About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Features:
  • Recumbent exercise bike with 16 levels of computer controlled, magnetic eddy current resistance
  • 17 programs (12 preset, 4 heart rate control and 1 user-defined) provide a wide range of workouts
  • Handlebars are adjustable to suit your riding position
  • Contact grip heart rate sensors enable you to monitor your fitness level
  • 56 by 25-inch footprint; 300-pound weight capacity

Good bike, reasonably easy to assemble - instructions are pretty clear. Only downside is the heart rate monitor doens't work very well, your hands have to be almost wet. Otherwise it works well....more info
  • Schwinn 203 Recumbent Exercise Bike
The bike arrived earlier than promised. Assembly went very smoothly. The small parts were well labeled and attached to a card in the order they were to be used-- very, very helpful. I assembled the bike myself, but needed a little electrical tape in order to keep the connection from the pulse sensors to the computer from coming apart during assembly.

I have arthritic knees and am overweight. This bike gives me a great workout without putting any strain on my knees. The weight has begun to melt off as I use the bike every day. I mainly use the heart rate program and was having trouble with the computer shutting down until I realized that I needed to slow down and ride against greater resistance. Now the computer works fine and it tells me I am burning more calories in each workout.

  • schwinn excercise bike
Bike serves it's purpose and allows for a decent work out. Some of the features I don't like is that you have to hit start every few minutes in manual mode to keep the count and mileage going. The print on the display which highlights the different programs is way too small.

  • Perfect
My doctor told me that riding a stationary bike or swimming are excersize that I can do with my arthritic knees. He's right! I love this bike. It's comfortable and the computer provides different programs to use or make your own. It's everything I wanted it to be. I was especially pleased with the service I got from Amazon. The bike came in a box that was not strong enough for this piece of equipment and was pretty banged up when it got here. The computer on the bike was broken and the tools and hardware for assembly were missing. I notified Amazon and they had another bike here in two days and paid for the shipping of the old one back. The second bike was not packaged any better, but it was not damaged as was the first one. I love the quality of the bike and the service that Amazon gives. Thanks Amazon...more info
  • Schwinn 203 Stationary Bike
Good quality stationary bike exactly as described and shown.
Well packed, arrived as predicted, on time and I even received personal assistance from shipper on questions and arrangements for an appointment to deliver.
This is so quiet you can hardly hear it when it is in use.
The rack for propping up a book to read while you are spinning does not hold more than a thin magazine or newspaper. Books push against the buttons causing the program to change.
    Otherwise Excellent!...more info
  • Good but some issues
Its a good bike if you're looking for something basic that will keep you "wanting" to pedal. Additionally, the range of resistance levels is excellent for building your quadriceps or just doing cardio on the light end. Digital display is straightforward and comes with a variety of preprogrammed routes. I bought mine online from modell's and of course it was damaged by the time it got to my house. The damaged parts were just aesthetic in nature though so I didn't mind. It's fairly light (100 pounds) but it will take you more than an hour to put it together. The reason is that whoever designed this thing didn't do any planning. For example, along with the instructions came an ADDENDUM that tells you not to do stage 4 of the assembly steps from the manual and actually has you UNDO steps that you've already completed! This is ridiculous enough, but in addition to that, they provide you with a HR monitor which works only if you snake a very thin wire through the entire machine and out the other end. It attaches to its counterpart wire by a very light connection. Now think about assembling a 100 pound machine and after you finish assembling it, you realize the wire popped off its partner inside (and of course you can't see that) and you need to unscrew everything and reattach the wires and try again with no guarantee of success. At the end...you find the HR monitor doesn't even work! They probably figured the parts were cheap so they include a phone # to call for troubleshooting problems with the monitor. Problem is it's not in the US so how does that help? Overall good but not worth the price b/c they're key selling point doesn't work and it seems to be a common problem....more info
  • Schwinn 203 Recumbent
Excellent for the price! Super quiet and comfortable. Programmable for up to 4 User Profiles. Assembly took less than 2 hours. Box is heavy. Make sure you check the box when delivered-open boxes should be refused, as loose parts could easily fall out....more info
  • Awesome Schwinn 203 Recumbent Exercise Bike and Delivery
This bike is awesome. It's the kind of exercise equipment you want to leave. It is so comfortable, easy to use and quiet. The preset programs really make it easy to get started. Assembly time was about 2 and 1/2 hours, however I was throwing the ball with my dog and watching TV and the same time. Assembly was pretty straight forward and if you do not try to skip steps or assemble ahead it's easy.
The whole purchase procedure and shipping from Amazon was flawless. The delivery from ABF was the best ever. ABF called and said it would be delivered Monday and we needed to have someone help the driver unload. I sent and e-mail to the ABF terminal and explained we are elderly and I just had back surgery. They delivered it Friday instead of Monday, had a special lift gate truck to unload it and the driver put the bike into our attached garage. He then opened the carton to make sure everything inside was OK. Service doesn't get any better than this!
Cons: I wish the power adapter cord was longer. It's only long enough to reach an electrical outlet if the bike is against the wall.
Gotta go now. I want to get back on my bike.
    Happy as a Lark!!

