Product Description

Use the power of your microwave to thoroughly sterilize infant feeding accessories in just four to six minutes. The rack holds up to four Avent Bottles or the Isis Breast Pump and its accessories (sold separately), plus microwave-safe plastic feeding utensils. Includes two 9-ounce Avent Reusable Bottles.

Sterilize six baby bottles in just two minutes: imagine what our grandparents would say! The Avent Express II Microwave Sterilizer is a modern-day technological wonder…and a joy for most parents, who will do anything for a little peace of mind and a few extra minutes to spare. Using a regular kitchen microwave, this lightweight sterilizer eliminates household bacteria and keeps contents sterile for up to 24 hours. It can be used to sterilize Avent feeding bottles of varying sizes (and their nipples, rings, and dome caps), Avent Isis breast pump accessories, Via cups and lids, Via Disposable Nursers, and other non-electrical Avent products. Its compact size and ease of use make the sterilizer perfect for traveling, too.

Protect Your Baby from Bacteria
The Avent Express II Microwave Sterilizer effectively and quickly kills the kind of household bacteria that can wreak havoc on babies' delicate new systems. Establishing a routine of washing bottles and pump supplies in gentle, soapy water, then sterilizing them, will ensure that baby will have a clean start in life.

No More Pots and Pans and Boiling Water
The Avent Express is simplicity itself once you get the hang of it. After reading the detailed instructions with great care (assembly and loading are not completely intuitive, and there are important details that can make all the difference in safety and effectiveness of the sterilizer), pour the correct amount of water into the base. Load the pre-washed bottles and feeding components into the appropriate spots in the plastic rack, position the lid over the sterilizer base and lock the clips into place. (You'll hear a click.) Place the sterilizer in the center of the microwave, and select microwave wattage and timings (a chart is included to determine proper wattage and time). Allow the unit to cool for at least two minutes before removing the sterilizer from the microwave. Use the safety grips on the base—they stay cooler to ensure safer handling. If you don't remove the lid, the contents will stay sterile for up to 24 hours.

Care and Cleaning
The all-plastic sterilizer is dishwasher safe. Always drain the excess water from the unit and rinse to prevent the build-up of limescale. Always store when the unit is completely dry.

What's in the Box
The Avent Express II Microwave Sterilizer consists of a sturdy plastic base (11 inches in diameter) with safety grips; a bottle/accessory rack with dome cap stem, bottle cavity, nipple cavity, and Isis Breast Pump slots; and a lid with locking clips. It can be used with most standard microwaves with wattage range from 500 to 1,850 watts. The box also contains two nine-ounce Avent bottles with their rings, nipples, and dome caps, as well as a detailed and illustrated instruction manual.

Note: When taking the sterilizer out of the microwave, use great caution! It will still be hot, as will be the contents. When removing the lid, point it away from you to allow the steam to escape. Follow loading, assembling, and care instructions meticulously. --Emilie Coulter

Harnessing the speed and convenience of your kitchen microwave, this Express Microwave Steam Sterilizer will save parents valuable time during bottle cleaning and preparation. The all-plastic sterilizer--which comes with two 9-ounce Avent bottles, including rings, nipples, and covers--can hold up to four Avent bottles and accessories and is small enough (10.75 inches in diameter) to fit easily into most medium-size microwaves. The sterilizer includes a specially designed rack that will hold the bottles, along with an Isis breast pump (not included). The easy-to-use Express Microwave Steam Sterilizer can sterilize your bottles and pump equipment in as little as four minutes, and it will keep its contents sterile for up to three hours if it is kept closed. --Chris Burns

Customer Reviews:

  • Still Great Even with Latest Improvements
We initially bought this sterilizer for use with our first child born in 2005. I loved it then, but I'm even more impressed with some updated details in the version we just bought for our second child. Before, putting on and removing the lid used to be a bit awkward. Now, easy-to-use latches have made doing both completely hassle-free. The inner steam tray also has more slots and spots that make arranging items easier. The older version was very similar but did not have specialized "compartments" to such an extent. All in all, it remains an extremely easy product to use because if I had to sit there sterilizing by boiling water and whatnot, it surely would not get done. That the sterilizer comes with bottles is pure bonus. I'd buy the steamer alone....more info
  • Convenient, Effective, and Saves Time
We use this product about 5 times a day to sterilize bottles, pacifiers, and all the other feeding apparatus a baby needs.

We started out using a boiling a pot of water, and that was dangerous (boiling water splashes), time consuming, and could not be left unattended. With this steamer, just drop in the items to sterilize, add a bit of water, press the microwave start button, and walk away. Couldn't be easier.

