Customer Reviews:

  • Good rower
Upon opening the box, the parts to be assembled were very well built and dependable. All joints are fitted together tightly with steel bolts, and all parts can be replaced. Rowing action is dependable and smooth, and resistance is about the same as one would expect from an air rower, depending on the speed at which the action is carried out.

Overall, the rower is dependable, sturdy and effective, with a stable frame, reliable action, and adequate resistance. A good buy....more info
  • Made very cheap
When I received the package, almost every plastic part was broken. It wasn't packaged very well. It just laid in a bag in the box with no support to stop it from moving during shipment. Some parts of the metal were even bent. I wear a size 8.5 (womens) and the foot pedals are still too big for my feet. Everything started squeaking about a half hour into exercising. However, despite everything being broken, I fixed what I could and it still works and does its job. The only part I don't like is you have to unscrew part of the arms in order to properly fold them for storage....more info
  • Stamina Rowing Machine
Well priced, sturdy, and effective. For those of you who complained about your feet sliding out of the foot-rests I suggest using the attachment straps to permanently hold a pair of tennis shoes and just slide your feet into the tennis shoes. Even tennis shoes that are too big work. In case more than one of you uses the rower just use the bigger shoe size....more info
  • Really like this rower
I have been using this rower for about a month now. I really like it. It is very reasonably priced (I paid $169 including shipping) and pretty easy to assemble. I assembled it myself and I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. I am on the small side (5 foot 3 in, size 7 feet). I had read that some people had trouble with the machine due to size. I have had no substantive difficulty. My feet do slip out, I have to tighten the velcro straps a couple of times. I am thinking of getting additional straps to hold my feet on the pedals, but it is not a huge problem. The movement is a little jerky, but not bad. I bought the machine to see if I like rowing as a permanent part of my exercise routine (I do!) and I did not want to spend a lot of money to find this out (I did not). If/when I want to upgrade to a higher quality machine, I will, but I expect to pay a lot more for the machine then to get the smoother function, more padded seat, etc. But for now, this inexpensive rower is value for the money....more info
  • A great machine at a great price
I've really enjoyed my glider so far. It's a great workout, and has plenty of resistance settings to handle just about any fitness level. Putting it together was pretty simple. There was one broken plastic trim part, and the Stamina folks replaced it quickly without any hassle. I'm looking forward to a number of years of workouts with my glider....more info
  • Not built to last
If you are looking for a rower to use on an occassional basis, than this machine is for you. If you use it every other day, which I did, than I suggest you look elsewhere. My machine broke down after three months of continuous use. The shock absorber began breaking down slowly, first occassionally losing resistance around the 30 minute mark of working out , to eventually giving out completely. ...more info
  • Exactly what i expected
I read lots of reviews for this model and similar models before deciding on this one for a gift for my 6'3" boyfriend. I am nearly a foot shorter and we both have found this works great for us. i assembled it myself in less than an hour and found the directions and parts perfectly accurate.
it stores so well upright and we use it in a relativly small space. i am very happy with my purchase. my feet do slip from the foot holds if i am not wearing sneakers and do not strap myself in tightly enough but i'm ok with that. for the price its a great fit for the both of us....more info
  • Its good for the money-not great!
I'm a woman thats 5'5, 125 lbs, I found it easy to put together, One thing I didnt like is that there are no exercise instructions at all-nothing. I found some rowing vids on youtube. I didnt have a problem with the pedals but they could have been made better. The rowing bars are not even, though I put it together right.

The machine squeaks LOUD. Solution I put clear plastic packing tape all around the inside and now its so quiet.

