Customer Reviews:

  • EASY TO INSTALL AND EASY TO USE VHS TO DVD CONVERTER
I found the instructions very easy to follow. All you have to do is read and follow what is said and you are up and running. I had NO problem of any kind installing and using this product....more info
  • It's not great
I was very hopeful when I received this product. I don't have a lot of VHS tapes to transfer and after reading glowing reviews thought this would be perfect. I have several segments that I needed to get to DVD to help a friend.

I began to transfer VHS tapes using the standard video cables. I have a P IV 3 GHz Dell Dimension with XP Professional, above the needed configuration.

Video was very choppy with many an escessive number of dropped frames. Upgraded PC memory to 2GB, hoping that would eliminate the choppiness. It didn't. Used my external harddrvie for the capture and that helped (perhaps internal harddrive was not spinning fast enough, although that seems odd).

During capture, program would randomly stop, requiring me to start all over again. I watched one tape segment 10 times trying to get the 15 minutes of video to transfer.

Audio is off by a second (or slightly more) so - it's VERY distracting and is not watchable.

I can't find a way to edit the files to correct the audio problem and have not been able to figure out how to cut scenes.

I have been very frustrated. I ended up using my VHS/DVR deck and buying Roxio Media Center so I can edit the DVD format from that, which was exactly what I was trying to avoid by capturing the video directly from the VCR to a format I could edit....more info
  • Very poor product!!!
Purchased this item last year and it was a terrible waste of money. Hook up was painless, however the quality of the end product was not even worth watching. I have 1g of memory, 320 gigs of hard drive, and a P4 processor with the best chipset. I have plenty of available RAM to use this product according to the system requirements. The sound was off with the scene by abouta second or two and the scenes where jittery in places. I tried disabling everything running including my anti virus and all other programs that run in the background and still had problems. I also tried the patch offered by the products web site and it did not improve any of the problems. I am going to try an internal slot card and see if it works any better. The Roxio version has not worked any better as well ,so maybe the slot card will. I use to have the Hauppauge external capture device and it worked very good. It was very expensive at the time and it finally bit the bullet so I tried a much cheaper route. As the old saying goes, "If it sounds to good to be true...."...more info
  • It works for what I got it for...
I got it mainly for the VHS to DVD transfer ability and it works just like it's supposed to in that area. I haven't used it to assemble a DVD yet....more info
  • Works as advertised
Installed the software on my HP computer running Vista Home Premium Edition. Went to the web site to update patch. Plugged one end of the converter cables to my VCR and the other to my HP computer. Pushed "record" on the software menu and "play" on the VCR and after playing the tape, the video stored on my computer. Video resolution and audio quality are great. Used nominal CPU processing on my Intel Core Duo CPU. While I could have used the 3.0 software, I opted to use Windows Movie Maker to create menus, etc. and Windows DVD Maker to burn the DVD. ...more info
  • vhs to dvd 3.0 deluxe
I bought this program after much research for copying my old vhs tape collection to dvd format and the product has done an adequate job of copying for me however, I find the instructions to be somewhat incomplete. I have had questions about setup for certain dvd copying that I feel a FAQ page, if included, in the instruction manual would help me, as well as others, with using this program. All in all it has done a very good job of making copys of my vhs collection but doesn't seem to work, though it states it is compatable with, dvd dl discs. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't have movies that go over 2 hours in length as if you get into dl discs you will be somewhat disappointed with its lack of instructions as to how to make those copys....more info
  • Did not work at all
This goofy software installed as a "trial version" only and constantly prompted me with nag screens to register after I'd already done so. After several attempts at installing, it only gave the "repair" option. Finally, after launching the "trial version" and getting a window to open, it didn't recognize the USB device and prompted me to install what it would not install.

