  • Excellent Router but Hard to Setup
If this is your first router, I can't recommend it. The CD-ROM was useless and I had to download the newest install software off the internet first. Adjust the settings wirelessly and it's easier. This replaces a dying D-Link router. My signal strength is 80%-100% in most my 1500 sq ft house. That's compared to the 50% or lower signal I had with D-link. MAC filters work well and the software is very configurable. Switch it to a channel that no one used like#11 and you'll get a better signal. No dropouts. My computer to computer network seems faster too. If this is your 2nd or 3rd router and you are used to setting them up, I'd highly recommend it....more info
  • Setup is not difficult??
I don't get how you guys can say setup was difficult. I just popped the setup CD into my computer and it explained EVERYTHING in great detail. My PC and CD did all the work for me, it required absolutely no knowledge from me about home networking. I was about to buy a Netgear WGR614 router but I'm very glad I purchased this, for only a couple more dollars where I got it. I get fast and good internet coverage on my PSP (wireless device) and my Xbox 360 (LIVE works flawlessly on this router and is approved by microsoft) and PC connect wired to the router, which also perform seamlessly. I recommend this router to anyone looking for a simple and affordable solution to set up a home network....more info
  • great router
I haven't had any problems with this router. It does what it is supposed to and the support that comes with it is great. Easy breeezy to install as well....more info
  • Such Trash
Linksys is a respected company and I have used their products before but I dont know why and how they managed to come up with such a aweful product.
I purchased one 4 months back. It kept on going dead and I had to restart it almost every 30 min. I called amazon and got it replaced.
The new one also didn't work that good. And finally one day it went dead and I pressed the reset button located at the back.
After that it has never worked. I am going to call Amazon to see if they can refund me some money or otherwise I am trashing.
I have made a vow never to use linksys products again. ...more info
  • A good high-bandwidth router
My Belkin router began performing poorly during high-bandwidth times (ie. downloads, gaming, tivo, etc). I spoke with several people about an inexpensive replacement since I work in the IT field. Almost everyone of them said Linksys. With such a strong lean toward Linksys, I decided on buying one and went with the SpeedBoost version, since I do a lot of in-home networking as well.

It is a great router and I would recommend it for most. Here are my pros and cons:

    Pros:
    - Fair price
    - Linksys = Cisco
    - Many configurable options (including parental controls)
    - Its fast and can handle tons of bandwidth

    Cons:
    - Initial setup was WAY more complicated than it should be
    - Should have come with directions for intermediate/advanced users
    - Using their setup software was an awful experience
    - Does not wall mount

All in all I am pleased with my choice....more info
  • Forget Using The Easy Link Installation CD
I spent an hour trying to get my Dell Laptop connected to the Linksys WRT54GS router, using the installation CD, and another unsuccessful hour on the phone with customer service, only to be cut off. I then went online, with my laptop wired to the router, to [..], then to the easy link, and within minutes was magically connected. IT WAS GREAT!!! My Dell D610 laptop works super fast using this router, with no glitches, or disconnects. I like it. ...more info
  • Bought for Roku Player
I bought this wireless router so that I could use the Netflix Roku machine. It works great. I would recommend calling the help line when you install it. They have automated instructions to help you set it up which was better than the software it came with. Also, for some reason in the EasyLink Advisor it says that there is no internet connected but it is so I just ignore that message. ...more info
  • Awesome
This router works great! Very easy to set up. My home network was online in about 10 minutes. Highly recommended....more info
  • Linksys with speedbooster
The router was very easy to set up and our wireless network was up and running in less than 15 minutes. The Macs we had recognized the network immediately. The XP computers took a little coaxing but eventually we were able to sign on 4 computers....more info
  • Great wireless router for every skill level!
Pros: Simple, short and sweet! Setup out of the box was a breeze, I did follow the cd's instruction's and there were absolutely no hangups or problems! I added my server, 2 desktops and 3 laptops that float around. No matter where the laptops are at they always get good reception. I have a jump drive ready for my friends when they come over and want to surf the net, all they have to do is run the stub on my jumpdrive and ta-da they are on! I am pleased!

Cons: I cannot delete people off of my network once they get on there, sure I allow them to get on there but I want to delete some off of my overpopulated network. Also, there aren't any mounts on the physical product so that I can easily mount it on the wall behind my monitor, but that is just getting picky!

