Customer Reviews:

  • Best RTS, finiky online matching
Generals still holds up as a well balanced and fun to play RTS. Each side offers a unique play style, and once you learn the tricks and build order, matches become tense and brutal affairs.

Generals Online is a terrible service by todays standards, and one can only hope this game gets picked up by Steam.

Buy this game, or even better, get it in the Strategy bundle with Black and White 2, and Battle for Middle Earth....more info
  • Let me make it simple for you!
I will make my review as simple & clear as possible:
If you like strategy games, you MUST have this game!
If you are planning to try a strategy game for the first time, THIS is the way to begin!
If you don't know if you like strategy games, TRY this one! If you don't like it, then you don't like strategy games!

Both the game & the expansion pack are great. However I recommend starting with the game alone for sometime, then add in the expansion, just to get the maximum value of the deal....more info
  • One heck of a solid RTS
This game is just awesome. The graphics are so so compared to others but it really makes up for it in the diversity of the factions. No faction is alike whatsoever. No copy/paste going on here. There are so many ways to crush your opponent which makes the replay value extremley high. I play this online with friends i know or friends i made online and it just makes a great time. Unfortunately I had to give it 4 stars though (i really didn't want to) but I just clearly can't say it's a perfect game (hence 5/5 stars would say its perfect). The reason being the graphics could have been better as stated before. The story lines, not great. No cutscene acting like other command and conquer games. And when playing online, sometimes the servers are down and you can't sign on for the longest time. Also when a friend makes a game room online it takes forever to see it come up. Other than these flaws, the game sure does make up for it. Flawed, but near perfect game. I will continue to play it for years to come....more info
  • The benchmark against which all RTS games should be measured
This is an awesome game. Hands-down, it is the most replayable in the Command and Conquer family, and it gets RTS right. Every RTS game to come out after C&C:Generals and Zero Hour will be compared to them.

The forces are balanced to a point. If you play effectively as any of the three factions, you will be able to tailor your strategy to beat any opponent.

The Global Liberation Army is comprised of psychotic fanatics hell-bent on chemically poisoning the world - complete with evil laughter, pointed comments, and grassroots tech tree that relies on stealth and surprise. The People's Army of China are determined, methodical, and sometimes a little tyrannical in their overwhelming firepower. The cocky US military are like a bunch of tech-savvy cowboys who thrive on new gadgets.

This is the first C&C to be in true 3-D. Soldiers can enter buildings (as well as torch them) - but US forces can rappel by copter into them, taking the buildings floor-by-floor. GLA "martyrs" can create car bombs and drive them at high speeds into enemy forces. Terrain becomes a factor, especially with Chinese inferno tanks and migs that create firestorms to burn swaths of enemy land.

While the missions for Generals are too few (only 7 or 8 for each faction), the Zero Hour expansion pack adds more playability with more deeply interactive environments (ie, snipers shoot at your forces from overhead rail bridges, while minarets tumble after being damaged sufficiently) and sub-factions. My favorite is the Chinese nuke general - whose migs drop tactical nukes instead of napalm.

So yes, this game is devious, clever, and about the most enjoyable RTS I've played since the 1998 release Total Annihilation (which is still fun, despite the VGA graphics)....more info
  • Command & Conquer Generals & Zero Hour
A step up from the original C&C games with better and more realistic game play and weapons. You can only choose from three different countries this time but there are many different types of styles you can choose to be. For example you can be the United States, but you can choose from three different Generals; Air Force General, Super Weapons General, and Laser General. Make sure that your processor and video card are in accordance with the minimum needed to play the game so you don't have a lot of lag and make the game less fun for yourself!...more info
  • Hmmmm need a fast computer
This is a really good game online and off but you need to have a really good computer.
I have an Amd Athlon XP 2100+ with a g-force fx5200 ultra and 256 mb ram..
    And guess what?!?!
    It still lags a lot
With China it has the best tanks in the world but slow gathering.
The USA army is good but not really powerful... the Air Force General is not that good either.
Once you get this game i suggest you get the usa: laser general, but hey that's my opinion.
The GLA are good at gathering supplies but the are weak in small numbers. Any way you count this this is a solid game...
Oh and one last thing the stuff i was talking about like the generals that's all in Zero Hour which is still a solid game....more info
  • GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
This is the best online RTS game I have ever played and I've played all of the warcrafts and star craft you MUST BUY THIS GAME it rocks...more info
  • Finally, a Real-Time Strategy Game that Rivals TA
I picked up C&C Generals Deluxe on a whim, and was not disappointed. Real-Time Strategy has to remain fresh and engaging to be worth playing, and you have tons of options in this game.

