Get used to the staring when your colleagues visit your desk. This compact and elegant charcoal gray drive is as much a piece of fine art as a piece of robust hardware. But don't let the looks fool you. Beneath its cool and sleek exterior is a robust, high-capacity, single-drive solution that gives you the ability to store and backup tons of music, videos, photos and documents in a small footprint.
Featuring plug and play simplicity, and Mac and PC compatibility, the SimpleDrive Desktop features a hi-speed USB 2.0 interface for fast transfer of data at up to a 480 Mb/sec data transfer rate. Whether you want to increase the capacity of your desktop, or back up your valuable files quickly and securely, the SimpleDrive Desktop will perform for you with style. A built-in Kensington security lock lets you lock down your drive while you're away, and a built-in capacity meter keeps you abreast of your storage situation at all times.
Powerful Local and Online Backup Options
The SimpleDrive Desktop includes two backup options that will keep your mind at ease about your important data. With the included OneClick backup software, you have the option of either backing up and protecting all your files and folders, or selected ones, with a single click, or automatically. Either way, you'll have the peace of mind knowing your digital world is safe and protected.
But for the ultimate in protection, the SimpleDrive Desktop also offers the Fabrik Ultimate Backup solution that uploads your files to a secure, online server that will protect your data from real-world mishaps and offer near-real time protection without bogging down your computer. Fabrik's Ultimate Backup allows you to store up to 2 GB for free on one of its 448-bit encrypted servers, and for just a few dollars a month, you get unlimited capacity to securely store all of your important files and media collections offsite. Acting just like the drive's local backup software, you simply set Fabrik Ultimate Backup once, and it automatically and regularly backs up your content behind the scenes.
All backups, to the external drive or online service, are unobtrusive. Once your initial content has uploaded, the software performs incremental backups, so only the smallest amount of data that has been changed or modified in your files will be updated. (Although the SimpleDrive Desktop is both Mac and PC compatible, at this time the Fabrik Ultimate Backup solution is only available for Windows-based computers.)
The capacity meter shows you how much space is left at a quick glance. View larger.
To keep your content private and confidential, all files are encrypted with 128-bit SSL encryption while in transit, with an option for a private encryption key. Fabrik's offsite 448-bit Blowfish encrypted servers are housed by a Fortune 500 company, ensuring file protection, security and peace of mind. So no matter what happens to your drive--a curious toddler, a spilled drink or natural disaster--your irreplaceable photos, music, videos and files will be safe and secure both offsite and online.

- This drive caused he USB port on my computer to fail
I purchased the 500GB External Hard Drive. I plugged in the usb cable and the power cord, the computer recognized a "new hardware found". Then my usb mouse stopped working, I could not find the drive on "my computer", this hard drive fried my USB ports. I now have to purchase a USB card for my computer as the built in ones are no longer working. Taking this drive back to the store.
- The Worst hard drive ever
It is really a nightmare , I've stored about 90 gb on it and then suddenly it stopped working and I can NEVER access my files again , I plugged the power and I got the stupid blue lights but it never show on my PC. any idea where the mistake is ????...more info

- Good Performance, Great Price - Recommended
The "SimpleTech 500 GB USB 2.0 External HD" has performed well for me over the past 6 months or so, with no issues or problems at all. Overall, I am very pleased with it and can make the following observations:
* Fairly small, good looking case
* Very quite
* Fairly inexpensive
* Has power switch
* Is fairly fast
We bought this drive to replace a defective WD MyBook (not recommended).
- Simply Excellent!!!
I have had the drive now for a few months and it has performed flawlessly. I would highly recommend this drive for its simplicity of use and reliability for the price....more info
- Buy any other brand of Hard Drive
I purchased this drive at my local electronics big box. I am a working fine art photographer and needed storage for my photos. I thought that using an external USB drive would be ideal because the data would be stored and portable. We have a standing rule in my house that in the event of a fire or such, after the children and pets, the most important thing is this drive. Well, after months of trying to make it work and not give errors, I have replaced it. I am in the process at the moment of trying to retrieve files off the drive, and it looks like I am going to lose quite a few of my files. This thing was a piece of junk from the beginning and has only degraded over the approximately 6 months since purchase. I will never buy another simpletech device and would suggest others do the same....more info
- READ THIS REVIEW
My review is not much different from the other negative reviews. However, I think this product should last much longer than six months, which is exactly how long it lasted for me.
It was easy to connect, set up, and begin using. It was very fast in backing up pictures and video, which was how I primarily used it. It would back up approximately 75-100 MB per second. One day, out of the blue, I received an error message stating that the drive was inaccessible. Today, the error said that the drive had a corrupted file and could not be accessed. I called Customer Service, waded through the voice menu, waited 20 minutes for a technician, only to be told that "nothing could be done, and that ANYTHING from a power failure to not clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray could have caused the drive to stop working".
