  • Game recognizes game
I've read reviews on either side of the issue regarding this cd, and even a couple in the middle. What I have to say to all is that this cd is great, if only because of the vocal skills of the artist. Even songs that could otherwise be termed "mediocre" or "weak", Hamilton shines with his gritty, southern-gospel infused, gully style. The album comes off as honest and not-watered down. Hamilton seems to say what he wants to say without regard for the mainstream audience's preference for pop culture copycats. And to those who say he is just copying the styles of Stevie Wonder, Al Green, and Marvin Gaye, I say this: show me an artist that has not tried to imitate his/her heroes, and I will show you an artist without direction that is not producing at his/her highest level. Bravo, Anthony Hamilton. Bravo....more info
  • 4.5 stars: Gritty, Smoky, Neo Blues....................
Superb song writing and well sung songs. Anthony Hamilton hits the nail on the head with such hits as Mama Knew Love, Comin where I'm From, Charlene, Float, Lucille and Better Days. His voice is a mix of Charlie Wilson and Bill Withers. ...more info
  • I Love this album.
This album/Anthony Hamiltons soulful music is wonderful. I keep this cd in heavy rotation....more info
  • One Of The Most Polished R&B Records I've Heard In A While
As a kid growing up listening to a variety of music, especially Hip Hop and R&B, I've had alot of of music listening experience and to be honest with you Anthony Hamilton isnt exactly the savior of R&B, but that doesn't mean he isn't talented. As a vocalist Anthony is fantastic when it comes to tone control of his vocals and as a songwriter he is well crafted, however, that doesn't mean that he doesn't need practice. The Album Opens with "Mama Knew Love" a classic example of smooth R&B and follows into one of the albums best tracks "Cornbread, Fish, and Collard Greens" a greasy, hip hop/soul mashup with fine results."I'm A Mess" is a great desperation love song and could be one of my favorites on the album. The Album Closes with "I Tried" a good closing to a good album with only three dissapointing tracks("Since I Ain't Seen You", "Better Days", and "Lucille").This record isnt exactly the rebirth of soul...but it sure as hell is a decent attempt....more info
  • The Most Underated Soul Artist OUT!
My title speaks for everything I have to say about the whole album. Now if you do not believe me go out and spend that little bit of chump change in your bank account.

When it comes to music I rather go download the song off the net or something. But when I walked into Best Buy and heard this CD booming through the store, I asked the female sales associate what CD was that they has booming and she of course replied "Anthony". She even went on to give me descriptions for all the songs on this LP. Ex. "I'm A Mess" she explained to me was the ideal song to listen too when you and your girl are having problems or even have just broken up. Fellas I speak directly to you, this album is worth it; And this is coming from one of the most pickiest music listeners out there.

Ladies, this album is damn near as good as Floetry's....more info
  • Coming from where I'm From
The title says it and speaks it all. Anthony Hamilton conjures up soul a la Donny Hathaway, Al Green, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding but stakes out his own territory with poetic, harmonic grace and strength. Every single cut on this CD evokes an emotion and a memory of something in my life story. This brother is singing and telling it 'from where I'M from'. How did he know???? How could he musically interpret everything I've felt??? If there is any Soul Monarchy out there, please, please knight this man and bestow the title of Sir Soul on him!! He truly, utterly deserves it! GET THIS ALBUM ASAP!!...more info

  • Not as bad as they say it is
Anthony Hamilton's second album has received praise as well as harsh criticism. Im on the praise side because I genuinely like his music. Comin From Where I'm From was a soulful joint that turned me on to his music. Charlene and Since I Seen You are pretty good tracks too. Lucille is my favorite track on the album. On this song, Anthony tells a story of a woman who is abused and how she left Anthony for the abuser. There are a few songs I dont care for. Cornbread, Fish & Collard Greens is a riot and not in a good way. Better Days, My First Love featuring Latoiya Williams and Chyna Black are also songs I could do without. Other than these flaws this album is not bad and warrants a listen. Anthony Hamilton's Comin From Where Im From is definitely a slept-on album for 2003 and you know what the crazy thing is? The same people who trounced this album turned around and jumped on the bandwagon when Soulife came out. Aint life grand? Standouts: SINCE I SEEN YOU, CHARLENE, IM A MESS, COMIN FROM WHERE I'M FROM, LUCILLE, FLOAT and I TRIED....more info

  • Anthony Hamilton - Comin' From Where I'm From
Chilling in the late night now listening to Anthony Hamilton's sophomore album "Comin' From Where I'm From" (2003). Listening to this release is a pleasure, Anthony Hamilton laces this record with soulful vocals, taking his audience through an enjoyable journey. I became familiar with Hamilton a few years ago, when he made a memorable guest appearance on Jadakiss single "Why". North Carolina's Anthony Hamilton opens this release up with a heartfelt tribute to his mother on "Mama Knew Love". My favourite track on this release is the sensational single "Charlene", Anthony Hamilton shines on this joint about losing one's loved one. I especially like the chorus to this memorable joint. On the follow up track "I'm A Mess", Hamilton mourns the women who walked out of his life without an explanation. Another single on this release and highlight is the title track "Comin From Where I'm From", Anthony Hamilton recalls how life can be away around his way, while singing about more heartbreak on "Lucille". Latoya Williams and Anthony Hamilton provide a duet with "My First Love". I appreciate the passion/realness Anthony Hamilton puts into his music, the end result is substantial music, that will stand the test of time. I recommend "Comin' From Where I'm From" for the collection.

