The Equus 3140 Innova Dignostic Code Scanner is an enhanced scan tool that is loaded with many professional features. If you are new to diagnostic scanners, this handy tool connects to your vehicle, scans various parts of your car, truck or SUV, and retrieves a list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and code definitions from your vehicle's computer. But even if you're a veteran to scanners and auto repair, you'll be impressed with the new functionality that Equus has added to the 3140. This device not only scans your vehicle, it also allows you to freeze-frame live timing and pinpoint your vehicle's problem. Instead of having to recreate a scenario over and over again, you can now playback the timing to scrutinize all the data and make a clear diagnosis. Combine this with Internet connectivity and the ability to interface with a PC, and you have a powerful, professional diagnostic scanner in the palm of your hand.
| | The Equus 3140 easily scans all OBD-II
and many OBD-I vehicles.
As government agencies establish more stringent emission laws, vehicles continue to become more sophisticated for maintenance and repairs, forcing professional mechanics, DIYers, and consumers alike to find easy-to-use tools for diagnosing their vehicles. Many tools have already been developed to access these powerful on-board vehicle computers, but the Equus tool is particularly simple to use and surprisingly affordable. It is designed to be used by almost anyone, from the weekend mechanic to the ASE master technician. The 3140 Diagnostic Code Scanner can retrieve diagnostic codes in all OBD II (1996 and newer) and some of the most popular OBD I (1982 to 1995) vehicles. The scanner features a unique, patented all-in-one LCD screen that shows 25 parameters at once without the need to scroll through time consuming menus. Separate LED indicators located below the screen provide quick OBD I/M emissions checks; so you'll know if you're ready to pass those ever-increasingly stringent laws. Equus built the 3140 to display on-screen DTC definitions and user interfaces in English, Spanish, or French, and the trilingual language selection is accessed via a simple menu command. This device can store diagnostic codes in its memory for off-car review and analysis. Additionally, you can connect the 3140 to your PC with the included cables and software to generate, print, and save detailed diagnostic reports--and even update the scanner via the Internet.
The 3140 links to all OBD II protocols including CAN (Controller Area Network). The tool captures and displays freeze frame data that will help you pinpoint and troubleshoot any problem. This device is equipped to retrieve the following OBD II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): Generic Codes (P0, P2, P3, and U0) and Manufacturer Specific Codes (P1, P3, and U1). In addition, the tool provides live data (view, record, and playback live PCM data streams), bi-directional testing, vehicle ID capture, and O2 sensor results.
The Equus 3140 can also perform diagnostic scans for the following OBD I vehicles:
- General Motors: all 1982-1993, and some 1994-1995 models
- Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury: 1983-1995 models with EEC-IV systems (KOEO, KOER, timing check, cylinder balance test, output state test, and wiggle test)
- Toyota/Lexus: 1991-1995
- Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth: 1984-1995
- Jeep: 1993-1995
Limited one-year warranty.

- Best value scan tool PERIOD!
I do some pretty in depth mechanic work, but I couldn't justify the price of the Genisys type (professional) scanners. I have used this scan tool to check and erase codes, view live data, diagnose misfires, and a bunch of other stuff. The OBD I cables being INCLUDED is a huge value over comparable scanners. Quality of the piece is great and 2 nice cases are included. The only minus is that the instruction manual is pretty vague. If you aren't well versed in auto electronics you will barely scratch the surface of what the tool is capable of. Great product!...more info

I bought this for my husband for xmas to use on all our cars. So far he has used it on my step-daughter's car and mine. It worked as advertised. I gave it four stars because we haven't had it that long yet. I will come back and update....more info

- Returning for refund: No OBD-I for me, but OBD-II did fine
I asked friends to check out this product on the 'net before I bought it, and compared it to 2 other brands w/ similar features. I heard this one did CAN and that was great, one of the "latest features" of OBD-II. I tried these cars and it worked fine: '95 ford van, '94 S-10 truck, 2000 Kia Sportage, 2008 HHR. It did not work on these OBD-I vehicles: '85 and '87 Monte Carlo SS, '91 S-10 truck. All would flash codes using a paperclip, and seemed to communicate with this Code Reader, but, ultimately, it said there were "no DTC codes" when there were in fact codes. I had hoped to see live sensor data on OBD-I cars, so I could adjust and see Throttle Position Sensor voltage, etc., but it's only function was to say it was communicating and there were no codes. Period. Refund time for me!...more info
- Great for OBD-II, mixed for OBD-I
All information I could find before purchase indicated that the unit would work with Toyota/Lexus 85-95 (OBD-I); however it turns out that certain models/years are not covered (such as the '92 Corolla). The product box does say so, as does the manual on page 100+ (PDF version is available from equus), but this information is not available easily when purchasing online.
Make sure you read the make-specific pages in the manual before purchasing if you are buying for OBD-I diagnostics.
AS others have commented, great for OBD-II, good support and excellent workmanship. I particularly like the length of the included cables, this makes it easy to have the unit in a good position, irrespective of OBD connector location....more info