  • Don't buy this product if your computer is AMD Athlon!!!
This software installed easily enough, but when it came to transferring the VHS to DVD, there was the most incredibly annoying continuous buzzing sound. After corresponding with HonesTech, I found this problem is not unknown to them as they have found a "handful" of customers that have computers with AMD Athlon have the exact same trouble. There is NO fix and they are willing to return my money upon receipt of the software - which is very gracious of them, since it was not bought directly from them. If you are purchasing this software to transfer cassette tapes to CDs, it will work beautifully and the sound is perfect. Hope this helps someone......more info
  • The Easiest and Greatest
I was originally planning to copy my family VHS tapes to video using a USB equipped VCR but was surprised at how expensive they were. Then I read a review of VHS to DVD 3.0 Deluxe on a tech site and decided to try it. Frankly, I was very skeptical having had very poor results with such devices in the past. When I received the product, I almost returned it immediately, but decided I should at least try it - and it worked beautifully! No problem to set up, no problem to use and the result was a great DVD, actually superior to the original tape. And as a bonus, I found I could copy the tapes directly to the hard drive or USB hard drive. A great product at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend it....more info
  • Poor vidio and audio sync
I guess you get what you pay for .......
The audio and video are so far out of sync it is annoying to watch. I believe another reviewer mentioned this also. Not a bad price for the performance, but I discontinued using it and put it in the closet. Just too frustrating....more info
  • Very Pleased!
This is the answer to my dreams! I'm sure there's more expensive, more detailed programs out there, but this suited my needs perfectly. I've transferred and burned over 50 DVD's so far since getting this product about a month ago!...more info
  • More than VHS tapes!!!
I bought this product for few of the VHS tapes I had that needed conversion before it's too late.
But I ended up using the product more for 8mm and old analog camcorder movies that I had for a decade.
It is amazing that I can save those to DVD. Before this product, I had no idea how to do it.

Well, this product(software) also works with my new digital camcorder, which is great plus!
My kids like the Sony PSP movie conversion but it's another story!...more info
  • Get the drivers and save yourself a headache!
This is an AMAZING product and you won't find a better price, throw in free shipping and you are crazy not to get this product. After searching for a great system, numerous computer site reviews and user reviews lead me to this product. Simple, easy, straight forward. Just be sure you go to the product home page and download the latest drivers so you won't get an error message like I did. I love it and within one afternoon I made a DVD of my home movies from several VHS tapes and now don't have to worry about losing these wonderful memories....more info
  • Basic Works fine
The basic conversion from any VHS tape to DVD without any editing works fine. It does take time, obviously, to play your tape to make the conversion. But there is additional time required, called "lead-out" time after your tape has played, in which you are advised to allow as much as 15 minutes. In summary, it is a time-consuming process, but it works.

Still learning how to use the "advanced" editing features....more info

  • Avoid at all costs!
I wanted to use this device to convert my vhs tapes to dvd. I was only using the basic feature of this unit and it didn't work very well at all. The software would often crash out of nowhere. There would be multiple dropped frames of video which makes watching your converted footage a nightmare. This product should not even be on the market! Avoid this at all costs! ...more info
  • OK Product
Purchased this package based on reviews on Amazon and other sites to transfer many VHS to DVD to preserve. Installation was very easy to do. Did have some driver issues, but called company for tech suppot and got the answer I needed. I use Widows Vista Home for my operating system. Found it interesting too that you can't have more than 28 characters in disc name prior to burning, or it will crash half-way through. Tech support helped me figure this issue out as well. As of this writing, I have burned 40-50 DVD's in the one month I have had the package. I would recommend this if you are looking to preserve your VHS memories. If you are looking for high defintion or hopng for great claity in viewing, this might not be the product. I like to remember that the DVD is only going to be as good as the original VHS source. So trying to take a tape recorded in the 1980's will only be as good an image as you can see playing the tape now. Happy Burning!!...more info
  • Frequent crashes
This program crashes frequently on my XP machine (which far exceeds every minimum requirement). Even worse, when it does crash, the suggested solution is to uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reboot; and sometimes even that has to be done twice. Sometimes there is sound without picture and sometimes there is picture without sound. The worst crashes involve the program completely ceasing to communicate with the capture device box. Sometimes the program simply stops and throws up an error message, usually while trying to change functions, e.g., from capture to edit. (Pausing at least 90 seconds between each mouse click sometimes helped, I discovered.) The friendly customer support people offer useless suggestions: I have unplugged every "unnecessary" USB device including scanner, camera, printer with no improvement. I have disabled every "unnecessary" program including wireless internet connection, firewall, antivirus with no improvement. The user manual completely fails to explain HOW to use the program and I wasted many days trying to guess. In short, this program was not ready to be released and inflicted on ordinary non-experts. Mine is being returned for a refund.

