Rowing provides an efficient, effective, low-impact workout that utilizes all the major muscle groups, including the back, legs, arms, abdominals and buttocks. It is also one of the best exercises for building a strong back, as well as one of the most effective low-impact aerobic exercises for increasing your metabolism. As a result, you can efficiently burn calories and fat without impacting your joints.
The continuous, non-impact movement of rowing can be broken down into three phases: the starting point is called the catch phase, followed by the drive phase, the finish, and the recovery. In the catch phase, knees are bent with shins vertical and shoulders and arms reaching forward. This phase mimics the point where the oars are being placed in the water. The drive phase is initiated by the legs. As the legs extend, your arms remain straight until the knees are mostly extended. Then the elbows flex bringing the oar handles into the upper stomach. In the finish, the legs are fully extended, your shoulders are back, your elbows are flexed, and the oar handle is against the upper stomach. For the recovery, your knees don't flex until after your hands pass over your knees and your arms and shoulders reach forward to begin the catch phase again.
Because rowing is an impact-free activity, it can be a lifelong form of exercise. It is always best to exercise in your target heart rate zone (70 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate).
- Precision rowing machine with deluxe ball-bearing rolling system
- Smooth hydraulic cylinder action with adjustable tension controls
- Multifunction fitness monitor tracks speed, distance, strokes, and more
- Thick padded seat and pivoting footplates for maximum comfort
- Measures 32.5 x 27.75 x 48 inches (W x H x D); weighs 47 pounds
- Pretty poor quality
Purchased this for use in my basement. It got some light use for about 3 weeks. After that, I found that one of the rollers underneath was fragmenting, making a smooth "row" difficult.
Long story short, I could not really figure out what the issue was as I was preparing for a trip out of the country. Trying to be a good citizen, I called Stamina first and was told that they would send me new higher quality rollers at once. After about 10 business days, (they had told me 5-7) I called back. The parts are on back order.
The roller only got worse, and now is unusable.
So I have a useless rower in the basement. Unbeatable sales will not take it back, and 3 weeks later i still do not have replacement rollers.
I know it is my fault for not figuring out the issue (during return period) before I had to leave the country, but obviously I had a few things on my mind at the time.
Stamina needs to get it's part supplies figured out, and I would not order from this company again. ...more info
- good for what it is, but there are serious limitations
I bought this rower because our basement ceiling is too low for an elliptical trainer. Turns out, I really enjoy rowing and as I get more experienced I have learned the limitations of this one.
Pros: solid for the price, comfortable seat, a good muscle workout.
I am 5'4" and the unadjustable handles are too high for me. They seemed fine at first, but then I used the Concept 2 at the gym and realized that I naturally hold the handle lower down (as opposed to up near my shoulders) when I have the option. As I researched proper rowing form, it turns out my instinct was correct. When I do a longer row on the Stamina, my wrist bother me.
Also, the Stamina is hard to pull, even at the easiest level. It will loosen up and you will get stronger, but I was unable to get a good aerobic workout at first because I couldn't row quickly enough. Again, not a problem on the Concept 2.
Finally, the monitor is in miles, not meters, but all rowing training and race literature is in meters. And the monitor does not show strokes per minute, a figure that is also standard in the training literature.
Conclusion: This will give you a decent workout, but may cause arm or wrist discomfort if you aren't just the right height for the machine. And, if you becoming serious about training, you may be frustrated by the inadequate monitor. I'm glad I bought this because it taught me how much I enjoy rowing, but it is no comparison to the Concept 2 and I plan to upgrade. ...more info
- Difficult to assemble but good to use
I am not mechanical so I had to pay someone to assemble the rower and it turned out we were missing 2 small parts which I had to order. That said, I am very pleased with it. It gives your whole body, including your heart, a good workout. I wish you could stand it up when it's not in use, but if you have the space, it's a great machine for the price....more info
- Good value, fits under the bed.
I'm pleased with this purchase. I was unwilling to spend a fortune knowing that most exercise equipment goes unused after a few months - and didn't want it taking up lots of room. I picked this rower based on the price and hoped that it would fit under my bed. It was fairly easy to assemble. It just barely fits under the 7.5 inch frame of my bed with the seat off (it slips off easily). I've used it vigorously for 5 months and am delighted with the workout and have gradually been able to increase the tension.
