Customer Reviews:

  • McAfee VirusScan
I have been using McAfee for a long time and I have never been disappointed with its peformance. It has been very good for me and easy to use....more info
  • Worst product and Support
After 4 weeks playing with the product and trying to resolve the installation issue still can not get a live support unless you pay $2.95 per minute. When I called the customer service, they asked me to consider them once more and they gave a direct number to call. Guess What? The number linked to the same number as before and no support again. So I am returning this product. Save your money....more info
  • Will not use McAfee products in the future
I purchased this product for use on my home computers. Each of these computers already had a trial version of McAfee which came from the manufacturer. I have had numerous problems installing this product; some of them are:
    1. On the first computer I installed the out of box version without removing the trial version. This didn't work, in fact it hosed up my computer so badly I had to do a system restore. I then uninstalled the trial version and re-installed the box version.
    2. I am susposed to be able to register 3 computer with this liscense. When I registered the first computer I had to create a user account. They required a complicated password, so I couldn't use any of my standard userid/password combos. When I attempted to register my second computer I could remember the password; Since I hate spam, I used a temporary email address to register the first copy (why do they need my email anyway?); now I have no way to register additional computers.
    3. This program bogs my computer down. Since I have a slow internet connection it can take many additional minutes to boot my computer. I have tried to disable automatic updates; but this didn't help. What is this program doing over the internet anyway?
    Recommendation: GET SYMANTIC...more info
  • saved for later
found it was incompatable with my current AVG Anti-virus software. keeping it to use in my other computer which uses McAfee that will go out of date soon. like McAfee-its fast, stays in the background and catches the problem right away-It's better than Norton!...more info
  • Disliked it
The installation process is not straightforward because it doesn't allow you to pick and choose which components you want to install because it comes with multiple features besides virus scan. There is no direct UNinstall from Windows Vista. The only way to uninstall the program is to download a custom uninstall program from the McAfee website. Unlike Norton, the virus scan kicks off even when you are actively using your computer. The interface was cumbersome because of the multiple products bundled together. Although McAfee antivirus may be good, I would not recommend VirusScan Plus with SiteAdvisor for those who use their computer all the time....more info
  • Just what you want in a virus program
Virus protection is a necessary evil in today's computers. So is spyware protection and firewall. This handles all of them. They can be "evil" because you have to make sure they don't interfere your other software or slow you computer to a crawl.

If you managed to wade through the lengthy product description, you saw that it protects "Six ways".

    Protects against:
    Viruses
    Spyware
    Hackers
    Bad internet sites

and it offers a "clutter" cleaner for your computer
    as well the subscription service.

(In the past, I've paid for a registry cleaner alone for $30/year. )

With MS Vista, there seems to be less spyware, virus or firewall (security) worries, but nothing's guaranteed. This program comes with regular updates and gives you peace of mind.

It installed easily on our laptop using MS Vista. It works well. So far so good. We've been using it for weeks. It does scan everything you can think of to keep viruses out which means some slightly slower times, but alas, what else can we do? Go bare?

The best virus protection is not downloading anything suspicious, but if you have children or aren't always sure of your downloads (who is ALWAYS sure?) then you'll want a virus program with updates. And spyware slows down your computer so much--especially if you have Windows versions prior to MS Vista--so you really really want to get rid of it.

It can't protect us from losing data other ways (like hard drive crashes or lighting strikes), but it's a sound investment. No matter what you do, back up your important data to a portable HD or preferably, CD. ...more info
  • Stable On My Computer
I purchased this product after suffering persistent problems with Norton Internet Security 08 and Norton 360. I just couldn't keep the "autoprotect" and "liveupdate" features from breaking. After a couple re-installs and numerous manual fixes I gave up. The McAfee has been stable and quietly working in the background for a month now.
Is either of these providing better protection than the other? Who knows!
At this point, just not having to fuss with it all the time is good enough....more info
  • Decent but Pointless
This product, although not a bad one, really doesn't serve much of a purpose. There are plenty of FREE VirusScan programs out there that actually work better and don't slow down the computer.

AVG comes to mind as a better program for virus protection, and that takes up less room and costs absolutely nothing.

If you're a fan of McAfee, this is a fine program, but if you'd rather take a smarter, cheaper route, I would recommend you look elsewhere....more info
  • AVG anti virus is Free online, why pay money...
Folks I used Norton system works a couple of years ago, then I decided to switch to this McAfee stuff only to hate its anoying bell rings and some other things etc. Then somebody on a online chat room told me about AVG anti virus and the anti-virus is free to download and stays updated. If you think about it all you really need is the anti-virus, microsoft has you cover with a firewall and most spyware blocker tools, so all you really need is the anti-virus. Its been several months and I have had no virus, NONE, no problems NONE at all. Hands down, AVG anti virus has been the best thing that has ever happen to me, it doesnt bother you and it does the job extremly well and it updates when needed. And the best part, IT FREE... :D

  • adequate & well priced
We have used NAV, Trend Pcillin and McAfee. We came back to McAfee this year due primarily to price. McAfee seems to have poor customer service compared to the others, but the program is we hope adequate.