  • Almost completely satisfied
Bike arrived in an torn, crumpled box, but in a timely fashion. We feared that parts may be missing, but luckily everything was there. Bike went together fairly easily and the finished product is very stable and solid. We've used it several times are are extremely satisfied with the bike. The operation is very smooth & quiet, The seat & exercise position is comfortable and everything works great except the heart rate monitor, which has yet to give an accurate reading (not even close). All in all, this is a very good product for the money. (Note: We're very satisfied with [...] so far but many things we've purchased from them have arrived in extremely damaged shipping material.) ...more info
  • Nice bike!!
This is a very user friendly bike. I didn't have any trouble figuring anything out with putting it together or the computer. It is comfortable and extremely quiet. I think it is great when I watch TV. I will warn you though, if you are a woman, you will need a man to help you put it together. It is very heavy and the way the 2 components fit together you need 2 people and the stonger the better. Otherwise, no problems, I really am glad I bought it!...more info
  • Good product
Bought it for my wife. Delivery took longer than promised. The truck line they used was, however, very cooperative. Package arrived in good shape. Assembly was easy...say two hours or so. Have used "professional" recumbants and this unit compares favorably. I'd quibble about the pulse meter, (requires two hands)but other wise no complaints. Unit is well constructed and is a good value....more info
  • Great recumbent, works for us!
After reading many reviews for many exercise bikes this one seemed reasonably priced and the most practical for a couple of 60 year olds. It arrived package intact. IT took me about 4 somewhat tedious hours to assemble with the seat & associated wiring being most difficult. The programs are a little confusing but we eventually got it pretty well figured out. We are not heavy users, about 5 hours per week and after 2 months of use it has been trouble free (other than occasionally having to retighten the seat) & works great. I especially like that fact that it does not take up very much space. Pretty much a ditto for the Schwinn 430 elliptical which we got as a companion machine to vary our work outs. I do notice that it does not completely duplicate a road bike in the muscles used so don't expect to get on your road bike & be completely prepared for the hills!...more info
  • Excellent Buy!
This is a great bike for the money! It has a variety of programs and resistance levels. The higher resistance levels are quite challenging, so I believe this bike would be great for all fitness levels. This bike is extremely quiet during operation; it is virtually silent.
I read a review on a different site before purchase, and the "expert" stated that if you are going to get a "low end" bike, that Schwinn was the only way to go. Even though you could possibly save $100 and get a cheaper brand, it just isn't worth it. I completely agree with this reviewer. For an extra hundred dollars, you get so much more. I am extremely happy with this purchase!
Assembly was fairly easy and all of the necessary tools were included in the box. I have had the bike for a little over a month, and I have not experienced a single problem with the performance or construction of the bike....more info
  • easier than I thought
I was hesitant about assembling the bike myself (I'm a proverbial ten-thumber), but it was surprisingly easy to put together without any help, and all the necessary tools and parts are included. I only have a few parts left over that don't in any way seem to affect use or safety. Some of the leftover parts are because I made a little goof, but there's also one that I'm certain doesn't go anywhere on the bike (maybe it's from an earlier model?).
The "ride" is comfortable and quiet. It makes it easy for me to exercise and be a couch potato at the same time.
Important advice: after it arrives at your doorstep, make sure you have someone big and strong to help you bring the boxed unit inside to where you want it. I'm assuming FedEx will treat you like they did me and leave it at your door and disappear without ringing your doorbell because they don't want to move it inside for you (in defense of FedEx, they may not be allowed to bring it inside, but either way, I never got a chance to ask). Just remember, this puppy is heavy!
Overall, I'd say I'm quite pleased with the product, the price and the efficiency of delivery (it arrived in only a few days)....more info
  • Pretty good exercise bike -- especially for the price.
I've had the Schwinn 203 for about 1.5 months now. The quality is pretty decent. The only item that I noticed needs improvement is the fit between the seat and the seat adjustment rail. There is a slight gap between the two which causes a slight rocking with an associated creak when pedaling. Beyond that the machine is well made and silent. It also features 16 levels of resistance which can give even those with strong legs a rigorous workout. Plan to spend 2 hours for assembly....more info
  • Good solid workout!
This bike provides a nice change of pace to the typical treadmill workout; the bike is easy and enjoyable and is easier on the knees. We are all working out using this bike and it seems to be working well for our family. Even our teenage daughter is pedeling away! It is made really well....more info
  • Nice exercise bike without the premium price!!
I purchased this bike as an alternative to always rowing or ellipticalling. It didn't have a premium price, so I was skeptical about the quality. Most exercise bikes, the seats are really annoying when they shift side to side when riding.

