  • Works but something loose inside
Works just fine even though when I move the device around there sounds like there's a loose part inside the case......more info
  • Works very well
I use this drive primarily for backing up two computers -- an XP laptop and a Vista Home Theater PC. I connect the former using USB and the latter using eSATA and both work great. It backed up 245GB in under 2 hours. Previous external hard drives took much longer. It's pre-formatted for NTFS so I didn't need to spend forever formatting the drive.

Echoing previous comments, it does run a little hot if you leave it plugged in for a long time, but that's not a problem for me, since I use it to back up the drives and then unplug it and then take it off site.

  • Simply not reliable
Alas, I have to agree with those who have found this disk to be non-reliable. It performed great - until it died after about 4 months in use. I would suggest spending a few more bucks on a "name-brand" model....more info
  • One of the fastest drives on the market IMO
When this drive is used with the included e-SATA connection it is fast, very fast. (Did not test USB port but USB 2 speed is nothing close to e-SATA speeds) Between my internal SATA disk and this external e-SATA disk I see r/w access up to 50MBps, which is amazing. It takes just a couple of seconds to move a 1GB movie file from the internal drive to the external drive. Drive so far has been reliable...more info
  • Decent External Drive
Decent drive. All external hard drives are really just boxes with connectors that let you connect a hard drive to your computer without opening the computer box. The actual drives are the same as the ones in your computer and may not even be made by the company that makes the box. This is the case with Cavalry. The cavalry does come with all of the stuff you need to hook it up and once you do it is ready to use in a few seconds without having to do anything. On the negative side, the Cavalry has what looks like a button on the front. It is really just a light lense. If you push it, it falls off into the box and cannot be fixed without opening the box, which voids the warranty. The first thing I did when I pulled it out of the box was push the "button". OOPS!! Luckily, it does not affect anything and I did not care....more info

  • Works with COX (Scientific Atlanta) HD PVR Cable
Hooked it up to my Cable box. Had to shut off the Cable box to be recognized. After formatting, usage went from 40% to 10%. Has been working with no problems for 1 month.

I placed it vertically on the stand with the fan on. Runs pretty cool....more info
  • Great Product
Solid drive, very fast, and does the job. The price is great too.

  • External Hard Drive Works Great
This drive has worked great, for extra backup for a lot of my files. It is very silent, and simple to use. I like the size of it too....more info
  • Great Product, fair price
I needed a portable tool to handle large (25gig) files and still be quick access on my laptop or desktop. With both eSata and USB, this gadget is quick on eSata and flexible when USB is the only option. And the bright blue light on the front makes a handy nightlight (g)....more info
  • Not great for MacOs leopard
I bought this for making backups to Mac, and also for video and song storage. First, the cd that is listed as coming with the drive was not there although the other parts were. (Other parts are the plug, adapter, usb cable, ESATA cable, eSATA bracket.)
The product says it will work with Windows and MacOS 9.x or up. Warning: Not without quite a bit of work. With the newest Mac OS and latest updates (10.5.6), this drive is NOT readable with Mac. I went to http://www.cavalrystorage.com for help. There was no manual with the drive, but if you dig around through Support on the website there are some instructions, so I called tech support. I figured I needed the missing cd driver and I needed to know what to do to make it run on a Mac so I had enough reason to call. Some guy answered the phone and said she (the lady who does tech support? he didn't say her name) was out but she would call me back when she got back from lunch. That never happened.
I finally found on the website the part about how to make the drive work on Mac. Here is how: Open your Macintosh HD, look in Applications, Utilities, then Disk utility. Click on 465.8 GB Generic External... (not the NEWVOLUME that is under it), click on partition, there will be a Current box showing. Change that to 1 partition. Name the device whatever you want or leave it as Untitled 1, choose Mac OS Extended (journaled), and then click apply.
When that finishes your drive will work with Mac but may not work with Windows any longer.
I told you it wasn't easy.
Anyhow, I gave this 3 of 5 because I did get it working, and it is a nice drive. But I didn't appreciate the false advertising on it being compatible for later versions of Mac. I also didn't appreciate being told someone from tech support would call back and they didn't....more info

  • Cavalry External Hard Drive
So far this has been just what I was looking for. It's the first time I installed anything on the inside of the computer (a little plug in). The only problem was that they forgot to put in the manual that you have to push in the light on the external drive to turn it on and off....more info

  • wait till its a year old. brick city
After a year, it shot craps, started making noise, kept running but computer would not recognize the drive sometimes. I finally was able to transfer data and programs to other backup drives. Now it is totally useless and big waste of time and money. Recently I had purchased another cavalry. I am not going to trust it any farther that I can throw it. Good luck, I didnt have any..... ...more info
  • Liked it so much I am ordering another for a Christmas Gift
I bought the first one to expand my MOXI DVR because HD shows were filling up the internal drive. Attached the base and plugged it in, works great. Can record multiple HD football games, no distortion. The only negative is that the blue light is pretty intense if you are going to have it in line of sight from a TV. I turned it around. I am ordering a second one today for my son for Christmas. GO PACK ...more info
  • nice drive, bad support
I purchased one of these drives, as it was rated very high. But ours was defective. Initially we started using it for eSATA, but it would keep locking up the computer over time (when doing activity on it, could be as little as 3 minutes or 30 minutes). We would plug it in using it as a USB 2.0 device and windows would often (once every day or two) de-activate the drive, so you would need to go into disk manager and re-activate it.

