Product Description

Finally the truth about clowns is out! Beneath their smirky sinister grins and wildly patterned clothes are clever killers from out of this world. The "juxtaposition of their toy-store arsenal and malevolent intent proves to be a tasty combination" (Los Angeles Times) in this killer entertainment that will leave you fearing these big-top creatures for good. A spaceshiplooking like a circus tentlands in a field near a small town, signaling the attack of deviant, red-nosed, balloon-twisting psychos from another world who plan to annihilate mankindby turning people into cotton candy! Luckily, the town's teen citizenry decides to fight back and teach the cosmic bozos a lesson. But these klowns are no klutzes, turning popcorn, peanuts and caramel corn into playfulbut deadlyweapons of madcap destruction and mayhem!

What's completely and utterly baffling about Killer Klowns is not the plot--that's rather tidily summed up by the title--but the fact that it got made at all. According to the filmmakers, (the Chiodo brothers: Charles, Edward, and Stephen) all it took to convince the studio was a one-page treatment and a picture of a clown holding a gun. It boggles the mind. Anyway, some killer Klowns descend from outer space and start wrapping their hapless victims in cotton candy for later consumption. Debbie and Mike suspect something's amiss, but who will believe them? The movie's greatest asset is its willingness to play on the inherent creepiness of clowns. The Klowns are grotesque parodies of their big-top cousins, hiding hideous malformed teeth behind terrifying circus makeup. It's impossible to tell if Killer Klowns is truly meant to be scary, but it is compelling in its thoroughness: popcorn, balloon animals, and really big shoes are all used to their fullest effect. The only cast member you'll recognize immediately is veteran character actor John Vernon as Officer Mooney, but keep an eye out for Christopher Titus in a small role as Bob McReed. Then just sit back and stare open-mouthed in bewildered joy. --Ali Davis

  • Not as Good as I Remember
I know there are plenty of people who love this movie and I remember seeing it when I was young. It was not scary then and its not scary now. It is good cheesy fun though with a lot of bad acting and a plot to not even care about. I liked it enough to set through once again in my older years now and I have to say my movie tastes have changed enough to where this movie isn't worth a second watch. Special features aren't great at all even though they are there for people who care. Picture quality is good and so is audio but other than that not much going for it. I know its a cult favorite and that's fine for most fans if you like it that much but its not really going to be for everyone. That is usually the way it goes for cult favorites though it is usually love or hate. When I first saw this movie it was on TV so the formatting issue isn't as important to me as it appears to be to other reviewers (check out the single star reviews.) I suppose it could benefit by letterbox reformatting. As for other "poor" rating reviews, come on, guys--its called KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, not FROM HERE TO ETERNITY.

    Anyway, I liked it.

The movie definitely has all the "B" level hallmarks--less than stellar acting (except by the Klowns who are perfect), a script full of holes, etc. But somehow, the film works almost in spite of itself. The art direction was great, particularly in the use of color--and, again, the look of the Klowns who are perfect. They had huge goofy heads & sets of really nasty looking, evil teeth. • WHAT IF TIM BURTON MADE THE BLOB?! 4 1/2 STARS!
A rare occurrence, when a film this silly turns out to be so great! 'Killer Klowns From Outer Space' is a wonderful homage to the Sci-Fi and monster movies of the 50's. While watching this ultra campy "Cult Classic" you can't help, but think of 'The Blob' film from 1958. The story pretty much follows the same basic story line except no blob, just really sinister looking space klowns!

The clown make-up is fantastic and the sets look like Pee Wee's Playhouse on acid! Clever use of all known Klown props including funny little car, balloon animals, puppets, shadow puppets, popcorn, cotton candy, pie throwing and the big top itself....you name it's in here! Although the Klown make-up is quite creepy, the film is played purely for laughs.

It would have been interesting if this film had a couple of really good scares in it! I think they missed a golden opportunity there.....anyone remember 'Night Of The Creeps'? Another campy Horror comedy from the 80's, but that one had some tension and scares in between the laughs. That is why I deduct half a star. The DVD transfer is excellent and this release has a nice amount of extras including commentary, making of, FX, Klown concepts, trailer, deleted scenes and much more!