A couple problems have surfaced over time:
1) It squeeks.
2) The timer/stroke counter display failed after 4 months; even though out of warrenty, Stamina quickly shipped me a new one at no charge.
3) The shocks get HOT after a workout and melted the foam hand hold on one of the arms. I have to remember to keep the arms elevated for a while after I'm done.
All in all, this has been a good machine at a great price which I continue to use regularly....more info
- Does the job
I bought this based on the reviews here and the price. I needed something small, quiet and effective - and this one is all of them.
It took awhile to put together and, because it came partially assembled, I was looking for parts that I thought were missing.
As far as Stamina's customer service is concerned, when one of the shocks started to slip (not offer resistance)- I e-mailed my replacement order on a Thursday evening (covered by warranty) via their website and the new part arrived on the following Tuesday.
I'd buy another one of these anytime.
- Great workout; doesn't take up much space
I have really enjoyed this piece of workout equipment. In 30 minutes I get a great workout; especially upper body. I have to really concentrate on working out my hips and legs; I need to create my own resistence for the lower part of my body. That would be my only complaint. It's fairly easy to put together. The only complaint I would have on the instructions is it would be nice if they labeled all the screws and washers with a matching number. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out which was which. Otherwise, it only took about an hour to put together. Overall, I would definitely recommend this piece of equipment....more info
I've owned this for nearly six months now, and much like any other exercise epquipment I've bought stopped using it after a couple of weeks.
This has little to do with the product, more my motivation. I think the key is to change things around. Needless to say I've started again.
This is a fun and easy product to assemble, and the instructions are clear and simple to follow.
Now from use I've discovered that it does squeak a little from the shocks. It's no big deal just have to turn the volume up on the TV.
After about 45 mins use the seat becomes a little uncomfortable, but really just sitting in one place would to the same - quick fix, just move around a little!
I've also just fixed those squeaking shocks???? easy just some WD40 oil, or any light spray lubricate. I sprayed this on the exposed metal rod that goes in and out, and on the rubber grommets where the bolts hold the said shocks to the frame.....result no squeaks!
I'm happy with this in all. It's a great machine. It's only 4 stars because of the squeaks, and the seat. However for the money, it's a great buy and hopefully my next use will last a bit longer :)...more info
- A good economical machine
For the money, this rower is pretty good. After a month, however, it started to squeak where the arms join the shocks. The seat runs very smoothly and so quietly along the 'runners' (which I really like), and is cushioned nicely. There is a big difference in tension between the first (lowest) setting and the second setting, especially at first; but after rowing for several minutes, the shocks seem to 'loosen up' a bit, and become easier. The foot braces are a bit large for my feet, without shoes, so the average person may want to wear shoes. The padding on the handle bars was worn away in places within the first month; this is with 4-5 days/week use. I have never used any other kind of rowing machine, so I have nothing else to compare it to. Perhaps a little more money spent on a more expensive rower would be worth it, however, for my budget, this rower works just fine....more info
- Worth the money!
I received my Stamina Precision Rower last week and assembled it over the weekend. It seemed a bit daunting at first (so many parts!) but it's not rocket science. I am glad I chose to ignore those reviewers who gave it a low rating, because I am quite satisfied with the product. As for the tightness of the shocks, the resistance can be changed by adjusting the knobs on the sides of the shocks.
Two things could do with some improvement, though. First, the manual is good at helping you to assemble the product, but after that, you're on your own. For instance, it was only through trial and error that I found that the highest resistance was "1" and the lowest was "5" - usually, it's the other way around - and the manual does not even tell you how to deal with that. Second, it would be nice to have some wheels (as is found on some stationery bikes) so that moving it from place to place would be a bit easier, even though the product is only about 40 lbs.
