The NETGEAR FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall 8 with 8-Port 10/100 Switch offers:
- Eight auto-sensing 10/100 Mbps ports.
- Stateful Packet Inspection firewall and NAT for security.
- Eight dedicated VPN tunnels for secure remote links
Wired and Wireless Connectivity
NAT and an SPI firewall protects your network from most common attacks. View larger.
The FVS318 has a built-in switch, with eight 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing, Auto Uplink ports. With Network Address Translation (NAT) routing, up to 253 users can simultaneously access your connection.
For businesses that require more than just a simple NAT router, the FVS318 offers significantly more protection. It provides: a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall to prevent Denial of Service attacks, an Intrusion Detection System (IDS), the ability to block Java/URL/ActiveX based on extension, and FTP/SMTP/RPC program filtering.
The FVS318 has eight dedicated VPN tunnels to protect links between remote locations, encrypting the data between them. IPSec-based encryption up to 256 bit is also supported. This lets you easily create secure connections to branch offices or mobile workforces.
Even with all the functionality the FVS318 provides, NETGEAR makes setup a breeze with the intuitive Smart Wizard that connects you to your ISP quickly. The web-based configuration screen is easy-to-use and requires no additional software. DHCP and PPPoE support makes widespread deployment simple.
The NETGEAR FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall 8 with 8-Port 10/100 Switch is backed by a 3-year warranty.

- Agree... Speed STINKS!
I had four of theese units in place and they all got replaced by the FVS338. The main reason is the speed. I have a lab and we tested the max Internet throughput of the FVS318's at 1.2Mbps! This is unacceptable. Oh yes, this is with the latest firmware.
Several calls to customer service left me infuriated at the lack of comprehension of the problem. I contacted their legal deptartment the same day. Several promises were made on Netgears part wich resulted in them having another level 1 tech call me again to insist I reinstall my OS!
I have successfully sued to get my money back.
With all of my venting done, I would like to say that I am still a fan of the Prosafe line and will continue to use it. But Netgear be warned, I will be all over you until you get this product line properly supported....more info
- This is Version 2, Not 3
I bought this for the hardware firewall. I got version 2, not 3. Amazon and (Amazon vendor) J&R listings did not indicate version.
I use it for two networked PC's and the firewall: no more, no less....more info
- Great Product
Installed & worked just as stated in only a few minutes..... Just follow the start-up directions and all was well.......more info
- Works Great -
I decided I needed a firewall and the FVS318 worked right out of the box. No issues, except that I needed to rename the IP address on my Qwest DSL modem. This wasn't a NETGEAR problem, but it was kind of hard to figure out since NETGEAR had no help for hooking up to a Qwest DSL modem. Qwest was totally unhelpful.
So if it looks like the Firewall isn't finding the internet, check your DSL modem IP address it probably is identical to the NETGEAR firewall.
Haven't tried the VPN and probably will not try it....more info
- netgear proves again it's tops
I hate to buy something and then learn you need to jump through hoops to install it and have it work right. I don't want to spend two months - as I did with another brand, finally to give up and buy a netgear. I bought a cheaper version of netgear's router and loved it. But after nearly two years it just died. Too cheap to fix, so I went to replace. I could have replaced with the same version for about half the price, but I liked the stronger firewalls, the closed ports on this one.
I am very computer literate and teach at a computer help "desk". I cannot recommend netgear products high enough for their sheer simplicity. Anyone can install a netgear router. They are plug in and virtually go with no problems what so ever.
I am very please with 8 ports, instead of the four, love the easy of installing, and am one happy netgear customer - for the second time....more info
- VPN for cheap
This FVS-318 is replacing two other models in the same box; it has VPN built in, an Internet gateway router and a 8 ports 10/100 switch, all for less than a 8 ports switch. The precedent VPN box cost about 5 times the price of this one.
The new firmware release 1.1 corrected lot of bugs; the anoying drop of TCP sessions seem to has been fixed. I ordered an other box to try VPN....more info
- the best wired router you should get, especially if you have Slingbox
I had FR114P, which is very solid and stable one
the first one died after about 2 year, the second lasted 5 years
since I have more and more connections, I have to upgrade to 8 port router
the choice is between Linksys and this one, and I chose this one because I was happy with FR114P
the web setup is 99% same as FR114P, except VPN options, that I have no plan to use it
FR114P has LTP port, which is no longer used (I have printer with LAN port), this one doesn't
the unit looks bulky, it runs cool even with 2 Slingboxes running, this is good
I read some routers have issue with Slingbox external access, and I have similar problem using Actiontec DSL combo, and now I only use it as modem only
FR114P doesn't have this issue, and FVS318 doesn't also
this router also has DDNS support (dyndns.org), which is essential for DSL users
I read that the router has speed issue between WAN and LAN, since I use DSL, which is not noticeable
the only shortcoming is the router requires restart when applying some settings, which may be annoying, but I put some setup before putting it to service
generally, this is the wired router you should get, especially if you have Slingbox, because it doesn't have problem with it
don't settle for less...more info
- Easy interface and set up, lots of features, little price.