First, you can play as one of three forces -- the U.S., China, or the "GLA" -- a terrorist group. Each of the three forces has unique skills, abilities, and weapons. With the Deluxe edition, you have two mission tracks for each of the three forces, so you have plenty of missions to play. Additionally, the skirmishes are incredible, you can edit your own maps, and online play is great.

I'm still partial to Total Annihilation as the best RTS game ever made, and I don't think C&C quite measures up, since it has fewer options (for example, only four aircraft types as the U.S., two as China, and zero as the GLA) than TA. However, this is still a very solid game, and I've spent many hours playing this title. This is highly recommended....more info

  • Amazing game but wrong plot
The best RTS game so far. I got a soupped up computer & the game is just amazing. Incredible soundtrack. BUT one thing that I have a problem with: the story. In this game, China is going after the terrorist org (which they attacked China for no reason)while the USA don't want to be part of. In the real world, it is COMPLETELY the opposite: the USA goes after the terrorist org while China is a country that doesn't wage war....more info
  • the best game ever
This game has the best grapics in the world I love c&c. I don't know what would happen if C&C was never invented....more info
  • Thax god this game beat warcraft
R u bored of the war games u have right now? So get this Generals, even though u need a fast computer, still a good offer. If u try China have strong tank, but slow money. While the Usa comes along with missile blocking techology, also very fast money. Thy Gla doesn't need power, get a little money. (1st Generals game).

As they go on new techology comes new and improved armys. Like the each armys has a general three 4: China, Usa, and Gla. Now comes with new upgrades, units, and strutures.Install right away. If u want 2 know the new units, strutures, and upgrades, don't ask me. Buy it!!!...more info

  • I wasted waaaaaaaay too much time playing this game online
I doubt it is as popular online now since there have been many great new additions to the RTS game genre the last couple of years, but this will go down as one of the best. Why? 12 different armies to choose from, each with their advantages and disadvantages and quirks to master, fast paced games based on combat rather than economy building. I doubt there will be anything as good for a long time....more info
  • Great game and training in strategy

  • An oldie but a goodie!
I've been a fan of this series of games for over 10 years, but just recently have had the equipment to play network games in the house with my 2 boys. C&C Generals and C&C Zero Hour, which both come in the deluxe edition, are old games by today's technology standards, but they are still excellent if you want some interactive and strategic fun--and even better if your machines are not all the highest powered PCs on the market.

I bought multiple copies, because you'll need separate licenses if you want to play a networked game. My sons and I have gravitated toward C&C Zero Hour, because it has a plethora of weapons and landscapes. There are 3 levels (Easy, Medium, and Hard) in Zero Hour. From our perspective, Medium is the equivalent of C&C General's Hard--it's tough! This is a good thing, because Zero Hour's Hard level provides constant challenges!

We have had no difficulties playing with 2 computers networked together. We have encountered difficulty connecting 3 machines together. Sometimes things get so out of sync that we have to reboot each machine and start over. I don't know if this is a quirk of the game or if it's something with my network. We can live with it tho, because we have a blast playing the game together.

Here are a few ways of playing that we've enjoyed:

You can always play with everyone taking on everyone else. Of course, my boys usually happen to gang up on me, and they are now good enough that I'm toast. Now, we'll set up teams and I'll get to have an "easy" army on my team. It helps a little... ;-)

If you can, place all the computers in your network close together--it really contributes to some good natured smack-talk!

Put yourselves on the same team and take on a couple of hard armies. That presents a great challenges and forces siblings to work together. This has been great.

If you have an inexperienced or young player, put a medium or hard army on their team. It balances things out very well.

And finally, have headphones for every player if you're all within hearing distance. Otherwise your opponents will quickly figure out what your strategy is!

Highly recommend the games, even though they're dated. These are classics and not that difficult for younger players to learn. Have fun!...more info
  • Excellent. Buy it now. It is still a great game.
This is one of the best real time strategy (RTS) game ever. I have been playing this game for two years with my friend online, and we are still playing it. If you still didn't have this game, go and buy one.

