  • Not exactly a time machine, but close enough
Let's face it. Captain and Tennille songs were heard mainly on AM radio in the mid-70s. Because of that, the suped-up digitally clear remasterings of classics like "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" may not match up with your school age memories of these songs. It's a different experience. Nevertheless, this collection shows that the squeeky clean pop duo deserved its fame in its day. Tennille's strong alto vocals, the spritely backup vocals and the infectious Neil Sedaka melodies are simply irresistable. I prefer the funkier songs like "You Never Done It Like That." Half the songs are tributes to Darryl Dragon's performance as a lover. No wonder he looks basically the same after all these years....more info
  • fine album by Captain & Tennille--even if a track or two are missing...
Captain & Tennille's Ultimate Collection: The Complete Hits really does a great job of giving us the very best (or almost all of the very best) by Captain & Tennille on just a single CD. The sound quality is awesome and the artwork is very nicely done. Oh, by the way, Captain & Tennille are really named Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille.

"Love Will Keep Us Together" starts the album with Captain & Tennille doing their trademark soft rock/70's pop style love song. They sing and play this very well; and it always brings back great memories for me. "The Way I Want To Touch You" is a softer rock/pop tune that features this duo singing and playing their hearts out. Toni Tennille sings passionately and she never misses a beat. You also get the feeling that she really is "into" the song; it's just something you can sense when you hear this number. Moreover, "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" is an excellent example of how well they could incorporate rock into a pop ballad and make it all come out so remarkably well. "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" played so frequently on the radio when I was a kid that I can't help thinking of junior high school years whenever I hear this torch song.

"Shop Around" has a great backup chorus to enhance the performance; "Shop Around" is a great cover that easily rivals the original version from the 1960s. The drums, percussion and guitar all work together to make "Shop Around" one of the very best hits ever for Captain & Tennille.

"Muskrat Love" is cute although it can strikes me as a bit silly. On the other hand, listen for the very touching "Come In From The Rain." This gets the royal treatment and I love every minute of this ballad. Toni Tennille sings this with all her heart and soul; this always tugs hard at my heartstrings whenever I hear it. "You Never Done It Like That" has a cool rockin' sound that is practically irresistible; and I also really like the highly romantic "Do That To Me One More Time." The flute on "Do That To Me One More Time" fits in just right!

"We Never Really Say Goodbye" is a ballad I am less familiar with; but I like it very much. The lush musical arrangement complements Toni Tennille's vocals very well. The album then ends with Captain & Tennille performing "Por Amor Viviremos;" this Spanish rendition of "Love Will Keep Us Together" is completely new to me but I love it very much. I always like Spanish music!

This is an excellent CD for people who love Captain & Tennille. I highly recommend this CD for people who enjoy great music from the `70s, too.

  • Complete hits, if not ultimate
This is the first domestic comprehensive gathering of all the top-100 hits of this versatile and more talented duo of the pop/rock era. This disc does what it claims - gathers up all the hits (A&M and Casablanca)- and throws in a few better-known album cuts for good measure. Something of note since many compilation CDs put out by the record companies don't live up to the promise. Lots of great original hit tunes here along with some very exceptional performances ("Circles", "Wedding Song", et al) that did not wind up on the charts. Sound quality is very good overall with all tracks in stereo. Includes a 16-page booklet with backround notes, pics and track details. The best single-disc collection yet available for this remarkable pair....more info

  • The Captain and Tennille
Both my wife and I love the music in this CD. We both remember seeing them on various variety TV shows in the 1970s. It's an excellent CD!...more info
  • THE AMAZING CAPTAIN AND TONI TENNILLE
I can honestly say that I have been a Captain and Tennille fan ever since "Love Will Keep Us Together", exploded on the charts in 1975. Most people don't know it stayed on the charts for nearly six months and was done by the same artists in Spanish, making Love Will Keep Us Together doubly loved by Captain and Tennille fans, being that while the English version was already topping the charts, the Spanish version "Por Amor Viviremos" was climbing the ladder not far behind, Making the Captain and Tennille the first duo ever to have two versions of a number one song on the charts at the same time in Billboard history. Every song on the greatest hit album has been digitally remastered and the sound is incredible. Some of the artists greatest achievements are included on this album, including "Lonely Night" (angel face), "Shop Around" (a great rendition taken from popular artist Smokey Robinson), Captain and Tennille's version is a more streamlined version and is sung from a womans point of view. Toni Tennille has given her all in all of these songs and shines at the pinnacle of her career. This is a great album, no Captain and Tennille fan should be without.!!!....more info
  • It's All Here...
Ignore the naysayers. This is an enjoyable collection. Yes, everything from the original "greatest hits" album is here, but who would have thought you would ever find "You Never Done It Like That" or "You Need A Woman Tonight" again? And "Do That To Me One More Time" is perfect for slow dancing with your partner (trust me). A welcomed and long-overdue collection....more info
  • The Ultimate Collection You Should Own
I have been a Captain and Tennille listener for over 25 years now dating back to 1975. I have attended many of their shows and have also held a special place in my heart for their music and philosphy. They are simply irresistable and likeable.