My back hurts after I'm donw rowing. And the calorie count says I only burned 13 calories for 20 minutes of steady rowing.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but im not too happy with this machine....more info
  • Great product but...
The foot rest straps leave a little to be desired! Using a rower requires your feet to be planted securely, and the straps and their location on the foot rests need re-design work. I am a petite female and my size 6 feet do not adequately stay planted under the straps. Where the straps should be going across the meaty party of your foot, the straps barely graze my toes. With some rigging of another strap I could use the machine with complete confidence my feet would stay on it. Yes the machine is very affordable, but the location of the straps make this worthless if you can't use it correctly. I love rowing machines and was very excited to get this in the mail--imagine my dismay when my feet wouldn't stay under the straps! So word to the shorter wise--if you add another strap (can be gotten with velcro at numerous stores) around the top part of your foot closer to your ankle--the machine will work as intended!...more info
  • Pedals are an absolute deal-breaker
This seems like it would be a fine product--if I could keep my feet from slipping out of the pedals after four or five strokes. A flat piece of plastic with a single velcro strap over the toes doesn't cut it, folks.

PS: I am 6'4" with size 12 feet, so this problem is not limited to those with a small shoe size....more info
  • ALMOST as good as my old Pienert 26' Rowing Shell
Very reasonably priced, I took advantage of the free shipping and Amazon had it here in 2 days. The assembly was painless, great instructions, very little to assemble and even had tools included, 15 minutes after UPS dropped it off I was "rowing."

It is VERY quiet, you can watch a movie or listen to your iPod while exercising and not disturb anyone.

THE ONLY BAD POINT I will gripe about is that the "out-riggers" (metal pipe that extends the "oar locks" or in this case the hinge point) need to be twice as wide, they are about 16" and need to be about 35". I may "hack" this "mod" myself because after having a real rowing shell this - though WAY BETTER than any other erg I have used - really isn't as comfortable as my old boat.

Bottom line: If you want a great low impact work out for very little money I would highly reccomend this machine!...more info
  • Great Rowing Machine and a Great Value.
I give this rower 5 stars because it exceeded my expectations for the price. I don't think you will find a better value on a rowing machine. I've had it for a couple weeks now and have found it easy to get into a routine with this machine. Assembly was easy and took 30 minutes or so. It provides a great workout that I can definitely feel.

The independent moving arms are so much better than just pulling on a T-bar. You can get a nice pull with a good range of motion that makes it easy to find a comfortable groove for your rowing. The machine is well built and sturdy. The size of the machine is compact but I don't find it small feeling when I use it. I am 6'1" 175lbs and I am comfortable on it.

I was worried that the shock providing the resistance would be weak and/or jerky. I was pleased to find that the gas shock provides resistance that is easily adjustable and very consistent and smooth through the whole stroke. Setting the resistance to 1 provides very little resistance, while 12 provides quite a bit (I am in decent shape and have had it set at about 6, which provides plenty of resistance. You'd have to be a beast to row for any length of time on 12, so you don't need to worry about it).

Overall, this is the best piece of cardio workout equipment I have bought and I expect I will get a lot of use out it. Just crank some music and get in the groove!...more info
  • Body trac Rowing Machine is great.
I bought this rowing machine because I can not do high impact workout because of a back injury. The Body Trac Glider is great for my type of workout, I need something to get my heart beat up (aroebic) but not hurt my back. This is the right machine for that. There is not much I can say that has not been said already in the review posted on line. I do agree with the good ones. It is not perfect but for the money it is a fine bargain. Also the service from Amazon was great as always is.

  • Missing/Broken Pieces in Shipment
Quality control is apparently a problem with this product. The meter post is defective (the extension wire that connects to the meter is missing), the two screws used for attaching the meter to the meter post are missing and one screw for attaching the rear seat stopper to the center beam is missing. Stamina's Customer Service is supposed to ship replacements in 7-10 days. Assuming the correct parts arrive, we will try again to assemble the rower. ...more info
  • Good enough
Setup was fine and easy. All the parts were there. The machine works fairly well. It's smooth and the action on the arms is good. I found that for the first stage of the row (when you are pushing with your legs) that I (6' tall male) have very little resistance, but once my legs are extended, then it's pulling back against me. To get a good workout right off the bat I use it on almost the max setting. Overall I think for the price the equipment is well designed, I just hadn't considered that unlike rowing at the gym, the machine isn't constantly pulling back against you, so your workouts aren't very hard unless you really apply yourself to rowing very quickly....more info
  • The Best Money That I Ever Spent.
I simply love it. During high school and college i used to row competitively. The Stamina 1050 feels a lot like the real thing.
i bought it so that i can start watching TV without the guilt of not being at the gym. It works perfectly. i use it for about 5 to 8 hours a week and i LOVE it....more info
  • Disappointed
Just received mine and put it together. First off, like a lot of other reviews, mine also was missing screws needed for assembly.