I got this router to replace a reliable Linksys router that lacked the Netgear FVS318NA's VPN feature and 8 port built in switch.
The VPN feature and the 8 port integrated switch are the best selling points for this Netgear router over other brands and models. The built in Virtual Public Network (VPN) feature let's you use the FVS318NA with a wide variety of VPN Clients and Hosts (not all of course, but many.) Netgear has a 25 page online document that tells you how to VPN your FVS318NA to a Windows 2000 Server for example. Easiest of course is to buy two FVS318NA's and create a point to point VPN between two offices, friends and family with DSL, a cable modem, etc. The built in 10/100 switch and Internet connection sharing means most people with small networks won't need to purchase a separate switch in order to plug in all of their computers, game systems and other Ethernet\Internet using devices.
The built in Firewall offers more than the usual NAT invisibility (it does stateful inspection of packets) and logging is adequate but could be better (more information than is currently available in the router's logs would be helpful for troubleshooting problems and or security.)
All in all you will not be disappointed with the money spent on this little "network cabinet" in a box. Netgear seems to have thought of most everything your power home or small to medium office user would want....more info
- Typical Netgear driver frustrations
Replaced a four-year-old FS314. Wouldn't work with standard drivers on the accompanying disk. Had to download updated driver, go through the setup process 2nd time. Still can't get the web administration feature to work when administrator IP addresses are filtered to a range or single IP. Solid build - as usual, My dissatisfaction with Netgear involves their buggy firmware, and has for years. You know what their Tech Support is like so no need to get beat a long-dead horse....more info
- Best Router Going, but worse technical support.
Tech support unable to answer even easy questions. I asked about some rules setting, he hesitated then asked me what I needed rules for! Why do I need a router! I hung up. However there is an awful lot to like;
Anyhow the thing I really loved about NetGear are as follows:
a. 5 year warranty vs1
b. SPI capable on most models.
c. One of the few Router companies that discloses to the end user the make and model as well as
the speed of the routers CPU.
d. One of the few manufacturers that has most of their routers certified with either the ICSA and
or the VPN compatibility testers.
e. metal case instead of plastic.
f. So much more ways to tweak many various settings vs other manufacturers.
So even though I just got my new NetGear FVS318 version 3 only 3 hours ago I see a lot to like....more info
- Careful on v3
There are multiple versions FVS318v1, v2, v3. And then there are multiple v3 versions that are invisible to the eye. Even with the latest firmwares as of March 2009, it really makes no difference. One version of v3 can live up to the 100mbps WAN line, the other is stuck at 10mbps. When you buy this anywhere you are taking a 50% chance.
If your WAN (out-going internet) line exceeds 10mbps, don't waste your time. This pretty much includes all customers with comcast broadband and verizon fios. If you don't care about the WAN speed stuck under 10mbps however, then the switch is actually very stable.
- Beware -there is a new model (v3) -still selling old ones v1
Be careful! Netgear is not telling people that there are 3 versions of the FVS318 (v1, v2 and v3)! Version 3 has a better CPU and uses a different firmware (v3.0). I feel cheated! Because Netgear sells all the older FVS318 as though they are all the same! Not the newest v3 model! What a low life company somebody should sue them. If the Netgear FVS318 has a new cpu then give it a new model number! But they don't, so most of us are buying earlier out-of-date models! Those of us who thought we were buying the latest model were being scammed and defrauded! Shame on Netgear!...more info

- Still a beta box
As of today(8/26/02 @ 22:00 UCT), The KVS318 production firmware on their website is still at 1.00 . My FVS318 routers consistently drop sessions in SSH, TELNET; many SSL logins fail, many JHTML pages fail to load. HTML pages intermittently load slowly, partially or not at all. I had to remove them from our network to resume business.
Their support is unresponsive. If I am able to get through on the phone the support reps are difficult to understand. Their technical support people have, in my experience, misenterpreted questions or problems even when I sent them TCP dumps, traps and logs to support the incident report. It appears English is a second language to their support people, a fact evident in their e-mail and web site support replies. Their answers are unreliable and often recommend disabling a feature like site keyword blocking or forwarding ports to non-existent computers. On their support web site they have closed some of my cases without answers, fixes or workarounds provided.
As of 8/26/02 @ 22:00 UCT, their U.S. support is presently on firmware beta N1.01 with no date available for the production firmware to be available. It fixes a lot of problems but in my opinion is not yet production quality.
For those who have a requirement for a product with features that work as advertised, I recommend against the FVS318. I recommend the DSLREPORTS web site for more information, support topics and user experiences with the FVS318....more info
- Everythings not included, expect to pay more
Box is misleading, although you can support 8 VPN clients the client software is extra. Expect to pay another $45 for one license and $130 for five. Input a complex password; ended up getting locked out several times, have to reset w/ a button on the switch and reconfigure. Letters and numbers work fine. So far the rest seems good. Should protect your always on connections....more info
- Not compatable with cisco VPN
Unfortunately I had to return because I use the Cisco VPN at work and needed this to be compatible. It was very easy to set up but I had to uninstall the VPN client when I need to run my Cisco VPN client and then reeninstall the Netgear VPN client when I want to run it....more info