Customer Service directed me to their website, told me to fill out their online RMA form. I followed all the directions and filled out every line. I received a confirmation page stating that SimpleTech would contact me within 24 hours to resolve the issue and replace the drive. I NEVER HEARD FROM THEM AGAIN.
MORAL AND LESSON LEARNED: DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT. IF YOU DO, BE PREPARED TO LOSE YOUR DATA.
Do not trust any one device for your backup and storage. Use multiple sources and do not purchase products such as these with an increasingly poor history. I learned a valuable, time-consuming, and somewhat expensive lesson....more info
- Excellent Buy
An excellent system that goes anywhere and is pretty much ready to handle anything, this spinning drive makes data storage a breeze. Total space is actually 464 GB, formatting and what not owning the rest. I chose not to use the pre-installed software, and had no problems with it. This drive runs super quiet and is very shock resistent. I'm extremely happy with it and will definitely buy from Simpletech again....more info
- I've had two of these.
I received this as a gift. It quit working within the first week. I shipped it back to the manufacturer and they replaced it easy enough. After the second one worked awhile, naturally, I loaded it up with software, photos, music, etc... Its been about 10 months and it quit working yesterday. It making a funny noise. I am shopping for another external drive but it won't be another simple drive....more info
This is for people who say they have lost data..
I thought I lost my data once on my SimpleTech HD, but then I found a solution and got ALL of my files back & I have been using mine for 2 yrs now.
Try this: click on start menu...click on Run... ( a small window/box should open)...Type: command.... a dos window will open, you will see: c:\DOCUME~1\OWNER>..
Type: chkdsk (location of hd):/f (note: after chkdsk you will type the drive letter where your HD is located.. for example: chkdsk k:/f...K being the location of the HD). Be sure to type it like this: chkdsk k:/f .... then enter ...Then type exit to close window when done. This worked for me. I found this solution on the geek squad site. Good luck!...more info
- Be Prepared To Intercept This Embedded Trojan Horse: TR/Agent.59904.B
This was a Boxing Week discounted item. It was the cheapest 1.0 TB external hard drive in the store (I wonder why?). Since I own the 250GB SimpleTech SimpleDrive external HDD and didn't have any problems with it (even after it was accidentally dropped 4 feet onto a concrete floor), I presumed the 1.0TB would be just as smooth if not better.
Immediately upon connection and activation of the unit, my notebook's Start Avira Antivir Personal Version 8 software discovered a trojan horse (TR/Agent.59904.B) which was embedded in the unit. Not a good start. So, that trojan horse had to be deleted.
I prefer using the faster StorageSync software which came with the 250GB SimpleTech to backup files.
Aside from the Trojan Horse surprise, the unit works as designed.
- 320GB Simple Drive
It does what it needs to do. It says 320GB but you only get 300. For the price I paid for its, its a great product....more info
- Big, but very capable
First of all, you should understand that SimpleTech makes two size drives with the same name (and virtually identical appearance). They have drives based on 2.5" drives (the 120,160,250) and the 3.5" based larger hard drives. I own one of the smaller (160gb) drives and I like it and have had no problems with it. It's portable and seems rather sturdy.
This drive is large and only portable in the sense that it's not difficult to pick up and plug it in somewhere else. It's not a notebook drive that powers off the USB. I wouldn't know about the long term reliability as I've only had it a couple of months. Also, I haven't tried rolling it down the stairs or anything, so I can't comment on its toughness.
That said, I've got 2 other external USB 500MB drives and one 1TB drive. This one is by far the fastest. Why that is, I don't know. I haven't changed any setting on anything. Just plugged it in the way they came out of the box, and there they went. This drive came with NTFS. 2 of the others did not. Was that the difference? Anyway, out of the box, this worked much better and faster with XP and Vista than my Iomega 500GB or my LaCie 1TB. It worked a little faster than Seagate Free Agent 500GB, but the Seagate stands upright on a wobbly stand.
Finally, I gave it only 4 stars because of the design. Yes, it's slightly prettier than some other drives, but I don't like the tapered front end. And also, this drive won't stack terribly well. If you're like me, you don't have too much desktop space (of course the other 3 drives don't help). If I can't stack external hard drives, at least it would be nice to be able to occansionally pile a few DVD or something on top of the as emergency desk space. The top of this drive is too rounded to utilize its surface. ...more info
- Simpletech 500 GB is great
It doesn't do tricks or get me a cold soda, but it does have a neat flashing light as it stores new data. Lets face it, storing data is what's important and this 500 GB hard drive does just that. With USB 2.0 connectivity, what could be easier! To be totally honest, I bought this one as a back-up to my first one(Identical unit) because I had to send the first one for repair of a burnt out power board inside the drive. Customer service was outstanding in that when I spoke to a representative I told him I did not want to ship the actual hard drive from inside the case, so he told me to remove it and only send the case (with the burnt board inside) and the wall transformer. After testing, he replaced the bad board and shipped it back to me free of charge.