  • Terrific product
I am 90% satisfied with this product. I would like to see a cd added to list of options to the record/burn option (#1). I would suggest a 8x or faster cd or dvd when you are burning. Anything over 1 hr you will need a DL dvd. If you have SP3 on your Windows XP you have to go to manufactureres web site to download update which is easy to do. Be sure to change the name of your film clip when you save it or when you pull up clips to burn your list will be a random numerical list. I would suggest that manufacturer include a printed manual instead of a pdf which you have to print out for instructions. ...more info
  • Difficult to install correctly, crashes constantly
I had high hopes for this product as I have a huge mountain of VHS tapes that are quickly becoming useless. I had problems installing this product from the start. After the first try, the device would not capture any video, simply stating "unable to start recording". After unistalling and reinstalling with software patches and driver updates per honestech's website the device did begin to capture video only to crash after a few minutes of recording. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. Every time it would crash the computer (which exceeded minimum system requirements) so bad I had to perform a hard reboot to unlock the system. I got nowhere with this product and agree that perhaps it was released too soon. Very disappointing......more info
  • VHS-2-DVD 3.0 Deluxe does not live up to the hype

  • Avoid, Unless Hardware Is Perfect
A few months ago, I was searching for a product to convert my VHS tapes to DVD format, as I am moving in the coming months and wanted to "downsize" a bit. The first product I chose was this one, and I was severely disappointed for a couple of reasons:

First, any product of this nature involves a bit of an investment. One must buy DVD's and cases, as well as an audio/video cord (and probably an extra long one, if you don't have an extra VCR laying around, as it needs to be pretty near your computer).

Now, that investment wouldn't be so bad if the finished product was satisfactory, but sadly that probably will not be the case. From my own experience (with a new Gateway computer), I found that the newly-created DVD turned out to be less quality than the original tape unless taped on the highest quality mode, with which you only get one hour of dub time (or, essentially useless). Basically, the very best one can expect from this product is a reproduction of the original VHS tape.

I did, however, give this product two stars based on the fact that, with a large hard drive and top-of-the-line video capture card, it may work quite well (and thus would be much less expensive than a VCR/DVD recorder combo unit). Yet, if I have a new computer and wasn't satisfied with the results, it would take a mammoth effort (too much for the hassle) to make this product acceptable.

Thus, if you have a super-powered computer geared for playing videos, this product may be a fit for you. If not, though, I would suggest buying a combo unit (or at least waiting until they come down in price!)...more info
  • Returning it
This product sounded too good to be true and for me it was not good. Installation was easy, no problems. I connected my video camera and the USB box and copied over my first tape. That is when problems started:
    1. Sound timing is off, voices and mouths are not in sync.
    2. In edit mode the transition effects from one scene to the next do not work.
    3. When creating a DVD the program would start and then just crash. After several times I finally figured out that I had to download a patch from their website. I did that, but the program continues to crash, each time locking my DVD drive so I have to reboot the computer to remove the DVD.

Not a very good product....more info

• Easy to Use
I didn't have any problems using the product. There is some skipping of frames while converting the vhs tapes, but some of that was related to the quality of the video tape. There were also a few delays in some of my recordings between the sound and video. It was only occasional, but annoying when it did occur. Not bad for the price, though.

