Alex hitch hitchens is a true urban myth - a legendary new york city date doctor who for a fee has helped hundreds of men woo the women of their dreams. The ultimate professional bachelor hitch discovers that all of his tried & true tricks of the trade are no match for sara the one woman he truly loves Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 10/03/2006 Starring: Will Smith Eva Mendes Run time: 120 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Andy Tennant
Will Smith's easygoing charm makes Hitch the kind of pleasant, uplifting romantic comedy that you could recommend to almost anyone--especially if there's romance in the air. As suave Manhattan dating consultant Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, Smith plays up the smoother, sophisticated side of his established screen persona as he mentors a pudgy accountant (Kevin James) on the lessons of love. The joke, of course, is that Hitch's own love life is a mess, and as he coaches James toward romance with a rich, powerful, and seemingly inaccessible beauty named Allegra (Amber Valetta), he's trying too hard to impress a savvy gossip columnist (Eva Mendes) with whom he's fallen in love. Through mistaken identities and mismatched couples, director Andy Tennant brings the same light touch that made Drew Barrymore's Ever After so effortlessly engaging. As romantic comedies go, Hitch doesn't offer any big surprises, but as a date movie it gets the job done with amiable ease and style. --Jeff Shannon
- Really cute!
This movie is about a man named Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, Will Smith, who helps men with the women thay have fallen for. He is called the "Date Doctor". His newest client Albert, Kevin James, a clumbsy lawyer is in love with a beautiful, rich, famous woman named Allegra. Smitch tries to teach Kevin to be smooth, romantic, etc. Kevin James is so funny, and he and Will Smith have excellent chemistry on screen together. Eva Mendes also does a great job as Will Smith's love interest. I love anything with Will Smith and this one didnt dissappoint me. I loved this movie!!!...more info
- Really enjoyed it
I really only saw 3 movies that were made in 2005 and all 3 were very good I thought. The others I watched were the 40 Year Old Virgin and also The Wedding Crashers. I liked this movie because Will Smith did a very good job against. He plays a dude who was once a huge looser and then becomes Mr. Hip and gives men tips on how to pick up women as relationships and not just sex.He goes to talk to a guy Kevin James who wants a women who is a smart heiress that is a tributary for the company that he works for. He is a really big dork and Will gets him hooked up. Meanwhile Will falls for a girl that is a newspaper worker. He is not Mr.Smooth he fails on a date with her at Ellis Island and also at a cookout. She finds out that he sets up men with women and thinks it is just about sex but it is not that at all.
So Will gets her back by being a huge moron instead of smooth....more info
- Super cute!
I'm not the type of gal that likes romantic comedies or "chick flicks". When I go to the movies, I like to spend my hard earned cash on a movie that will either mesmerize or scare the bejeezus out of me. So when this movie was first released in theaters, I reluctantly agreed to watch it with my chick flick-loving friends. And although it wasn't anything spectacular, I actually ended up enjoying it.
So what's this movie about? It surrounds the love life of a man named "Hitch" whose job is to help men with their love lives. James seeks Hitch's help when he falls for a woman named Allegra. The twist? Hitch is having problems with his own love life and although he seems like he knows a lot about women, the truth is he doesn't.
Let's talk about the positives first. First, I never was a big fan of Will Smith but he was great in this movie. Will along with Kevin James, Amber Valetta, and Eva Mendes were perfect for their roles. Second, I think the storyline is cute. Mr. Know-it-all really doesn't know it all. But it's not done in a cocky way. No, it's more silly than anything. Third, this movie is also rather funny. It's endearing to see men trying to win the girl in a not-so manly way. Overall, this movie is rather entertaining.
And now for the negatives. The reason for the 4 stars is because, just like most chick flicks, it's pure fun, nothing else. You won't be left with any thoughts or questions or strong emotions. This movie is certainly not Oscar-worthy but most movies in its genre aren't either.
If you're looking for a cute and funny movie to watch, I certainly recommend Hitch....more info
- GOOD movie, GOOD blu-ray quality.