Thanks "C" for reminding me to watch this one! Happy Shocktober! ...more info
  • Killer, Yet Campy B-Rated Horror
If anyone tells you that this movie is a scary, or even a grammy winning event, then you've definitely been "clowned" (Sorry for the corny joke...just couldn't help myself on that one). In fact, I'll never forget the weird look my friends gave me when I brought this film over for all of us to watch. But once it got started, none of them could stop laughing.

The movie starts off with your typical, big-haired, tight jean wearing 80s couple lying in their town's local "lover's peak," when a shooting star whizzes past them and lands somewhere nearby. Naturally, the couple just has to go and investigate. What they find is a massive cirus tent swarming with creepy, psychotic alien clowns. After making a narrow escape from almost being shot down by killer popcorn, the couple runs to report the incident to the police, only to find that the clowns have inundated the town and are killing everyone by turning them into giant balls of cotton candy!

I swear the makers of the film have manipulated every clown-related trick known to man. For example, one of the clowns uses a hand-shadow to swallow up a "handful" of unsuspecting people, caustic, lethal pies get thrown, and the clowns even use animal-shaped balloons to murder their victims. Of course, there's the one token black guy in the movie who, surprisingly isn't the first to be killed.

On the other hand, this movie is filled with all sorts of bad, yet darkly hilarious scenes. One of my favorites is when a tiny killer clown comes out of a girl's toilet (if you look closely you can see the hand/arm of the pupeteer holding the clown's head as it rises from the toilet bowl). Of course, the actors and their lines are also less than stellar, which in many ways only helps to make the film even funnier. So if you enjoy fatuous, B-rated horror films, then you should definitely check this out. ...more info
  • SEND IN THE KLOWNS
The circus is in town and not The Ringling Brothers but the Chiodo Brothers the demented ringmasters of this off-the-wall and delightful cone of cotton candy. Every aspect of circus and clown hi-jinks are explored with sometimes hilariously dire results. A shadow image of a dinosaur gobbles up onlookers; cotton candy blood banks where a klown occasionally takes a sip using a crazy straw; bloodhounds crafted from twisted and shaped balloons; killer popcorn;flesh melting cream pies thrown in a security guards face with the heaping mass of cream and bone topped with a cherry and more zany antics too numerous to mention including John Vernon as a human ventriliquest "dummy". This is not a movie to be watched expecting academy award caliber acting but be warned the movie is a dizzy delight and may cause fits of uncontrollable laughter. And a delicously nutty title song from The Dickies kick-starts this carnival of mirth, merriment and campy terror....more info

  • A little boring & slow-paced to be truly good camp
Clearly the creators of this movie were hoping to craft a camp classic, and certainly "Killer Klowns" has all the hallmarks of campiness. Obviously so over the top that it could never possibly be taken seriously, "Killer Klowns" wants to thought of as "so bad it's good," so criticizing the overall awfullness of the movie is really beside the point.

The problem is, the general ineptitude in direction manifests itself in the pacing & editing of the film. The result is something like watching a production of the high school drama club: part of you wants to laugh, but the production has such a combination of earnestness and listlessness that you feel more sorry than anything else towards everyone involved, not to mention a bit bored.

The impact of the truly bizarre nature of the film will have long worn off before "Killer Klowns" trudges towards its uninspired finish. You will have seen all you need to of this film probably in the first 30 minutes, so you can save yourself the trouble of viewing the rest....more info
  • Funny but shouldn't be called horror
I rented this movie for a sleepover party expecting everyone to freak out but it turned out we all giggled our asses off at the terrible effects and cotton candy scene. So that was a little disappointing.

This was made in 1988 so I thought it would be better effects and the killing sequences were terribly done. As you know the people in it are dumb and instead of realizing before that they are bad they have to go up and shake hands and then get killed. And as you know with every movie there is the police station that beleives the kid's are lying about clowns or monsters killing people and then they get killed....more info
  • Invasion Of The Suspender Snappers
Basic Plot: Aliens from outer space come to invade the Earth with diabolical plans. But these aren't normal extraterrestrials. These are space-clowns with one deadly sense of humor! They go around a small town, terrorizing the residents and turning their bodies into cotton candy cocoons. A small group of teens are the only ones willing to accept this crazy situation, and take it upon themselves to rid their town of these murderous bozos. But, of course, that will be easier said than done!

