While all smoke alarms are designed to detect smoke, different sensing technologies react differently to certain types of fires. This alarm makes use of both ionization and photoelectric sensors to offer the earliest possible warning--regardless of the type of fire.
Sometimes a fire can smolder for hours before erupting into flames. Photoelectric Sensing Technology is more sensitive than Ionization Sensing Technology at detecting these sorts of smoldering fires, like those caused by cigarettes burning in couches or bedding.
Other fires erupt into flames quickly, like kitchen grease fires or fires fueled by paper burning in a wastebasket. Ionization Sensing Technology is generally more sensitive than Photoelectric Sensing Technology at detecting these sorts of flaming fires.
Loud Alarm and Reliable Construction for Peace of Mind
The loud, 85 dB alarm gets your attention quickly, so you can get out quickly or contain a minor fire before it spreads. Plus the smart dual sensor helps the detector recognize the difference between non-threatening conditions and real emergencies, so false alarms are minimized.
This smoke detector meets the UL 217 standard for dual-sensor home smoke detectors, which means that it has passed tough quality-assurance tests and can be depended on to offer reliable protection.
Remote Mute and Easy Battery Access for Safety and Convenience
To mute unnecessary alarms instantly, you can simply point almost any household remote control at the detector and click mute--whether the remote is for your TV, stereo, DVD player, or another appliance. The convenience of this feature means that something as simple as burnt toast never tempts you to take the battery out of your smoke detector and create an unsafe situation in your home. The mute button can also be used to test the alarm function, helping you ensure that your home and family are always protected.
This smoke detector is powered by a standard 9V battery (included). And, because a smoke detector is only effective if it is properly maintained, you'll appreciate that the EZ access battery door means there's no need to remove the alarm from your ceiling when it's time to change the battery.
This smoke detector's neutral, white finish blends in with your d¨¦cor, and the unit measures just 5.7 x 5.7 x 2.8 inches. It is backed by a limited 10 year warranty.

- TV remote sets off "test" feature
I have six of the older model and had to buy a new one (one > 10yrs old and ionization wears out. Was falsing even with new battery). The new model has a new feature that allows you to use a common remote to quiet (temp, for low battery or problem alarm) *or* for testing. But I found the latter "feature" (set off test) to be a *big* problem since it means that you can't use it in any room with a TV, stero, etc. with a remote. The family was constantly setting it off when changing the volume on the TV... Even covering the sensor hole *or* opening the unit and covering the actual sensor (with black electrical tape) wouldn't stop this (light getting thru the enclosure, PCB, etc.?)....more info
This product arrived defective. The company told me it might be the battery that was included although it was a new Duracell. They sent me 2 new batteries. The product is still NG. They have told me that they will send a new one. I'm waiting for it. The hassle is definitely not worth it!!!...more info
- Reliable, Sensitive, Functional
Best smoke alarm I've ever installed and used.
-Durable and reliable, good construction
-Detects variety of levels of smoke
-Sufficiently loud noise to be heard throughout house
-Easy to test for functionality
-Use TV remote for testing and shut-off
-Highly rated by professional reviewers as one of the best for the money
The key for optimum function is to place it in an ideal and strategic location (away from TV and players that use remotes) and not too close to the oven. I would recommend a 10 year Lithium battery and monthly tests for added insurance and peace-of-mind.
Small homes may need only one or two of these and larger homes likely one for each room....more info
- Not legal to sell or install in Oregon
As of January 1, 2002 a new State of Oregon smoke alarm law is in effect. ORS 479.257 states, "Every smoke alarm installed in a dwelling unit regulated under ORS chapter 90, a lodging house or a hotel guest room as required under ORS 479.255, shall contain" the following "features as described in ORS 479.297 (1) and (2)":
* Ionization smoke alarms that are solely battery-operated shall be packaged with a 10-year battery
* All ionization smoke alarms shall include a "hush" mechanism that allows a person to temporarily disengage the alarm for a period of not more than 15 minutes. This also applies to hard-wired smoke alarms....more info
- Great smoke alarm, but a little buggy
I purchased 2 of these a few months ago and installed them on separate floors of the house -- they seem to work great, all the reviews point to this model, and they do look great and install easily. The remote options for testing and silencing false alarms is also great.
The only drawback I've found is that very occasionally, turning the lights on (especially when it is dark and no ambient light is available) will set them off for at least 2-3 alarms. I don't know if it is because we have CFL bulbs (the kind that turn on quickly) in the hallways used for both alarms, but sometimes if you turn the lights on at night you get a very unexpected jolt from the piercing alarm. It's not the worst thing in the world, and shows it is working, but I suspect it's the photoelectric sensor portion (that most other smoke alarms leave out) that causes the false alarm.
Overall, though, a great alarm. Highly recommended!...more info

