Product Description

Polar F4 Heart Rate Monitors features include continuous heart rate, OwnCal, heart rate zone with alarm and watch/stopwatch functions.

Featuring a new, slim design, the F4 is Polar's first heart rate monitor designed specifically for women. It's packed with innovative training features to help you toward your exercise goals, including:

  • Zone Pointer: A visible and audible feature on the display of your heart rate monitor showing your target heart rate zone and where your current heart rate is within that zone.

  • Polar OwnCal: Shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. You can set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure with the OwnCal feature. Because the OwnCal tracks both the energy expenditure during one exercise session and the accumulated kilocalories during a longer time (e.g. one week), it helps in achieving both short-term and long-term goals.

  • Fitness Bullets: Shows a bullet on the monitor's display for every 10 minutes spent exercising/training in your target heart rate zone. The Time in Target Zone feature calculates the amount of total exercise time spent in your personal target zone. You can use this feature together with the Total Exercise Time to determine the effectiveness of your exercise program.

Key Features:

  • Display of heart rate, exercise time, and average heart rate
  • 24-hour clock with day/week indicator and stopwatch
  • Large easy-to-read display with split screen
  • One-year average battery life
  • Water resistant to 30 meters (100 feet)

Customer Reviews:

  • Straps get yellowish, buttons cracked.
I received this watch as a Christmas present in 2005. I have been using it for the past 6 months (average 2x per week). I spotted this exact watch but with yellowish straps at an expo from Polar after I got my watch for only 2 weeks and was diligent about keeping it clean, but to no avail, it turned yellowish after about 2 months and now it just looks dirty and old, the face is still the original "ice blue". If you are thinking about this watch, buy the black one.

After I started using it, I wished I went with another model since this one doesn't store any previous data. I track all my runs and sometimes I forget to record before my next run and I lose all my previous data once I press "start". In addition, it doesn't have a stopwatch. Once you press stop, it thinks you're done with your workout instead of just a pause or break so you can't track your actual total workout time. I just let it run even when I am at stoplights or water break. If lap feature is important, go with another model. Another complaint about this watch is that there's no backlight. I have to wait till I run under a street light to see my data. The data sheet said it has a backlight but I can't manage to find it.

Today both the buttons cracked and fell off my watch. Now it's useless.

I still have the most basic model from Polar (bought in 2000 and it's discontinued) that only monitors my HR and that thing still works because there's no buttons to push. Polar makes good HR monitor and I would still buy another one from them. Just not this one....more info
  • Extremely disappointed
Polar F4 Heart Rate Monitor Watch

I purchased this monitor through Amazon in January '08 and had really looked forward to receiving it and being able to monitor my heart rate along with calorie expenditure. It was fairly easy to program especially with the on line tutorials from Polar. But, what a disappointment. After a couple of uses, I noticed that the heart rate seemed to stick in one place no matter how hard or easy I exercised. Even adjusting the chest monitor didn't help. Then sometimes the bpm would suddenly jump as much as 30 bpm or suddenly drop. I contacted Polar and was advised to return the watch and monitor at my own expense, which I did. After three weeks, I received my heart rate watch and monitor along with an invoice saying that the battery had been replaced and that there had been loose parts in the monitor that had been fixed. There was no charge as the item was still under warranty. Two days after receiving it back, it started doing the same thing. It will stick at one rate, even when I discontinue exercising altogether. And sometimes it will just 00 out with the heart beat symbol still beating. I reported this and my disappointment to Polar via email whereby after several days they replied suggesting several "fixes". These "fixes" did not help and the watch/monitor still do not work properly. There were some things that I did like about it, but what good is it, if it doesn't perform the primary function as advertised? I am out $89.95 for a useless piece of equipment. I would NOT recommend this product, nor will I purchase any other from Polar. Also, I have the black with amber face, and it is very difficult to read. There is not enough contrast between the face and the numbers....more info
  • Good basic model
This heart monitor is great for what I need it to do: monitor my heart rate and track calories burned. It comes with the watch receiver and the chest strap transmitter. The transmitter works with the machines at the gym so if I'm doing cardio there, I don't have to wear the watch (though when I did wear the watch I noticed that the number of calories burned differed slightly from what was on the elliptical).

The instructions were a little hard to understand, but luckily I'm a smart girl and figured out the programming of the watch on my own....more info
  • good for those who want constant feedback
I purchased this because I wanted to be alerted if my heart rate was too high and I needed a new watch.

I can get over my target zone very easily, and that's dangerous.

