Customer Reviews:

  • Chaney wireless fridge freezer thermometer alarm
Very useful product. Only minor issue is that it doesnt seem to have a huge wireless range. My freezer is in my utility room which is about 6 metres away from my fridge and is in an outbuilding! We have finally settled on a spot where both temepratures can be read -on the washing machine! So far so good, alarm is loud and effective. ...more info
  • Works like a charm!
Was shipped and received 2 days before the estimated arrival date! Had a little trouble when I first set it up. I put one sensor in our kitchen freezer and one in the freezer in our garage. The sensor in the garage keeps giving an error message. All the batteries I had when I received it were a little old, so I went and bought some new ones. Since I put the new batteries in I haven't had one single issue.
It says to use lithium but i just used regular alkaline and they work just fine. The sensor has set off the alarm a few times when the door is cracked open which is EXACTLY what I wanted!
Would recommend this to anyone that doesn't wanna go through the experience of losing a entire freezer full of meat like we did before we bought this product!...more info

  • Chaney WIreless thermometer - limited range
I am very satisfied with this product, except for the fact that the range of the wireless readout is VERY limited. The only way I could get it to work reliably was to mount the readout on the outside of the freezer!

I have two freezers in the garage and had hoped to be able to have the readout in the kitchen - a distance of about 10', through 2 walls. That didn't work, so I put it in the laundry room adjacent to the wall that the freezers were on. Even that didn't work. So I had to put the readout right next to the freezers. So the temperature alarm is not as useful as being in the house. However, since we do go out to the garage often (at least once a day), it's better than not having the alarm.

The problem we had was that the freezers are plugged into a GFI circuit, and the GFI breaker would trip periodically. So we wanted the alarm to prevent melting everything in the freezers.

You do need to buy the lithium batteries though, alkaline batteries just won't work very well in a sub-zero environment!...more info
  • Great product poor execution
In general, an awesome product. Very difficult to setup. Transmitter positioning inside freezer/fridge critical. Alarm setting is almost impossible. Directions don't help, will call their tech support. Hope they help, as it is an important safeguard to a rather flakey old freezer....more info
  • Not as good as advertised
All I needed it for was the freezer alarm. It was for a freezer in my garage. The sending unit could not send the signal 25 feet through the garage wall and into my kitchen, where I could have heard the alarm go off. Many calls to the company and eventually, I threw it out. I just gave up....more info
  • Nice idea - poor range
I wanted a thermometer with an alarm for a freezer in my garage. Like many others have written (very poor range). I even tried line of sight with NO obstructions. It couldn't even do 25'.

Another issue: I pulled the batteries from the sensors to see how the display would react. I waited 10 minutes and there was no change in display. I tried 30 minutes, but it still displayed the last recorded temp. I tried 2 hours, but no change in the display. Even after 2 hours the unit displayed the last measured temperatures.

I gave up, and returned it.

Instead I purchased a 915mHz outdoor thermometer from Lacross Technology. I also purchased their TX25U-IT sensor. No alarms, but long range, reasonably accurate, and reasonably priced.

  • Distance Issue
Have only had the item for a few days - still works!! Issue is the transmit distance. Might be 100 feet if you don't put it inside the frig. Had to attach the receiver to the outside of the frig to get it to work- might get 10 feet if I open the frig door....more info
  • Keep it FRESH!
Just bought my 3rd Wireless 00985 and mailed it to my girlfriend and mother who easily had it up and running with a little support over the phone. They love to see that their freezer and fridge are at optimum degree's to keep food as it should be...fresh. I love this product and can only say "Gotta Get One"! Tried several others but no luck. Make sure to use the litium AA batteries for the transmitters you place in the freezer and fridge. Litium can withstand extreme tempetures....more info

  • It's Perfect In Every Way, Except It Doesn't Work!
After having one of our refrigerators freeze up and go out on us recently, we had water all over the floor and we lost quite a bit of food products. As we do not spend much time in the area where this refrigerator is, we had no idea it had gone out for quite some time. After purchasing a new refrigerator/freezer, we didn't want to take the chance of another disaster like this, so we searched for a thermometer and alarm system that would allow for an external display with separate internal temperature sensors for the refrigerator and freezer compartments. Every site we checked pointed to the Chaney 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer, so we eagerly ordered one. We also picked up a 4-pack of Lithium AA batteries to power the remote sensors.

Setup instructions for the Chaney 00985 thermometer are very simple and easy to follow. I had the batteries installed, and the sensors in place in less than 10 minutes. We decided to utilize the magnetic mounting of the receiver, and stuck it directly to the outside of the refrigerator door. Within a couple of minutes, the freezer sensor registered with the receiver, showing a temperature of 58F. I knew the freezer was no higher than zero degrees, but I figured it would likely take several minutes for the sensor to adjust to the drastic temperature change. Ten minutes later I checked again and the freezer was still showing 58F and the refrigerator sensor still hadn't registered with the receiver. After waiting an hour, the freezer temp showed 52F and the refrigerator finally registered but showed a temp of 67F. WOW, how crazy is that? I removed the batteries and started over. This time both sensors registered within the first 10 minutes, but after an hour they were still showing in the 50s and 60s.

Over the course of several hours we changed the location of the receiver and sensors, and I even went out and purchased a new set of batteries (at nearly $10.00 for a 4-pack of lithium AAs). Many times the sensors wouldn't register with the receiver at all, unless I had them extremely close together (I'm talking within one foot of each other). The only way I could get this product to work is if I took the remote sensors out of the refrigerator and freezer compartments and placed them right next to the receiver. I am not exaggerating at all here folks, the sensors had to be literally within inches of the receiver in order to register and provide fairly accurate temperature readings. It eventually became clear to me that this product will not work at all with the sensors in the refrigerator and freezer compartments at all. Isn't this supposed to be the whole purpose of this product, to measure the internal temperatures of a refrigerator and freezer?

I don't know if our new refrigerator/freezer came with some sort of doors that the signal could not penetrate, but obviously this product would not work for us and I feel that the wireless signal they use is extremely poor. Amazon was great about letting me return this device, but now my wife and I cannot find any other wireless device to replace it with. There are a couple of others on the market, but they receive rather poor ratings as well and we are afraid to take a chance on them. I really, REALLY wanted to like the Chaney 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer. It looks awesome and the features of this product are exactly what we have been looking for. However, this device is obviously made of extremely poor quality, and I recommend that anyone who decides to purchase this product should keep the packaging and receipt handy, as it is likely you will end up needing to return it. I would gladly pay three times as much for this product if it would work reliably. In the meantime, if anyone knows of a product like this that is proven to work well, please let me know. Thank you....more info
  • Good idea??
I bought this after I had inadvertently left the refrigerator door open for the fourth or fifth time. I thought this would be a good solution to that problem, where I would get an alarm if the refrigerator or freezer warmed up due to an open door. But this unit keeps giving me an -E- error message and I have to reset the whole unit each time and start the monitoring again. What a pain. The company says it's due to the placement of the unit and/or sensors but no matter where I put them, I get the error. ...more info
