELL....
If you don't know Electronics EXTREMELY WELL...STAY AWAY FROM HOME THEATER SYSTEMS!!!!

ALSO...I've heard and know from experience that Samsung "32-Inch" HDTV's are EXTREMELY QUIRKY and TAKE LOTS OF CONSTANT ADJUSTMENTS for widescreen on the regular TV Channels....
And be sure that your...in my case...COMCAST HD TV BOX...is Set PROPERLY to have your HD Channels auto Widescreen and your TV Stations come in normally...IF YOU HAVE THIS TROUBLE...MAKE CERTAIN YOUR CABLE TV PROVIDER HAS YOUR SETTINGS THE WAY YOU WANT TO GET YOUR CHANNELS (automatically).

HDTV & HD EVERYTHING is a whole lot beyond us older folks with no families...so be careful Not to Get In Over Your Head.

STAY AWAY FROM HOME THEATER SYSTEMS IF YOU DON'T KNOW ELECTRONICS WELL!...more info
  • A GREAT VALUE
My UPDATED impression of this TV - amazing picture with some annoying features.

Originally, I did not think there was a great difference in image quality from my SONY Trinitron (which will never die) to justify the price tag. Included in all the hate mail I received over my review, were some helpful messages (thank you C. Wyatt). One noting that I should call Samsung since it should work much better then I reviewed. I called the 800 number included in the packet and received wonderful and helpful customer support - this is a BIG PLUS in my book. They went through a few steps with me over the phone before giving me a local service to call and arrange for service. This company was also nice and arranged for someone to come to my house within a few days. Sweet. The guy came as scheduled and went to work. When he opened the back, there were a whole bunch of circuit boards he looked at before determining the "brain board" (his words, not mine) needed to be replaced. All my previous setting were lost but the improved picture was well worth it. YEAH! I finally see what everyone else is raving about. The clarity is amazing.

I still have the same minor complaints: (1) the instruction manual is NOT for the remote included with the set - ARRGHH!; (2) set takes a good five seconds to access a channel and although this sounds minor, the time drags when you want to catch a moment in football or basketball and have to sit there waiting; (3) remote is very bulky (measures 10" long) and not comfortable to hold; (4) there is a light blue light on the just below the middle of the screen (on the tv stand) that lights up whenever the TV is on which can be distracting when watching a movie with the lights off; and (5) whenever we use an item connected by HDMI cables (like taking a dvd out) it automatically turns the TV on and gets it ready.

Bottom line: this set gives an amazing picture for the price and call Samsung if you have any problems with your set. As long as it is under warranty (1 year from purchase), they will be happy to help you. Just know that there are minor irritants that come along with the great quality. ...more info
  • Stuck!
Our television was delivered four weeks ago. Missing from the packaging was the power cord and remote control. The package was delivered in perfect condition and was not tampered with. We contacted Amazon and were told to call Samsung directly. We contacted Samsung customer service and executive customer service and were told that we would have the parts in 3-5 days. It is four weeks later and we still do not have them and customer service can not tell us where they are nor when they were shipped. Today we were told the parts are on backorder. Thank goodness Amazon customer service has stepped in to resolve the problem. Thank you Amazon. ...more info
  • Very happy
This TV is great. The picture is amazing. Some people complained about the sound, but is sounds great to me. If you are upgrading from an old, small TV, you will be very happy with the picture and sound of this unit. The menu is easy to navigate and contains many image adjustment options. The swivel base is nice for when you want to see the TV from a different part of the room.

Also, this unit meets 2009 Energy Star requirements and uses around .25 watts of electricity in standby mode. Just make sure you lower to backlight to a reasonable level, as all LCD TVs have their backlights cranked up to standout at the store.

I am usually a very critical reviewer, but I have no complaints about this TV....more info
  • Superb picture in all lighting conditions. Sound is good.
We have this setup in our bedroom. We watch movies on our home theater system which uses the Panasonic AE3000U projector for reference. (it's mind blowing)

For bedroom use it's mainly HDTV programming from cable feeding our HD Tivo. So that is the image I am looking at most the time. I also popped in a Bluray or two as a maximum image test.

    WOW.

The image, as many have said, looks 3D in a way. Very clear, deep blacks, and intense color. I am also blown away at all the adjustment options there are. I mean you can tweak this TV to work in a lightless cave or on a sunny beach!

