Experience the power and reduced weight of the new lithium-ion technology, without the high cost. Lithium-ion cordless tools provide more power with less weight. This cordless drill-driver is a more compact, lighter-weight version of the LXT 18 volt tool. It has a 1.5 amp hr battery, which is half the size of the LXT 3.0 Amp hr batteries. This is not a light-duty tool by any means; it kicks butt in the 18-volt category. It boasts 450 in./lbs. of torque! You can even use the longer run time 18-volt LXT 3.0 Amp-hr batteries in this tool (the higher the amp hr rating, the longer the battery will last before it needs to be recharged).
This cordless drill weighs only 3.5 pounds, the lightest yet of any professional 18 volt. It has a comfortable grip and excellent ergonomics, which is ideal for continual use. Located just above the trigger, are two "headlights." Headlights refer to small LED lights that provide light where you need it most. I was skeptical about this feature, thinking it was just another gimmick, but after using it for some time, I've come to depend on it. From lighting my way to the house in the dark, when bringing the batteries/tools on cold nights to providing light in a dark cabinet, closet, or under a desk, this a must-have feature. Rubber grips adorn the exterior of this tool and protect it during impact if it falls. For all that you get with this tool package, the price is unbelievably low. This 18 volt is perfect for the professional who needs a powerful cordless to use all day long.
This Makita drill also has the most advanced charging system available and it charges in only 15 minutes! Generically, it's called a "smart charging system." A computer chip inside the battery lets the charger know exactly how to optimally charge the battery, to completely charge each cell within the battery and for maximum battery life. Each battery is made up of smaller 1.2 volt cells. Often a battery will drain unevenly during normal use, at different rates within these internal cells. A normal charger will stop charging the battery when one cell reaches maximum capacity, not all of them. Once this happens once, it will continue to do so as long as you use the battery. What this means is your 18-volt battery is now a 16- or 17-volt battery and it can drop even lower. A "smart charger" will charge every cell independently until each cell is fully charged, so your 18-volt battery will remain 18 volts for its entire life. This charger has a fan in it and blows air through the battery to cool it down before charging so the battery can be charged right away, unlike other brands, where the charger waits until the battery cools, or even worse attempts to charge a hot battery pack and damages it or decreases the life of the battery. These Makita lithium-ion batteries will last longer than standard batteries and can be charged over 1200 times, as opposed to the standard of 600 to 800 times, which alone can justify the slightly higher price tag. -- Gabriel Shantara Ford

- great drill
I purchased this drill along with a Bosch 36618 and gave both a workout in my garage. My test used 2"x6" pressure treated lumber. My goal was to test power, battery endurance and comfort of use. With both drills, I drilled qty (10) 1" spade bit holes, qty (20) 3/8" bit holes and sunk qty (75) 2" drywall screws. My hand and arm were tired so I quit, but suffice it to say, neither drill quit, so I called battery endurance test a tie. I believe the Bosch had slightly more power and speed, but the Makita had plenty of both for my needs. Both drills gave your arm a good twist when the spade bit would catch and hold. In a close race, I declared the Bosch the winner in power category. The Makita was clearly a more comfortable drill to use. It fit my hand well and the trigger was easy to use. The Bosch handle is configured at a bit of an angle and while using the spade bit the back of the drill seemed to press into my hand. Also, during use my finger naturally moved to the bottom of the trigger and it became a bit uncomfortable. Both drills are very well built and neither got hot during my tests. At the end of the day I preferred the Makita because it was slightly smaller (about 3/4" shorter) and clearly had a more comfortable grip position during use.
- Best Drill Ever
I have been using this Makita Drill for almost two years, I used it and abuse it and it's working as good as the first day I bought it. I will not bore you with too much details but I will list the pros and cons
- Looks very nice
- Very Powerful
- Light weight which is very nice when you are on a ladder.
- Battery Life is Super and charges in about 10 minutes
- Small LED light is very useful
- Customer Service are real professionals from a local center and they will work hard on making you happy. I had a defective battery once as the other review said but why worry when one call can get you a new battery with no cost even for shipping?
I will let you know when I find one =)
- GREAT drill
I am a serious DIYer and have done professional contracting in my past. I own two other cordless drills and this is by far my favorite. I chose it due to its light weight and smaller size over large hammer drill types that are heavy and wont fit into as tight a space. This is the one I reacy for 95% of the time.
I would love to give this 5 stars but, like other reviewers, I have had both batteries fail in a matter of months (and now wonder if its because they were left on the charger). Makita replaced one, but the second I had to purchase a 3.0aH (larger) version. It works ok and runs longer, but is heavier.