I received this device sooner than expected. It was very easy to install and it does everything it said it would. we are very happy with this product....more info
  • It doesn't even deserve 1 star
setup is very easy. The problem was it wouldn't stay connected to the internet. It drops the internet all the time. Called linksys customer service (twice) they were sooo helpful. they told me either our lines were the problems or I was the problem. So I ended up calling our internet company and they were nice enough to come and set it up..oh and by the way the same way I did it. They couldn't even figure out why it was dropping the internet connection, so they checked their lines they were working just fine. So here I am stuck with an overprice box thats only use is to set there and collect dust. ThaNKS LINKSYS...more info

  • Good Range!
This device was a snap to setup, and has very good range. This is a must buy!...more info
  • The router is fine. The software is awful.
As I have read in other customer reviews, be prepared to call customer support if you use the Linksys software to install the router. Other info: the PC that is hard-wired to my home network is running Windows XP....more info
  • Easy to set up, good connection, speedbooster does not make a difference.
This router is easy to set up with the included CD. The set up is very simple and takes only a few minutes. I did not experience any additional boost in speed with the speed booster, it works just the same as my older G band router.

I prefer this router to the new Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Routeras it gives me a better signal in my 2-storey house. The WRT54G2 gave me a much weaker signal in the some spots than this one. During set up the CD also installs a Connection Advisor software on your computer that diagnoses and refreshes your connection in case you experience problems. It has come in handy a couple of times to connect to the internet especially as I use my laptop in multiple wireless locations and some times the settings can go awry.

I got this router at a sub 40 dollar price at a big box electronics retailer. It's a bit more expensive on Amazon....more info
  • Great! If you're a masochist!
Have had two of them. Why I put myself through the pain and suffering with a second one, I'll never know. I'll be buying a D-link next week to replace piece 'o trash #2. Sure, shelf life is meh, but at least I'll get a year or two without the headaches Linksys has given me.

Pro Tip: Avoid this like product like the plague....more info
  • LINKSYS WRT54GS ISSUES
As usual, delivery was timely and the deal went smoothly. As for the router, this was my first experience with wireless networking and I feel very strongly that the setup directions need more detail. Eventually it was up and running but then I discovered that the swithching power supply for the router also emits a noisy RF signal. I would not have discoered this except that I am an amateur radio operator and found the signal able to be heard on one of the VHF ham bands. This is something that LINKSYS could easily remedy, however, I have contacted them and heard nothing in response after two weeks. I ran CAT5e from the second floor to the basement and was done with it. Larry...more info

this router is really user friendly to set up, it has a wizard that guides you through the entire configuration process. I like it pretty much...more info
  • Tech Support Issues/BUY A BETTER CAT5 CORD!!!! {Long Review]
This maybe an Issue that Costumers might have! THIS WAS MY EXPERIENCE!! I bought this model at my local Walmart for $40. Install, easy enough. Two months after purchase, The ROUTER just suddenly had no connection to the internet on my computer! I did the cd install, to no avail. I then called Tech Support. They were nice, had great communication and were knowledgeable. Except after 3hrs, 4 different Tech Support Levels, no luck with any connection/ configuration, settings, you name it!! Then, they CLAIM the device was defective and gave me REPLACEMENT request/claim number. I called the Customer Support, and they were also professional but to receive a replacement I must pay for the Shipping Cost or Charge my Credit Card of the original price until they RECEIVE the DEFECTIVE WRT54GS. So, I said no. And then went to LINKSYS website. Looked under the SUPPORT, START HERE- type WRT54GS COMMUNITY/Top FORMS, then "Connects, but no connection using router" then I found this:

    I FINALLY FOUND A SOLUTION!!!
I have had continual problems much like all of you, and spent countless hours on the phone with Linksys...doing all of the things they are telling all of you. I even went out a bought a new router, only to continue having problems.
I finally followed the advice of WAMason which is message #12 that recommended getting a new CAT 5 cable. Here is what he said and found......................

I've been having the same problem that most of you are experiencing
here. Has anyone replaced the CAT5 cable between the router and the modem? I have a similar setup to sinnerforgivn (same router, same modem, different provider). When I first set things up all was kosher. Connection worked fine and I didn't have any troubles. Over the past few weeks though it seemed I'd lose connection to the Internet. The only recourse was to reset the modem and router. Every thing would be shibby.... for about 15 minutes. After some "high" traffic, my connection would die and I'd have to reset it all again. I did the whole rigamaro of upgrading the firmware on the router and on the modem but still the same problem.

At first I sniffed my external connection because I thought somone was DOSing me. Alas, no incoming traffic. I was about to head out to the local Walmart (it was 2AM at the time, what else is open?) to pick up a new router when I decided to check the cable. I replaced the CAT5 I was using between the router and the modem (I was using the one that came with the modem) with a "known good" cable. Viola! My problems seem to have vanished.

