- Hoyle Card Games 2008
If you enjoy playing card games, and who doesn't, this is a great product to purchase! If you are a beginner or not familiar with some of the games, Help, or the Book that comes with the CD, is very informative....more info

For $10 the software game has a lot of games. I got it for Klondike solitaire and wish it had more features but then I only paid $10!...more info
- Adults: Get out that old Tarot deck and play...
The standard Tarot card decks (78 cards) now have a gaming use, beside fortune telling.
Ok, sorry for Francophile babbling about one game, but it is my by far favorite :).
Actually there is only one dedicated English language Tarot playing software online that I know of, but this suite costs the same and has 70 games.
Hoyle has full screen (for using the whole screen in widescreen laptops and monitors), high resolution, sound support. Not exactly rare features in today's commercial boxed games, but many downloadable card games don't have these simple features.
Tarot is much easier than say contract Bridge and even easier than games like Canasta. What I like about it is that it's ancient, historical, and it puts our paper Tarot decks to good use when running across the border into Canada, after learning on the computer.
You can find Tarot decks for sale online (real cards) that are replicas from the 1400's and 1500's. Obviously these are colorful and interesting to look at, and much different from modern divination decks. No, these are completely differently themed. That is, for instance instead of a new age "Hierophant" card, we have a real Renaissance Pope.
Another thing you can do after virtually learning with Hoyle: play real humans online at various French or Canadian sites. Once you learn the game specific terms, you can navigate the popup boxes asking things like; 'Prise/Garde' (declare normal or double points this round).
By the way, the online French sites have a 100 or so players round the clock in free play tables of various skill levels; yes, there are a very few gambling sites if you must look around for them.
The one negative is that the Hoyle Tarot deck has only one graphic version, near as I can tell. But the numbers 1,2,3,...21 are all there on the edges, so you can identify the trump suit cards just fine, even if your real decks are pictured differently.
If your favorite game is somewhat rare, and if its also in Hoyle, this software might also be for you. It won't beat the dedicated competition in Bridge or Hold 'Em (obviously)....more info

I am enjoying the Hoyle Card Games software I received from Amazon. It is working as it should and I have found no problems with it....more info
- Hoyle Card Games Don't work on Vista Machines
These Hoyle games by Encore are supposed to play on Vista machines, but they do only about 10% of the time. It would appear that Encore took over from Sierra, which may be why the quality has gone down. If you have Vista do not chance buying these games. I've tried the Puzzle & Board, the Card, the Casino, and the Mind Quiz Games on three different Vista computers. The result was identical on all three computers, except that on two of them the games did not work at all. The games are so sporadic that I gave up and removed them.
Bottom line; don't waste your money unless you are running Windows XP. ...more info
- Great for laptop
Works great in laptop (Vista)
Cannot install in desktop (XP) even though stated for XP & Vista
Had person try to install it who works on computers in a college, so it's not just me.
Fun to play on my laptop, wish I could on desktop....more info
- 2008, complete, easy, basic, as expected
Easy to read, Games are listed. Kings corners, and the card game "500" (not Rummy 500) are NOT on this release. I did learn how to play Canasta after 39 years of not playing. Powerful, takes over my computer completely. Hours of entertainment to relax by. 50 different Solitaire.
My grandchildren love the facial creation area, where they can choose everything from the eyebrows, mouth hair, color etc. Be sure to get the CD/DVD version. Comes with the thick "how to" book. games are complete, although you can purchase different card backs and styles....more info
Tried to play cribbage on my iMac version 10.5.3. Program does not know how to calculate points. Very frustrating and very disappointing....more info
- Code doesn't work.
The license code that came with the disc didn't work. Tech support has been less than helpful....more info
- I love these games!
From the first day i installed the games onto my mac i was addicted! Beware, you will have a hard time turning the games off! Love the gin games and the blackjack. I have tried other software for card games, but this is by far the best....more info
- hoyle help
I had been playing this game forever before it wouln't work anymore. It couldn't be found anywhere except Amazon. The game wouldn't work due to the resolution of my screen. The wonderful part is that I was able to get next day tech help and was able to configure my screen to the games resolution. I am now playing the game again with no problem. I found it refreshing that I was responded to quickly and with more than a few e-mails envolved. I appreciated that.