I thought this movie was very funny. The story was interesting enough to keep me interested. I've always thought that Will Smith is a great actor. The blu-ray quality was good, not great.... but good. It had some grainy scenes and i wasn't too fond of the contrast levels.
oh well, bought it for 19.99 and i'm glad i did....more info

- Very Funny Romantic Comedy
It really has become noticable to professionals in the film industry and his legion of fans across the world, that Will Smith, since his role in "Six degrees of Separation", (1993) in the role of Paul, a brilliant performance, and Independence Day (1996) as Captain Steven Hiller, this energized and gifted actor cannot set a foot wrong. Smith's latest release in the adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel, "I am Legend", is absolutely extraordinary. However, "Hitch" (2005), reveals Smith's versatility as a comedic and dramatic actor. Hitch is a light a breezy romantic comedy about an anonymous "date doctor" who teaches nerds to get the women they desire. His tecniques work every time, until he meets a gossip jounalist, Sara Melas, (Eva Mendes) who presents a challenge for this charming "woman expert".
There are some very funny scenes in this film, including the dance scene, where Albert Brennerman (Kevin James) shows Hitch his knowledge of dances, all particulary lame and so funny, this had audiences falling off their seats with laughter.
My only criticism of this very funny film is I believe Eva Mendes' performance slightly strained as if she was trying just a little too hard, almost appearing to be over the top.
In terms of plot, this is a typical boy meets girl film with a joyful ending, but what makes it is Will Smith and Kevin James, a great and unexpected brilliant comedy team.
This movie was hilarious! Although I thought with Will Smith in it, it would have been a little better. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who wants to have a laugh!...more info
- How Could You NOT Like Hitch?
This movie was brilliant and funny. Kevin James as Albert Brennamen and Will Smith as Alex Hitchins, were great together. All the sequences are memorable - each has its moment. You will laugh, and there is a great story to be learned. I think this movie is underappreciated in many aspects. It's one of my favorites of all time. If you haven't you must! What are you waiting for?...more info
- Good At Times, But Just Okay
"Hitch" is a romantic comedy about Alex "Hitch" Hitchens [Will Smith], a "date doctor" that is trying to get hopeless romantic Albert [Kevin James] the woman of his dreams, Allegra Coles. But Hitch himself has fallen in love with Sara [Eva Mendes]! Oh no!
The movie is constantly switching between Hitch's relationship and Albert's relationship, which is a big disappointment. Why? Because all of Kevin James' scenes are great and funny, while Will Smith's scenes are very boring. Smith and James play their parts almost perfectly, but I guess James just got better lines.
I mean, take a look at the "Hitch" commercials they played in 2005. Almost all the scenes they played was from Kevin James. BECAUSE HE STEALS THE SHOW! When James is in the dancing scene, it's hilarious. When Smith is teaching James how to kiss, it's hilarious. But when Smith is throwing a salad or whatever at Eva Mandez, it's not...
The movie seems to drag on and on and on. It is about 2 hours long and about half of it is worthless crap that I didn't care about. Shoulda cut it down to an hour and a half and only had a half hour of Hitch's relationship!
For the laughs you do get, I woulda gave Hitch 4.5 out of 5 or something like that. But the boring parts just make it a little... well... boring! The only standout Will Smith scene is the "speed dating" scene, and that doesn't save the movie.

Pros: Kevin James, "speed dating" scene
Cons: just about everything else...more info
- Painfully funny romantic comedy
Will Smith plays a "Date Doctor" who specializes in creating an opportunity for men to meet women of their dreams, for the long-term relationship. Hitch played by Smith was once scourned as a college student and set up his current occupation. He is very successful until one day he meets someone that he is interested in for the longer-term relationship and his current client help him see that love is worth everything.
There are painful moments, there are hysterical moments, and in the end, it is a very good movie to watch and own. Enjoy....more info
- A Funny Romantic Comedy
Will Smith stars in this funny film about dating and falling in love. Smith stars as Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, the "Date Doctor". He helps men find dates. He has been rather successful at his work, as evidenced by the pictures of couples he helped get together hanging on his wall. Hitch may have finally met his greatest challenge in Albert Brennaman (Kevin James). Albert is a junior financial offecer who handles the account of heiress Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). Albert is desperate to have a relationship with Allegra, so he goes to Hitch for help.
