When its time to back up and protect your digital content--photos, music, documents, and more--it doesn't get much easier than the Seagate Free Agent Desktop USB Portable Hard Drive. Simply plug it in to any power source, connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. Powerful storage device with a sleek new design.
Portable Performance and Security
Takes up less room on your desk than a stapler.
Keep all your digital content in a safe and secure location.
If you're still relying on your personal computer or back-up CDs or DVDs to store your digital content or vital personal or family documents, you're running an unnecessary risk. Your computer can only hold so many files and can crash at any time, leaving you helpless to access your content. DVDs and CDs have a place in archiving, but they get easily scratched and lost. It's too risky to store everything in your computer, and too time-consuming and cumbersome to have a drawer full of CDs or DVDs.
Computers come and go, but your content should always be nearby. With up to 1000 glorious gigabytes, the Free Agent external hard drive is the best place to gather and access all of your important photos, movies, music, games and documents. Simply plug in the power and the USB cable and you're ready to go.
The Seagate Free Agent is big enough to store a huge portion of your digital content in a safe and secure environment, but small enough to let you take that content with you wherever you go. In other words, having the Seagate Free Agent is like having your entire computer with you at all times, but in a package that's a small fraction of the space and weight of your computer.
Designed to live peacefully in your home or office, the Free Agent external hard drive is extra quiet and takes up less room on your desk than a stapler. Even the cable ports are base-mounted to help keep your desk free of clutter. We even add a little bit of sophistication to your desktop with the unique espresso brown finish and molten amber illumination.
The sleek and slim design of this hard drive--only measures 7.5 x 1.6 x 6.4-inches (H x D x W)--and a weight of less than four pounds. The Seagate Free Agent lets you transfer files seamlessly from your computer via its USB 2.0 connection at a brisk transfer rate of up to 480Mb/sec. The drive delivers a spindle speed of 7,200 RPM, giving you the high-speed performance you need to back your data up quickly and safely.
The Seagate Free Agent is ready to use out of the box with a PC, but it can be made Mac-ready in a matter of minutes with Mac OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is already compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades.
At this compact size, and with this high performance, you now have the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, so your digital content finally has room to breathe. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind.

- Remarkable poor performance for a drive by seagate
I bought this just off the brand name. I've had good experiences with Seagate before but this product is just terrible plain and simple. It will just stop working if you leave it plugged it in and I'm having numerous errors and lost data. I don't want to risk 500GB of my data on this POS so I had to go spend another 100 bucks to get a good one. Seagate sucks....more info
- Seagate External Hard Drive
I'm very pleased with this purchase. It was a very easy setup and meets my needs as a backup device for my files....more info
- Very Unstable Design
This drive has a very poor, bulky, and unstable design. The pictured base does NOT come off and you are forced to stand it precariously on end, which is a big tipping hazard. And lo and behold, if tipped, of course it encounters mechanical hard drive failure which would cost $1000 for data recovery....more info
- "Delayed Write Failures"
I have had no problems with other external hard drives. Only this one is giving me hard times with this "Delayed Write Failure" error, which may lead to the loss of valuable data. I tried every possible way suggested in the manufacturer's site but in vain. 500G is for the storage of bigger data, and once they are lost, there is often nowhere to recover. Beware. ...more info
- Does what it's suppose to
Although I can't speak on the behalf of those who maybe got defective ones, I got this drive because through my research it was the most reliable and had the fewest defects and DOA's. I've had the product for several months and hasn't done me wrong. keep in mind though that whenever you buy any harddrive external or not the actual usable space is always lower than what it says due to how space is allocated. (500gb = 465gb of usable) all and all, it's a great drive....more info
- Great product, fair price
I bought this 500 GB external hard drive to back up my data, I've had it for a few months and all I can say is that I'm very happy with it. The write speeds are very fast, 500 GB is a lot and I say a fair amount for around $100. The build seems solid enough, although I'm sure there's external hard drives out there with a more solid, compact, space-efficient build with better materials, but this one will do. Very attractive case, I really like the orange light on the side. Powered by an outlet plug, so this is not for those who are looking for externals only powered by USB. I like the software it comes with, the sync features are very useful, good brand name, great product!!!...more info
- Nice Drive
So far so good. I have several of these drives and have had no problems with any of them....more info
- faulty product, Seagate not helpful.
I cannot explain enough how horrible my experiences were with Seagate. I originally bought this product to back up all of my memories- photographs, music, and documents- since my ancient computer was pitter pattering on it's way out and has a very small hard-drive.