No problems what-so-ever. It's actually makes you want to go workout. And since it's not as loud as a treadmill, you can watch tv and exercise without disrupting everyone else in the house.

The only problem I encountered was a faulty cord that was fed up inside the tube to connect the control board. Customer service was helpful once I diagnosed the problem and I had a replacement cord in a couple days.

Highly recommended - Quality and Good Value....more info
  • Wrong Choice
Purchased this bike from Academy $349.99. Drove the 80 miles one way to pick up at nearest store. Assembly was fairly straight forward,, Needed help from wife to hold a few things for me. Plastic cap on rear leg was broken. After assembly, plugged adapter in and wanted to test the bike... NO POWER. Computer would not work. Disassembled mast, checked wiring, wiring OK, reassembled, still no power. Called Customer Service, waited 5 minutes on hold, no answer. Will be taking the bike back to Academy for full refund. Read several reviews where this bike was the bike to purchase... WRONG..... Will look at other brands now....more info

  • Execelent inexpensive Bike
I purchased this bike for my wife It is an execelent product for the money it is very sturdy, easy to assemble (as long as your a little mechanically inclined). Its true if your less than 5'2" you will need pillows to get close enough to the pedals Im 6'2" and there is still room to move the seat back. Product arrived ahead of schudle and in good shape. My folks purchased a bike for $1200 yes it is nicer (the preset programs and overall looks)but not by much. I would buy this again if I needed to. Negatives- screen hard to read for shorter people. and you have to plug it in to a wall outlet. ...more info
  • So quiet I thought it wasn't working!!!
I ordered the Schwinn 203 just a week ago. It was eligible for free delivery and I took advantage of that offer. It stated that it would take extra time for delivery, however it arrived within a week. Though several have stated it was difficult to put together and took several hours my highly non-mechanical wife and I had it together in about an hour and fifteen minutes. The directions are a bit tricky but knowing that in advance from the other reviews helped. Once we were finished assembling it I got on it and started it up and began peddling. I was sure it was not working correctly becuase there was absolutely no sound at all--mechanical or otherwise. I then reached over and increased the resistance and found out it was working correctly. My wife and I both use it and love it. I am 325 pounds and it works great for me and based on several nights of extreme sweating during my workouts I don't expect to be 325 for long. Super bike!! Very pleased...besides this is what my knee surgeon suggested for rehabilitating a knee I torn up last year and it's doing fine....more info
  • Durability - 2yrs Computer
Computer failed and had to be replaced at 2 yrs and about 300 hours of use. Had to use the bike shop (where purchased) to look at the unit and they were able to get a replacement part from Nautilus, Inc. Total cost for the repair came to over $200 - which seems a little pricey for only a little over 26 mos of use, especially since it's about 50% the price of a new one.

Try finding the part number for the computer ....