Hitch is skeptical at first, but he decides to try to help him. This is the beginning of a friendship between Hitch and Albert. Soon, Albert is going to fancy art galleries and New York Knicks games with Allegra. Meanwhile, Hitch has found a woman that he likes. Her name is Sara Melas (Eva Mendes). She works as a newspaper gossip columnist. Hitch is immediately attracted to her, and the two begin dating. In the meantime, Sara has seen the photos of Allegra and Albert that have been appearing in the papers. Intrigued, Sara decides to do some investigationg of her own to find out why a socialite would be dating a junior accountant.
What she finds out doesn't bode well for Hitch. She finds out that he is indeed the infamous "Date Doctor". Feeling hurt and betrayed, she breaks up with Hitch. But is this really the end for them? What will happen with Sara and Hitch and Allegra and Albert?
This is one of the funniest movies I've seen in quite a while. Will Smith was the perfect choice for the role of Hitch. His funny disposition really makes the character shine. Kevin James does an equally outstanding job as the bumbling but lovable Albert. You can't help but root for him to get the seemingly unattainable "trophy girl". Eva Mendes and Amber Valletta are also very good as Sara and Allegra.
I recommend this movie very highly. I'm a fan of Will Smith's music and movies, and he delivers perhaps his finest performance in this movie. This is the perfect "date" movie, so if you're looking for something fun to do on date night, put this movie in, relax, and see a really great romantic comedy. ...more info

- You'll Fall in Love with This Movie
Alex Hitchens, "Hitch" to his friends (Will Smith), has a wonderful job. He helps men get the women of their dreams by giving them dating tips and arranging situations where they can meet their current crushes. Dubbed the "Date Doctor," Hitch operates by word of mouth.
His latest client is Albert Brennaman (Kevin James), a nerdy accountant who is deeply in love with socialite Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). Even though Albert is way out of Allegra's league, Hitch begins to work his magic.
Meanwhile, Hitch has met society columnist Sara Melas (Eva Mendes) and is doing his best to win her. Sara is a tough cookie to crack, however, because her job reporting the break ups of others has made her extremely cynical. Sara's pursuit of Allegra and Albert only makes things worse. Will anyone find true love?
I'm sure if I describe this romantic comedy as predictable, it won't come as any surprise to you. I had the ultimate ending figured out long before the story really got going. However, I was left wondering how exactly they'd reach that outcome.
Even more importantly, the journey along the way was fun. While I didn't laugh as much as my friends, I was often smiling when I wasn't cringing. I'm not a fan of comedy from embarrassment, and that's some of the humor here. However, watching Hitch in action is fun. He is so smooth it is remarkable.
Finally, the characters made me care about the outcome. Sara was the only one it was hard to warm up to, and by the end I cared for her, too. The acting was great, which really helped.
This is one of those rare romantic comedies that everyone seems to enjoy. So if you are looking for a light film, give this one a chance....more info
- Will Smith has found his element...
I know this won't get me a lot of "helpful" votes, but I have to say it. I am not a big Will Smith fan. I don't like Science Fiction. Hated "Prince of Bel Aire." Thought Men in Black was slack! But I LOVE THIS MOVIE! It really is fantastic!
I have to say first of all, major kudos to the Music arranger and music writers. I really loved the soundtrack selection, as well as the original sound recordings for this movie. From the first hit song, playing during the opening arrangement, Hitche's intro, to the final notes, every song is dead on, and perfect.
Michael Rappaport. Can somebody explain to me why this guy isn't a bigger star getting bigger roles? Is he somebody's buddy? He plays every part he's in perfectly, and I wish we could see more of him. He's in one short bar scene playing pool with Will Smith's character, as we get to know who Hitch really is.
I also like Eva Mendes, and the other smaller roles throughout. And of couse, Kevin James steals every scene he is in. He really is a great physical comedian. Every scene he is in made me scream with laugher. I'm exaggerating a bit, but you know what I mean.
I originally watched this on the UMD on my PSP, but I also rented it on DVD, and enjoyed the extras very much. Commentary is great, and enjoyable. I liked learning about the decisions about soundtrack, especially since I enjoyed it so much.
