- So far, so good. Missing Software Disk
I've had this drive for about a month now. I was attracted to the size and it's mini-mac look, as I have a Mac tower. When I received the package, it was jumbled in a pretty big box with kraft paper just thrown around it. The product packaging was open and falling apart. I was concerned about the drive being thrown around and working properly. Also, the software and solutions disk that is supposed to come with it was missing. I called the shipper and they offered to let me return the product or accept a discount, which I did. In spite of these issues, the drive has operated fine. I've "drag & dropped" hundreds of files to it with no issues. The transfer speed is not lightening fast (using firewire), but not slow either. The drive itself is fairly compact and it sits nicely next to my G5. I don't notice that it's "loud" or that the light is too bright as others have mentioned. I spent months reading reviews and trying to decide which drive to buy. I'm happy with my decision. So far, so good. ...more info
- Iomega UltraMax 500 GB
I received a Iomega UltraMax 500 GB hard drive from Amazon. It was connected to a Apple MacBook running Time Machine.
It started running just fine. But after four hours if failed. It was tried in both FW 400 & USB modes on several computers but would not connect. Amazon was contacted and they sent a replacement at no charge, arriving in 3 days.
The replacement unit has been working now for about one month and is working excellent.
Thanks much to Amazon for there excellent assistance..
- big bang for the buck.
Reliable, quiet drive which happens to look great. I had problems with other brands involving data loss and unpredictable response. No problems with the three UltraMax 500 drives I own....more info
- Does not work
Drive does not work on a PC with any operating system. Tech support said to return it so that they could format the drive and send it back to me....more info
- It works for me
I bought this for backup of my new iMac 24" 2.4GB. It arrived promptly.I retrieved the hard drive from it's well packaged box, plugged it in, and hooked it up to the computer. It's been doing it's job ever since. Time machine takes care of everything. I like the bright lite. Just cant it away from the computer and it won't shine in your eyes (duhh!). It is practically silent. Everything I hoped for. Plenty of capacity, best price and I love the stand. ...more info
- backup for my macbook
I've been running this Iomega for over a month with no problems. I love the plug in and play with my macbook! I'd give it 5 stars except it hasn't withstood the test of time yet for me.
- Great right out of the box.
HD worked great right out of the box!! No problems at all. The sounds of the internal fan is really the only noise you can here, and that fan keeps the drive at a cool running temp. Just wish it had a firewire 800 port, but besides that, its a great drive. ...more info
- Bad power supplies
I have had terrible luck with Iomega UltraMax external drives. Right before the warranty expired my power supply failed (seems to be common because the support people didn't ask any questinos and just said that if the drive works funny it is the power supply).
Now the warranty is expired and the replacement supply has failed. And now it seems I can't get any support for it.
Don't buy the iomega.
Get the Seagate Freeagent instead. I have 3 of them and have had no troubles....more info
- Runs like a champ
I've had this external drive for a couple weeks now and it's running fine. I don't find it very loud or bothersome. I'm using it to back up my Mac using Time Machine and had no trouble setting it up -- I plugged it in, Time Machine popped up and asked if I wanted to use this drive to back up my Mac, I said yes, and it's been backing up with no problems ever since.
I use external drives a lot in my job as a broadcasting teacher. I have 11 LaCie 250gb drives which have given me few problems. I subscribe to a broadcasting teacher listserv, though, where people have complained about the 500 gb LaCie drives sparking, smoking, and dying on them. It seems to be more a problem with just the 500 gb drives from what I can tell, so perhaps this Iomega is a better choice if you're looking for a 500gb drive. I haven't had it long enough to swear by it, though....more info
- Great hard drive with reasonable price!

- Quick, easy setup and backup!
Opened it up, hooked up the firewire connection with my iMac, and viola! It recognizes the drive immediately, and sets up the Time Machine backup with one click. This is the way that Windows owners can only dream about...I know, I used to be one!...more info
- Nearly perfect for my mac.
Just like other reviews, I will say the drive is a little loud when running a backup. This doesn't matter too much, since I only turn it on once a week for only about 30 minutes at a time.
Why do these manufacturers deem it necessary to place a blinding LED in the front of the drive? Are they afraid we can't find it sitting right next to the computer? For crying out loud, the light is extremely bright. It sits behind my iMac, so I don't see the bright light in my face - issue avoided.
I took it right out of the box and it mounted immediately - perfect for a Mac. I didn't have to worry about instructions because it's so easy to set up. Plug the sucker in and turn it on. The iMac recognized the drive immediately and I put Time Machine to good use right away. I bought it last month and have only turned it on about 5 times for a total of 3 hours, so I am not completely sure how long the drive will live. Hard drives will die, especially if you leave them on 24/7.
I totally recommend this drive for Mac users. For PC users, I would recommend you first purchase a Mac...then, purchase this great drive for your backup needs. ...more info

- Remember to BackUp
well its been a month since i bought the iomega Hard Drive with firewire and so far so good, i connected it to my emac and i partitioned it without a problem, one partition for booting up and the other for backing up files, and it works fine with my 1.42ghz emac, i tested it and it took a little while to boot up but it works
ive had this ext drive for 6 months now and recently it wont mount, in one ocassion i shut down and turned it on a dozen times until finally it appeared on my emac's desktop, i ran disk utility and it found bad sectors now im trying to reformat it and zero all data, but im thinking about sending it back and getting a refund...more info
- UltraMax Perfect Fit for iMac G5
I bought this Iomega UltraMax for my iMac G5 running Leopard 10.5.5. I use it as a place for Time Machine to do backups, as an extra scratch disk for Photoshop, and a storage place for a multitude of images which I use in my work to design greeting cards. All you have to do is plug it in, turn it on, and there it is. Nothing could be simpler and it works like a charm. Highly recommend....more info
My laptop (a Macbook running 10.5.4) recognized this hard drive the second I plugged it in and automatically began backing up with Time Machine. It literally could not have been easier. The hard drive ran very quietly and didn't seem to generate too much heat. Especially considering the price, this hard drive can't be beat!...more info
- Works great for me.....
I had to have the firewire so I not only bought this Iomega UltraMax HDD but sold my new one, which did not have firewire, on this site. This product is working great and easy to use. I do recommend it. I have Time Machine and use the UltraMax Firewire for "Super-Duper" which is not only a backup but makes it a bootable backup for my Mac. So I can boot from my Mac HD or my Iomega HDD. ([...]] I am running Leopard on my Intel Duo Core Mac Mini.