All in all, I am quite happy with my purchase, and would recommend it to anyone....more info
- Row, Row, Row Your Body
This product arrived timely and the metal construction makes it sturdy. Set up was easy-close to an hour. The mechanisms, i.e. the handles, seat and footrests are comfortable. This rower really challenges the user and it does work the arms, abs, back and legs and with the monitor it is great to gauge your progress. The only concern I had is on the first day of use the monitor died. Customer service representatives for both Amazon and the Stamina Corporation were responsive and I chose to deal with the Stamina representatives. After a week and a half of numerous two-way communication with a representative from Stamina and replacement parts that were sent but did not coordinate with this particular model, I received a monitor that now works and am on my way to a stronger, more fit and toned body by rowing. I would recommend this rower for a challenging workout; but would question the location of the monitor. ...more info
- I would give zero star if there was a choice.
The tension on shocks is really high thus it is extremely hard to pull the levers for exercising. I did not see the solution for this in the manual.
The assembly instructions are useless.
- It's easy to setup and use!
After reading all the reviews we decided to get this product. I can say I don't mind sitting down and working out. assembly was very easy. I really like the ability to adjust the resistance in the arms. Some days are a faster lower resistance workout and others I raise the level and go for power.
The only complaint I have is the bushings in the arms are hard to keep tight. The did squeak a little but some WD40 type lubricant fixed that. Another complaint, not the fault of the rower, is I have a big belly and it's hard to get all the way to the front to register a stroke. Like I said, not the machines fault.
Overall a great way to exercise, I would have given it a 5 except for the issues with the bushings!...more info
- a good product
this is a great rowing machine... not too pricey and a good working machine. A little stiff if you have the arm segments too high but a good machine overall....more info
- Rowing machine
I decided to order this rowing machine based on the reviews on this website. From what I read it seemed like a pretty sturdy, stable machine--the reviews were right! I was very happy with my purchase. The seat glides very smoothly and the machine is very quiet. I use it at least 3 times a week! Well worth the money if you have the space for it. ...more info
- Excellent Rower!
I first purchased this same rower over 20 years ago as therapy for a back and shoulder injury. It helped a great deal to aid in healing and regaining full strength on both sides of my body as each rowing arm is separately adjustable. After a year's use, I was probably in the best physical condition of my life. Unfortunately, I sold it when I felt I no longer needed it. I now have the need to exercise again (old age and not enough exercise) and was delighted to see this rower was still available. I received it quickly (love Amazon), it assembled in less than an hour and I am back to rowing. Great rower for the price!!!...more info
- I'm happy with this purchase
I purchased this rower about a week ago. The assembly wasn't too difficult. Make sure you have a socket wrench and another one or some vise grips handy.
This machine uses very little space. I have it in a corner near a tv. You will not be able to tuck this under a bed. It's not something that can be put away easily. However it's also built sturdy. It's not something that is easily going to fall apart.
If anything I could change on it would be the area for your feet. It's the least sturdy item on the entire rower. It is very quiet. I recommend this item....more info
- Stamina 1205 Precision Rower
Excellent product for the money. Gives you an all over body workout. Squeaks a little bit, but can be fixed with a little oil. Well worth the money....more info
- Get What you pay for?
Assembley was simple enough, visual diagrams could do a better job labeling parts.
- If your tall its a pain to get situated in.
- Resitance settings are terrible.
- After the first 100 sets the thing started sqeeking unbareably.
- Calorie meter is retarded, doesn't account resitance, just how many times the sliding seat passes a certain point....more info
- Works Great
This product is exactly what I thought it would be.
I purchased this product because I joined a corporate rowing league and wanted to start training at home.
It does NOT come pre-assembled.
Also, the knobs you use to change the resistance slip sometimes..but overall not bad for the price....more info
- The best cardo exercise
A very good buy. I been using it for about three months and I am very happy with it. I have the resistance set at half-way and don't forsee ever "max'n-out" the rower....more info
- It does workout
I'm 22 years old, I've tried many gym machines, but nothing like this one. The Machine is very good for starter like me. It works out everything like abdominals, tricepts, bycepts, thigh. that's all I can think of.
It's a moderate machine. The instruction manual isn't that bad, it will only take common sense and the instruction booklet. Altough, I had some problems figuring out what number bolt belongs to #37.
Great machine for a good price....more info
The absolute only complaint I have is one missing non-essential part. Outside of that I'm very happy with this purchase. This is my first Product from Stamina and I will definitely be buying their products when I'm in the market again....more info