Great twin storylines between Hitch and the Kevin James character. I liked the dance scene at the end, at their wedding. I really liked this movie!...more info
- so-so comedy
In "Hitch," Will Smith plays a modern-day Henry Higgins, who, for a tidy fee, will teach lessons of love to a bunch of lovelorn Eliza Doolittles - only, in this case, the Elizas are grown men who desperately need instruction on how to win the hearts and affections of the women of their dreams. Of course, the irony is that Hitch doesn't adhere to his own formula, being a confirmed bachelor with no interest in entering into a serious relationship with anyone himself. Until, that is, he meets the woman of his own dreams, Sara, a New York City gossip columnist who has no idea what it is Hitch does for a living.
It occurs to me that, when it comes to certain movie genres - action movies and romantic comedies in particular - it would be helpful if we could inflict some kind of temporary amnesia on ourselves so that we could at least think we were watching something new and fresh and not something we've already seen a hundred times before. Even the best romantic comedies can't entirely avoid paying homage to "the formula," and "Hitch" is clearly no exception. As such, the film has some mildly amusing moments, some endearingly sweet scenes, and some cute little plot complications amidst all the sentimental clich¨¦s, lowbrow slapstick and tired stereotypes we generally find in these films. (I mean, do we really need yet another romantic comedy in which one of the heroine's co-worker sidekicks is a light-in-the-loafers, preposterously effeminate gay man?). It seems like every time "Hitch" is about to win us over, it short circuits itself and loses us by going for the obvious.
Smith makes for a smooth romantic lead, but Eva Mendes doesn't always seem up to the challenge of her role, particularly when she is called upon to convey dramatic intensity. Actually, of the performers, it is Kevin James ("King of Queens"), as an overweight klutz who has hired Hitch's services to help him woo a beautiful blond heiress, who walks off with the film. Even though he's only a supporting player, it doesn't take him long to assume center stage in the film, essentially relegating the leads to second banana status.
- Pleasant Different Romantic Comedy
I really enjoyed Hitch. Smith continues to prove that her really is a big screen actor. He is charming, relaxed and easygoing in that real-person kind of way. The best thing about this is that it doesn't rely on a lot of over-the-top romantic contrivances: playing two characters, constantly missing each other, getting too ditzy and silly : all big pluses. The Kevin James plotline has the silliest bits, but even they are not over the top. There is a genuinely sweet sincerity in this film, that really makes it work. Eva Mendes is lovely and more serious than most of the girls chased in these films, Amber Valleta proves that she can actually deliver dialogue without being laughed at and James is the comically sweet loser/everyman. Actually very well done. One kind of comic nod to the old romatic comedies is a remote control Smith has in his apartment ala Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk - but it is quick and not an extended silly joke. Definitely worth your time....more info
- Nicely done romantic comedy
Alex "Hitch" Hitchens (Will Smith) is the "date doctor" who helps men get to first base with the woman of their dreams. He isn't a sleaze who teaches them to lie and con their way forward, he helps build their confidence and form a plan so they don't look like fools. His latest challenge is Albert (Kevin James), a portly tax accountant who lusts after a glamorous heiress. While Hitch is coaching Albert in the toughest assignment of his career, he also pursues a reporter for a New York tabloid. As one might expect in a romantic comedy, misunderstandings ensue and both Hitch and Albert will have to struggle if they want to capture true love.
Will Smith is one of the most likeable personas around and he exudes his usual easy charm here. The ethics of his profession had the potential to get dicey, but it's made very clear that he doesn't help guys score, he helps men looking for love. Just as most shrinks seem to be emotionally damaged, so too the love doctor is suffering the long-term effects of a broken heart. Hitch is charming and witty with a woman but letting her inside is a bit too scary. Albert is the opposite, of course. A big teddy bear who would declare his love for the heiress before she knew his name (with disastrous results) if he didn't have Hitch to advise him. The training sessions with the two of them are probably the most enjoyable of the whole movie and certainly enjoyable.
If there was a downside to the movie, it was the character of Sara, Hitch's love interest. She is so judgmental and shrill that I found myself wishing that Hitch would find someone a lot more pleasant to pursue. Alas, the poor man was smitten and so can look forward to continued verbal maulings for quite some time.