I have always hoped that one day we may get their entire collection of music released on compact disc. Over the past 10 years most of their music has reemerged though mostly on Japanese imports of their A&M years. I hope that one day the "Make Your Move" and Keeping Our Love Warm" albums will be released on CD. Even if they were on one compact disc. These albums displayed a new attitude and different music style that the Captain & Tennille displayed during the 1970's. It reflected an adult oriented sound and most of this music still sounds current today.

This collection captures the image and sound of the Captain & Tennille. I recommend this collection over the 1977 Greatest Hits collection which I feel was issued too soon into their career. The "Ultimate Collection contains some songs that are truly lost gems such as "Song of Joy", "I'm On My Way", "Love on A Shoestring" and "Keeping Our Love Warm".

I give this a 5 star review because it is beautifully packaged although it contains a discrepancy regarding the song "Don't Forget Me" in the liner notes. This song was never released as a single. Ironically, the song still didn't make it into this collection. The song that should have been included was "This Is Not The First Time" that was written by Toni Tennille and issued as a single back in the fall of 1980. It was originally written for Cher as was several other songs on the "Keeping Our Love Warm" album. Toni remarked at the time that Cher turned down the song "This Is Not The First Time" because it wasn't "rock enough" If you ever have an opportunity to listen to this track you will definately hear a very rock oriented sound from the Captain and Tennille. I wish that this track was included because then it would have been completely "ultimate".

A couple of my other favorite songs that never made it onto CD are: "Never Make A Move Too Soon", "Since I Fell For You" and "Your Good Thing (Is About to End)" The ultimate collection could have displayed one more track in honor of Daryl Dragon, which should have been "Song For My Father". It is perhaps his best solo work on the Captain and Tennille albums and unfortunately is another lost gem.

Enjoy this collection and share it with some friends. It will bring back fond memories and great conversation. If you ever get the chance to see the Captain and Tennille/Toni Tennille live in concert make sure you see them. They are a class act!...more info

  • Need to Hear More
Hello, and thank you for your time.
It's really hard to get the gist of the song,
with such a small amount of it being played.
I would suggest at least one (1) minute.
Again, thank you for your time, and please
    consider it.

    Sincerely
    Preston R. Thurman...more info

  • Beyond Cheese
I purchased this during a momentary lapse into maudlin nostalgia, thinking it would be a laugh to hear the occasional track as a respite from my usual musical diet of tech house, JapPop, contemporary classical and bleeps'n'glitches. Although there are some tracks on this collection I could easily live without (mostly the formulaic ballads), and will probably never listen to, the highlights are really outstanding examples of MOR: "Love Will Keep Us Together"! Within the first four bars I was laughing with joy! "Shop Around": ok, Smokey Robinson probably did the better version, but C&T also make it their own. And despite the icky heterosexist sentiment, "Wedding Song" has a truly beautiful melody. For me the highlight has to be "You Never Done It Like That": the simplest of riffs climaxing in the most spectacular manner (the shimmering keyboards conjure images of shooting stars) within three minutes! Like the best pop songs, it leaves you wanting to hear it again and again.
The sound quality is also good, apparently 24-bit remastered from the original tapes.
If you're not familiar with C&T but appreciate friendly, well crafted, middle of the road pop, you could make worse decisions than buying this. Although I haven't really changed my mind about listening to just the occasional track, the ones I love are really special....more info

  • Better Live
Having seen them live years ago I was a little disappointed in the cd. On stage they were fun to watch.

When I lived in Akron, they were played on 'oldies' radio all the time, now I live here in Memphis I had to go out and buy this cd in order to hear them at all.

Would I recommend this cd? Yes, it's fine. Live was better!...more info

  • Almost the ultimate...
This collection is well mastered, and an excellent overview of this duo's recording career. I am disappointed by the exclusion of the single "This is Not the First Time" ("Gentle Stranger," which is on the collection, was was its B-side -- the liner notes are incorrect on that), and the failure to include any tracks from their Australian-only album "More Than Dancing" or their ultra-rare charity single "Tahoe Snow." Still, it's easily the best Captain & Tennille collection out there. If you only buy one, this is the one to get!...more info
  • Not again.
Well, the labels did it again. First, when they released the album "Dream" on cd. Their biggest hit from that album "You never done it like that" turned out to be a re-recorded version on the cd release.
They did it again with this "Ultimate Collection." That being said, I love some of their other hits, especially "The way that I want to touch you." Luckily, the rest of the tracks are the originals. If you're looking for the original version of "You never done it like that", you would have to get the 20th Century Masters collection of theirs....more info
  • It was OK
I love the Carpenters, but this Cd has some tracks that for me had too much instrumental in the foreground that drowned out the singer. To me it was not balanced well enough to hear Toni's voice and words of song-on some of songs....more info