I love this drill, and recommend it to all but full time site contractors....more info
- I love my drill
I'm a female remodeler living in Denver and I won't let any of my co-workers touch my drill. I used to use a 9 volt and this drill has so much more power I'm able to do jobs I couldn't manage before. The light weight is really important for me, too. ...more info
- Makita Driver drill
This is a fine product. It is a far better battery driven drill than the other five I have previously owned. Its light weight and power are amazing. I highly recomend this product....more info
- Finally a drill with ergonomics and convenience in mind
I have had lots of drills over the years and this one tops them all. It is small and easy to hold, yet powerful. The light is very handy when working in low light area's, which i do alot. It charges very quickly and the case has room for extra bits, etc.
Makita did well when designing this drill....more info
- Light, strong, too bad it looks like a sneaker
Excellent drill. Lots of power, so light it's deceptive. You'd think it's not going to have much torque because it feels so light, but it's got huge torque. It charges quickly and runs for a long time on that charge. I just wish it looked like a good, basic, working Makita... blue, not this Adidas look....more info
- Wonderful tool
I had looked very closely at a number of cordless drills, especially the Panasonic and DeWalt. What made me get the Makita was the feature of the ratcheting chuck that gave positive feedback on bit security. Well, the price of the refurb was pretty good, too. The drill exceeded my expectations. The 15 minute charger works as advertised. It is my first Lithium-ion powered tool and the endurance of the battery is impressive. Ver compact, it has already gotten me in places my previous drill could not....more info
- Great tool
We use these an assembly section of our factory and they are excellent. Quick charge time, good power.
- Very satisfied
Has recently started my condo renovation; this drill driver has been a big help. Compact size allow me to use it everywhere that I need it; handy and light weight. the battery last long time! I'm very happy with this purchase. a recommandation tho, I would really consider the drill driver set if anyone's thinking of heavy drilling on mansonry stuff. This one would do, but the other one has more power; get both if you knew you will be running into mansonry drilling!...more info

- Makita BDF452HW 18-volt drill kit
I'm amazed at this drill's performance when coupled with its small size, low weight and feel. The only thing I wish it had is an on-drill bit storage system. There is supposed to be a bit storage accessory available but I can't find it on the web. ...more info
- better have a strong wrist
This is a great drill. I first bought the 3ah version, BDF451, then bought this one because I hang a lot of drywall and wanted something lighter. I sometimes almost forget it's in my hand. It powers spade bits through joists no prob--in fact, the bit snagged once and the drill just about ripped my hand off my arm. It's smaller, it's lighter, and true, the battery lasts half as long, but there's no lack of power. Plus mine came with a rebate for a free third battery, so with two batteries cooking at any given time, there's always power laying around with the bigger batteries fitting the white tool (plus, and I don't know if this affects my warranty but, the smaller batteries fit in the blue tools if you chisel off that little square tab inside the rails where the battery slides on--not that I would recommend such a practice for, say, a circ saw, but there's no need for that big honkin battery on the flashlight). Only thing I think could be better is the VS--the trigger's a little too binary for my taste....more info
- Love it!
I haven't used it alot but the little that I have used it has been impressive! I used it for hanging cabinets and it had plenty of power to drive three inch screws into the studs. The led light is a great feature and charging batteries so fast is another plus. Got it for $138 before Christmas and it was well worth it!...more info
- I can't say enough great things about this drill
I love this drill. It's powerful, it's lightweight, the batteries charge quickly, I could get through large projects with one battery. What else is there to say? Best drill I've owned....more info
- Best drill I've ever purchased
I've been through quite a lot of cordless drills, I could not seem to find one that would have a decent longevity on the battery as well as good power. I should have known to chose Makita, because they manufacture quality products.
This cordless drill is lightweight (due to battery size), compact, easy to operate and I even like the small light that illuminates the work surface when you start drilling. I have been waiting for awhile for a drill that DID NOT use a NI-CD battery, due to battery memory issues and the short life span of the batteries....more info
- Damon Medic 's review
Makita BDF452HW 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Driver Drill Kit. This drill looks and feels awesome. It is convenient, lightweight, and easy to handle. Unfortunately, the batteries died after only two months of use, regardless of my religious charging. The batteries drained, and now I am kicking myself for getting a battery-charged drill! The new battery that Makita sells to make this drill continue to work, will cost me close to $100 bucks!!! Only electric drills for me from now on!
