Customer Reviews:

  • Excellent performance
The shape and style are great, very easy to handle and storage almost anywhere, but the best is the elegant design with an excellent size, you can just put in your jacket's pocket to travel with it like a little PDA. I think the color is very elegant and easy to clean just with a little tissue, without the problem of leaving marks like the old versions.

In the matter of performance, it's ok, the little USB light show's you when the hard drive is working, and also when you can detach it from the computer in the safe mode (so that is very useful, cause sometimes after you detach de driver in the computer, the hard drive still working for a few seconds or maybe more time, so that's very annoying in the older versions of this product line).

The speed is the same, I mean its good, but the capacity I think it's not enough for these days, unfortunately this is the larger capacity (500G) in this product line, so I'm little disappointed in that fact, But besides that everything its perfect.

  • Awesome Product
I did a lot of digging around before finally deciding to get the My Passport drive. But now that i did, i am extremely happy with it. The performance is good, it looks nice (as nice as a hard drive can look), it is durable, and the price per GB was great.

The only thing that I don't like 100% about the drive is that the edges of the case are a little rough in some spots, it would be nice if the cases were a little more stylish. But I'm not trying to win any fashion awards with it, it's a storage device that i carry data around on.

So all in all, excellent product!...more info

  • What more can be said? It's a great portable hard drive
I bought this hard drive three months ago and waited before I wrote a review. After reading other reviews before my purchase, I was a bit nervous that it would stop working soon after I bought it. I had no need to worry though. It has been working perfectly. It's not just the reliability I appreciate, I have also found this hard drive really durable. I travel a lot and bring it with me. This hard drive has survived being jostled around a lot. That's more than I can for other portable hard drives I've had in the past....more info
  • A note for PowerBook G4 Owners
I have an Apple PowerBook G4 (15") and the USB port does not supply enough power to run this HD (the power light comes on but the computer doesn't recognize the drive). SOLUTION: Also purchase a Western Digital USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (Model WDCA029RNN - $9.99). Not carried on Amazon but available through the Western Digital website directly. This cable has 2 USB connectors, the second is solely for supplying additional power. Note that the cable between the two connectors IS long enough to plug into the USB ports on either side of the computer simultaneously. There may be comparable cables on Amazon, but I can vouch that this one works for this HD/computer combo and is long enough.

The drive works fine on newer Macs with the included cable.

Beyond that, it works great. I transferred about 80gigs of data in 10 minutes....more info
  • Southern Comfort
Like the size. Like the USB connection. Like the looks. Like the storage capacity. I really like how easy it is to use. I'm using to store my photos. It works just like a hard drive in my computer. ...more info
  • Disappointed
I bought this with a lot of confidence in Western Digital. My problem is that it didn't come with any instructions and I can't figure out how it works. I checked their website and couldn't find any tutorials there either. The vendor shipped in a timely manner so my problem isn't with him. I just need to know what I should do. It may be a wonderful product but if I can't get it to work, what good is it to me?...more info
  • My WD Passport portable hard drive
The Western Digital My Passport portable hard drive (320 GB) is an excellent choice for transferring and saving files. Just plug it into the USB and go. • So Handy
I bought this to backup my files. I was thinking of buying a 1TB 3.5 inch, but decided to buy this after a long thought. Much smaller and handier, haven't carried a lot though (just secured). Small size is worth. Feels a little slow but I'm not sure it's due to my USB or this HDD (the speed is similar to USB memory stick). So far I haven't seen any problem with this, considering to buy another one....more info
  • grab and go

  • Portable external hard drive
This is one of the best purchases I've made. I've gone through so many of the small USB flash drives. I would highly recommend this product. It was also one of the easiest pieces of electronics to setup. This one can turely be called "Plug and Play". ...more info

  • Stay Away!
Many people seem to have luck with this product. It was a complete bust for me!! I had only owned the product for a week. It seemed to be working quite well. So, I decided to reformat my computer's hard drive. I made sure I had everything backed up on the WD external drive.

After reformatting, I had trouble getting my data off. Then, it completely crashed. I had to pay $170 to recover data. I had to recover the data from my PC's hard drive, because the WD external drive was fried. Get something that is made to last. This product is not worthy of any amount you could pay for it. Stay Away!! ...more info
  • Defective WD hard drive. I lost everything!
I transferred some research projects and 5 years of family pictures to this drive (WD 320 passport) because my old laptop's hard drive was full. It just stopped working. IT people has just confirmed that is dead (after just a couple of months). Cost of data recovery is between 1300 and 2000.