In my opinion, Killer Klowns From Outer Space cannot be mistaken. Whether it's the DVD cover, the tagline ("In Space No One Can Eat Ice Cream"), or the absurd plot, you pretty much know what you're getting into. And I for one enjoyed it. It was everything I'd hoped it would be -- a mix of sci-fi, comedy, and horror that's entertaining from beginning to end. I've seen my share of bad B-movies, and I was prepared for the worst, but instead got a pleasant surprise. Sure, the acting isn't too spiffy, but who cares about the humans? The other-worldly clowns are evilly cool combinations of live actors and mechanical suits. The masks are able to blink, shift their eyebrows, and stretch big nasty smiles across their faces for a delightfully sinister effect. I'll admit it's not completely believable, but it's certainly more than the obvious rubber mask too many movies like this settle with. And with plenty of kooky gadgets and tricks, there are some interesting kills as well. This is rated PG-13, so there's not a lot of gore, but we're still treated to absurdly humorous slaughter throughout the movie. There are too many memorable scenes to mention here, but trust me: Killer Klowns From Outer Space will have any fan of horror-comedies in B-movie heaven. The makers of this flick obviously know how to have a good time, and don't waste any effort on trying to sneak seriousness or morals into the story. Just good 'ol stupid fun! And, with a nice load of special features (including 5 featurettes, audio commentary by the Chiodo Brothers, bloopers, 2 deleted scenes, and more), there's plenty of reasons to purchase this DVD. So what are you waiting for? Step right up and enjoy a funhouse ride that is truly out of this world!...more info

  • A cult classic rarely equaled
A small subgenre of horror films and literature exists in which one overriding principle dominates: clowns are scary. Think about it for a minute. We've got Stephen King's seminal 1986 novel involving a group of kids battling a cosmic evil that disguises itself in the garb of a clown, subsequently turned into a made for television miniseries a few years later starring Tim Curry as the titular grease painted monster. Then there's Victor Salva's low budget shocker, "Clownhouse," about some kids who run into a trio of criminals disguised as clowns. But the best known film involving evil clowns is undoubtedly "Killer Klowns from Outer Space," a movie that seamlessly blends broad comedy with genuine chills and thrills. Personally, I don't find clowns frightening unless you count the time Roger Moore donned floppy footwear and a red nose in one of his Bond films. But I guess I can understand why some would recoil in fear when confronted by large men with white faces and red smiles, especially if you're a three or four year old kid. Anyway, that's enough with the obligatory paragraph in which I attempt to set some sort of context. Let's move on to the review, shall we?

MGM saw fit to release a special edition "Killer Klowns" disc, and it's a good thing they did. This is one fun ride. The movie starts with the arrival of an odd-looking spacecraft, one shaped like a gigantic circus tent of all things, somewhere in small town America. Right from the start we learn that the occupants of this weird craft resemble not at all the touchy-feely sort of extraterrestrial we saw in films like "E.T." These aliens obviously intend to harm any hapless humans with the temerity to investigate the landing of the craft, as evidenced by what happens to a local hick when he takes his dog out to the landing site for a look. Unfortunately, or fortunately considering the outcome of the film, a couple of youngsters also witness the craft arcing through the sky. Enter Mike Tobacco (Grant Cramer) and his girlfriend Debbie Stone (Suzanne Snyder). They were sitting in their car playing tonsil hockey when the spaceship landed nearby. Intrepid Mike immediately wants to investigate, and the reluctant Debbie goes along. The two discover the craft, manage to infiltrate the vessel, and discover a most disturbing find wrapped in what looks like cotton candy. Oh dear. Knowing something is seriously amiss, Mike and Debbie soon find themselves trying to warn the townspeople of the horror from beyond the sky.