The other problem is that the pedals are absolute junk. I can't keep my feet in them (size 9 1/2 shoes), so the machine is really unusable. Also, one of the velcro straps ripped at the seam in the first 3 minutes of me trying to work out.

If the pedals weren't so terrible, I think it would be a nice machine. As it is, I'm going to try and rig something up to hold my feet on....more info
  • great rower
i love my new rower! i wanted something that would work all of my body not just some parts. i can feel that its working because my stomach and legs are sore. (: i see complaints on here about the foot pedals, i've found that if i do it with shoes on, it gives it a better grip and won't slip out. so, i am unable to use this machine barefoot or with socks only. but, i'm new to it, so i hope to buff up my whole body! ...more info
  • Some reservations
Overall my expectations were met. The machine is a good value considering it is priced very reasonably but it has weaknesses. It arrived with minor damage that I was able to fix with superglue and was not worth going through the hassle of contacting Amazon for: plastic cover on the front of the main beam was shattered but all the pieces were in the plastic bag containig the machine, so I could put it back together (was kinda fun, like a 3D puzzle). The left rear portion of the beam had a slight bend which was not in a position where it could affect the rolling of the seat (would have been a serious problem otherwise).
I ran into the footstrap problem described by others. I solved that by wearing sneakers and strapping my feet really tight, no need for additional strapping or anything else.
The machine does not provide a real outrigger motion, the pivot points are not in a position to do that. Furthermore, if you try to reproduce the idea of moving oars, the bolts tend to slowly undo at the pivot points, it's better to just go back and forth.
I am in good shape to start with and I got the machine to get a little work out at home when I have only 15 or 20 minutes to spare. It does that OK, but I have to set the hydraulic actuator at the highest level to get decent resistance once it's fully warmed up (takes a good 5 minutes). Then the problem is that the load bearing hubs on each end of the actuator are made of plastic (!). They tend to wear and enlarge with the high resistance at level 12. I have been looking for a metal spacer matching the internal diameter of the bolt and the external diameter of the actuator end to prevent the plastic from wearing too much (creates a lot of noisy play when reversing direction of motion). I will certainly have to have it machined to specs but once I have that, I am convinced that I can keep and use the machine regularly for a long time to come. However, I will probably get a Kettler as soon as I can....more info
  • awesome
This is my first time experiencing the Stamina Body Trac Glider 1050 Rowing Machine. I read the reviews before I purchased it and was convinced that it was a strong piece of equipment for the price. I ordered it on Tuesday 12/3/08 and received it on Wednesday - 12/4/08. Wow!!! I couldn't believe for that price they produced a machine that was so solid and looked great. My husband assembled it in less than half an hour which was a breeze and then I got on it. I mastered rowing right away and I wished I had this piece of equipment from the get go. I stayed on it for 36 minutes and couldn't believe how great my whole body felt. I expected my knees, which are a problem, to start bothering me like it does on my recumbent bike and regular bike and sometimes even on my threadmill, but no pain or discomfort. Hmmm.. I thought, this is really awesome. That was Best Part No. 1. Best Part No. 2 is how much calories I burned in that short period of time and how my heart rate was good. The punchline and Best Part No. 3 was that this cheap little equipment was so versatile in the upper body movement - I was able to row outwards/inwards almost like a circular motion, and forward/backwards - and all I kept thinking is Wow!! At this point I looked at my other equipments in my little gym and thought "what a waste of space".
Downside: I would have given a 5 star, but the footrest could have been better. The footrest was a bit bothersome for me since I have smaller feet. I think Stamina should have made two sizes, Medium for smaller feet and Large for bigger feet or made the rubber slippery proof. I love this piece of equipment and would hope that they would fix that little problem with the footrest. ...more info
  • Perfect for My Needs
I needed a simple rowing machine for cardiovascular workouts of 30-40 minutes. And I didn't want to spend a fortune for features I wouldn't use.