SO I too bought a new cable and AMAZINGLY!!!! Everything is working! YEA! I think the cable they provide is less then quality!!!

    Kudos! Thanks!

I found the CORRUPT posted by this COSTUMER, reminding not the TECH SUPPORT. It is what I believe to be a FAULTY/DEFECT in the provided Ethernet Cord. So, I replace the Linksys Cord with a "SPARE" one I had. And WALLAH I had Internet Connection!!!! Still, I called TECH SUPPORT to INSTALL a Secure NETWORK SETTING because it was an UNSECURED NETWORK!! I told the TECH that I found the SOLUTION. He SOUNDED as if he had NO Idea that my FINDING could be the CAUSE/ISSUE but the TECH was Professional and STEP by STEP we Configured the SETTINGS.

Then at FIRST, I wanted a REPLACEMENT Ethernet Cord if in deed as THE TECH SUPERVISOR APPROVED an replacement, I thought it would be COVERED! I RECEIVED a NEW CASE # starts the same 090221-00X- XXX. Called the CONSUMER SALES DEPT at 1-800-546-5797. A Representative named Ruth at the time I did not write down her ID# but it was 5 digits. STATED "ONLY THE ENTIRE UNIT IS COVERED" not individual parts.??? SO, the CORD is NOT Covered as in their "LIMITED WARRANTY" I was say at least DISAPPOINTED in the COMPANY'S POLICY (Linksys) AND I FRIED HER like a "BURNT STAKE" until she TRANSFER me to Jenny ID# 11343. NOW, I was a HOT FIRER CRACKER with her also because again I SPENT total 4 hours including the SECURE NETWORK SETTINGS because I was TOLD NOT to RE-INSTALL USING THE DISK??!! I SPIN HER LIKE A WASHER MACHINE GONE WILD!!! JUST TRYING TO GET AN ANSWER TO WHY THE TECH SUPPORT NEVER ONCE CLUE/HIND or EVEN TOLD ME that IT COULD be the ETHERNET CORD!!! AND THE ONLY THING SHE SAID SHE COULD DO FOR ME WAS "FILE" "INVESTIGATE" "REPORT" "PASS THE ISSUE TO HER SUPERVISOR/DEPART HEAD". AFTER THINKING A BIT AND A LITTLE ROUGH TALK, I FOUND OUT that a CONSUMER/ SMARTER THAN "Tech's" and ME!!

    { JENNY TOLD ME THAT "The TECH SPEC I TALK TOO WERE as she said in so many words DUMB and I was SMART enough to figure this out on my own!!! HAHA and THREE EMPLOYEES SAID TO ME IT"S ONLY a $2 CABLE but GOOGLE IT about $5 SO WHY SHOULD I BE OUT $5 FOR THEIR CHEAP QUALITY CABLE?? }

    THAT hermanzke FIGURED IT OUT (this and many others have complained about on this posting) THE ISSUE, again in my very limited research!!!! IT HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS!!! Something FISHY is going on here!!! Then it dawned on me to ask Jenny "HAS ANYONE ELSE CALLED AND ISSUE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE" same/similar as mine? at first she DENIED it!! BUT I RAN HER LIKE Maurice Greene!! Until she SLIPPED UP and said she "herself" had "many" ETHERNET CORD COMPLAINTS!!! BUT ?NEVER REFUND/REPLACE the CORD? Hmmmm. THEN THE TABLES TURNED/THE WORLD I ONLY SAW in the movie "THE RAINMAKER" CAME CRASHING DOWN ON ME "IS THE COMPANY FAILING TO INFORM THE CONSUMERS OF THIS "VERY SIMPLE, VERY COST EFFECTIVE METHOD of Replacing ""their/the warehouse they received mine at least ??" FAULTY CORD???? So, I gave COSTUMER SUPPORT their Unmarked "NETWORK CABLE" Serial Number to INFORM the Company "at least mine" is/went BAD!!! {3522-08000001R}

MY MIND FRAME CHANGED FROM JUST GETTING A REPLACEMENT TO "ADVOCACY" for those/CONSUMER who "RETURNED" and paid to SHIP a "DEFECTIVE ROUTER!! BACK, which includes all parts" COULD THIS BE A SHAME< CONSPIRACY > TO SAVE ON RECALL OR PROFIT???

ALSO I KEPT the BOX, CD, PAPERS and RECEIPT WHICH IS A MUST!!!

