Product Description

In the abstract, there are two Martina McBrides heard in this ample collection, which features 14 hits from the Kansas-born singer's studio albums, along with four inspired new cuts. At one extreme there's the demure cover-girl-pretty warbler who serves up fervent and endearing love pledges like "Wild Angels," "Safe in the Arms of Love," and "I Love You." Then there's the mature, poised, socially conscious mother of two who grapples with darker topics like poverty and inequality ("Love's the Only House") and child and spousal abuse (the wrathful "Independence Day" and the ineffably sad "Concrete Angel"). There are certainly impressive samples of both Martinas on this anthology. On other cuts--like the bluesy, naughty new track "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues" and the angry "Life #9"--the forces of light and darkness, anger and felicity, commingle in a manner that's no less intriguing and provocative. --Bob Allen

If you like Martina's major radio hits then you will enjoy this CD. Highly recommend....more info
  • Awesome Singer....Very Strong Career Material
The country music genre has produced some very talented and strong singers...mainly female. I've never been much of a fan of the men, but the last few decades have seen some powerful divas....Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain and Martina Mcbride. Martina has a set of pipes on her and this GH's shows it...which is probably why for the last two and a half years, it has been a consistent bestseller and has gone triple platinum.

There is not a single bad track on here. Some stand-out more than others, though. The beginning is really well put together offering some of her best tracks right away and hooking you. "My Baby Loves Me, "Independence Day" and "Life #9" are all very catchy...especially "Independence Day" which is arguably her best song. "Strangers" is a gorgeous ballad and has very powerful vocals. "Valentine" is a classic love song and has become a wedding staple. "Concrete Angel" was a huge hit for her in 2003 *I heard it every time i tuned into a country station.* "When God Fearin Women Get the Blues" is bit more rockin and stands out with its amusing lyrics and adds a bit of fun. It's great just to sing along to.

Martina McBride is definitely a rare and underrated talent. She has a very versatile quality to her voice. I bet she could sing any genre she pleases and I'm shocked that she has yet to cross over to pop radio much like Faith and Shania did in the late 90's. It's all good though because Martina really excells at country as this collection displays. I do not care what genre you are a fan of, this is a highly recommended album!...more info

  • Excellent CD
I really like this CD, Martina is one of the few women doing real COUNTRY and WESTERN music out there today instead of pop and bluegrass (How CMT could rank Allison Krauss and Patty Loveless over her I have no idea?). The selections are excellent (Although I think "Keeping My Distance" should have been on it), and I am glad to see some light hearted music on it such as "When God Fearin Women Get The Blues" and "Happy Girl". Country has become much to serious for many people's tastes (I think the artist's pay too much attention to the critics (Toby Keith and George Strait are exceptions)and think everything has has to be different and serious, forgetting that the greats (Such as Patsy Cline and Hank Williams) did light stuff too). This is probably the best single disk greatest hits CD of a current artist you can get (Not up there with Strait Out Of The Box though). So go get this CD, you will like it, and if you listen carefully to her lyrics, you will fall in love with her music....more info
  • Great Voice!
I think that Martina McBride has one of the most under-rated voices out there. Every song on this disc is really great. But "Whatever You Say" and "Where Would You Be" are perfection....more info
  • whatta voice
Martina McBride has to be one of the most powerful voices in the music business. This woman can give me goose bumps because is so awesome! She is labeled as country but anybody that appreciates music and talent will see what I mean. She is right up there with Whitney Houston Celine Dion, Mirah Carey. I don't necessarily like all of their music but you'd have to be a fool not to get chills while listening! Listen to the words, they tell stories, real life, look beyond the music, just listen. Independence Day is one of these songs. If you are skeptical, this would be the album for you to buy. Trust me it's worth it you won't be dissapointed unless you can't appreciate true talent. I think she should sing the national anthem at the superbowl!!!...more info
  • Martina McBride - Greatest Hits
A classic collection of greatest hits from one of country music's greatest singers. I initially gave this album a score of 4.7, but then figured I might as well just round it up to a 5. :-)...more info
  • Fabulous
If you can't regognize her name you will deffinatly recognize the songs she sings once you hear them. Almost all of them are quite famous. I don't really know what else to say about this fabulous cd. It has a rating of 5 stars out of over 100 reviews so it's gotta be good right? It is!! As far as her singing, it's not traditional country it's deffinatly more jumpy jazzy pop. Try it your guaranteed to like it!...more info
  • Matina Is on Fire
When I first heard "Great Hits" in my cousin vehicle I thought that it would be a great cd to buy. It had all her best songs on it that had came out to that date. Martina McBride is one of my favorite artists. She has been singing country or many years. This cd came out in September 18,2001. The cd cost $13.99 on amazon.com. "Greatest Hits" has sold millions of copies to this date.
If you have read what people think about this they like what they hear. Martina writes about what is going on in real life. She has emotional songs and happy songs. I would give this cd 5 start. Concrete Angel is a song that touched my heart every time I listen to it. It is down to earth I could listen to it over and over.
Martina has came out with 7 cd's before this cd. The name of the cd's are, "The Time Has Come", "The Way That I Am", "Wild Angels", "Evolution", "Martina McBride Christmas", Emotion', and "White Christmas". Her last cd that has came out is "Martina". When ever I read reviews from this cd they give it 5 stars once in awhile you will see 4 stars. This album was in the top 50 charts.
When you hear these songs, they say so much. How they talk about parents that have problems. Martina has a beautiful voice and she really uses it in this album. Martina has won 3 best female vocalist awards.
All the songs the cd are amazing. I wouldn't say there isn't a bad one in it. Concrete Angels, Independence, and Wild Angels would be my favorite songs in the album. If I had to pick one song it would be Concrete Angel. This album is the best album I have ever listened to. If I has to spend $15 on an album this would be the cd to buy.
I think country people would love this album. Its kind of a women's cd but men would like it also. Not only country people would like this cd, if you listen to pop this cd would be a good one to buy. Don't worry you wont be disappointed.