This is an easy movie to watch and an easy movie to like. Hitch is funny, entertaining, and has a good-hearted feel. Will Smith is as good as expected, but Kevin James plays a critical role in providing warmth and vulnerability in a movie that could otherwise have come off as slick and cynical....more info
- This one is a catch
My wife picked this movie and I reluctantly watched it. I couldn't decide whether or not to write a review for this DVD. I was on the fence, but in the end I decided that it did merit a couple of comments. I wouldn't consider myself a Will Smith fan by any means, so truth be told my expectations were pretty low to begin with. Will Smith won me over. I was pleasantly surprised. Set in New York, I would discribe the movie as fun, sweet, cute and innocent. - polished but not glossy. Although the movie is very "safe" and doesn't tackle any hard truths, it will remind you of how awkward dating was or is for everyone. The movie floats along and contains nothing heavy, nothing to learn, and no special message - it's pure fluff and yes - with a very predictable conclusion. Watch it with someone you love for the feelings it will invoke in you. The movie will leave you with a smile on your face and joy in your heart.
I can't quiet put my finger on exactly why I liked it - but I liked it enough to buy it and didn't feel like I wasted my time or money after it was over....more info
- Disappointing Transfer to HD, but Better than DVD
The movie is good. This review is about the transfer to HD.
Sometimes the picture looks great and are obviously HD, but other times it's just plain ugly and DVD quality or less.
This is very obvious (i'm not a videophile, just an ordinary guy with money to blow on blu-ray) because the quality changes many times during a single scene, changing based on the camera angle.
So you end up with a shot of will smith that looks awesome, and then suddenly there's a shot of someone else that looks terrible, then it's back to will smith and looking good, then the camera changes back to the horrible looking image.
It's still better than the DVD, but it's not what it could or should be.
It's a shame that the movie is not up to par because the early adopters of this technology are the least price sensitive, but the most likely to notice poor quality.
Go ahead and charge a fortune for the movies, but at least make them the best possible. Sadly, the high price combined with the poor HD transfer make the offerings unattractive to both the early adopters as well as more general consumers.
There's a decent chance a Sony exec of some kind will read this, and if so, I hope you have the cajones to do what it takes to make your media platform a success. You will ultimately fail if you can't deliver on the promise....more info
- It's fine
Will Smith is a date doctor, who helps desperate men woo the women of their dreams to get them to fall in love with them. He helps his latest client, an accountant, make the women of his dreams fall in love with him. However while he is helping him, Will Smith gets in touch with a journalist and fall for her, but his techniques do not work on her. Eventually in the movie, he realizes that the best way to get women to like you is to simply be yourself.
Whats nice and new about this movie is all the practical tips given on how to impress a women. Things that you might not have ever thought about before and after this movie you realize, oh that makes sense.
The movie is fine, with few funny scenes. Not hilarious enough though!

- Tasteful laughs for guys and girls
If you need a good laugh at the end of a hard week, this is the film for you! Hitch is a remarkable combination of humor and sensitivity, enjoyable for both men and women. I have never seen my husband laugh harder than in this movie!
Alex Hitchins is a private, secretive consultant who helps timid or awkward men find the courage and grace to meet and court the women they've been longing to know. Hitch is challenged when an accountant hires him in order to get to know a millionaire celebrity. But it turns out that Hitch's biggest challenge is letting down his own barriers when he himself falls in love.
There are many moments of male/female humor in Hitch, poking fun at the different ways we communicate and understand. There is also good old slapstick and laughing at our own human foibles and weaknesses. Thankfully the humor is clean, even though the movie has its share of sexual innuendo and God's name misused. If you're sensitive about innuendo and language, this movie might bother you a bit. But I was really impressed by the emphasis on honorable, respectful behavior in Hitch.
For example, the mission of Alex Hitchins is expressly not sexual. When one potential client admits that he just wants to "bang" the girl he likes, Hitch goes through the roof. His job is to help people have the time to talk and listen to each other, growing in passion because of common interests. He has no sympathy for sleazy men who only want their own "needs" met. He refuses to work with this customer.