I was concerned that the box said there were conflicts with Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. We run both of those programs and we still do. We have not noticed conflicts, so I hope they are not reducing McAfee's effectiveness. I do not think it is wise of McAfee to have a built-in conflict with two such extremely popular anti-spyware programs.

I would tell McAfee this directly, but as I said they do not have good customer service....more info
  • You can't beat the price after rebate!!
I have been using Norton on all my machines, however am open to change. The software was easy to install and seems to move quickly on my machine.
It certainly does perform as advertised thusfar, and doesn't seem to slow my machine down. I am using it with Vista. You just can't be without antivirus protection these days, and for the money(even full price), this is a nice product. ...more info
  • slow, buggy.
I find this product to be slow and intrusive. Maybe because it tries to do so many functions at once, but my computer runs noticeably slower, especially at start up. Furthermore, my windows xp tends to crash more often. I'm not a professional software tester so I can't attest to the efficacy of the virus detection. Compare to some other products that I've used, I find this product no better than some of the free options such as AVG. ...more info
  • You can trust it!
McAfee is one of the two American companies I know of. Norton is the other. About the software, great protection at a great price. Slow start up that I can deal with to know I'm protected. ...more info

  • McAfee in one word "Outstanding"
I have used other products in the past to try something else besides McAfee, but nothing even comes close to the best protection, for the best price. This program has an easy to use interface, it doesn't use as much resources as other programs, and it's firewall, virus, and network protection with alerts, keeps me informed if the constant changes to my computer. The Site Advisor lets me know if I am on a true site or fake site used for phishing. I would highly suggest that you get this product....more info
  • No Support Here
I received my customer response message a full 45 minutes before I received a online chat representative.

I contacted McAfee because when I installed their product the McAfee Virus Scan Plus 2008 that I ordered from Amazon a couple weeks before told me that the product had expired. When I contacted McAfee their website said the wait would be 2 min.

The technician I finally was able to chat with told me that the CD does not remove the old version of McAfee. I have to wonder why? Has this never come up before? Can it be that McAfee has so few repeat customers that they would not make their product so that the old version did not interfere with the new version, or baring that they new installer first removes the old version before installing the new version?

This is the way we needed to install products in the 80s. This is not the way that mature well designed products and installer operate.

They only technical support options are online, with the exception of rather expensive pay phone support.

It is my opinion that you might want to give this product a miss and try Norton, CA, shareware or anything else if you think there is even the slightest chance you would like any kind of support

PS I would not give McAfee one star but the system make you give at least one...more info

  • It's better than Norton
After being unhappy with ZoneAlarm for a few annoying flaws, I dumped it and tried Norton's Virusscan. They have a trial demo you can download online. But Norton caused some crashes when I was surfing with Firefox. Mostly it don't like certain firefox plugins.

Then I ordered McAfee. It arrived quickly. It installed easily. And now it's working beautifully. No problems at all....more info
  • After 4 months it is already requiring renewal
I thought when I purchased the product I would have at least a year. After 4 months the updating is suspended and I am told to renew whenever the computer comes up. I have disabled the wireless because it interferes with using the PC at internet cafes and my home network is protected. Therefore I get annoying messages about that as well as the spam blocker....more info

  • McAfee Works For Me
I'm not much of a computer geek, so this review will be relatively short compared to my other reviews, I just want to say that my computer has been plagued by spyware for far to long. Almost none of the virus protectors worked. So far McAfee is not perfect, but it's accuracy in stopping viruses before they get to my computer has been much more generous then I'm used to. As a result my computer is running better, so I guess you can say I've found my new spyware program....more info
  • McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008
I just wish that I wouldn't get those annoying pop up's that continually remind me that "your computer is not fully protected". Of course my computer is protected, I bought this product! Anyway, everything works fine. Only other glitch would be when I bought this product it came with a "rebate" that I have yet to receive....hmmmm.... I've contacted McAfee and have been given a "number to call". Why advertise rebates if you end up having to jump through multiple hoops in order to receive them?...more info
  • Too confusing for the money.
Although McAfee is seems to be very popular, I have always known it to be a resource hog, just like Norton. And I have never purchased one subscription because for this reason. But since it was on Amazon Vine, I thought I should give it a shot to see just how much improvement is offered in VirusScan Plus 2008. Take into consideration that I have been happily using Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0. You will see comparisons made between those two products.

Although McAfee remains conservative when idle, it uses up to twice the amount RAM when scanning compared to Kaspersky. However, scanning time was 33% faster than Kaspersky.