Additionally, steam is hotter than boiling water, so not only is this more convenient, it's more effective.

A product used this much (5 times a day), at such a modest cost, is a no brainer purchase.

    In summary, this unit is:

    - Safer
    - Easy to use
    - Saves time
    - More effective

  • The best EVER!
Can't live without it! This item is so unbelievably easy to use. I recommend this item to any parent that wants to save time or use their time doing something else, which is everyone! 2 minutes and you're done....more info
  • Great sterilizer
I love this sterilizer. It is very quick and completely uncomplicated. In 5 minutes I can sterilize bottles. The Avent bottles fit perfectly. I now use the Dr. Brown's bottles and just have to lay them on their sides. Obviously the sterilizer is using steam and is incredible hot when it first comes out of the microwave. I ususally let it sit for about 3 minutes or so before removing the bottles. ...more info
  • Sterilizer vs. Dishwasher
In reading the reviews from those who feel that a dishwasher works just as well as this sterilizer, I wanted to add my view. I live in an area where water is expensive. We ration water during the summer and have set schedules of when we can water our yards or wash our cars, etc. So running the dishwasher vs. using 7 ounces of water to sterilize my bottles is a no-brainer.

We were using the Medela steam bags before I found this, which only steam 2 bottles at most at a time. Then I couldn't find any replacement bags, and they are supposed to only be good for a limited amount of uses.

I have gotten a lot of use out of this sterilizer and I like its convenience. We didn't start out with a lot of bottles, and this was perfect because I could have new bottles ready in minutes.

Steam does stay in the bottles afterward, but we air them out for several minutes and it dissipates quickly.

  • Great for Those Without Dishwashers!
I am one of those without a dishwasher, unfortunately. I use this sterilizer a few times a day for my baby's bottles and parts. I don't use Avent bottles - works fine with other bottles. I have to agree about making sure it's shut/snapped properly. You have to make sure it's just right before you snap -- otherwise, you will break a nail or two. Also exercise caution when taking it out of the microwave. I always use an oven mitt to take it out and when opening the lid to avoid steam burns. ...more info
  • An absolutely wonderful item to have!!
This sterilizer is so easy to use. I just wash my bottles, put them in the microwave in the sterilizer and walk away. It is one of the most useful items that I have had since my baby was born. I definitely recommend buying it....more info
  • Quick and easy sterilizer
This sterilizer only takes 4 minutes in the microwave. I recommend using distilled water for the best results and to keep the unit and bottles free of limescale....more info
  • AWESOME
It takes 4 minutes to sterilize lots of bottles, nipples, passifiers and even some toys. Very useful for busy moms with no time to be boiling water. Just be careful with the steam when you open it....more info
  • I am happy with this product
I am a first-time mom -have a precious baby girl who is 3 months old now. From day one I've been using the Avent Express II Steam Sterilizer which is similar to the Philips Avent Express but it is bigger; and I am very happy with my purchase. I use it to sterilize not only bottles, nipples, pacifiers, etc., but also for my breast-pump items and it works very good. It is easy to use, clean, not heavy, it does the job real quick and only uses 200 ml of water to steam sterilize things. As other reviewers have pointed out, I have also read that as long as the baby is full term it is not necessary to sterilize bottles etc- the dishwasher does the job. However, if you are a working mom -as I am, with little time to cook and are not using the dishwasher frequently, It is faster and cheaper to use the Avent Sterilizer than the dishwasher -you save money on energy, water and also save time. ...more info
  • Useful product
I was told that I could wash our baby bottles in our dishwasher and I would not need a sterilizer. BUT we live in post housing on an Army base and our dishwasher is awful and hardly gets anything clean. So I handwash all my bottles and bought this as an extra step to help me get them clean enough for my child.

I really like this product a lot. It is very easy to use and since I am using Avent products and an Avent manual pump, everything fits great in this sterilizer. I can even pop pacifiers in there when they fall on the floor. There are slots for basically everything and it all stays put when I am moving it around.

I know that it isn't really necessary, but I like using it for that extra peace of mind that my baby is getting CLEAN bottles. Every parent has different 'must haves' when they have babies and this is one of mine! :)...more info
  • Expensive, troublesome...
Good concept for a steamer, but here is what I've found:

    1. Lid is very difficult to put on and remove. I've broken a few nails trying to pry the lid off!
    2. All items must be dried after steaming.
    3. Only holds a few bottles at a time - a hassle when a newbown eats 10 times daily!
    4. A dishwaher works just as well (since all bottles and nipples have to be washed before you steam them anyway).