This one is perfect for me. Combined with a $40-dollar wrist-chest heart monitor, I'm getting what I want for just over $200!

    PROS
    * Inexpensive.
    * Excellent customer service. I had a problem with the shock and they sent me a new one immediately, without my having to return the old one. (See CONS below.)
    * Useful readout display.
    * Folds and stores easily.
    * Seems well made. I'm 5'10", 188 lbs., and it feels solid under me.

    CONS
    * Unclear assembly instructions.
    * The box was missing a washer (not essential) and the plastic base plate had a crack in it (not significant).
    * The original shock lost resistance as it got hotter. I had to keep cranking it up. They replaced it immediately, and the new one is better, but I think it too leaks a little. It's not a fatal problem, but I would have like the highest resistance to be close to impossible to pull.
    * Those foot pads are a problem. The bottom lip is too short, so the Velcro straps need to be really tight to keep one's feet from slipping down.
    * The hard seat is not the most comfortable, but a small cushion fixes that.

The PROS outweigh the CONS for me. I'm getting daily workouts for less than I would have paid for just two months at the gym, and without having to leave the house....more info

  • good machine
The only issue I have with this machine is that the foot straps are positioned to high for someone with average size feet. • Great For the Price
I had this rowing machine on my wishlist and got it for my birthday because I've been looking for lightweight, easy to store exercise equipment for my condo. I'm a busy med student with weird hours so having home fitness equipment in my home is great so I don't have to trudge to the gym at scary hours.

This rowing machine is pretty decent for the price. It gives you a real rowing motion rather than just pulling straight back on a bar. Also, it doesn't take much time to put together and folds up to store easily standing on its end. It's a sturdy little piece of equipment and I'm pleased with the quality given it's price!

The only cons is that it's just not as good as a rower you'd find in the gym. It doesn't give you the same resistance or same sweat-busting workout. However, it's definitely better than nothing and works well! If you're looking for a great rower that works your abs and back as much as your arms, you're probably going to have to spend more because I don't feel my abs working with this machine almost at all (and I know the proper way to row so I'm guessing it's just not enough resistance for me) - but if you're looking for something that won't take up much space and still give you a decent workout, this machine is great for the price!...more info
  • Number 1 value rower
I have been using the rower for around and month and am very pleased. I increment by 10 the number I do each time. An easy way to increase your endurance. I had no issues with noise as others have mentioned and my feet stay in the holders as long as I tighten the straps very tight (may be an issue for some weaker users).

    Pros:
    Light weight
    Compact
    Very economical
    Realistic rowing movement

    Cons:
Feet holders/straps could be better designed
    Made in China...more info
  • I've had this for 1 1/2 years - still a great machine
I've used this machine for 45 min every other day for a year and a half. It is this only exercise that I do and I have seen remarkable results. I am 30 years old and I have lost thirty pounds of fat and have turned an average body type in an athletic one. My back and shoulders have especially benefited. Those are the results you can expect from using this low impact, compact, easy to use and actually pretty fun piece of exercise equipment - all form the comfort of your living room.

As for the machine itself: Pros:
It is sturdy - I am 6'2" and 190lbs (started at 220lbs) and have never had a problem with stability.

I like the free rowing arms (as opposed to a bar like I've seen at gyms), gives the feel of a real row boat and also allows for exercising different parts of arms and back.

Quick results - and probably quicker if I made some changes to my diet.

    Cons:

Calorie counter sucks butt. Infact the computer in its entirety isn't all that great. Keeps time and number of strokes accurately though.

    Pretty squeaky. Always has been.

    Bottom line:

If your looking for a machine to get the job done and you don't need a lot bells and whistles - get this machine.