FYI - the part this week is Nautilus p/n 25059 and is named a Console - made in China, of course, and fits both the 103 and 203 -

LIKES: extremely quiet, easy to use, can watch/do/be in the room with others doing TV/paperwork/conversation ... etc. I like to set the heart rate and the computer does the rest to keep up with stepping the resistance to keep it at the same rate. This function works well, however it would be nice to have a selectable lower 'step up rate' from the start as sometimes at the 4 to 6 minute mark will be very difficult while attempting to get the heart rate up, and can be almost extra strain to the knees at this point. But, once the heart rate gets to pace, riding for the rest of workout is very well done.

The unit is very robust and stable when using, and hence the heavy mass to accomplish it is appreciated.

DISLIKES: Magnets will rattle at times, Heart monitor sometimes gets lost and then under/over shoots your heart rate setting. Purchasing parts can be a challenge outside the channels of a specialized bike shop.

MAJOR DISLIKE: Had a 2 yr expensive computer (replacement) failure. If it should fail again, it will be history. Did not find that anyone else has reported failures other than initial shipment problems, so I might have just been the 1 in a million to get one that would fail.

Feel free to contact me (Nautilus, Schwinn, etc.. ) if you would desire. I happen to be an Engineer for a manufacturing company.

  • Love my bike!
I love this bike. The price was reasonable, the operation smooth and remarkably quiet. My only complaint is that the assembly instructions were wrong. I managed to assemble it myself (I'm a mechanically challenged 55 yr old woman with bad knees!) but when I was all done I had parts left over. Not a good thing! I went back over the instructions and one step was completely left out. I would recommend going by the diagram, not so much by the written instructions.
I use this bike every day, I would recommend it....more info

  • Happy with the Schwinn 203
I am age 60,have plantar fasciitis (foot pain) and cannot leave my disabled husband alone, so needed a way to exercise indoors. This 203 Schwinn recumbent has been excellent. It is clearly a quality product, very quiet. The seat is supportive and comfortable, so I do not need to use my hands to steady myself. Thus I have begun doing arm lifts and such while I ride, for a more complete workout. I am a short 5 foot 2 1/2 inches, but on the closest seat setting, I can reach the pedals fine. Anyone much shorter or with very short legs might have problems reaching. Also, it is not the 'walk-through' kind, so you must be able to lift your leg over the center section to use it. I wish it had a brighter or lighted digital readout, and that it would read my pulse with only one hand on the side sensors, but those are small problems. I recommend it highly and would choose it again....more info
  • Comfortable & Quiet
I've had this bike for about a month now and it runs smoothly, went together fairly easy, and best of all ITS QUIET! Something I seriously appreciate in exercise equipment is when I can actually hear the television over the machine. The complaints about the box falling apart during shipping is legitimate. The bike I received had a cracked cover because of the dent in the box (arrived when I was at work or I'd have sent it back). When I called for service I was greeted promptly, promised a replacement cover, and told that although they were instructed to tell me ten days they'd bet more like 3-5. They even suggested that I consider where I was in the setup before I assembled the bike and whether or not I'd want to take it apart to put the new part in. Very positive experience... now if I could just get myself to spend more time on it!...more info
  • Worthless

  • Schwinn recumbant exercise bike
We love our new Schwinn exercise bike! I checked consumer reports and this one was the best for the price (340.00). We were extremely happy with the fast shipping of the bike- although the box was bashed in on the corners and box open!! The assembly was direct and not difficult except for the shoving of the back (seat) section into the front half of the bike. It took all of our strength, then we realized that the wiring was cramped up inside and we had to pull it apart again. The next time we shoved the two together,it slid easily and we watched for the wires. This caution is not in the instructions- you may even need to tape the wire to hold it in place- maybe not the best design. Everything else is an absolute peach! The seat is very comfortable, the monitor/display is easy to read, the seat is adjustable for two tall people- the bike is super comfortable. The warranty is at least a year. Thanks Schwinn, thanks Amazon for helping us get back in shape in time for Summer!...more info

We received our unit in good condition with minimal exterior damage to the cardboard container. Operation of the bike is very smooth and quiet. The seat is comfortable and stable, which is not true of some other bikes I've tried.