So those are my experiences with these units....more info
- Ok while it lasted
Have used it as an offsite backup drive that I keep at my office, bringing home once a week to backup to. Worked fine for that little use until it died recently. It was only 14 months old, guess you do get what you pay for. ...more info
- Worked fine for four months, then "died" overnight.
It just wouldn't start one morning. Not as a result of being bumped or any other physical trauma, as I'd taken care to position it in a safe place. Ironically, I'd used this SimpleTech drive as a "belt and suspenders" duplicate of data kept on an older Seagate external hard drive, in case the Seagate crashed. So I haven't really lost any data, just the money spent on an unreliable product. Should have paid more attention to the one-star reviews here. I wonder how many of the people writing five-star reviews have owned their SimpleTech drive only a short time. I'd have given it five stars after owning it three months, but after this experience and after belatedly reading some of the one-star reviews more carefully, I won't be buying any more SimpleTech products....more info
- Great deal !!
Buying this gave me goosebumps! 1T of storage...yippee!!! This is a great deal for external storage and compact. I use it to store all my MP3's and photo's. It is a excellent buy....more info
Don't buy yourself a headache. This drive worked for me for a couple of months. One day, however, when I plugged it in, my computer wouldn't recognize it anymore. Instead, it asked me to install the device drivers -- which a USB HD shouldn't require. I checked with SimpleTech. There are no drivers (except for Win98), because they're not needed.
Several hours of research later, I've learned that this is a VERY common problem with these drives. Try a Google search for "Simpletech not recognized," and you'll find page after page of people who've had the same problem I have. Only a tiny few seem to have ever solved the problem -- and so far, I'm not one of them.
This drive makes a moderately attractive paperweight, but I can't recommend buying it to store data....more info
- Amazon advantage . . .
Having had no problems with the 500GB version of this series of SimpleTech hard drive, when I needed a 1TB drive, I got one on sale at Amazon.
The unit I received was defective, but Amazon quickly sent a replacement that has worked perfectly. SimpleTech drives are quiet, ready to use immediately (drag and drop), and when you get a good one, very reliable. The on/off switch is a convenient feature. The drive is rated at USB 2.0, and comes with a USB cord. Some may not care for the shape, or that the drive has a large footprint, and isn't really stackable, but if you balance that against good performance, reliability, and value, it may work for you.
I recommend buying directly from Amazon whenever possible. Even if you pay a little more, I have repeatedly found it to be worth it, because if you ever have a problem, the service is usually outstanding. Returning the defective drive was simple and super convenient, as UPS picked it up the next day. ...more info
- It Works Perfectly
I purchased this Simpletec hard drive to upgrade from a 80 gig Simpletec that worked beautifully but was running out of space for my back ups. It was smaller and required no external power except usb. This one does requires a transformer and this is the only negative I can find with this drive. It works well for the month that I have used it. ...more info
- DO NOT USE THIS DRIVE if you value your data!
I got this drive to backup a laptop that had gone kaput... I put all my info on this thing, then restored the laptop. I intended to back up my important stuff from this drive to another soon.. But never got the chance. WITHIN ONE WEEK of purchasing and using this drive, I started getting a clicking noise and the drive was not recognized by the computer.
I called SimpleTech and was told that the clicking noise indicated a hard drive failure; they could replace/repair the drive, but my data was gone unless I wanted to pay someone hundreds of dollars to recover it.
This thing is completely unreliable and the customer service agent was absolutely unempathic, unhelpful, and rude.
BUY SOMETHING ELSE!! I'm going for a Seagate this time....more info
- Dependable and inexpensive.
I bought this drive mainly to collect data from employees computers that were laid off this fall. I was delighted with the ease of operation and the shear amount of data that I was able to get on this thing. I am very happy and satisfied with it's performance. Recommend highly....more info

- Break down
i ordered this hard drive to iraq were im staioned. when is first plugged it in it didn't seem to have any problems because i already have the 250GB version. when i first started to load my music and videos it seamed like it was taking forever to load. after it was done it would take a few minites to load up when i plugged it into my comp. after about 2 weeks it just stopped working at all. being in iraq i wasn't able to mail it back within the 30 day warinty time so im suck here with a broken hard drive. but at least it makes for a good paper wieght. i don't recamend any buy this. considering how many other reviews say the same thing about it breaking down....more info
I have purchased many of these for a video business and they perform very well for the price. They can be used for PC or Mac. Very easy to format. I use them to do wedding videos in iMovie.