Don't buy it! If you do it, be sure you are backing up everything....more info
  • Good Product Great Price
This was exactly what I was looking for. I needed memory, but had to remain portable. All the extras it comes with does take away from the actual memory, but still a great product with a great price....more info
  • Fast, Reliable, Works as Advertised
This is my 3rd purchase of a WD passport, and each works exactly as advertised. the backups, after the inital, are very fast. I can back up a couple of laptops and a home PC with this 320 GB. Works GREAT for loading your favorites, documents, email/calendar/contacts (PST files) back onto comptuer. I do frequent OS installs, and so this is an easy way to get back up and running afterward. Lightweight, and small form factor makes easy to carry in my laptop bag without adding any noticeable weight. Glossy black paint job is very nice-looking, but prone to fingerprints and small scratches. That said, i'd still get the black for my own personal preferences. ...more info
  • Excellent product
I have owned a number of Western Digital portable drives. This one like the rest works flawlessly and keeps on ticking. I can't say that about other brands I have tried. Highly recommend it. It is compact, works as it should and easy to carry.

  • just what the doctor ordered?

  • Good product, lousy software
The drive works great...once I reformatted it to get rid of the software and make the file system NTFS. If it keeps working for more than 2 years I'll be very happy....more info
  • Happy with my Hard Drive
This is a great product. I can backup my entire computer no matter where I am. I have a card rubber "skin" (case) for protection so I take it with me when I travel. Very easy software to setup and use. 5 stars!...more info
  • Horrible...second one dead!
We had two of these, and now they are both dead. It didn't take long...a few months, then the clicking started (sounded like aliens), and soon after both died in the same way. I think I'll bury them outside under a tree I'm planting, so hopefully they will break down within 100 years and my data can fuel some green. I'm glad I didn't trust my sole backup to them...use other external hard drives at home. Needless to say, WD will not get another dollar from me!...more info

  • Great value for this amount of portable storage
Hard to believe there could be so much storage in something only slightly larger than a deck of cards (and not even as thick) but it's true. The transfer rate could be faster but for $79 I am not going to complain too much!...more info
  • Old Reliable
I decided to purchase for my wife a gadget that she needed at least as much as I. (Not that a portable external hard drive should be considered a "gadget" for someone who teaches CS.) But my mistake was in trying to save a few bucks. First, I went with Acomdata which, despite firewire and usb adaptability, proved itself unequal to the task in the first week, thereby permitting me to return it and exchange it for an Iomega drive, which unfortunately ran flawlessly for over a month, past the point of return. (She transports her drives to and from campus on a regular basis, connecting them to a host of Macs and PC's.) Her previous Passport hadn't missed a beat in over six years but was only 80 gigs, so there was no longer any choice to be made except size and color. 500 GB and azure blue it was, and she's a happy camper once again. Except for the times the drive gets misplaced which, given the Passport's compact size (these things have shrunken considerably in the past several years), is not an uncommon occurrence....more info
  • Buyer Beware: Poorly Constructed, Far Too Fragile
I can't warn users enough about the fragility of this HD. I had to find out the hard way that these HDs are poorly constructed and if you upset them in the slightest, your data will be GONE with virtually no way to have it repaired. A couple of months ago, my foot got tangled in the cord and the HD took a light tumble on plush carpet from a height of a little over 12 inches.

That was the end of my HD and a lot of my one of a kind data that I had ported over to it. Gone. Kaput.

Certainly, there is no expectation for HDs to take serious beatings but the poor construction and lack of durability on this Western Digital model is terrible. After I lost all my data, I googled and found that there are MANY others like me who have lost their precious data with this product. Repair is not an option because even at the 'diagnostic' costs of over $1,000, there's no guarantee that they will be able to fix anything. I took mine to a specialty PC shop and tried to get it fixed but the technician (owner) told me it was toast due to the way these are built (apparently a lack of access to the drives).

    So BEWARE....more info
  • Computer Saver and a Very Durable One
Last year my hard drive crashed but part of it was definitely my fault. Before it went under it ran super slow due to all the music I had previously stored on it. I foolishly backed up my tunes on the same drive which made it run all the slower. I picked this model up recently from a big box store for about the same price that it can be bought here used. It was a great buy. I now store all of my music on it and can even take it to work with me if I feel like it. Lastly, it is very durable and I know this to be the case because it's fallen off the top of my CPU about 10 times. I've had no issues thus far and think the price is very competitive. ...more info

  • Dead in Six Months
I've never had a USB drive fail. Not only did this one fail, it did so in six months.

In my case, it was the controller that went bad. I broke the case and plugged the internal drive into a BLAC-X USB adapter and the drive itself worked fine. But so much for my portable (and pretty) drive now.

Other problems with this drive include it going to sleep and then never waking up. I would have to unplug the drive and plug it back in. It got to the point where I would have to do this 2 and 3 times, and finally today it no longer responded at all. I tried to connect it to another machine and it still failed, so it's not just my machine.

Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend this drive....more info
