Product Description

Family camping trips can be a little cramped, as even the smallest tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks take up a ton of space in the car--and that doesn't account for the coolers, camping chairs, canopies, and family dog. Enter the Yakima SkyBox 12 rooftop cargo box, which stores a bunch of your gear in a single, out-of-the-way location. Designed to fit crossbar spreads as short as 24 inches, the SkyBox 12 includes quick-installation mounting hardware that accommodates round, square, and most factory crossbars. More importantly, the SkyBox 12 offers 12 cubic feet of storage space, so you don't have to cram everything in the trunk or back seat.

Thanks to the drag-minimizing aerodynamic shape, the cargo box won't dramatically boost your gas consumption on long road trips. Other details include a dual opening system that unlatches on both sides for maximum convenience; an integrated track system for such accessories as a cargo net or base pad; a new lid shape that's easier to grip; an improved security latch that keeps your stuff safe; and a matte anti-scratch finish. Also equipped with SKS locks, the SkyBox 12 measures 92 by 15 by 24 inches (W x H x D).

  • Rooftop cargo box with 12 cubic feet of total storage space

  • Aerodynamic shape minimizes drag; opens on both sides for easy access
  • Improved security latch protects your gear; matte anti-scratch finish

Customer Reviews:

  • Excellent Product
I purchased this item for my 02 CR-V. It fits the roofline well and easily attaches in a few minutes to the OEM roof bars. I bought this size over the Skybox 16 as it will easily accomodate longer skis (200 cm+. I considered a similar Thule box but price, design and size made me buy Yakima. So far I am very happy with my purchase. ...more info
  • The best Yakima box yet
I have been using Yakima rack on my cars for about twenty years; I've carried canoes, kayaks, bicycles, ladders, lumber, plywood, and I'm sure a dozen other things that have slipped my mind. Until recently I've never had one of their box systems, although they were always in the back of my mind.

Not long ago I had decided to buy one of the new aerodynamic Yakima ski rack systems, when I noticed that a new Skybox 12 was only about $100 more. For that extra $100 I'd be able to carry more skis, I'd keep them safer, and out of the weather. I'd also be able to carry my poles, wax box, and other gear. In addition I'd have a storage system I could use year round for travel and camping gear. Yakima claims the Skybox series are the stiffest, lightest, and most aerodynamic roof boxes Yakima have ever made, and the Amazon price was better than anything locally. Seemed like a good bet.

The box arrived at the local shipper's depot in only two days, although it took another two to arrange for actual delivery. It took only about ten minutes to put the Skybox on my Honda Element's Yakima roof rack, adjust it, and lock it down. I immediately took it for a test drive to see how noisy it was (it's pretty quiet) and whether it affected handling (it didn't).

Right now it's carrying three sets of cross country skis and three sets of poles, and there's room for a lot more. I won't know for sure how well it works until I've used it for a year, but so far it looks like a winner. ...more info
  • Excellent design, but small
We bought a SkyBox 12 and took it camping with our family of four. It's a tremendously good design, but it was a tight squeeze for all the soft goods (tents, sleeping bags, clothes) we tried to put in. As a result the car was a tight squeeze too. So we returned it and are now buying a SkyBox 18, which is an inch taller and a foot wider. That should be the difference we need to unburden the car space a little....more info
  • Another great Yakima product
Yakima is a brand you can trust. We recently added our 5th child and needed the extra storage. We already had a yakima roof rack, and true to form, the Skybox attached to the rack within 5 minutes. The latches themselves can be adjusted to fit the distance the roof racks. It is quiet, although we have yet to travel on interstate with strong headwind.

We can still fit our bikes on the rack as well. If you don't need the remaining roof rack for other things, I would actually recommend getting a bigger size, but this one fit our needs well. Can't go wrong with Yakima. Also, Amazon shipped free, whereas everyone else wanted to charge $60-75....more info
  • Great cargo box
After pricing and checking out cargo boxes for a few months, I decided to try Amazon's deal on Yakima SkyBox 12. The shipping was quick and easy and they called to set up a delivery time. No problems so far. It arrived at the house in a timely manner and my husband installed it quickly and it was ready for its first trial (and many since). We were able to store our skies, poles, my dog's back pack, and several items to make more room in the car (Toyota Highlander). Both of us are super pleased by the way you can open the box from both sides, the aerodynamic shape, the fact that it is really roomy, and last, but not least, easy installation. All factors considered (price, quality, name recognition, lock on both sides, easy installation, easy delivery), we would highly recommend it to anyone....more info
  • Pleased
The purcase was seamless. All went as it should. I am very pleased with the box. The top is heavier and less likely to shatter if it should come open at high speed, which is what happened to my old box. This one, if not latched has a visual reference so you can't accidentally leave it partly open, unless you are totally careless. Very simple and quick to put on and take off of your vehicle. Setup is simple to do and is quick. It's secure when locked! I'm happy. I got what I wanted - as advertised. They don't always do that anymore, you know....more info