Overall, I've been able to accomplish what I wanted to: convert some homemade videos to dvd. I've haven't tried to convert any of our purchased movies on vhs to dvd, so I can't comment yet on that aspect of the program. I also haven't tried the audio conversion feature yet....more info
  • Awesome!
I don't know what these "bad review" people are talking about! This product works GREAT for me! I'm a teacher and many of my educational VHS tapes are getting quite old and are not offered in DVD formats. So I'm starting to convert them to DVD's! Wonderful!

I use the little gizmo and software that comes in the box to hook up my laptop (Windows Vista) to a vcr. Then I play the tape. The computer records it. While you can record directly onto a DVD if you have a DVD burner in your computer, I save it as a file on the desktop. Then I use Windows Movie Maker to edit it and then save it as a WMM file. I then open Windows DVD maker, drop the WMM file in and burn it to a DVD. You could also edit and burn (otherwise known as DVD authoring and publishing respecitively) with any other program you may have on your computer...like Nero, Pinnacle (yucK), etc.

It is SO easy! An added benefit is that Windows DVD maker auto adds chapter buttons so I can quickly find a particular spot. Sure does beat rewinding and winding the tape! The image is a little less than good DVD quality but it is certainly as good as I get with the old tape!

By the way, this software also will allow you to play any audio source (records, cassettes, etc) into the computer to burn/edit into cd's if you wish. My Vista allows my to do that a little easier so I just use the Vista stuff with my Nero to edit. I just finished playing all my lp's of my high school choir (almost 40 years old now!) into the computer so I can put them on cd's.

I had a lot of VHS tapes I didn't want to lose and was not about to pay someone $30 an hour to convert them to disc.

This is as easy as hit play on VCR and record on the Honestech software. There's also tons of editing tools and special effects if you want them.

There's also a bonus I didn't expect, Audio recorder which let you convert cassettes, LP' and any other type to mp3 and or dic.

  • It's mainly about the hardware
A good price and effective program, but experience has shown me it's about the hardware, not the software and computer. The slowness, the absorption of one's time and concentration, the storage requirements--all somehow manage to conspire to produce as many misfires as successes. And the prices have come down not only on the software but the self-sufficient VHS-DVD player-recorders that will all but do the whole job for you. You won't have professional-looking titles, precise chapter divisions, etc., but if you intend to convert more than a handful of tapes to DVD, and if your main objective is preservation, a stand-alone machine made for the purpose is the way to go. (A lowly Sylvania costing a couple of hundred has served me well for two years.)...more info
  • worthwhile VHS-to-DVD converter
I find this to be a wonderful product. I concur with observations from other positive reviewers here. I think this product is worthwhile to buy, install, and use, even given apparently dropping prices in stand-alone machines that do VHS to DVD converting. For one thing, those machines are still quite expensive (compared to this) from what I've seen so far. For another, I like the flexibility that the software gives me. Further, it doesn't take up any space.

This software is relatively cheap and arrived cheaply and quickly. It updated its own drivers for me. It has taken some fumbling to learn how to use and it still can be tricky -- moving around USB ports, for instance, seems to trip it up and I often need to reboot and start again. But it's otherwise fairly straightforward to use.

A couple things to give in mind:

The review "It's Mainly about the Hardware" has some valid points. I had to upgrade my CPU to get over 2.5 GHz. I'm not sure how it would have performed if it went slower (the software has different resolution settings for slower CPUs). But I know I would not try it without a least 2.5 GHz, and at least DDR RAM.

Online registration. You need to be connected to the Internet for the software to load and install. That means you have to have a working and functioning Internet connection. It also means it goes through registration to that particular PC. So you cannot, presumably, go and load the software on another machine. Which is only fair because the software is not that expensive.

So I'm glad I got this instead of a standalone machine and I look forward to many hours of rediscovering old home movies!...more info
  • Disappointing Results
This product is probably ok for the person who just wants to transfer VHS tapes to DVDs for use on their computer. However, I was unable to get any DVD made by this system to run satisfactorily on any DVD player I tried besides my computer's DVD drive. In addition, a complex installation and registration system made it practically impossible to reload the software in the event of a computer crash. My recommendation would be to save your money....more info