We managed to get a replacement drive which seems like a different style (the model number this feedback is on) and it seems to be working great. I chose this drive because of the reviews and references saying it is the fastest external drive on the market. But the process of getting it replaced was not easy. They ignore your email and take forever to respond. When I sent the drive I figured it was a crap shoot if I was going to get one back. But I ended up getting one back in a very reasonable period of time and it was a totally different style (square instead of rounded, no fan on/off switch) although it seems to be the same specs....more info

  • I gotta buy another one
I'm going to be buying another one of these at this price. I bought mine on a Black Friday Super saver deal somewhere else and paid 10 bucks more than this.
For your infomation these Calvary Drives have Western Digital Cavair drives inside, 72,000rpm SATA. Comes with all the cables you need. Hooking up the eSATA was a breeze and that was my main reason for buying this drive. eSATA blows USB away. My little 80GB internal drive was almost full (74GB), so I bought this to store all my movies & TV shows I've downloaded onto and I started dragging and dropping folders with full TV seasons on them (14 episodes +/- ). I transferred the whole batch in less than an hour and that was 30 different folders. It was literally as fast as I could dragem and come back with another they'd be done. I did do a test with the drive using the USB connection and I drag/dropped an episode of Enterprise in a little over 3 minutes, when I D/D the same file using the eSATA it took 22 seconds. I'm really impressed by the speed of this drive.
The drive is so quiet I wouldn't know it was on if not for the Blue light in the front and there is a switch on the back if you want to turn it off. It does have a fan inside too, because when I put my hand in front of it you can feel the cool air coming out the little slots above and below the Blue light. The drive stays cool as can be even when I was slamming it with folders or when I'm playing a movie from it onto my 22" monitor. I use this with my Main Rig that runs on XP Pro, but I've taken it to work and used it with my Vista machine and there's no problems at all. The drive comes preformatted in NTFS instead of FAT 32 which is sweet. (thats also why you won't see the full 500GB, I got 465GB) I do have a friend who did reformatted his to FAT32 and he's got 496.8GB. But hey I'd rather have the NTFS anyday.
Bar none this is the Best deal out there for an External drive and its kinda funny that these are cheaper than the Western Digital My Books that have the same drives inside and all the My Books I've run into tend to run kinda hot. You won't rest your hand on the top of one for long, trust me I did and I about burnt the palm of my hand....more info
  • Never gonna buy another Calvary Drive
I have had this drive for over a year and it just gave up the ghost. Performance while it was alive was o.k., but it doesn't matter when its a dead drive does it. The only good thing was it wasn't the only place those files lived....more info

  • Wont last 3 months
I bought this, and less than 3 months later, it died. What use is a hard drive if its not reliable ? I have an Iomega that I bought years ago, a 250GB external USB, and its very slow, but its never died. I'll take slow over non-functional any day. I wrote the company a week ago and haven't heard anything yet. Skip this drive and buy one from an established company with good customer service....more info

  • Very Nice External Drive!
This drive works great and is a bit slimmer than most models I have seen. The Sata capability really makes a huge difference in speed if your computer has a free external Sata port. If not, the drive comes with an adapter to turn an internal Sata port into an external with a faceplate that attaches in an empty PCI opening.

Very fast and very functional!...more info
  • Works good!
This was a simple, no-nonsense purchase. Mine worked fine out of the box and within minutes, I was backing up files from my computer through the USB connection. I'll probably put in the eSATA connection and use that, even with USB, I was able to quickly back-up what I needed.

The price is good and having done a bit of research before buying, I found quite a few positive reviews from leading electronic publications. I just wanted a hard drive to back-up my computer and this item did the trick, simply and cheaply....more info

Great hard drive but doesn't recognize with my Playstation 3. I reformatted it to FAT32 and everything but my PS3 just won't pick it up. It works perfectly with my PC and the e-sata is great but the reason I got it was for my PS3 and it doesn't work......more info
  • Buyer Beware
Cavalry stuff has big problems with quality control, hence some rating it 5 in these reviews. Buying one is a roll of the dice -- it will either work fine or be dead on arrival. After receiving my latest drive and finding it to be completely non-functional right out of the box, I won't be purchasing anything of this brand again. Don't expect customer service either, their web site has some comments about a 3rd party company doing all their support. So the company makes low grade hooch, and won't stand behind it either....more info
  • Works but missing one feature I expected
I was surprised to find that the unit does not turn off automatically when you turn off the computer. I have an external drive from another company that does this fine. Otherwise, the drive worked fine, but I returned mine....more info