I had a 320 GB FreeAgent hard-drive and after about 8 months, one day it just stopped working. I googled the issue to find out it is really common for Seagate products. After calling Seagate technical support I found out that a company of theirs was my only option at getting my memories back (for a minimum of $1,000 and up to $3,000 in data recovery). Seagate declares the warranty invalid if you get data recovery through any other company or service (which would be cheaper, but still extremely expensive).
What I decided to do in an act of desperation was physically take apart the casing and remove the hard-drive since I'm computer savvy and try to power it with a Caddy-drive. Upon disassembling the Seagate product I saw that the power converter was singed and had fried my hard-drive, making it impossible to get any files back without going through an expensive service. This could have been prevented had Seagate designed better ventilation/fan system for the amount of heat this drive produces. Today, I got a quote from Best Buy- it would cost $1599 for data recovery through them.
Best Buy told me flat out that this problem was 100% due to a poorly produced product and Seagate refuses to be helpful in the least. Point being, Seagate hard-drives are poorly designed and they try to trap you into giving them money for data recovery once your drive fails. All of their drives have the same problem, where they overheat and destroy the hard-drive. The only reason most reviews have been good is because, like I did in the past, most reviewees have rated the hardware before it overheats.
- Looks lovely, but dies after 8 months
Like other reviewers, this drive died on me. I didn't notice it getting hot, but one day it just quit. Multiple utilities on Windows XP and Mac OS X Leopard couldn't get the volume on the disk to mount; repairing was out of the question, since who wants to use an unreliable disk as a back-up?
The case is cute enough. But, from the reviews, I just guess the thing doesn't work right. I have other backup drives that have lasted a lot longer...more info
- Too big
- Very large
- Bad designed, could be horizontal, could easily tip over.
- On 3 months was defective and was replaced by Segato.
- Good speed
- Great support from Seagate....more info
- Good product for small price
I needed external HDD as data storage (rare usage, I do not use it as "big flash drive").
It was best value for this price.
Only thing - it requires AC power adapter (some external drives can work on USB power), but for home use it is not a big problem....more info
- Hard Drive Back Up
This item was received in good shape, was easy to install and works well. The only problem I have with it is trying to find a way to have it back up a network drive....more info
- Not a quality product
Boy, this driv sure liiked good on paper. Good price, good reviews, well-known name, etc. I wish that I did more research.
To start off, the fact that in most cases this device can't back up photos is a known error. You usually receive a message that "hidden file" backup is not supported", even though in many cases your photos aren't "hidden files". When you remove this property, they still can't be backed up automatically. Of course, you can do a Copy/Paste, but I purchased the item so I wouldn't have to do that. The device allows you to customize a script to specify what files you want to back up, and how often, but within an hour, the system loses the customization.
All in all, a disappointing purchase. Returned it for credit in 3 days....more info
- Absolute Garbage!
I have returned no less than 4 of these under warranty. Every single replacement unit I've received has been DOA. What good does the 5-year warranty do if Seagate won't send me a replacement that works? I have given up on trying to get a replacement that actually works. I spent over $30 on postage for warranty returns. I ended up taking apart the most recent one they sent and put the hard drive in a case I bought on ebay for $12 and it worked fine. There seems to be some major power management issues with the enclosures. I will probably never buy a Seagate product again. From now on, I will stick with what has worked for me in the past (Western Digital)....more info
- I love sea gate externals!
I already have 2 older ones and this will be my 2nd of this exact hard drive. These are awesome and are a lot more reliable than other brands like lacie. I've NEVER had a problem with sea gate and use these EVERY day all day organizing portfolio for my artists.
- Do not Purchase !!!
I purchased this drive less than a year ago and it died on me today 5/12/2009 - Total data loss. I honestly thought Seagate made quality products - lesson learned. ...more info
- Works with Windows 2008 and Hyper-V
Windows 2008 recognizes this drive. You can create Hyper-V vhd's on this machine. Very handy for giving yourself more virtual disk space. Using a Dell Optiplex 755 with Firewire 400 to access the drive....more info
- Not reliable at all. Please dont waste your money.
I had this drive for 6 months and kept backing up data periodically. But the drive stopped working after 6 months and I had to format it entirely to make it work. I lost personal pics and a lot of stuff because of this drive.