Units are not so futuristic, so you can realize the power of the units. One spiderlike tank is not killing the entire army with one shot. So that is good. Huge variety of land units, air strikes, mines, intelligence units and etc. You can earn experience, after destroying enemy units and you can gain new points to earn new technologies. Unit and technology variety is great.

One of the best features in the game is resource management. One type of resource makes you to concentrate on strategy. If all resources in the map are collected, you can still make money by building alternative resource collecting units/buildings. If you like long games like I do, this is a great attribute. I remember playing Red Alert or Starcraft with my friends at LAN party. Every game was the same. We were attacking each other with super high technology for first 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, we were attacking each other with stones and arrows, just because of resources were depleted on the map. Game makers should place this property to all new generation RTS's games (I hope Blizzard considers resource generation or alternative resource production in Starcraft 2).

Game is relatively old, so you can play with almost any system with no problem. Graphics are still good, and game is created on 3D basis. You can rotate or zoom the map. I have a three year old, cheap and on-board video carded laptop. Although these negative computer configuration, I play this game fluently and having great fun.

If you are looking for great RTS, this is one of them.

Generals is the best strategy game for the online play. It's simple and popular = you won't have trouble finding a game partners.

  • Still poor support from EA...but the game is awesome
My son and I have played Red Alert & Red Alert 2 together for a long time. We bought this product and the difference is amazing. The graphics and missions are much more like todays warfare around the world. For example, you can upgrade a regular soldier (USA ranger) to be able to capture buildings...you don't need an engineer. You can upgrade your tanks to have drones ...so every tank or Humvee can have upgrades....so a cluster of vehicles has all these cool things flying overhead helping win battles. You can call in airstrikes and lots of other cool things that make the game much more realistic.

On support...EA still misses....for example in the book it says if you register they will give you a free cheat code or tip for doing that. The only thing they gave us was a note saying we could now play the game online. On top of that the click through menu on the software for Generals main website is no longer there..and there is no redirection (if you can believe that!!). there's no easy way to ask questions and these problems are not addressed on their FAQ's page.

We haven't figured out how to do everything on this game yet, and the lack of tutorials or tips is frustrating for my son (7 yrs old). Yet the missions are more like Iraq/Afghanistan warfare in the news over the last few years than it is like Viet Nam or WWII.

We have had these same problems with almost every EA game we own. But still this game is an incredible improvement over the other Command and Conquer games....more info
  • Command & Conquer: Generals
Apparently, the people who have been knocking this game don't know what Command & Conquer even is. The rating before this one was written by somebody who doesn;t have a clue about the game, and isn't bright enough to play it. Command & Conquer: Generals is one of the best strategy games Westwwod or Electronic Arts has produced! The graphics, unless you are blind or have a very low-quality system and monitor, are some of the best 3D for this type of strategy game. The beginning missions are easy, but they get progressively harder, like the preceeding C&C versions. The AI, for strategy, is pretty good, but can bet a little predictable at times. This game has alot of extras, such as medals and side missions that make the game more enjoyable and interesting. However, I reccomend this game to people who have played the older C&C editions in the C&C Universe. If you haven't you probably won't get it. By they way, if you have a weird fixation with plumbers, or think this game is racist, you've got issues way deeper than most professionals can address. Overall, Command & Conquer: Generals is the icing on the cake when it comes to strategy and C&C!...more info
  • My name is James
This Game is sooo bad. The movement speed of infantry is the speed of a snail crossing over russia! The US troops look like they either have blue skin or they are wearing VERY tite clothes. Ahhhhhhh! The game has a glith and it built a plumber and not a GLA freedom fighter. Oh no it's the same for their pickup's with the machine guns on the back. The rocket dudes take like ten thousand hits to destroy a tank. Oh and the tank fires it's cannon at the infantry (takes about five minutes to kill one like this) Why dosen't the tank fire a machine gun? Oh yeah look at the size of the chinese nukes, can;t they even destroy the enemy command centre? And why is the rocket buggy so small? Smaller than those pickups and the "plumbers". Why do the civilian buildings have more life than military buildings! Oh and the civilian cars are quite small smaller than the civilians themselves! And how can a flash bang grenade kill someone, shouldn't it just parlyze them. Oh yeah a jet fighter can't even destroy one lousy GLA tank! I get promoted and choose these pathfinders/snipers they kill in one hit have a rappid fire rate and are invisble, cool! THe enemy now has these ahhhhhh my infantry are all dying and I haven't a clue of where the enemys are! Everything about the game is wrong but for tank vs tank and sometimes person vs person. And there is this one AK47 upgrade for the angry mobs they are not AK's there Uzis. And since when did terrorists use uzis. And the ccuds, a missle the size of a FedEx truck can't destroy a building and sometimes can't even desroy a tank. THen when you fire the missle another suddenly appears in it's place! Why not go back to some supply place in your base to get another missle. There is wvwn a limited amount of supplys and even lasers can't kill a person. People are like the terminaters that can only be killed by another person or get run over, while on the other hand they can only kill other people. And when you destroy a building it just shatters into a couple of shards hardly enough to even rebuild one twentyith of the structure. OK enough critisism time for good things.