- Just awful user experience.
They have taken a game obviously written in Windows 3.1 era and just made it not crash in Vista...(unless you try to switch from full screen to window mode that is). There are no improvements to the user experience whatsoever. You cannot use the keyboard at all. Prepare for cramps as you have to double click or click and drag every card played. This one's going on eBay asap. I only got it when I realized that the geniuses over at Microsoft removed spades from their default game selection in Vista despite offering an excellent hearts game. Go figure....more info
Anyone besides me end up with a Trojan virus alert upon installing and using this game? To top it off, I bought two so now I have to worry that I may corrupt someone else's computer.
- Don't order this game if you have an HP computer
I recently bought 2 copies of this game. My brother's copy installed and works fine on his Dell desktop running Windows Vista. My copy installed and works fine on my Toshiba laptop running Windows XP. Neither copy will install on HP Pavilion running Windows XP. It crashes the computer everytime I try to install it.
This is the only Hoyle game that has not worked on my desktop computer. It is also the only game of any kind that was designed to work with XP and hasn't worked.
- What Hoyle Games 2007 should've been...
As anyone who bought Hoyle Card Games 2007 is aware, it wasn't exactly the most... stable program in existence. It had a lot of sound problems--sound effects wouldn't play reliably on newer computers, the background music would play the first few seconds over and over, the animation lip-sync was like a really bad Japanimation.
This new version fixes all that (at least for me) and in a way I'm slightly irritated this wasn't a free upgrade for 2007 users. While the sound effects aren't absolutely crucial, playing the game in silence isn't much fun either.
The game is largely unchanged from 2007 (and from what I've read it's very similar to the 2006 version). I don't mind that; there wasn't anything really wrong with the basic design, it was just the screwed-up sound effects which made it a pain. It has the same face creator, same characters, same voices, same comments (though the comments do seem to be a bit more relevant and focused).
Most of the characters are so annoying that I end up playing with the bear, T-Rex and "Chloe" the workout trainer. They're harmless when the player comments are turned off, and the bear makes me laugh when he tumbles over about six times in a row (he really needs to lay off the fermented honey).
New games include respectable video poker, video blackjack and video "Texas Hold'em" emulations, and a separate program called "Miami Solitaire" with a ton of solitare variations--and, believe it or not, a story mode. I don't play much solitaire so I haven't looked at it very closely, but it might be interesting.
I mostly bought Hoyle 2008 because it has a decent Canasta game. There are standalone Canasta programs available from other companies, but they aren't nearly as much fun to play (all of the ones I've tried have annoying sound effects, poor graphics, odd game variations, etc.) Many of the other Hoyle 2008 games are pretty good, and there are only a few I'd rate as "this is really bad". Some standalone card/solitaire games cost as much as Hoyle; if you are interested in only a few of the games it offers I'd say it's worth the money.
Be aware that Hoyle 2008 comes on DVD, and uses SecuROM 7.x copy protection in a fruitless attempt to make you keep the disc in the drive when you play it....more info
- Great collection of card games
It's an easy program to navigate. I bought it for Canasta. And I look forward to exploring the broad variety of other card games in Hoyle's collection....more info
- Play it!
Hoyle Card Games 2008
One of the first games I learned to play as a kid was Solitaire. I am a senior citizen now and found a way to play Spades when I am alone.
This software has always been first rate and I spend a lot of time on my computers and find that taking a break to play a card game a valuable way to relax and sometimes solve a computer problem that is bugging me by doing so.
This software is worth the cost ...more info