The cable feeds had me drooling then I popped in "Sunshine", the newer space horror flick. This movie is full of dark contrast heavy scenes that murder most the mid tone black levels. Not with this set! All of the details in the hallways and in the space scenes were clearly visible. No more murky dark areas. Deep black "space", bright stars, and visible mid tones galore. HEAVEN.

I would say for anyone sitting 6 feet to 8 feet back from this TV, you're done, buy it. Further than that you need to find something larger.

Why didn't I give it 5 stars? It actually has a very cool and welcome DLNA feature built in. You can play mp3s, jpgs, and clips from content on a thumb drive. It even has a decent menu and GUI for it. However they did not provide a network connection to more fully take advantage of this. Connecting it to your network is really what DLNA is all about. And it's further odd the lack of a network connection when they say to check Samsung now and then for firmware updates! (like most bluray players do with their built in net connections)

So only a little gripe. And really, with my HD Tivo, I get all the DLNA stuff on my network anyway.

I bought this TV based on price and reputation and haven't been disappointed. I already have a 27 inch 720p HDTV and the difference is stunning. The picture is awesome! • images a little squatty
I purchased this tv about a month ago for my bedroom. I need to get a special cable box for hd from my cable company and don't have one yet. To me, the color and contrast are fine, but I know with the box it will be much better. I'm not very techy, but the installer told me if I got special (HDMI?) cables, that would help also. I don't have the full HD setup for the true experience. That said, I find the images, especially peoples' heads and bodies, squatty. I know that sounds weird, but at first it really annoyed me. I'm getting used to it, but it still bothers me. I guess it's because of the overall shape of the tv...a longer retangular shape than the older tvs. I pointed it out to the installer, and he said that it wouldn't improve, that was the picture. Like others have pointed out, the sound is a little tinny and lacks fullness. I may set up some speakers at some point, but it can wait....doesn't bother me as much as the squatty images. Before I bought it, I did a lot of reading of ratings and opinions, and did a little research. Basically, I'm pretty satisfied. When I get the new cable box hooked up, with maybe those special cables, it should be improved. ...more info
  • Great TV
This is a perfect size for a smallish or narrow room - a nice, big picture that is not "in your face". Crystal clear picture and beautiful colors. The sound isnt tops, but we hooked it up to our speaker system - an easy fix. Overall, we are very happy with this TV....more info
  • Good for HD television just not necessary
Don't get me wrong, If you play Next-Gen game consoles this Television is perfect to suit those needs. If you play Blu-ray discs instead of dvds this television is optimal for this also since it displays in 1080P. If you just want to watch television in high definition you may want to consider going with 720P instead since high definition television is not displayed in 1080P. If you own a tv that displays 1080P it will be down scaled to 1080I. However, if you own a 720P Display than the high definition will not be down scaled....more info
  • 32" 1080p TV worth the extra?
720 or 1080 for a 32" LCD? Is it worth paying the extra $200 or so for "full HD"? Well after careful review of many TVs before choosing this one I came to the conclusion that it really depends on what you are going to use as a source. And yes you CAN see the difference between the two in only a 32" screen. Some PS3 games are only 720, and others are true 1080p, after looking at both sources seperately the difference is clear. Also take a close look in the background of blu ray movies, and look at the detail of things far far away from the camera. Where in the same movie on DVD those things are blurry, or not so visible.

I already owned a PS3, so the choice was easy. In order to see the true beauty and detail of certain games, and blu ray movies I owned, I needed to get a TV capable of 1080p. I figured why would I even have bought blu ray movies if I was just going to view them on a 720 screen? Waste of money... You might as well watch your old DVDs on a up converter. I also have cox digital cable, which is not close to 1080p. So when I watch basic cable, I am restricted to a 1080i image, which is inferior to the blu ray and PS3 images.