  • Martina Is Amazing!
Martina McBride is one of the best vocalists of any genre and country music is very lucky to have her. Her Greatest Hits CD is awesome. There are 17 of her chart hits:
My Baby Loves me, Life #9, Independence Day, Safe In The Arms Of Love, Wild Angels, Valentine, A Broken Wing, Happy Girl, Wrong Again, Whatever You Say, I Love You, Love's The Only House, There You Are, When God Fearin' Women Get The Blues, Where Would You Be, Concrete Angel, and Blessed.
There is also a fan favorite but unreleased song called Strangers and the intro to When God Fearin' Women Get The Blues. Included in the liner notes are Martina and the producer's thoughts and comments on each song. They talk about what they would change, their initial reaction to the demos, etc. This CD is a must-have even if you're not familiar with Martina's music. She is just as good if not better than Whitney Houston. And Mariah Carey's overrated, no good, hoarse singing can't even begin to compare to the passion and range of Martina. Martina McBride's Greatest Hits definitely deserves five stars!...more info
  • A Great Voice and a Great Collection
I have loved McBride for a long time, but never was inspired to buy any of her albums except "Evolution." When I saw she had a greatest hits coming out, however, I knew it would be a must have and I was right. Martina hits every note perfectly and the music is perfect on every track. I won't even do a track by track because they are all wonderful. A country classic....more info
  • Shows why Martina is a Star
This is a great collection of Martina's stuff through 2001. Martina has a powerhouse of a voice. This album was a big part in my coming to accept country singers, instead of just rock or pop. Here are just the best tunes:

My Baby Loves Me - great intro tune, a salute to unconditional love

Life #9 - another high energy hit. Martina tells roaming man he is down to his last chance

Independence Day - stirring song about tragic effects of domestic violence

Safe in the Arms of Love

    Wild Angels

Happy Girl - very fun and energetic song

    Whatever You Say

Love's the Only House - social commentary by Martina

When God Fearing Women Get the Blues - a funny and energetic song about a straight-laced woman who just cuts loose one day

With 19 songs, most of them winners, this CD is a great buy for the fan and an excellent intro to Martina and modern female country for others....more info
  • Greatest Hits it is
there's a huge difference between martina mcbride and the rest of country's female artists(not that i have a problem with them) but the real difference is MARTINA POURS HER SOUL INTO THE SONG SO WELL..alot of the issues she chooses to sing about really are the issues of the world. The song that stands out the most is INDEPENDENCE DAY.such a sad song but beautiful lyrics and it really does touch your heart. Her older hits are magnificent and really are tad mix of country a lil hint of pop(if you will) and it really works for her. This is a cd almost every person should own ITLL SPEAK TO YOU.i luv the new material my favorite song is WHERE WOULD YOU BE its such a beautiful ballad that has martina's voice so strong and with the instruments it just flows THIS SONG SHOULD GET TO U. All the new songs stand out and well do they stand out. The best one is BLESSED. its just so beautiful and really that song must be autobiographical in many ways for her. WHEN GOD FEARIN' WOMEN GET THE BLUES my god it was a huge hit for her. she chooses her music well. The last song i mention from the new ones is CONCRETE ANGEL when u hear it, itll tear u to pieces is how sad the song is.Shes an artist who doesn't ignore the issues of today and the past. GIVE THIS ALBUM A SHOT ULL LOVE IT AND Ull LEARN SOMETHIN NEW..GUARANTEED...more info
  • Concrete Angel: Something Everyone Should Hear
The song 'Concrete Angel' touched me in a way that few songs have; this is a review of that song.

I normally do not listen to country music, but this video was on the TV at the gym one day and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since. 'Concrete Angel' really drives home the horror of child abuse. It has a beautiful melody, but more than that it conveys (as well as a music video can) the situation of so many kids who are in abusive environments.

