  • ASTOUNDINGLY CHEAP! BUY SOMETHING BETTER!!!
Wow, I was very very very unimpressed with these filters. Not just mediocore, but there was dust on the lenses and you can tell by just holding them they are cheap as sin. PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. IF YOU HAVE ANY HOPES OF TAKING AMAZING PICTURES, UPGRADE!!!...more info
  • Received 2 damaged filters
I tried to get good product from Amazon twice. The first filter was covered with dust on both sides. Blew off the dust and filter was dirty enough underneath I did not want to deal anymore with it. The actual filter case was not closed completely when I received it, nor would it close completely.

They were very good at getting out a replacement quickly.

The second filter also had dust on it, and some spotted residue. I blew off the dust, gently cleaned the filter, only to find a scratch in the middle inside face of the filter, rendering it useless for photo work.

Neither filter was new as advertised. Both had obviously been used. I hope they don't try to send out both filters again.

Other filters I purchased through other vendors at the same time arrived fine and in great condition.

Amazon was prompt at refunding my money for the filter when I said I wanted to return it.

I just wish I had gotten a new unblemished filter so I could review how it works with my camera....more info
  • Surprised and Disappointed - Arrived Scratched
I think I got the filter that "Camera Guy" returned. The filter was very dirty, covered with specks and a layer of film. Cleaned most of it successfully with dry lens paper and would have been happy with it, but there was a scratch in the middle. The case was open, appeared very worn, and there was no packing material of any kind in the box.

There is a handwritten "R" in marker on the back of the cardboard case insert - perhaps it means "return?" Also, wrong packing slip was included, for someone else's order of books.

After years of ordering, this is the first bad shipment I have ever received from Amazon, and to date I have been happy with their customer service. Am hoping this is some sort of fluke - although I am not the only one to receive a dirty and damaged filter.

Am new to filters - don't know how much, if any, of the problem would have been due to Tiffen quality.

Update 19 May 09 - returned filter was received by Amazon and refund went smoothly. Am still very happy with Amazon's customer service. ...more info

  • Garbage
OK, first off I purchased the 82mm version of this filter, but I am writing the review here since there isn't an 82mm page on Amazon. Well, here is my experience. Tiffen is marketing their new HT filters as being scratch resistant and having military grade durability. When I took mine out of the box - there were nicks in the grooves of the filter ring. These made it not only difficult to screw into my polarizer, but also scratched the metal on my polarizer and lense as well. It also made it very difficult to clean. And it is really easy to get fingerprints on the filter. That brings me to my next point.

The first time I put a micro-fiber cloth on the filter - it noticeably scratched it! I was cleaning other brands filters with the same cloth - no problem, but with Tiffen's ultra durable state of the art new filter - it scratches immediately. What a joke. I contacted Tiffen and they apologized and I sent it back to the store I bought if from so I never actually got to try it out. I am sure you can understand I wasn't going to get a replacement. It already had cost me like $15 in s/h for that darn filter. I mean what pathetic quality control and they are selling these things for like $300 on their website. Based on my experience I would stear clear. Save your time, save your money and save the potential headache....more info
  • 62mm Tiffen filter kit is so-so...
Very affordable, but that comes with a quality trade-off. The threads are not the greatest and the "laminated" filters can have slight manufacturing defects. One of my filters came with a small air trap bubble in it. Its small and near the outer edge. Perhaps tiffen would replace, but since it doesn't affect image quality, I am not to worried about it. If you want a set of filters that you can just throw in your pocket for a walk around then the price is right. If you are very serious about photography, then I'd look elsewhere....more info

  • Starter kit
I found the set of filters a good start. The most useful for me is the catalog that is sent with it. This helps you understand what filters you may need....more info
  • great buy for the money
The three filters that come in the kit are a very useful combo. I normally would buy these individually but when I can get all three for not much more than buying one in many stores, I had to jump at the deal.

I've been in photography for years, from novice to professional and have used Tiffen filters most of the time. They are good quality and if I should damage one, oh well. Better it than my lens. ...more info

  • Absolutely 100% horrible filters...
I decide to spend few dollars and to buy 3 filters pack that was advertised on Amazon.
After received I kind of get confused because nothing was happening when mounted on the lens. Warming filter did really not do anything except add little bit of color but that made picture look unrealistic and kind of old. It definitely did not add that nice filing and enrich colors as advertised. Then I get to ply with polarizing filter and this was total disappointment, it does do absolutely 110% nothing it is so bad to the point that I considering this to be just a perfect scam. I got about 100/150 pictures of the sun hitting ocean but absolutely nothing changed it does not mater how hard I try to adjust everything. Instructions say that I should change position and angle. I did, and there was of course difference by changing position, but no difference when I had polarizing filter on, that did not change anything. I try two lenses Sigma and Canon and two cameras Canon and Nikon and results are horrible. Don't buy it because it is definitely something you will buy and never use it.
    I am returning mine....