No soldiers running around like swearing phyco maniacs like on WarCraft III. People don't always fall into the same death pose every time like every time the soldier falls on his back with arms extended (only exception GLA pickups and rocket buggys). You have lots of cool upgrades and abilitys and amazing vehicle and envirornmental graphics. The civilian buildings are strangly more realistic than the military. You can run over smaller vehicles with the bigger ones. THe GLA have this cool scrap and salvage ability for their vihicles where you can pickup the remains of a destroyed vehicle to upgrade your own to better weapons, veterancy or give you money.

Over all this game is not so good but not at all offenceive so a ten year old can play. (some of these ESRB ratigs are wrong like in Dawn of War)

The campaign has about seven missions for each team. And in skirmish mode you can earn these medals for things like beating all the maps in hard/normal/easy. You can gain promotions for killing more units to unlock new abilitys and units.

You will love this game at first then you will get sooooo bored (replay ability is too good so you play too much the first day and can't play anymore cause you did everything on the second so you uninstall the game)

I'm the same person who wrote the previous reveiw on the plumbers. ...more info

  • Very racist, bloated, and not made by Westwood
Warning! This game is extremely racist! If you are a fan of Westwood's other games, like Dune 2, Dune 2000, Emperor, etc. and like playing the Noble Atreides so you can side with the Fremen, you will really not like this game!
If you hate arabs, and to a lesser extent, asians, then you might like this game.
This game isn't actually made by Westwood, and it shows. Not just in the racism, but many things about this game feel different.
Also the system requirements for this game are ridiculous. It requires loads of hard disk space and a very fast machine. Definately not a game for those with old computers.
I loved all the other Command & Conquer games, but this one I uninstalled fairly quickly....more info

  • Great Strategy
I like to switch every few months between Sci-Fi, and RL. Between SF 1st person games to birds-eye viewing an army invading an enemy base.

I have to say that the Generals series has fulfilled gaming needs ;)

The various generals allow you to become great in specific fields such as infantry, tanks, air force, nuclear power, and much more.

I won't go into too many details so you can try it for yourself but I will say that, while I miss the old C&C games (they don't play on XP :..(), Generals and Zero Hour have the most impressive graphics and some of the most detailed game play you will see.

The explosions are real, the sound is undeniably great. US Rangers fast roping from a Chinook, Stealth Fighters bombing specific enemy targets, Chinese armored divisions crossing key bridges, and GLA demolition trucks lurking in 'abandoned' cities, awaiting to kamikazie on an enemy convoy.

All in all, it has everything a strategic gamer likes.

Buy the Deluxe edition because I, for one, enjoy playing both campaings. It's also fun once in a while to go back to Generals instead of Zero Hour to see what it was like to win the battlefield without Chinese Helix choppers flying cover.

Though it has high system requirements, it is well worth it. If you buy it and it's laggy then it's a problem with your computer's specifications and not with the game.

Oh, forgot one Con. The online multiplayer gets pretty laggy. I mean I played with a friend online (2v2comps) and it was getting pretty laggy, though maybe it's just my computer (even though it's brand new)....more info
  • HA! Not as good as the old one
This game would be far better if the resources lasted more than an hour. I like to take my time playing a game, build up your forces and attack, but use a strategy. This game requires you to move quick, build your tanks up as fast as possible and attack because when you are done you will not have any more resourses coming in. The AI is horible, it focuses so much on attacking you first thing in the game that before you are done building up your base they have run out of money. NO joke all you have to do is wait for the AI to attack and then send some troops to their base, knowing that they don't have the money to build more troops. I give this 3 stars because the multiplayer seems to be the only reason I play the game....more info