- Excellent Powerful Tool
Like most things Makita this is a superb tool. I purchased the kit which included 2 batteries for the same price as 2 replacement batteries for my old Panasonic's, and the drill is more powerful and compact than they are....more info
- Amazing drill!
This is DEFINITELY worth the money. It's light, it's ridiculously powerful, and the batteries will last longer than they need to with the amazing 15 minute recharge. Yes, they really DO fully recharge in that period. Simply put, why buy anything else?...more info
- What a great product, but with one pitfall
I've owned a 12v Dewalt drill for 10 years and although it still works great running on it's second set of battery's, I was looking for something with a bit more power,12v tools seem to run out of juice on larger heavier jobs so I was looking for an 18v drill.
Did some research and came up with the the Makita BDF452HW and ordered it from Amazon. First impressions great ! What a beautiful well balanced tool, fits in the hand very well, extremely light, ratcheting chuck, LED light, lots of torque for those heavy jobs, and the cherry on top is the quick charge Lithium ion batteries. I was very impressed with the whole package so I took it for a spin. By chance the first task that came to hand required some finesse, a 1/16" hole in a small computer connector, not the typical work for this heavy duty beast but you have to use your new toy.
When I drilled the hole, the drill bit shook and the drill itself seemed to have some vibration so I did so careful testing. After testing various bits and setups I determined that the chuck was off center and was causing any drill bits to wobble, not greatly, but enough you could feel it and enough to physically bend a small bit. I had noticed a previous review mentioned chuck wobble but after assessing the large number of positive reviews I dismissed it a just bad luck, it happens.
***** Five stars to Amazon's customer support, I returned the drill for an exact replacement, no charge and three days later I had another Makita in my hands ready to test. Sadly the second drill also suffered from the same fate, off center chuck causing the bits to wobble. I must be too critical so I compare drill holes with the Makita and my 10 year old Dewalt. I noticed two striking differences, the Dewalt was completely without any vibration, no doubt here, it was perfect. The second thing I noticed was the trigger speed control, the Dewalt was very smooth and seemed to be infinetly adjustable allowing me to very accurately control the speed, were the Makita had distinctive speed steps, not quit the control but definitely adequate. Oh yeh and the Dewalt weighted a ton compared to the Makita.
In conclusion, and honestly with great regret I sent the second Makita back for a refund ( ***** Stars to Amazon again !) and ordered the Dewalt DC720KA. It works great and has all of the features of the Makita with two exceptions, weight (its a heavy weight @ 4.8lbs but still very compact) and battery technology, still using NiCad battery's, rather than Lithium Ion.
The Makita is a great product if you can get lucky enough to get one that is put together well, sadly I had two in a row bad. Since the chuck is a little off center, this indicates poor manufacturing tolerances. This may have been a bad batch from a failed CNC machine, or it may be indicative of a more general problem, poor manufacturing practices that ultimately translate into poor quality and usually along with that a poor repair history, and a short product life. Only time will tell if this is a freak batch or indicative of a bigger issue.

Just got it for Christmas. Have used it several times and think it is a great product. Light, good torque and easy to use because it is smaller than my Milwaukee 14.4 volt drill. My wife threatens to take it for her hobby shop but she'll have to arm wrestle me for it!...more info
- Excellent Drill!
I've had this drill now for about a month and have been utilizing it during a kitchen remodel. I researched a lot (A LOT) before I decided to purchase and found this one to be the most bang for the buck. Here's what I've found so far:
Pros: Excellent power, compact, comfortable, lots of torque, lightweight
Cons: The battery power is short. I screwed up 4-4x12; 2 - 2x10; 4 - 2x8 pieces of sheetrock and used up power in one battery. My Dad's 10 year old 12v makita outlasted me. However, the second battery and 15 minute full charge time made it just fine.
Overall, I am very happy with this drill. What they say about the batteries is true. Doesn't last the longest, but it's perfect for my project and the 15 minute recharge time is great. I wouldn't hesitate in buying this one again!...more info

What can I say other than Amazon has great prices, Great product, and shipped in a timely manner!!
- Great Drill
I purchased this drill for my boyfriend for Christmas 2007 - He uses it everyday at his work, he is an airplane mechanic and does alot of screw removal inside wings, etc and says this drill is by far the best he has ever owned - It is light, durable and the light comes in handy also. The battery is recharged in a matter of minutes. He has used it on home projects and is a firm believer that Makita makes the best drill - He has owned other Makitas and has used them until they were no longer usable! I also puchased the cordless flashlight at the same time I bought the drill - both are great products and then there are 2 batteries that are usable and interchangable.