Now I wash everything in the diswasher then boil everything once a week. Boiling bottles and nipples takes the same amount of time (around 5 minutes), and once the items are drained, they seem to dry much faster because the hot water evaporates so quickly. Also, maybe it's psychological, but I feel like the bottles/nipples are much cleaner after I boil them! ...more info
  • WONDERFUL PRODUCT
The great thing about this is that you can walk away form it withou fear of burning the kitchen down. With my previous two children constantly demanding my attention, it was hard to keep with the whole soak, wash, boil thing. Once I discovered this product, I was overjoyed. It is reliable and durable. It gets everything clean and sanitary. I have never ahd a problem with it.

I bought the first one about five to six years ago and gace it away when I thought it was no longer needed. Now, I have one for my one-year-old. It is in such good condition that I feel compelled to pass it on to another mom how may need it. Whenever anyone I know puts it on their registry I immediately have it sent to them. This a great value and a true help to a weary, cautious mother. ...more info
  • good products did not receive bottles
This product is great was very disappointed that the two bottles as stated were not included. had I known I would have ordered the bottles at the same time. Am not sure if the was an error in the shipping but no bottles came with my purchase ...more info
  • Awesome Product!!!!
This product has been such a great relief knowing that her bottles and nipples are sterilized. Also if her pacifer drops on the ground I know I can wash it with soap and water then pop it in the sterilizer and know it is ready for use. Not only do I use if for bottles and nipples I like to use it for pacifers and anything plastic that she puts into her mouth. Great it only takes 2 mins for bottles, nipples, etc to be sterilized. Would recommend to new parents who are concerned about all the germs your child can be exposed to. We absolutely love this product and would highly recommend it. ...more info
  • Saves time, money and energy
This is a fantastic gadget. It can be used with most types of bottles, pacifiers, teething, breast pumps.

Like other reviewers we do have a dishwasher and that probably would suffice for sterilizing or at least getting clean enough. The microwave sterlizer saves us waiting 50 plus minutes for our dishwasher to run, it has meant that we don't have to run half empty loads just to get half a dozen clean bottles. Clearly far more energy efficient to nuke the sterilizer for 2 minutes than to use water/detergent/electricity to run the dishwasher.

We hand wash our bottles, breast pump etc then load up the steriliser.

Incidentally our arrived with two 9oz bottles inside the box, making it a little better value than we anticipated....more info
  • convenient for non-dishwasher users
I never use my dishwasher (I hand wash everything), so this sterilizer was really convenient and practical for my pre-mature baby. The only problem I had was that 1 of the bottles got partially melted, and that was on about the 10th use of the sterilizer. I haven't had any other difficulties since then, and that's even with laying my Dr. Brown's long & skinny bottles on their sides (I don't sterilize the inner tubing though, just in case)....more info
  • Very convenient
I use this at least twice a day to sterilize my avent pump and storage bottles. It is fast and easy and I can't imagine going back to boiling bottles again. A must have for working moms....more info
  • Quick & Perfect for Avent system
I absolutlely love this sterilizer. I have an Avent breast pump and newborn feeding set, and this sterilizer integrates perfectly. The tray has cutouts for bottles, nipples, rings, dome caps and breast pump parts. Quick, easy and a necessity for those who need a quick sterilizer. I also love the fact that it matches the whole Avent feeding system. I don't know if the tray will accomodate another manufacturer's bottles or breast pump parts.

It's not necessary to have a sterilizer, but it is convenient if you do not always run the dishwasher or want to wait for a load to complete....more info
  • Love it! Use it everyday for everything!
I initially got this for daily sterilization of my pump parts but I throw everything into it- bottles, nipples, and pacifiers! It's so quick and easy. You can fit a lot in one go. I keep it in my pantry so it is always near the microwave! ...more info
  • Great product but 12 oz bottles does not fit
This is a great product, unfortunately, after my son moved to 12 oz bottles, I realized that I cannot fit them in this sterilizer. Other than that, it's really easy to use, a great life saver. It would've been a nightmare to boil the bottles to disinfect them. Just be careful with some pacifier parts. One of my baby's pacifier holder attachment ended up melting during sterilizing. Not everything is meant to be in this sterilizer. ...more info
  • Met all expectations!
I brought this item to Prague for use with our new grandson. It was found to be convenient and efficient....more info
  • Handy
The Advent sterilizer is great! We have a dishwasher, but we use the sterilizer a lot. It is helpful when there aren't enough dishes in the machine to run a full load and you need a clean bottle quick! Plus, our dishwasher tends to leave some sediment on the bottle nipples, so I trust the sterilizer more. This sterilizer is a must if you are pumping and have all that equipment to clean every day. If you get this sterilizer, you will use it all the time. I know we sure have! ...more info
  • Affordable sterilizer created in partnership by Philips and Avent
    MODEL SELECTION:

