Sure, Detroit had the MC5 and the Stooges, but Long Island's Kiss threw down their own gauntlet. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss cleaved a spot between glam, punk, waning Woodstock rock, and adult-oriented pop and became a phenomenon in the process. Kiss kept their music simple and, of course, sexual, with the likes of "Hotter than Hell," "Love Gun," and "Calling Dr. Love," paving the way for the waves of pop-metal sexpot wannabes and winning fans in such quantities that they launched the so-called Kiss Army. Their magnetism permeates this 21-song set, with Criss sounding so lonesome he could cry on "Beth," and the fire-breathing, blood-spitting Simmons unfailingly serving up a comical mix of menace and lasciviousness. The version of "Rock & Roll All Nite" comes from 1975's crowd-noise drenched Alive!, cut at the time when live albums were de rigueur. This collection was made smartly enough that only four songs come from the band's post-Dynasty period, making The Very Best of Kiss an essential primer on 1970s rock grandeur. --Andrew Bartlett

  • A Great Collection of KISS
When confronted by the sheer number of KISS compilations that have been made over the years, one can be forgiven for walking away with a sense of disgusted futility. However, all is not lost, and there is hope for a whole new generation of KISS freaks.

"The Very Best of Kiss" is a 21-song, hour-plus CD that covers songs from as far back as 1974 right up to 1992. Some of my own favourites are "Deuce", "I Stole Your Love" and "Detroit Rock City". Of course, most of the others are fantastic as well.

For a good overview of KISS and their evolution over the years, this CD is a good one. It will give you a very broad idea of what the KISS phenomenom was all about, and what their music can be like.

Just as a final thought, I was really impressed with the variety of guitar work in the music, and the different styles used between songs.

"The Very Best of KISS" is a great first step to meeting some gods of rock and roll and a time when gaudy costumes ruled the stage and generous chest hair was considered sexy....more info
  • Another best of?
One thing that was particularly exciting about being a Kiss fan,was the new albums and seeing how the new songs fit into the stage show. While there is some great songs here, how many more "Best Of's" do we get.If you have been a Kiss fan for as long as i have (1976),no doubt you would already have these songs.
If you are a younger fan and dont have these songs, get it for sure because its great value for money.
But for us older fans,we have heard it all before.

"The Very Best Of KISS" is exactly what the title says. With hits like "Lick It Up", "Forever", "Beth", and "Calling Dr. Love" this is a necessity for any music collection. Of course "New York Groove" from the album 'Ace Frehely' is another gem on this collection. • Excellent Place To Start With KISS
Ah, yes, I remember: This was the first KISS album I got in early 2005. Ever since, I have been a tremendous KISS fan. I got it with a gift certificate, just as a joke, to my mother, but when I popped it into my CD player, I was blown out of the water with superb, classic glam/pop-metal!
There isn't enough space to give an entire review, but I'd like to say that I really like every, single song of this album. From the high-energy hard rockers to the lovely, acoustic ballads, this song is a FANTASTIC way to get to know the band KISS. Think, 21 tracks, and it covers the '74-'92 era (well, not really an era), but all the same, it will be a valuable addition to your collection, especially if you like classic rock and pop-metal like me.
If you liked this album and want to build a KISS collection, I would also suggest: ''Destroyer'', ''Rock and Roll Over'', ''Love Gun'', the original ''KISS'' and ''Creature of the Night''. So...ROCK ON!...more info
  • Great stuff for 70/80 shift kids
Cold Gin, God gave rock'n roll to you, I was made for lovin' you, Rock'n roll all night, Detroit rock city, the works. Brings back memories from the times of my first drinks, trying to pick up girls with varying success and, being a general rebel, people trying to kick my arse 'cause Kiss is too weird. Those were the days and they're all on this album....more info
  • Give me a break!
Kiss have more compliation albums than I have had hot dinners. This is just a rehash of other compliation albums. Nothing new here. Double Platinum is far better...more info
  • ONE LAST KISS?...
KISS-THE VERY BEST OF KISS: Let's see now...just how many Kiss kompilations does this make?...Oops! My kalculater just imploded! Shout it out loud kids, at last they got it right! Here's pert' near all the Kiss klassix from the glory daze (STRUTTER, HARD LUCK WOMAN, CALLlNG DR. LOVE, ROCK AND ROLL ALL NITE, DETROIT ROCK CITY), to the (blessedly brief) disco phase (I WAS MADE FOR LOVIN' YOU) to the solo forays (Ace Frehley's funky NEW YORK GROOVE) to the make up challenged---"if we don't take it off now, we'll never be able to slap it back on"---years. Sure, BETH is a better power ballad than FOREVER and GOD GAVE ROCK 'N ROLL TO YOU should have stayed in Argent's catalogue, but at least they ignored concept disc THE ELDER and 90's desperation ploy I JUST WANNA, the WORST sex song since Billy Squier's SHE GOES DOWN. This won't be KISS' last greatest hits kash-in, but they'll never be able to make a better one. RATING: FIVE LOVE GUNS

  • Let Your CD Player Kiss This
This KISS compilation is a good record, but not a great one. KISS was a big band in the mid-70s thru early 80s, and this CD gives a good overview of their stuff. Something that keeps this album back is that a lot of the songs, especially in the first half of the disc, sound so much alike, almost just like variants of one song. The good tunes amount to solid rock. Here they are:

    Strutter
    Detroit Rock City
    Calling Dr. Love
Hard Luck Woman - an actual sensitive, acoustic tune from KISS
    Christine 16
    New York Groove
I Was Made for Lovin You - great song, really moves, lyrics stick in head
Love it Loud - kinda cheesy lyrics, but tune is catchy
    Lick it Up - ditto
Forever - ballad from 1990 that's pretty good coming from hard rockers

This album gets stronger toward the end, in large part due to more song variation...more info
  • BEST GLAM ROCK BAND AND BEST COMPILATION
I listen kiss for 2 years. They are really good and like them!Best song is Detroit rock city and Beth.KISS ARE THE BEST BAND IN 70s and 80s....more info
  • One of the only good classic rock bands!
Face it folks, classic rock is classic crap. Bands like The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Beetles and The Rolling Stones were all a bunch of groupie-loving drug addicted cringe inducing untalented mongs. "Dark Side of the Moon" is probably the most boring album ever created. Thankfully, KISS made up for all of this with their awesome music! They created heavy metal which was copied by poor imitators like Black Sabbith. Songs like "Love Gun" contained both awesome musicianship and poetry. The only other good classic rock artists are The Darkness, The White Stripes, Elton John's "Victim of Love" album and Bush. If you're new to classic rock, you got to listen to this album. It pwns all that Rush and King Crimson n00b stuff....more info