  • Feel good music Straight from the Soul
Oh my !! Anthony Hamilton's CD really moved me in more ways than one. When I was first introduced to this CD. My dad had called me upset he was sitting at home by himseld and 'Charlene " came on he called me and said he is so emotional by this song to go out and purchase it and let my mother hear it. I listened to the song first before giving it to my mother, I wanted to know what about this song could make my dad break down. After listening to the song "Charlene" , I called my mom Charlene and told her to come listen to this CD. She fell in love with the Song as well as the CD. Needless to say after 24 years of separation this song brought a conversation on between the two of them and they are very close friends now. My favorite would have to be (I'm a Mess Right Now ) ,Of course (Charlene) and (My first Love ). I love the rest of the CD. But those are my favorites. Anthony Hamilton's voice is so moving and relaxing you can't help but to enjoy good music like that. It reminded me of being back in Louisianna in the Bayou in one of the clubs with the straw roof ,with everybody dancing, sweating and listening to the jukebox. It took me way back. Surely a Hit for all generations. ...more info

  • Not Bad
I came across Anthony Hamilton after getting a sampler Cd from HMV which featured' Better days'. I must have rewinded that one song more times than I care to remember. Based on that excellent song, I was chomping at the bits for the CD to be released. Well my Little Sister beat me to the punch, so I was able to borrow her copy. To be honest, my view upon hearing it then, is the same as now. Whilst I'd admit the Mr. Hamilton can sing, and there are some nice moments on board, to my mind it's not a must have 5 star release. I don't know if this says more about the R&B scene nowadays that an OK release that hankers back to the Southern Soul sound of yester year is treated as the next best thing. Oh, I still love 'better days'. ...more info
  • Since I Seen't You....
Yo this album is crazy ! Homey is not playing with the vocals. He might be ugly as hell, but the brother can sing. Cop this album if you haven't already...peace....more info
  • i like it
he is ver under-rated as an artist. he may not be as polished as everyone else, but he's got the voice better than some. i like this whole album....more info
  • A few good songs
I like this style of music. But as far as this album goes... It's just "OK". It's one of those albums that is nice to have if you want to listen to that genre, but not necessarily something that you'd listen to every day. The stuff gets quite stale after a little bit. :(...more info
  • Call it what you want....the best CD I've heard in years
First off, I'm just a casual R&B listener. And I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Neo-Soul and plain 'ol Soul if my life depended on it. Anywayz, let's move on.

I'm a hip-hop head. I first heard Anthony Hamilton on the Nappy Roots song Po' Folks. His voice immediately caught my attention. I had heard the album version without Anthony, and I'm of the opinion, he turned a good song into a great song. Still, it wasn't enough to make me go hunting for more of him.

Next, I hear him singing the hook on 'Why' by Jadakiss. Again, AH made the song. The guy's voice is just spectacular. Now the name will catch my attention, but I'm still not trying to scour the record stores for AH recordings.

THEN, I'm watching the Dave Chapelle Show, and our man AH is the musical guest. This is the first time I've heard one of his songs. He performed 'Comin From Where I'm From'. My girlfriend and I sat on the couch in utter silence, not wanting to interrupt this spell spilling out of my TV. I can remember thinking over and over 'This guy has a GREAT voice!' And it was almost eerie how silent the room had become except for this man's singing. I mean, we hardly BREATHED, let alone spoke, until the song was over.

I searched all over the internet for the next two days until I got a copy of 'Comin From Where I'm From' (But I DID PURCHASE this CD when I got paid that Friday. It's important to support the artists that put their heart and soul into entertaining us. But I just had to have it IMMEDIATELY).

So, I've listened to the disc over and over. I've read the reviews saying it's not all that. Well, I'm no music critic, but I know what sounds good. And this disc is fantastic. When I listen to it, I don't skip a single track. It can play for hours on end while I'm at work. If you're some sort of neo-soul purist, or whatever the 1-star reviewers are, then maybe you won't be into AH. BUT, if you're just a normal human being that likes GREAT MUSIC....here it is....more info

  • Extremely talented artist
Anthony Hamilton is a great artist and performer, I recently atteneded his concert in Atlanta, and I must say that he is wonderful in person. The radio and cd does not do his voice any justice, he's better live. Thank you Anthony for such a wonderful perfomance. And to all the negative fed back you do not know your r&b music....more info
  • Timless Music...in time when most music is garbage
I liked Anhtony Hamilton from his appearances with 2Pac and Nappy Roots and even heard a small buzz about him from his past. I wasn't expecting much from the album, but it is a classic. It's real music. Alot of artists sample and remake songs but Anthony Hamilton was strategic in his choices because the songs he remade and/or sampled actually make sense and have a meaning. The is a timeless and classic album. Right now music is garbage, and people are rushing cd's out or putting out a cd with singles and fillers...this cd will always be this good even 20 years from now. Music is back!! Much love to Musiq Soulchild too!...more info