This TV delivers an amazing picture, and requires little configuration to the settings, to see it. Also i doesn't take too much time to turn on, or change inputs like some other LCDs do. There is a setting that allows you to configure the power consumption during standby. Also it is true, the speakers aren't the greatest. But who buys a TV for the sound anyways? Just hook up your reciever and your all set.
So why would you buy a 720 TV? Cause the guy at the store told you that you couldn't see the difference on such a small screen? Or because you truly dont have an HD source? So therefore I only recommend spending a lil extra if you plan on trying to really appreciate the capabilities of this screen. ...more info
  • I'd give it five stars if the speakers worked right.
The picture is fine and I like the design, but often (and I mean just about every day) there'll be a frying noise in the audio or music will have what sounds like an odd warp in it. This didn't start until I'd had it too long to return it. I keep thinking the sound will just quit eventually. Until it does, I'll keep putting up with it. But when I look for a replacement TV, I'll tell my parents to buy anything but Samsung....more info

  • Happy with Samsung LCD
We purchased this product for our daughter. It is exactly the same as the one we purchased earlier for ourselves. She saw it at our house and asked if she could have one for her birthday. Unlike our setup, she does not have cable and has to use an antenna. She is able to get HD, and says it is "gorgous".

  • Makes a Great Computer Monitor
Bought this for use as a Computer Monitor. Great display at 1920x1080p resolution when connected HDMI/DVI. With a press of the remote, it also doubles as an HDTV when I want to catch the news, etc. Had it for about a month and no complaints. Got 2 other Samsung LCD HDTVs and they both are flawless, so far.

One thing to be aware of; if you connect it HDMI/DVI, be sure to use HDMI 2. This port is specially designed to configure itself for computer use....more info
  • the difference is nothing short of amazing
We don't have high definition service, BUT the clarity, color, sound and picture is every bit as perfect with analog cable reception as it is in the stores where they are using videos to demonstrate their high definition TVs. We can't imagine how much better it supposedly will be as it is outstanding now. ...more info
  • Samsung 550 review
It took me an hour to set up the new Samsung. Directions were the best I've seen for an appliance like this..set up was a snap.

We love the HDTV even though we're still only getting an analog signal on cable. We're way out in the country to it may be awhile before HDTV is even available, but it's fun to see television in a different format, and the picture is better. Samsung has done their homework on this television. We're impressed with it. ...more info

  • Great TV!
Today is the second day of first HD TV in my home.
    So far so great.
I purchased it through Amazon, not other Amazon merchants,
(Price and return policy are reasonable to me when amazon sells)

One delivery man unpacked the box and he set up the TV.
I tried to check whether TV was okay but He told me to operate TV after 30~60 minutes because of big temperature change from truck to my home.
I waited a few hours and turned it on.

TV sound is as good as my family enjoy the TV....more info
  • Good if everything is HD sources.
This was the top rated TV on consumer reports. But the reality is that 1080p is not necessary and can actually be worse than 720p when it comes to watching standard definition DVD's/TV in terms of picture quality. For example, compare this model and the 720 version on CNET's website and you'll see that the 1080 does not do as good a job as the 720 in fully resolving standard content. On the other hand, if your watching HD-DVD/Blu-Ray's or Hi-def sattelite/cable on this set, the picture is very good....more info
  • Samsung HDTV
Excellent picture quality at a great price! Standard definition programs looks good, but high definition and full 1080p blu-rays are outstanding. I highly recommend this television to anyone looking to upgrade their living room or bedroom TV....more info
  • Best 32 inch 1080p LCD on the market
This lcd tv is just a great product that offers so many features. Two main features that offered by Samsung and not by other brands are the picture in picture and the usb port. The picture in picture can only be used for an analog signal with another source but still a very handy feature. The usb port is great for viewing pictures, listening to music and updating the firmware. Other brands offer sd card slots I would much rathere have the usb port. This tv produces excellent picture for all kinds of sources. The sd channels look great and the hd channels look almost perfect. The speakers are quite loud but dont have any bass. Would suggest on investing on exernal speakers if possible. I also use this tv as a monitor with the hdmi port. It looks really great no complaints. Was hopping to use the vga port instead but didnt look very good so had to use the hdmi port instead. The tv is nice and bright and produces a very crisp and sharp picture. Blu rays look awesome on it and so does my xbox 360 both connected via hdmi. There are ton of settings and modes to adjust to make it just right for you taste. I do wish it came with one more hdmi port. The size is just right for a bedroom. I would suggest a 40 inch or larger for the living room. I got it at a great price of $699 so I cant complain. Definietly worth the extra money to upgrade to 1080p if your going to be using it as monitor, for gaming and for more up close viewing. Overall excellent product which is quite light and portable and doesnt use much power and very affordable. ...more info