I do not know anything about Virus and Spyware detection rates because I don't know how to perform them. I would say that I did not get any viruses, but I almost never get them anyway. Remember that half of the battle against security breaches is personal responsibility. However, I did pick up on some settings that made me think that out of the box protection is not good enough. Some settings that allow you better protection are not enabled by default such as having the firewall protect you during startup. Also, the Firewall is on Lower Security Level by default. Although that security level is non-intrusive, Kaspersky goes the extra mile by giving the option during installation if you want an intrusive firewall or not.

How easy is it to use and configure the program to your liking? While initially appearing organized, similar to Windows, playing with it reveals the mind-numbing complexities, especially if you want to configure it yourself.

Instead of the interface having an organized path or hierarchy of settings to configure, it seems like it is a bunch of things glued together. There is too much structure in the menu system. If you want to configure a feature, it has multiple options. Some of these have advanced settings which also have multiple options and tabs. Trying to wrap my head around all the paths and finding a logical progression is mind numbing.

The top menu of the advanced menu looks different from the basic menu, which made me think it is different but is actually similar. The advanced menu has features that I do not care about nor do I think the average Joe would, which brings another element of confusion.

If you shut off a service that you do not need, McAfee bothers you by saying you are not protected and clutters the task bar by putting an extra icon in it. I do not require E-mail and IM protection. They should reserve those annoyances for more important features of the program.

Some features of the program are not installed during the main install and have to be installed later if you want to use them. It is inconvenient that I have to install them separately and makes me question how important those features really are. In any case, it leaves me thinking my security is not complete.

It takes forever to check for updates and does not communicate much other than the fact that it has not crashed. This is similar to the progress bar during scanning which is just an animation going side to side with no indication of ever ending.

The help system is not as convenient or as helpful as Kaspersky. Kaspersky takes you to the help file of the configuration screen you are viewing unlike McAfee, which saves a lot of time. It is confusing to have the Help menu is in a different location in the advanced menu like it does. Looking at the help file of the Firewall Security Levels is no help because it has many options that do not seem very different from each other. I'll go crazy before I realize what must be extremely subtle differences between each level. The EasyNetwork feature does not have anything to do with protection according to the help menu, but when you try to remove it, the dialog box says that it is important for protection. I am confused.

Some windows cleanup tools are located in one location for your convenience. But it is missing some important features such as Hard disk checking which makes this incomplete.

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 is more headache than convenience. It is too unfriendly to configure and understand the program. For an extra $5 you could get the much better Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0, which I highly recommend for ease of use and peace of mind....more info
  • S-L-O-W -- and beware auto-renewal
McAfee 2007 increased Windows XP boot-up time from 40 seconds to over 5 minutes, and it seems to constantly interfere with applications that have no reason to access the Internet -- even when no applications that do (email, browser) are open. If there is something it doesn't like, it doesn't say -- it has never reported a problem. Is there some reason a background application can't actually run in the background?

Because of its slow performance, I wasn't planning on renewing after a year. But after 11 months to the day, McAfee sent me an email message that they had automatically renewed my subscription. I checked all material I got with the downloaded installation package and found no reference to this arrangement; they certainly didn't advertise it at the time. (Don't let them have your credit card number!) It took only about 15 minutes on the telephone with someone with an Indian accent to cancel, though, so this situation could have been worse....more info

  • Does What It's Supposed To
I've never really been impressed by Virus Scanning software, and I guess I can say that still holds true.

Three user McAfee is easy to use but it's more for moms and grandparents and aunts and the like who may not be as net savvy to understand what not to trust before coming across it on your computer.

Integrates well with Windows XP. Recommended if you want to be cautious....more info
  • Work great if you have enough machine..
There is no questions you will need some kind of virus protection if you are running Windows in your machine. McAfee software will definitely do the job. But I think any of the major ones would be sufficient.
McAfee software is installed easily on my Vista laptop. But after a reboot, I started noticing my laptop started running sluggishly. I have a HP with AMD Turion and 2GB of memory, so it is not a dog by any mean.
The thing is, it is hard to tell how well your virus protection software is working, after all its role in life is running in the background and intercepting bad stuffs that came from the internet.
My thought: Recommended, but you will need at least 2GB of memory for an average machine....more info

  • Norton's Better
McAfee Virus Scan isn't really free with purchase because the catch is that it is only free for the first 60 days. After that, you need to pay to get the service for a year of updates. What gives? If I pay for something shouldn't it be free after that? Stick with Norton you'll be happier....more info
  • Bloated garbage, just like Norton...
My Samsung NC10 netbook came with this POS, and as soon as I removed it (which was a pain, you have to use both the Windows removal tool as well as go to Google, search for and download a specialized McAfee Removal program to get all the last remnants) the whole system ran a good 30-50% faster. That mirrors my experience with all McAfee and Norton products on my other computers and different computers I've used for work: bloat, bloat, bloat! And constant nagging to pay for upgrades, install endless updates that only slow down your machine even more, etc.

I just can't understand why people would pay to be abused this way. Especially when there's plenty of excellent freeware that does the same things much better and is much less of a system hog, like Avira antivirus....more info