This watch beeps if you are not within your target zone. It beeps while you are getting there, and if you are too high.

If you don't like wearing a chest strap, this isn't the watch for you.

I don't mind wearing one, and after awhile, I really don't notice it's there.

Mine reads accurately when the chest strap is dry or wet.

You don't have to get it wet first, because it'll eventually do that when you start sweating.

I wear it without the chest strap to work since it's not bulky like some of the other heart rate monitors. Of course, it's not going to give my heart rate, but, it does tell me the time. :)

When I get home and hop on my gazelle, I put the chest strap on.

It tells you all sorts of things, how long you've worked out, the amount of calories burned, average heart rate for that session, highest heart rate for that session, etc.

It took me about 5 minutes to put in all my information. You can change that later, ie, when you lose more weight.

I think this is a great watch if you want something moderately simple and somewhat informative.

  • POLAR
THIS IS A GREAT WATCH WORKS GOOD IN THE GYM YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HOLD THE BARS TO GET YOUR HEART RATE THE CHEST STRAP WORKS WITH THE MACHINES IN THE GYM...more info
  • Disappointed over the durability of this watch
The watch has worked, if only for a brief time, and is a wonderful tool for monitoring heartrate and calories. However, after less than a year, it only works 50% of the time and both button tops on the sides have come off, thereby making it difficult to use the watch for anything other than time. I'm currently looking for a similar watch, different brand, that has the Polar's same features. ...more info
  • Good for "new" fitness junkie
Used this model to replace one stolen at my gym. Was perfect and works with all polar machines in my gym and with the band from other model. The storage isn't as large as previous monitor - but it works great for me!...more info
  • Love This!
Works great, easy to set up, and transmits your heart rate to gym equipment. I love the calories burned feature of the monitor, it validated something I've long suspected - the elliptical machines at my gym overestimate calories burned by approximately 30% and the treadmills underestimate by almost 40%... I WAS actually running very hard!

I'm sorry I didn't get this months ago...

  • Great heart monitor watch
This watch is very easy to set up and I have used it quite few times The strap is so stretchy that it gets loose real easy. I still like it forthe price. ...more info
  • Polar Heart Monitor
I used my Polar F4 consistently for 2-3 weeks before I ever had any trouble with it. Now I can't get it to pick up a heart rate, and if it does, it isn't even close to correct. I have tried all of the trouble shooting techniques, and nothing has worked. I will be sending this back to my great disappointment. I will probably buy a different one, but I wouldn't recommend this one to anyone....more info
  • polar F4 heart rate monitor
I've only had this for a month but so far so good. I haven't had a problem at all.I was looking for a basic monitor that counts calories, time, and HR, this one has been great....more info
  • Get gaget
I love this heart rate monitor. It give me the total calories burn the time that I was in my zone (70 to 90% of my maximum heart rate), total time and totals to date. Great Product!!!...more info

  • New spin on exercising
This is my first hr monitor and I really like it! I am now maximizing my workouts! Little did I now that I wasn't exercising within my range. The monitor is easy to use and works with the exercise equipment at the gym. I did struggle thru the set up but once I read the directions, whipped right through. Great purchase so far!...more info
  • Great Motivational Tool
Love this hr monitor. Easy to set and allows me to get the most out of my workouts. It is also very rewarding to see the calorie burn at the end of each workout. It asks for your height, weight and gender, and calories burned are predicated upon your specific data, rendering it much more reliable than estimates from most pedometers and gym equipment. My personal trainer recommended this brand (this is what she owns as well), and although you may see flashier, more attractive monitors, they will not be as reliable or user-friendly. ...more info
  • Easy to use
I have enjoyed the Polar F4.. it took some time to understnad it at first, but it really is easy to use, very simple, I was making it more complicated than it really is.