Their task faces many difficulties. First, the only allies they can rely on are Rich and Paul Terenzi (Michael Siegel and Peter Licassi respectively), two girl crazy dolts that drive an ice cream truck for a living. Debbie and Mike certainly can't count on the local cops for assistance, at least not initially. The chief of police, Curtis Mooney (John Vernon channeling his Dean Wormer character from "Animal House"), is a hostile man constantly railing against local troublemakers. His main man at the precinct house, Dave Manson (John Allen Nelson), is also unreliable since he once dated Debbie and thus cannot stand Mike's presence. The inability to muster help allows the aliens to sweep into town on a mission of conquest. We soon learn that these extraterrestrials dress and look like clowns, but with a twist. They're hateful creatures with mouths full of nasty looking teeth whose goal involves collecting human beings for food. The aliens use all the clown tricks of the trade--cotton candy, balloons, little cars, shadow puppets, and magic tricks--to capture men, women, and children. Debbie and Mike must avoid the clowns, marshal their forces, and once again penetrate the spaceship in order to save the human race from possible extinction.

"Killer Klowns from Outer Space" works as well as it does by deftly blending humor with horror. The clowns are fun to watch, especially when they're luring human beings to their doom. Imagine popcorn that turns into nasty looking beasties with razor sharp teeth, shadow puppets that can swallow up people, and a biker gang that learns the hard way about messing around with these clowns. Fun stuff, even if none of it is particularly scary. What IS scary, at least in my opinion, are the occasional scenes that really send shivers down the spine. That silent clown and the little girl at the restaurant are deliciously eerie, but even this pales in comparison to what I rank as the best scene in the film. It involves Officer Mooney and a clown, and it's bone-chilling stuff. I still shudder every time I see the film and hear Mooney's voice in this particular scene. Just as effective are the set pieces inside the ship, which look like they cost far more than they probably did. That the makers of the movie, the Chiodo brothers, managed to pull off this unusual blend of horror and comedy on such a meager budget speaks well of their talent.

Since MGM gives us a special edition disc, there are plenty of extras to peruse after the film concludes. We get a commentary track, deleted scenes, a trailer, stills, audition tapes, bloopers, and five featurettes containing behind the scenes footage, interviews with the Chiodo brothers, and lots of other fun stuff. "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" is must see viewing for fans of cult cinema, and it's not a bad choice for general horror fans who relish the idea of seeing some chills balanced with a few laughs. The movie is definitely five star material. I'm hoping against hope that the disc sold well enough to merit a sequel. We'll probably never see a follow up film, but I can hope anyway, can't I?

apalling as the title is, the film lives up to it!

This is trully a tacky B grade horror flick, which combines the theme of a typical B grade horror flick with tasteless acts perpetrated by aliens dressed as klowns.

"Killer Clowns from Outer Space" (1988 - 88 minutes), icon of sci-fi

lands on Earth to spread terror using the most varied circus

make fun and later on to suck the succulent body of the human beings.

  • This Movie Is A Horror Gem!!!(And Ms. Snyder Is HOT Too!!!)
This movie is a Horror Gem and is sadly overlooked by many fans of the genre. A group of Killer Klowns arive from Outer Space and then proceed to kill and maim the inhabitants on Earth. The Klowns in this movie have a SERIOUS "Street Credibility" problem because after all, who is scared of a clown? However as Lon Chaney once said "There is nothing scarier than a clown after midnight" and I agree with that. This movie stars the absolutely GORGEOUS Suzanne Snyder whoi sadly we do not see enough of in film these days....more info

  • Great parody
This movie falls into the cheesy guilty pleasure catagory.
You realize the bad acting and low budget effects should
turn you off, but somehow Killer Klowns with popcorn guns
is simply too much fun to pass up. It starts off with a
old hillbilly(He used to play on the western series Gun
smoke alot) spotting a spaceship and decides to see what's
    going on.

He then naturally becomes the movies first victim. The
main characters are two teens Mike and Debbie. The thing
is that despite being two of the main characters they
add nothing to the film at all. The whole show comes from
the Klowns and they're creative and cheesy ways to kill
off the people put them in the cotton candy cacoons.