Since I first heard 'Concrete Angel', I've sampled several of Martina's other songs including 'Independence Day' and have been impressed by her clear vocals and straightforward lyrics. Kudos to Martina for using her venerable vocal talents to address real, tough social issues. I am looking forward to purchasing her 'Greatest Hits'....more info

  • Great songs and an even better voice
This CD is an awesome CD and a great one for women. It is has a song for everything. Martina's voice is awesome and I could listen to it for hours. Each song on this CD promotes how women have power and also independance. My Baby Loves Me talks about how a women does not have to change herself for her man, he loves her just they way she is. One of the songs on the CD that has created controversy is Independance Day. This song talks about domestic violence and createded a lot of drama in the country music industry but it is a great and powerful song. All of the songs on this CD will leave a lasting impression on anyone who listens to this CD...more info
  • CD in a Box
I purchased my copy on sale, the original cost is $3.00 more than the normal non-eco friendly CD with the plastic case. I was dissapointed that it did not have the liner notes and it seems to be just a CD in box...no thrills. Looking back if this was not on sale for $3.00 cheaper than the normal non-eco friendly CD I would have been very disappointed.

  • Career retrospective
It may seem too soon for a GREATEST HITS album from Martina, but the timing is perfect. Martina was an artist, that took a few albums to catch on with listeners. Now she's a powerhouse name in country music. The compilation includes 14 hits, from Wild Angels to Independance Day, Safe In The Arms of Love to I Love You, There You Are to Life #9, and more. It's the perfect album for fans, new and old, alike. There is a generous helping of new material though. The album's first single was the uptempo "When God Fearin Women Get The Blues", which became a #1 smash almost immediately. This was repeated with the reflective uptempo song "Blessed". "Where Would You Be" really pushes her vocals to the extremes, and "Concrete Angel" is a terribly sad song about child abuse. Overall a well rounded collection and the new songs were enough for fans to wait for her newest album MARTINA....more info
  • She knows how to push my buttons (and I don't mind.)
There's something about the material Martina chooses. I have owned this album since shortly after its release. To this day, I can't listen to "Blessed" without feeling the hair go up on the back of my neck. You go, girl!...more info
  • No one like her voice!
There is no one in country music who has a voice like Martina McBride-can hold notes for unbelievable amounts of time, has a crystal pureness, the most powerful voice, yet can emit every emotion known. Worth the buy!!!! Also Shine, her newest album is a must buy!!!! Just listen to "Lies" and you will see why!...more info

  • Fantabulous
I don't usually listen to Country but I heard McBride sing on one f the Country award shows and decided I wanted to hear more. What a pleasure it is to put this disc in the player. It is rare indeed that you find a 19 selection program where you enjoy each and every selection. I am now a fan and Martina goes on my list of really good female singers. Although McBride is catagorized as Country I think her music and style transcends just one catagory and instead encompasses several. This is a perfect way to start your day.

  • A Great Review of Music for Martina
Martina McBride does it again. She starts off with her more upbeat songs, such as "My Baby Loves Me", "Life #9" and as the album progresses so does the variety of her songs. "Whatever You Say" shows her range. Then to "I Love You" where she shows some flare on a pop-influenced song. She then ends the album with some new songs. "Where Would You Be", my personal favorite, shows her range and the purity of her voice. Overall, a great album thats worth buying. This album wont dissapoint....more info
  • Martina's greatest hits
Country music is a genre I usually tend to avoid like the bubonic plague. I find the majority of it annoying to the nth degree. I will though make the rare occasion with Johnny Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kasey Chambers, Lucinda Williams, and Martina McBride. I will admit that at one point I even owned a couple of Martina's cds over the years before my musical tastes evolved into something edgier, darker, and more aggressive.

I recently got a hold of Martina's greatest hits from a several years ago. I almost forgot just how great of a singer she is compared to a lot of female artists nowadays (regardless of genre). I do though wish that "The Time has Come" from Martina's first album was on the album. Other than missing that particular song, I enjoyed listening to Martina's greatest hits especially "Independence Day" which for some ODD reason has kept Martina off some country radio's playlists to this very day. I guess the truth hurts. I am still emotionally moved by the lyrics. I don't know why since I have never been the victim of domestic abuse but the song resonates with me. I also still love "My Baby Loves Me" and "Safe in the Arms of Love" and "Wild Angels". As sappy as "Valentine" is, I actually like the song. Big guilty pleasure with me. A lot of the songs on the cd are new to me. I particularly like "Wrong Again". Great melodies.

What I like about Martina's music is that it is never obnoxiously twangy which is why I hate most country music. Martina really has great taste in picking which songs she will put on her albums. The heartfelt lyrics, catchy melodies, and her powerhouse vocals are an excellent combination. ...more info