  • Just as expected...
I was so excited to get this filter set I had to try each out the same day. At first I didn't understand the idea of a circular polarization filter that spins. And when I first used it outside my home, it didn't seem to show much difference. I read the Tiffen booklet that came with the filters and it tells you how the polarization filter works better in certain situations than others. You also have to be a certain angle from the sun to get the full polarization effect. But once I got the hang of it after playing with it for a while, I love it.

I like how you can spin the filter because sometimes when you have the effect working while you're holding your camera horizontally, when you turn it for a vertical photo, the effect goes away. You simply turn the filter until you see the effect again, and shoot away. One time I was taking a photo of a rainbow and went to turn the camera and the rainbow instantly disappeared. It's kind of fun to play around with this. You can also add filters on top of this one, but I'm not sure how that may affect the polarization filter.

Overall this filter kit is wonderful and worth the cost since it normally costs more than this at a photo store. I haven't played with the warming filter yet, but the circular polarization lens is my favorite and probably will stay on my lens most of the time. I use this on my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi with a Sigma telephoto lens....more info
  • Further insight
This is one of the best bargains that i've seen, "essentially" you get 3 filters for the price of one. The image quality with these filters is great, the 812 (warming) filter is by far a favorite giving back the color richness that flash photography so often washes out, that is unless you have the patience for constantly tweaking your flash power. Aside from the 812 the UV protector is basically a clear protective filter. While it obviously has advantages over clear glass, I tend not to think of it as any different. This too is a great filter which I use about half the time because it doesn't affect color hues or change f stop values too greatly while it takes the worry out of carrying the camera around ready for any candid shots that may occur. Finally included is the circular polarizer. This filter adjusts the amount of uv light entering the camera by spinning the filter to the direction the uv rays are entering (or turning the thingy till things look better). This lens is great for sunny days and will take surface glare off lakes and glass making them transparent again. It also makes colors more crisp in general when photographing buildings and other large "reflective" man-made things. So things sound great so far, but now to why I only give this item 4 stars. While Tiffen is known to be one of the best at photo and video filters, they have quality control issues that do no live up to thier reputation. In my case the 812 filter arrived with a discoloration in the glass. While it was didn't hurt image quality, with the flaw being towards the edge of the filter, I none the less didn't want to find a situation in which the flaw would diminish quality. Seeing as it was not amazon's fault my first e-mail went to Tiffen for a replacement which they said they would gladly do, but only after I send them the filter and they recieve it would they ship my replacement (not an option in my circumstances). Instead Amazon's wonderful customer service shown through again, and within 3 days they had replaced the entire set. The second set arrivided without flaw but since my other two filters were in perfect condition I traded just the 812. I havn't had any other issues and i'm very satisfied with my filters. The only other word of warning would be to that of the circular polorizer. While I recieved 2 that were flawless occassionally I have read in reviews customers have received ones that were assembled backwards making the lens useless. A quick way to check to see if your CP is working correctly is to hold it, thread facing yourself, and look at an LCD monitor or TV and spin it until the picture dissapears(obviously working correctly). I still wouldn't pass up this deal knowing what I do now, chances are everything will show up perfectly but none the less if you're concerned order it before you need it and check everything over carefully. Amazon is always the best for returns and will often ship a replacement the next day with overnight shipping.

    And a little further insight...
I was recently doing some black and white film photography, and decided to use my 812 warming filter as a protective lens as I was carrying 3 lenses with me. Just thought that I would mention that using this filter will produce a "White" sky in some outdoor photographs. The shots were taken with a gradient blue sky to which the entirety showed up white, even on bracketed sets, that should have shown something in one of the series. While itself was a interesting effect for some shots, it mostly just caused me frustration in the darkroom. I just wanted to add this as fair warning. I discovered this on accident, so I don't know if it applies to all sky conditions as I didn't do a lot B&W sky shots, I might test it using Photoshop later as I see they have the 812s effect built in. Anyways, good luck and have fun photoing....more info