This movie is more of a comedy than a horror film as
nothing really is believable. But with the cheesy one
liners totally funny klowns make this movie alot of fun
to watch on a late night. Even better if you are totally
wasted. The only boring parts is all the parts without
the klowns. The best part is the scene with the bikers
and the small klown. If you can't laugh at that you have
no sense of humor at all. The scene with Mooney and the
Klown in the jail is pretty good aswell.

One of the best guilty pleasure movies that you will ever
    see....more info

  • THE QUEEN MOTHER OF ALL CAMPY-CULT FILMS.
'Killer Klowns From Outer Space' is a 1988 movie written, produced, and directed by the Chiodo Brothers. It stars Grant Cramer, Susanne Snyder, John Allen Nelson, and John Vernon.

Our story starts off on a quiet night in the small town of Cresent Crove. After a brief introduction to officer Mooney(Vernon; see if you can spot Christopher Titus), We are introduced to Mike(Cramer)and Debbie(Snyder), two young adults spending time together at the local make-out spot. Their night out is interupted by a giant fireball in the sky. They let their curiosity get the best of them, and decide to investigate. the next cut shows the fireball is actually a spaceship that oddly resembles a circus tent. Unfortunatly, the local town drunk stumbles upon it to a bad consequence. After a quick cut that further introduces Moony and Hanson(Nelson), Mike and Debbie have found the ship(tent). Again they let their curiosity get the better of them, and they learn the terrible truth; A spaceship full of aliens that resemble clowns has landed to harvest humans as food!!

What can I say, I like off-beat humor, and this movie has LOADS of it!! Cult films span all types of genres; When it comes to horror/comedy this film is on par with 'Dead Alive' and 'The Evil Dead II'. The plot is obviously straight forward, and is meant in a satyrical way.

The acting and dialoge is just awesomely bad!! It's acted and played rather serious, but is balanced really well with the ridiculuos plot. The contrast in the serious acting and goofy plot will have you grinning in the first ten minutes! Even today, most of the actors remain obscure, but play the parts ssssoooo well!

The editing is good. The movie runs 86 minutes and never drags. The 'Klowns' are breifly shown in the beggining and as the movie progresses, we see more of the klowns and their anticts. The film has an escalating tension(reletively speaking). In the beggining, see little of the klowns, but the movie progresses to show the full human harvest.

The cinematography is suprisingly great for a low-budjet flick. The movie is really sharp and doesn't suffer from the 'gritty' look, and even the shots at night are clear and lit well.

The effects are sssssooooo great, and compliment the movie sssooo well. The klowns themselves to look quite bizarre; kind of a schizophrenic, distorted, scarier version of circus clowns. The klowns look so twisted they would fit nicely in a 'Silent Hill' game. Toy ray-guns, shadow puppets, balloon dogs, and cotton candy coccoons are some of the unique, and silly instruments of genocide. Don't let the goofiness fool you, this movie does have its fair share of blood and disturbing imagery(It's killer klowns after all).

The DVD comes with some cool extras. Deleted scenes, commentary, 5 featurettes, and two easter-eggs(the popcorn in the special features sub-menu)are included with the DVD.

I was 14 when I first saw this, and all these years later, this movie still makes me giggle. I still watch it and find LOADS of entertainment value in it. If you like horror/cult-comedies, then this is a MUST HAVE!!...more info
  • Wild ride of campy fun
Ok this is the disclaimer: For B movie lovers this is easily a 4 star film for the film lovers that want quality and enormous budgets it is a 2 star film.

Why the disclaimer because this movie is by far not a GREAT movie but is great at being ridiculous, laughable and completely over the top and like no movie ever made.

Aliens crash land on earth to collect humans for their inquenchable thirst of blood. Soon the town is being told of the strange aliens that have landed and they are being described as Klowns. It doesn't take long and the Klowns are in town creating havoc in a circus variety way. Typical horror movie fair the resistance begins against these Klowns from another world. You get the idea.