There are two microwave sterilizer models marketed by Philips/Avent. The first is the SCF271/07 (ASIN B001C3KXPG) and the second is the SCF271/02 (ASIN B000056OUH). BOTH actually contain the basic Express II Microwave Steam Sterilizer which holds up to six (6) bottles or a combination of other items including microwaveable breast pumps, cups, etc.

The only difference is that the SCF271/02 contains an ADDITIONAL two (2) of the 9oz/260ml Airflex Natural Feeding Bottle and Nippple.

Strangely enough as of this writing, Amazon is selling the SCF271/02 (the one that contains two extra feeding bottles) for a much lower price than the SCF271/07. So until prices remain like this, know what you are buying and consider it a bonus to have the two extra bottles.

TO STERILIZE OR NOT TO STERILIZE...WITH THIS MICROWAVE STERILIZER:

The argument is not whether you should sterilize your baby products (or expose the baby to germs as argument in strengthening the immune system) because if you're searching for a sterilizer and reached this page, then I'm going to assume you agree with the sterilization process.

The other argument in question is whether you are content with using hot running water and anti-bacterial soap or running a dishwasher and if these steps alone are enough to sterilize. Well it doesn't help to take an extra step to go thru a short few minutes in the microwave. Again, if you're in this page then you've come to accept that this sterilization process is worth the extra caution.

HOW MANY MINUTES IN THE MICROWAVE AT FULL POWER AND 200ml OF WATER?

    2 MINUTES @ 1,100 - 1,850W, 2 MINUTES COOLDOWN
    4 MINUTES @ 850 - 1,000W, 2 MINUTES COOLDOWN
    6 MINUTES @ 500 - 800W, 2 MINUTES COOLDOWN

I'm restating these from the manual because it's important to ensure proper use. Too little water and you can end up damaging the sterilizer. Too much water and you fail to properly sterilize.

Check to see the wattage of your microwave. The model number is usually a giveaway on this.

How much is 200ml? Your baby bottle should give you that info.

Also remember to allow 2 minutes cooling time prior to unlocking the lid unless you want to be greeted with hot steam on your face and second degree burn or worse.

HOW LONG WILL IT REMAIN STERILE?

The manual further states that the items will remain sterile for 24 hours PROVIDED THE LID IS NOT REMOVED. So yes you can sterilize in advance and leave it inside until you need it for the day.

    COMMENTS:

Avent and Philips have consistently provided quality plastic products. The look and feel is what I have come to expect. It is well made and there are no rough edges or protruding plastic parts that may have not been molded properly.

The manual will tell you how to position the items in the sterilizer versus simply dumping them in. The point of the sterilizer is to allow hot steam to circulate around. So incorrect position may mean not creating a good sterilization process.

When all is said and done, this is a simple sterilizer you put in the microwave. For the low cost it is offered, it's a small price to pay for extra security for your baby. Follow the included instructions and enjoy....more info
  • Bottles suck, sterilizer good.
Bottles are leaky even when properly assembled and flow way too fast for 3 month old. Sterilizer is good. Convenient and works well with Avent products. ...more info
  • Very Convenient.
We have a dishwasher and had a full term very healthy child, and still used this product. Lids and nipples tend to turn up in the dishwasher and retain water, and sediment..so what is point if I have to just rewash them?
This sterilizer holds 6 bottles, nipples, tops, and pacifiers all at the same time. You can put breast pump parts in it, and anything else that you need to sterilize. I washed everything, filled this with the items and water, and popped it in at 6 minutes in our microwave to have perfectly clean and sterilized bottles, pacifiers, or breast pump parts. I used this everyday until my son was 6 months old, when we stopped sterilizing bottles. Its easy, safe, convenient, and fast....more info

  • Great Item... but necessary?
Perfect for breast pump accessories. IF YOU ARE BREAST FEEDING AND/OR PUMPING, YOU NEED SOMETHING LIKE THIS to clean all those pesky little teeny/awkward accessories. But beyond that (as far as baby's bottles and bottle accessories/pieces, pacifiers, small plastic toys, etc.) if you have a dishwasher it probably has an optional steam-dry cycle that works just the same as this microwave steam sterilizer....more info