Also there are moments when Alex himself could have compromised his ideals for his own gratification, but instead pursued friendship. Throughout the story, he is shown to be mature and concerned about who women really are.
Hitch is not just a fairy tale movie. Hitch discovers the difficulty that past betrayal causes in present relationships. He is confronted with the choice between loving and risking, and staying "safe" but never loving. Friends of his are willing to speak candidly with him, challenging his assumptions about love and life.
I highly recommend this movie as one of my top romantic comedies, finding the innuendoes and language the only major drawbacks.
- Bargain bin movie
Yes, that is what I called this movie - 'A Bargain Bin movie'. In fact, at most stores, the bargain bin is exactly where you will find this movie. And it sells cheap both here and in the stores I previously mentioned.
So, at this point, you are wondering - why did this idiot give the movie 4 stars?
The 'Bargain Bin movie', for a change, is a good thing. You can get this movie (in widescreen I recommend) for around $10.00. A good deal for a good movie. As a guy who likes 'guy movies', it takes a lot for me to say this. 'Hitch' is a chick flick that I enjoyed. It takes a lot for me to watch a chick flick much less come away enjoying it. Hitch is funny. It wanders a bit in the story, but it does not take away from it (and just when you thought Will Smith's ears could not get any bigger - food allergies!).
So, buy this movie cheap and enjoy it. It is not the greatest movie, but it is definitely funny, 'cute' and a good 'chick flick'.
- Totally enjoyed it.

- I'm glad I didn't pay to see this movie.
A couple of redeeming things about this movie. First, Kevin James. His performance stole the show, and his budding relationship was much more interesting than the jaded exchanges between Hitch and Sara (quite tiresome). Will Smith is his naturally charming self, which he plays in every movie I've ever seen him in (exception for Ali). The writers of the movie did come up with some clever dialogue / dating tips for those of us who are single.
And now the bad. The movie was enjoyable up until about a third of the way through. Sara's friend is seduced in to a one-night-stand by a real creep. As Sara's friend cries about "being used" and manipulated by the creep, Sara becomes determined to expose the "Love Doctor" that she mistakenly thinks set up the circumstances/date. The problems here are many. First, why exactly is Sara's friend crying? What are you crying over? You went out on one date with someone and had sex, what do you have emotionally invested here? Second, Sara, instead of pointing out to her friend that she is suffering the consequences of fornicating with a known adulterer, blames the "Love Doctor" (Hitch). So we're supposed to believe that Sara's friend wasn't in control of her body and completely at the mercy of a trained acolyte of the "Love Doctor"? And so Sara must expose this predatory "Love Doctor" and his evil minions. So much for personal responsibility. Great Hollywood victimization logic here. Third, Sara upon finding out that the "Love Doctor" was her new boy-friend could have just confronted him with her friend's problem instead of destroying his livlihood and Kevin James' budding romance in one self-righteous swoop. And lastly, how could Hitch (or any self-respecting man) want to make up with this self-righteous vindictive b*&*h?
Fortunately, I got to watch this movie recently at a friend's house. ...more info

I have been away for a while because we were without electricity for 10 days! We needed to go to my aunt and uncle's house in Paducah to keep warm and we decided to watch this move. Anyway...

p.s. My aunt and uncle are awesome!!!
- PERFECT DATE MOVIE
Hitch is the best romantic comedy yet! I am a HUGE fan of Will Smith. He is great in action movies and even better in a romantic role. Will Smith and Eva Mendes were smokin' hot in this movie and had great chemistry. The movie has so many real life examples that everyone can relate to in previous or current relationships, you can really understand the characters and how they're feeling.
Will Smith is the "Love Doctor" who helps every other man find the woman of their dreams or just the biggest babes ever, yet he doesn't believe there is anyone out there for him...kind of hypocritical...until he meets Eva Mendes. Eva Mendes is a hard headed, successful, and independent woman who hasn't experienced love in a long time. Most of the movie they fall head over heels for eachother; while behind the scenes Eva Mendes is a columnist researching the "Love Doctor." There were many ups and downs to the movie but SO many laughs.
This movie is a must see with your significant other. Even men will get a kick out of this romantic comedy. ...more info
