  • So far, so good
I've had this tank for about a month now and it's great! I started my Betta in a 1gallon tank and decided to upgrade to a 5gallon. This tank sits on my desk at work and it is very low maintenance. My fish loves to swim around and explore all around. Hopefully the filter motor won't die on me like some of the other reviews I've read. But so far, I love it!...more info
  • Nice Looking-Until Pump Quits-BEWARE!
This is a small, pretty aquarium, just right for a counter top or kids room. Worked great for about 1 year, then, as with MANY other users, the pump started going out. You will begin to notice cloudy water, and upon pump inspection, the water flow isnt strong enough to turn the biowheel, or no flow at all. I believe it has something to do with a constant water level, if the water level drops it burns out the motor, but the aquarium is so small, evaporation occurs quickly. A constant monitoring of the water level is a must. I was able to get the pump working again by banging on it (heehee) but how long that will last, I dont know. Already lost one fish, and apparently finding another pump is dang near impossible. Not to mention that the size and shape of this aquarium makes buying a regular pump impossible for this tank. Marineland probably knows all about it, as many people on here have tried to contact them about this issue. If I can find a link to a vendor of a pump, I will post it.

Save your money, buy an aquarium with a better pump. ...more info
  • Pretty is as pretty does
Like other people who have reviewed this item, I liked the way the tank looked and the price seemed reasonable. However, the first time I cleaned the tank I started having problems with the pump not working properly. I've been struggling to keep this pump running for the short 8 months I've owned the tank and I'm fed up with the hassle. This tank isn't a good deal, or even reasonably priced, if you have to replace it in less than a year. Pretty is as pretty does and I'm finding this tank less and less attractive. I wish I had read the reviews on this tank before I purchased it from a local retailer....more info
  • Beautiful tank for a desk
I bought this tank for my office. I have one of the larger Eclipse 3 integrated tank lids for a 30 gal at home. I've had no trouble at all with either set up as far as the filter and light kit. The filter works great, and with just the right amount of current created. My Betta can always find a still place to rest and my neons sit in the light current created by the completely silent filter pump. I clean the sides with an old toothbrush, and the little door in the lid is great for feeding. The light is bright enough to grow low-light plants, and I have one in mine that is doing great. I love this tank, and get many compliments from coworkers about how clean and modern the design is. Because it is a hex tank, people can sit behind my desk or in front of it and get a great view of it. Marineland rocks!...more info
  • What good is something that keeps breaking?
Perhaps I simply have bad luck. When I bought this tank, I loved it. I put it in my boy's room and it was nice and quiet and easy..... until it broke. I took it back to the petco I bought it at, they gave me a new pump....which also did not work.
I have the manual and I'm putting this thing together right, but it's not working! In the meantime, some of the fish died, and my son is pretty sad about it all.
Next time I'm going for one of the old fashioned loud filters that at least last you a couple of years....more info
  • This is the worst aquarium
I bought this item less than 6 months ago, and have gone through two motors for the filter. Every time I try to contact the company, they do not respond back. I am giving it to the trash gods!! DO NOT BUY this item if you dont want to have to replace the motor every 3 months. I am very disappointed in this tank. I didnt even want to give it one star but I had to to leave my review.

  • Pump quit after 4 years-so not that bad
I've had this tank for about 4 years or so and have not had many problems with it. I bought it to put baby guppies in when they were born in my 30 gallon. This worked out pretty good. I added a very small heater-caution if you do this-you will need to add the heater when there are no fish in the tank and let it filter for a good few days before adding fish. I believe what happens is because the tank is made of acrylic, and once a heater is added and warms the water, it leaches toxins which will kill any fish. I have had this happen. Anyway, i've had minor problems- replaced the light bulb a few times, plastic cover inside broke, and pump finally went out today. I don't thinks that's so bad after 4 years. It looks like I found a website for the replacement, although it's just the pump and not the impeller, intake tube or bio wheel. Here's a link to the website. http://store.petside.com/product/power-filter-parts/10008/marineland-pump-filtration-assembly-eclipse-system-3,-hex-5,-hex-7,-corner-5,-explorer-aquariums.html

  • Pump failures info
I have read the reviews about pump failures and what I have found is that if the power goes out for any length of time, the pump does not come back on. It is NOT necessesarily broken, however. It has happen to me 3 times with power outages and what I have done is to unplug the filter for about 15 minutes and drain the water from it, (you can also clean the impeller while you wait), then plug it in and it comes right back on. I have had the system for about 7 months and other than water changes every 2 weeks, along with gravel vaccuming at the same time, it has worked like a champ. I currently have 5 fish doing well in it......more info

  • Had this tank 5 years. kept going even with my neglect.
I had this tank 5 years and just recently decided to shut it down, mainly because I don't have time for the upkeep and hate feeling guilty about it. Also because I never was able to keep more than 3 fish alive for any length of time. For the last two years I had two in the tank. Ultimately one of them outgrew the other enough to bully it to death. I did end up giving the bully away but it was too late to save the fish that remained. I never had problems with the motor, though it definitely needs water levels maintained to work effectively. The light does heat up the water and I found even when I left the light out, the water temp was usually at the upper end of the safe zone. Never had any success with goldfish. I don't recall any cloudy water problems. I also didn't stick with the pre-made filters, but made my own - for economy and to cut down on waste....more info