My recommendation is to never purchase it and if you already have it, don't use it to backup your data. You will be greatly disappointed....more info
- Do not buy any Freeagent drives
I have always had good luck with Seagate drives but the Freeagent series uses a unique usb cable that makes it essential that you keep the cable 'glued' to the drive lest you get it mixed with your other cables. Neither the power supply nor the cable has any markings to indicate they are Seagate and therefore, while I can pull out any usb cable to connect any of my other usb drives, this is not the case with this line of Seagate drives. Why they would design a product to use a non standard cable and then make replacing that cable almost impossible is beyond me. I really can't say how well the drive functions because I have no usb cable to connect it to the computer and no way of getting one. I have checked their website only to be met with more confusion. Maybe one of your customers can clear up for me why a big company like Seagate would go out of their way to make connecting the Freeagent series of drives to the computer?...more info
I only use this hard drive for back up purposes, but it works perfect for that. It even has it's own program already loaded on it to schedule backups every day/week, etc. ...more info
- Ok on PCs, not so good on Macs
I have been attempting for some time to use this drive as a backup for my Mac. Ideally, one would like to drop large folders on it, containing, say, your photography archive. Unfortunately, the drive eventually times out and gives various errors. When this happens, I cannot umount the drive or to get DiskUtility to verify it. The drive basically can't be written to until I reboot. I have reformatted the drive for Mac HFS, twice now, yet the problem remains.
Seagate support did not respond to my email.
I am extremely disappointed with this drive....more info
- Buyer Beware
I bought this hard drive to back up all my important pictures and videos. A year later, it doesn't work. Seagate sent me a new power cord, but unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem. Data recovery is not covered under the warranty. Goodbye memories!...more info
This was a great purchase. It come with software for drive management, and was a great deal for the amount of space. I do wish it could be switchable between Mac and PC but even still great product. highly recommended....more info
- DON'T LET IT GET HOT!
WELL RIGHT OUT OF BOX,THERE WERE NO LIGHTS.SETUP VERY EASY,JUST DO NOT LEAVE PLUGGED IN FOR A LONG TIME(5 OR 6HRS.)IT STARTED DELETING FILES,LUCKILY IT SHOWS ON THE TOOLBAR,AT FIRST I THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT,BECAUSE I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THE FILE,BUT THEN I NOTICED IT WAS DELETING MY RESTORE FILES.I TOOK IT OFF THE SYSTEM AND UNPLUGGED IT.I THEN CHECKED MY RESTORE AND ALL THE CHECKPOINTS WERE GONE.I NOW JUST PLUG IT IN WHEN I AM GOING TO USE IT....more info
- Seagate Free Agent 500 GB hard drive
I Found the Free Agent 500 GB hard drive easy to install and use. With my application (backing up address books, photos, desk tops and design files) the Free Agent works quickly through the USB port and creates a storage redundancy therefore relieving the stress of "what will I do?; not if my PC hard drive fails, but when??"...more info
- So far, so good with this Seagate
I've been very happy with this harddrive. After putting off having something on which to back up files for too long, it provides a solid sense of relief to have this unit. The performance has been about what I would expect. There are not unduly long waiting times to back up a few GB of files and the hardware works properly when interfacing with Windows XP without having to worry about drivers. I was very pleasantly surprised when the unit completely survived a 2.5 foot fall onto hard wood floors (thanks to my cord-tripping golden retriever).
I haven't yet found anything to dislike with this product in the 2 months I've owned it....more info
- a data (LIFE) saver!!

- Avoid This Product
Please avoid this product. This past week, I dropped the drive about two feet ONTO A CARPET FLOOR as I was rearranging wires. Now it gives off a periodic beep and a constant hard-drive type hum, is not recognizeable by the PC at all, and is essentially dead. The problem is that I recently downloaded many, many GBs of irreplaceable data onto this drive. I suppose the mistake was mine to think I could count on such a simple product to be that reliable, but I guess the point is if you are planning to use this device to store data you can live without, by all means, go ahead. However, if like me, you would be virtually devestated at the loss of the data you might store on this, please avoid at all cost. I have no bone to pick with Seagate/Maxtor- I am just basically numb right now to think one tiny drop onto carpet would erase months of work in the blink of an eye. It's gone....more info
- Perfect 500GB USB Hard Drive
Im using it about 9 months now, is always reliable.
It is plugged in all-day and all-night.
I Transfer files between PC's routinely,
I Never "safely remove" ..i know...,
I just pull the wire, sometimes even when transferring files.
It never overheats.
It works, what else do you want from a HD?
Next time i will buy a SATA (not USB) so i can move 200GB here and there faster.