"B" movie lovers will have to have this as part of their collection because of the many gags that are pulled off in this film. Such as wrapping people in cotton candy cocoons, drinking their blood with silly straws, shadow puppets that kill, pies in the face that kill you, and a space ship in the form of a circus tent. These are just some of the many strange killing devices in this insane movie.

The more "normal"(I am the abnormal which love ridiculous cinema) movie lover may want to rent this first and see if it a film of their liking, because the plot is fluid but clowns killing people in zany ways may not be your ideal movie experience. Normal movie fan you have been warned, but I do encourage everyone to see it at least once to say you have had the "experience". B movie or campy classic lover BUY IT NOW for this price it needs to be in your librairy right next to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and Gymkata. ...more info
  • THE BEST MOVIE TITLE EVER!
As a child of the 80's, I loved this movie. Every time it came on tv, I was mesmerized. But over time I had completely forgotten about it. Then I came across it at Blockbuster and rented it just for some nostaliga. I was instantly back in love with it and my 8 yr old daughter is now obessed with it. Over the couple of days we had it, she watched it probably 20 times. She even drew pictures of scenes from the movie. The title is the plot of the movie. These very creepy clowns land on earth in their circus tent spaceship and run amok in town. Using their cotton candy ray guns to spin unspecting townspeople up in cocoons or trapping them in giant balloons. It's up to Dave, Debbie and Mike to save the town. The only actor in the movie that I recognize is the actor who plays Dave the cop, he played Hunk Golden in another great bad 80's movie "HUNK."
Another thing that I like about this movie is that it's creepy, weird and funny but it's not the typcal horror movie. There almost no blood, no nudity or sex and there's no brutal violence, it's more of a comedic Beetlejuice violence which was more suitable for older children to enjoy as well. ...more info
  • I enjoyed this film....
When I first saw this film at 13, I really enjoyed it, very cheesy but still enjoyable. The special f/x were simpler than they looked.
I'm 27 now, still like it.
At 13, most of my friends missed the point, not realizing there wasn't one. My friends now, some get it and some don't, I don't expect everyone to like it, but I'm impressed that so many here did. I too found the music video pretty funny but it's not on the DVD, oh well.
I heard the commentary, a sequel is being considered, but to me this film should be left alone, Lost Boys doesn't need one either-but it's getting one! If Joel Schumacher has a hand in it, I'll consider it, otherwise I'm skipping it.
My question is, what else can they do with Killer Klowns, unless they're gonna modernize it, which could work....more info

  • Kampy Killer Klowns that drool low budget
The movie starts out in the typical 1980's fashion. Bad music highlighted with make out sessions in the woods, geeks with coke bottle glasses and lots of cheap beer. At first you'd think this is the run of the mill type B-Movie, that is until the klowns land in their circus tent spaceship. Curious people cannot seem to resist the colourful tent in the middle of nowhere. Once the klowns get bored of the woods, they wreck havoc on the bewildered towns folk. The klowns are somewhat clumbsy and oversized, but pack a lot of killer gags. How can one resist pies that melt people to the bone, popcorn that borns little klowns, colourful toy laser guns that kill or shadow puppets that can eat groups of unsuspecting people? Want more, how about really bad acting, sub par script, super low budget sets with even super lower effects and scary looking klowns with sharp rotten teeth. Even better yet, it all seems to work in this campy and cheesey cult classic....more info

My sister and I caught this on TV once and had to watch the whole thing. If you like "campy" movies especially cheesy horror flicks this is the one for you! I especially like the cotton candy coocoons and the attack-popcorn that the Klowns have at their arsenal. Good for Halloween or anytime you want a laugh!...more info
  • When I was a kid....
I remember watching this movie as a kid, and it literally scared the crap out of me! I saw it on tv recently, and I realized how dumb I was for freaking out about a comedy... LOL. This movie is pretty funny though (now that I've seen it as an adult)....more info
  • Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Very imaginative and creative effect for aliens from outer space. I just thought the begining of the movie was too redundant of other typical movies....more info
  • This is a very strange and funny movie
This is an original horror-comedy. Obviously, it involves alien clowns invading the city. It's unfortunate that modern horror-comedies couldn't be as funny as this....more info