- A quality piece of equipment
A check of online comparisons had given the First Alert SA302CN battery-powered smoke and fire alarm high marks, and so far I haven't been disappointed.
The unit is of very sturdy construction (especially the cover hinge and latch) and was easy to install, and inserting the battery involved none of the often-encountered hassles of trying to properly line up the terminals in a flimsy bracket tucked behind the sensor unit--a twist of the wrist rotates the unit off its mounting plate, and the battery slips into a carrier that then flips into place to make the proper connection, which is confirmed by a short 'beep' signal. Once the unit is back on its base plate, the red light indicating that the unit is operating properly is easily visible.
This is easily the best smoke detector that I have ever purchased.
- A smoke detector that's easy to use
Up until now I've only lived in houses with the usual smattering of random low-end smoke detectors. This smoke detector puts all of them to shame.
Installation is incredibly easy. The smoke detector separates from the base with a light twist (not the usual yanking or bending that always has me convinced I'm about to break the thing). The mounting base is really light, which is nice when your standing on a chair and pressing it to the ceiling above your head. There are two long channels for placing the two screws that hold it up, which gives you a decent amount of error margin. If you're replacing an existing smoke detector, sometimes you can even use both original holes.
First Alert also put some thought into battery replacement. The battery compartment is a dedicated slot that swings out from the side. It's easy to open and close and keyed so it won't close properly if you put the battery in backwards. Although the battery is a standard 9V, the smoke detector uses pressure clips (like you'd find with AAs) rather than the standard snap-in design which requires more forcing.
The remote silencer/test feature is great. Basically you hold down the volume or channel controls from your TV remote to silence or test the detector. This makes this smoke detector ideal for kitchens and rooms with high ceilings since you can silence it without having to get out a stool.
One drawback of the remote feature is that if you have a bedroom or kitchen with a TV in it, you probably shouldn't buy this smoke detector for that room. Before we installed them, I had the detectors on a side table in the living room and managed to accidentally set off their test modes while using the remote to operate the TV.
If you're buying the smoke detector for use in a house you plan to rent out, you might be concerned that all these convenience features will make it too easy for your tenants to disable the detectors. First Alert solved this problem by providing two locking pins: one for the battery compartment and one for the twist-off base. These pins are installed and removed with a pair of pliers. Of course installing the locking pins makes the smoke detector harder to use.
As one of the other reviewers commented, this smoke detector doesn't look like the picture on this page. Go to First Alert's web site if you want to see an accurate picture....more info
I'm preparing to dispose of my 4th smoke alarm this year. The First Alert SA302 is unreliable. False alarms are common, and I'm tired od waking in the middle of the night. I'll never buy another First Alert product....more info
- Battery "Hog"
We bought this unit because of its dual alarms (photoelectric and ionization) which detect the two fire types: smoldering and flaming. It was installed on the second floor at the top of the stairs, and was sometimes oversensitive and went off during cooking in the first-floor kitchen. Also, we had to frequently replace the 9 volt battery - about every 3 months....more info
- Lithium Battery does NOT last 10 years!
Although the included battery is marketed as a "10 year" battery, we found itlasts less than three years. And the battery has a 10 year warranty which explicitly omits any warranty of battery service life! So the 10 year claim is strictly hype, and misleading....more info

- Great product
This alarm works great. Easy to install. Has a battery door that makes battery change simple. You don't have to take the unit off the wall. Even has a pen to lock the battery door if you don't want anyone removing the battery. Some have complained about false alarms and problems with their TV remote setting off the test mode. I have had no such problems. Never had a false alarm. My unit is down the hall about 10 feet from the living room and the remote has never set it off. That might not be the case if you use it in the same room as the TV. This is probably the best dual sensor alarm available for the money. If you want the most protection, get a dual sensor....more info

- Dual System Smoke Detector
This seems to be an excellent smoke detector based on the design and features
It's rated #1 on consumer sites that I've visted. I like the way it removes from the base to service it and replace batteries. I've only had this for a couple of months so it hasn't had the test of time yet. My old detector was 10 years old and starting to get more false alarms....more info
- No Problems
I bought the unit and installed. The testing with the remote worked very well. I had some concern that my TV remote which is down a hallway about 25 feet may set it off - but it has been no problem
No false alarms....more info
- It may be good for unoccupied spaces
I bought 3 of these via Amazon. Unknown to me, they arrived dirty, with out of date batteries. As a result, they caused many false alarms. We weren't home for the first two, and the neighbors called the fire dept. My advice is to clean them thoroughly per the instructions and discard the batteries that come with them.
They are much too sensitive. They can't be installed near the door to a bathroom in which there is a shower. They can't be installed anywhere in a kitchen. As others have pointed out, they can't be installed in a room in which the TV remote control is used. In my case, the above rules leave only the basement.
In any of the above locations, a fire dept officer told me to use only photocell detectors, not ionization. They are not as sensitive....more info
- First Alert Ultimate Series Smoke Alarm #SA302CN
Overall, it's a very good smoke detector. However, the feature that allows you to test or turn off the smoke detector with your television remote is occasionally annoying. When my husband doesn't aim right at the television with the remote at night, he ends up testing the smoke detector as well as changing the channel on the television. This might not be your best choice for a smoke alarm in a bedroom or a small apartment where the unexpected blaring of a smoke detector might wake everyone up at night when there isn't a fire....more info
- Remote Mute does not work
we replaced our smoke alarm in the kitchen because when I stir fry the alarm would go off. We paid extra for the remote control feature. this feature does not work, even when trying 3-4 different fully-charged remote controls.