    45min = 1000 rows average
    3 x week = 3000 rows a week
1.5 years = 234,000 rows in total and this machine is still going with no maintenance. ...more info
  • passing grade but not an A
It took a few calls to customer service to get the machine working. One entire assembly was missing from the original packaging, and the display unit was defective. However, their customer service was courteous and quickly shipped replacement parts at no charge.

The rower itself, now that I have it assembled, is fine. I'm 5'9" and haven't experienced any of the fit issues that other people have observed. The display is rather simple; there's no "distance" or "pace" measurements, just elapsed time and strokes (plus "calories" but there's no way that value is accurate.) I just use a digital metronome as my "coxswain." ...more info
  • Excellent, compact, affordable exercise equipment
Having gone through two other rowers previously, each in the $300 - $650 price range, I considered it a significant risk to pick up a really low end rower. Upon arrival, however, the 1050 was a very pleasant surprise. Assembly was simple, and at around 35 pounds, this unit is very easy to move (relative to other exercise equipment). The unit's footprint is reasonable, and it folds up well for long-term storage. The multiple piston resistance settings are quite nice, especially compared to my previous magnetic-driven rower, and the single piston design makes the unit quieter than my previous dual-piston unit.

On the negative side, I would not recommend this unit for anyone living in a single-room or studio apartment, since it cannot slide under a bed and one would not want to fold it up into its storage position if using the unit daily. The unit is louder than high end air resistance rowers, but I am still able to watch tv at a pleasant volume while rowing. Regarding resistance, after about 5 minutes of rowing, the piston does warm up and drop in resistance, so I would not recommend this to experienced rowers or anyone looking to build up muscle mass. As a daily aerobic exercise which is easy on the joints and helps keep you healthy, this is great, though, for an excellent price!...more info

  • Excellent machine with one drawback
I normally don't leave reviews even though I rely on them myself for advice when purchasing items online. So for what it's worth here is my take on this rower.

I can't speak for customer service problems or bad shipments that result in broken pieces. However most of the reviews deal with the foot rests. Most people think it is the straps that are bad. If they would examine the product while in use and not is use they would know the straps are fine. It the actual foot supports that are bad. The heel support on them is way too shallow. This is what is causing peoples feet to fall out. My fix until I can find some better foot supports to use on this machine is this.

(By the way it isn't pretty but it works.)

I took 6 3" deck screws and screwed 3 in on each foot support at the heel. This extends the support for your heels. Your shoes and feet will not move at all. This will take the stress away that some people are complaining they are having on their legs. You can cut the ends of the screws that come out of the bottom with bolt cutters. You don't have to because the angle of the foot supports prevents them from hitting anything.

Now some people are complaining about the shock absorber. First thing this is basically a cardio machine. I'm not trying to get big I'm trying to work up a sweat and burn calories. I can lift weights for bulk or tone muscles. Second, the shock is basically like the shock on the rear window of an suv. Over time this shock gets worn out and needs to be replaced. Now it may take ten years or more before that happens because you are probably only opening that rear window now and then. Now consider you are using a shock for 30 minutes of consistent rowing everyday or every other day. The life of it is going to go out. I don't agree with a 1 star rating from someone who used this consistently for three months or more and then their mad because something that can be easily replaced wears out and doesn't last longer than what they feel it should last. Especially considering the price of this machine compared to another machine or a monthly fee at a gym.

    Use some common sense people.

So in my opinion the machine is 4 stars. I would have given it 5 had the foot supports been made properly.

  • Great machine but wish it was flatter
If youre looking for a machine which will get your body moving yet not make too much noise, this is the machine for you. The only minus on it, is the display/timer which if made shorter, would have allowed this machine to almost fold completely flat. Unfortunatly, due to the timer it doesnt. It does however stand to the size of a super large vacuum cleaner, which I stand in a corner. I think its a great buy for the price overall....more info

I find this machine quite easy to work and have no problems with the footing for my feet. This machine is great for apartments. It's too small to overpower everything else in the room (unlike a treadmill or eliptical) but long enough for full extension of the legs and arms. It's beautiful! I haven't had the need to store it, yet, but the way it was packed in the slender box it came in, I have no doubts that it can be stored easily.