I would buy it again for a gift or myself....more info
  • Women's fitness heart rate monitor
A lot of my work out buddies have this watch, but for a long time, I didn't want to spend the money on one. However, shortly after purchasing an inexpensive version I realized it didn't give me what I wanted and didn't last very long...So,I caved and bought the Polar heart rate monitor and I LOVE it! It is nice looking (I have the red), lightweight, and gives me the feedback that I was looking for in my personal workouts. I am not so tech savvy and I found this great watch easy to use. I highly recommend it!...more info
  • Love it
I'd been trying to use the heart rate feature on the equipment at the gym, with limited success. This monitor has been great and I've been able to do more challenging interval training. I love the color--it's not black and it's not white. If you like tracking your progess and performance over time, it has some great feature. I haven't used them yet. The only thing I miss is having a back light. It's sometimes hard to ready in spinning class....more info
  • Good product
I have been using this heart rate monitor for 1 month now and I have no complaints. My heart rate is always accurate (against the machines at the gym and taking my pulse manually) and the information on the wrist unit is easy to read....more info
  • Good but would like to transfer data
I have been using this product for several years. It is my first heart rate monitor and I like the use of seeing how much i'm pushing myself with the heart rate measurement and especially the estimated calories burned. This def gives me more motivation. The heart rate monitor will be picked up on the machines at the gym also displaying it there. Some ones that are probably are broken end up interfering and giving screwy numbers for the watch. The one thing that I thought it had when I bought it was the uplink feature. But that is only to transfer data to the watch not to get my workout data off the watch and onto my PC which would be helpful in tracking progress. Why write it down manually? Still good product....more info
  • A good partner for cardiovascular workouts
Practical and accurate.. But the transmitter come along with the watch is uncoded. May interfere during excercise which is actually not a big deal.....more info
  • love this watch!!
I had the old simple version of this and lost the chest strap. So I upgraded to this model. I love it! The chest strap is the same. This watch tells you if you are in your target heart range or not and for how long. It gives your avg heart rate and your high. Then it tracks your workouts by the date. I really like it! I use it at the gym 5 -6 times a week and am lost without it! ...more info
  • A great gift for my lovely wife.
This is a great watch and it's why I got it for my wife for our anniversary last year. She likes to go walking so the heart rate feature was also a nice added feature. It has manual and automatic heart rate zones so you can find your target heart rate and then monitor from there to see your progress. It also has a stopwatch feature so you can time your walks as she does. For the price I think it's worth it as it has so many great features. She has really enjoyed it.

  • Simple and easy
This watch is simple to use. The instructions are very easy to follow. It's fun being able to see my heart rate while I'm exercising. It works with the heart rate monitors on the equipment at my gym. I don't have to hold on to their handles. The signal is transmitted from this heart rate monitor to the treadmill, elyptical, or whatever, and shows up on the screne.
I wish the watch had a stopwatch and a light. No such luck....more info
  • Practical monitor but lack some features
I know it is not a watch however it would be great if by night it could have a light button. I wear it all the time but knowing time in the middle of the night is not that easy. Also some features like a timer, alarm and a stopwatch alone will be good to have. But overall is a great monitor. Night reading is the only con....more info
  • Decent watch, lousy instructions
My problem with this unit is that the instructions for setting the watch did not match the actual behavior of the unit. That is, displays that were supposed to appear when pressing the "ok" button did not - others appeared instead. I did manage to get everything set up after experimenting with it for about half an hour.

An email to Polar customer service didn't help. They responded by sending a PDF copy of the same wrong user's manual.

The watch itself seems solidly made, and the readings seems to be accurate. If it weren't for the setup problems and poor customer service, I'd give it four stars....more info
  • love this watch
Love this watch! It is just what I needed and not more. Easy to set up and work, monitors HR accurately, keeps the target HR limits set and it beeps when I am out of the zone and need to change my pace, has fat burning zone bullets, easy to read and not too large for my tiny wrists. I do wish it had a backup light for the rare times that I am in dim lighting, but not a big deal. It evens works with my elliptical, the display automatically displays up my heart rate continuously. Evidently they use the same electronics by Polar.
    I'm buying a second one as a gift....more info
  • Excellent Polar!
I bought this polar, is not that expensive and is really simple to use. Plus, the old version had the securer of the watch band in the same plastic as the band, now, the securer is made with aluminum what makes it looks even better!! Elegant, light, very functional in a great price. I DO RECOMMEND IT!!! ...more info
  • not durable enough
This watch worked great for about 6 months. Then the buttons on the sides fell off. A month after that, the alarm completely stopped working. The watch is easy to use and has several different functions, but for the price I didn't expect it to fall apart after 6 months....more info
  • Very dissapointed.....
I bought the Polar F4 heart rate monitor and was so excited about my purchase. I received the product very quickly and was happy about that. But when I opened the package and tried to turn on the watch...NOTHING. They sold me a HRM and the watch battery was already DEAD. How dissapointing. I was hoping to get using the monitor right away....but nope! So after searching for a battery that actually fit the watch, I had to drive an hour away just to get the right battery! I like the monitor but am so upset I had to go through all of this just to get using it. I spent $90 and shouldn't of had to have to replace the battery even before my first use!!...more info