I WAS A HOT POTATO, BUT AS IN THE MOVIE "MAYBE SHE SIGNED A CONTRACT?SOMETHING that KEPT HER/SUPPORT/CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM REVELING THIS SIMPLE FIX!!! I DRILLED her like HUNTING FOR OIL!!! UNTIL, SHE SAID "I, MIGHT GET FIRED OVER THIS" {I"M THINKING WHY?} I FOUND OUT THIS REPRESENTATIVE IS OVERSEAS SO I THOUGHT THERE MIGHT BE "DIFFERENT LAWS GOVERNING HER RESPONSES AND SUCH. SO SHE I AM ASSUMING TO REALIZED HER ERROR AND TRANSFER ME TO HER SUPERVISOR. SHE CALLED HERSELF "L" ID# 29350. WHICH MOST LIKELY WILL CHANGE!!! NOW, I"M THINKING ARE THEY SWEEPING THIS ISSUE UNDER A DIRTY RUG??? AND THE CORP. IS MAKING/TELLING THE SUPPORT NOT TO REVEAL THIS AND I FELT LIKE I'm A BUG UNDER THE COMPANY'S GIANT BOOT.

"L" TALKED/VAGUELY OR MOSTLY "SIR, I DON"T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU"RE SAYING?" ONLY THING SHE WOULD/COULD DO WAS "SEND AND INVESTIGATION??!!!"" I ASK HER WHAT DOES THAT INVOLVED> SHE SAID LITTLE TO NOTHING about the PROCESS> ONLY THAT SHE WOULD CALL ME BACK IF/WHEN SHE FOUND OUT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT "MY" ISSUE and only gave me an email rma@linksys which i know will have no effect so why bother! L GAVE NO OTHER PHONE NUMBERS OR NAMES NOTHING THAT I COULD "INVESTIGATE" FURTHER!!! ALSO, I ASK THE SAME QUESTIONS BUT SHE WAS SMART AND KEPT TO HER GUNNS WHATEVER ROUNDS THEY HOLD!!??

WELL THIS IS GETTING TOO LONG> THEIR IS A LOT MORE THAT HAPPENED BUT by 7 HOURS MY MEMORY IS WEAK AND MAY NOT BE AS ACCURATE SINCE IT HAS BEEN 6 Hours LATER.

SUMMERY! I STILL LOVE THE PRODUCT "IF IT CONTINUES TO WORK" I HAVE NO ILL WILL TOWARDS THE EMPLOYEES. THEY ARE JUST DOING THEIR JOB EVEN IF IT MAYBE BORDERLINE UN_ETHICAL BUT ARE PROFESSIONAL AND VERY VERY CONCERTED WITH PUTTING UP WITH MY RANTS!!? THE COMPANY Linksys needs to do more "SPREAD THE BUTTER/ KNOWLEDGE TO THEIR DEPARTMENTS!!! I DON"T WANT CONSUMERS BEING TAKING ADVANTAGE OF BECAUSE OF CORPORATIONS LOOP HOLES!!!

    3 STARS IS FAIR!

  • Solid router - but setup could use some easier configuration access
Overall - a solid router - with great signal-strength and relatively easy setup. My only beef was related to needing to get into the configuration to tweak some of the security settings. Linksys seems to assume that the average user shouldn't even know what the security settings are - let alone change them - so doesn't make them accessible in their pre-packaged utility for managing the network. You have to access the router directly - which was made more difficult by the fact that they provide the wrong default IP address to access the router in the documentation ("Oh yeah - the info on the website and the user manual is wrong" said tech support..." Not encouraging)

That being said - if you just want to get something up and running quickly, and don't mind sticking with their defaults - it is a no hassle setup....more info
  • simple
I found the directions easy to follow up until the WPA settings, which took a few extra minutes to follow one small step at a time. After I figured it out, I realized that the directions WERE clear, I was just over-thinking it. Ooops.

I have had to reset the router (unplug, plug back in) twice in the year I have owned it. That's amazing, because the router it replaced was junk and would reset itself... every three seconds... so I couldn't actually use the internet. I like that it works. Oh, except I don't like how 8 feet away from it, my signal strength is 90%. I think that's odd, but then again, I can still use it from any room in the apartment without a problem.

I am not sure how important the antenna angles are, but I keep them pointed up like in the picture. The router doesn't get too hot, and I never give it a second thought. I just wish I could set it on its side with a stand to take up less space, but then the antennas would not work how I imagine they do now. So I get that. ...more info