- Very Good but had to return
It is very good but i had to return back because i purchased it by mistake thinking it was a portable hard drive. Kudos to Amazon for promptly processing a full refund.
- SimpleTech 1TB
Had doubts when I first bot it since I didn't know anything about the company or its products.
The SimpleDrive was simple to use. Just plug in the cables (i.e. power cord and USB cable) and it works! WinXP recognized the drive immediately and was able to use it quickly!
Another great thing about this drive is that it actually has a power switch! Many other competitors external drive (i.e. Western Digital) REMOVED the power switches just to save costs! What arrogance and greed!
After awhile, the drive does burn HOT! It's best to turn off the unit when not needed instead of keeping it on for long periods of time, hence the need of a power switch (i.e. on/off button) instead of just unplugging the device to shut off the hard drive from the computer!
Never will I buy another WD external hard drive especially after they removed the front power button which was there in previous models!!
The speed isn't as fast as advertised. Have 4 USB ports with my Dell and have a USB 2 4-port card and it still doesn't seem as fast as is should've been.
Would've given a higher score if not for the lower speed!!
Consolidated about 2-3 smaller capacity external drives' data onto 1 higher capacity external drive.
Liked it so much that I bought a 2d SimpleDrive since it was on sale for $199.99 (not Amazon)! Buy this when it's on sale, especially when price drops near $150 which makes it bargain!
One drive was pre-formatted to FAT32 while the other came as NTSF! Had to pre-format the FAT32 to NTSF which took less than 1 minute!!
Will buy another when it's on sale again!
- Be careful what you buy
Ref: SimpleTech 500 GB external hard drive.
I'm not a very happy camper. I bought the hardware with the CD install disk. Started to install using that disk and received a message that the disk had a Trojan Horse virus on it and my machine would not open it.
Then I emailed Simpletech. Got a link to install software from their internet site, which I did. After installing, tried to hit the back up button and was informed that I had to create a backup folder first. This I did and then did a file dump. It took over 2 hours for the file backup and compare, for about a 1.1 Gig backup. I don't know if that is long or short, but that is the time it took.
Next, I tried to access my Palm Pilot calendar software, only to find out that all my calendar data had disappeared. Emailed Simpletech again to find out why and they stated that their product did not back up or deal with any scheduling software, so their product had nothing to do with the mysterious disappearance. (Note, in fairness, I had not been able to back up my PC scheduler to my handheld device since March of 2008 because of a software glitch with the palm software.)
So then, I called PalmPilot software support. They corrected the glitch that would not allow hotsyncing of the handheld and the PC, but were unable to find the missing calendar files. I was on the phone with them for 3 hours. And they charged me a fee for the technical support.
Bottom line, if you are going to back up your files on a Simpletech device, you should back them up somewhere else first, like a network backup source if you have access to one, so if the software messes with your other programs, you are protected....more info
- an excellent hard drive at a cheap price
this product is an outstanding one, it held up all my movies, music, and pictures. it also backs my files up incase my laptop craches, in that case I have no fear cause I can just plug it to another computer and voulla, my files are still there...more info
- If you're a gambler, then this product is for you I suppose.
Given the fact that there is nearly a 50/50 split between 5-Star and 1-Star reviews of this product, I suppose the chances of any one individual being happy with this device could be modeled by the flip of a coin. Unfortunately, I chose heads and the coin turned up tails.
I have owned a 160GB SimpleTech SimpleDrive external HDD for three years now and have transported it to two continents, worked with it outside, in vehicles and everywhere in between and it has never once caused me any trouble.
Feeling the need for storage space, I assumed that the 500GBs offered by this product would be a welcomed addition. After unpacking the hard drive, I was very satisfied with the simple "plug and play" installation that these drives are renowned for. I was able to rename the drive, drag a couple of music files to it and then....it was GAME OVER.
The PC I was using sounded the ever-familiar chime when an external device is unplugged -- only I did not unplug a thing. Ever since I have been undable to get that particular PC or any of my other two computers to recognize the drive. I have used a variety of USB cables plugged into a variety of USB ports.
A call to customer support reaffirmed my notion that I should never do business with SimpleTech again. After a 24 minute wait time, a customer service representative (and I use that title quite loosely)was about as informative and helpful as the night custodian would have been. In fact, I would have much rather spoken to the latter -- I certainly would have learned more.
Sadly, when one purchases an item from amazon.com, one is not offorded the luxury of returning said item for a refund necessarily. So it seems that I have to go muddle through a virtual mountain of red tape to return said item back to this company for a replacement that, quite frankly, I feel will give me nothing but more trouble according to many of the reviews I am starting to see regarding this device.
Yes the price was right, but unfortunately the item was not.
If you really want this device ask yourself...."Do I feel lucky?"
