Product Description

Trust the musical theater to make life as an orphan sound, well, almost fun. After opening on the West End in 1960, Lionel Bart's Oliver! successfully transferred to Broadway, prefacing the British invasion of the 1970s and 1980s. Sam Mendes, who also directed acclaimed London productions of Company and Cabaret (the latter one moving on to Broadway) was at the helm for this version and certainly got things moving at a clip--especially since Lionel Bart wrote some new music and lyrics and the score was snappily rearranged. Jonathan Pryce is a suitably larger-than-life Fagin, and Sally Dexter shines as Nancy--her confrontation with Fagin and Miles Anderson's Bill Sikes in a new reprise of "It's a Fine Life" is pricelessly nasty. Going for maximum oomph and minimum sappiness, this swell recording may make even Oliver! haters reconsider. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

  • Cheers all!
I first saw Oliver as a child while living in London in the 1960's. Have seen almost every version of the story. I am sooo happy that i bought this cd - everyone is fabulous - my 'ats off to Jonathan Pryce as Fagin - he would convince anyone to pick a pocket or two!

    Bravo and well done!...more info

  • 71 minutes of pure joy
"please, sir, i want some more" that's what i said after hearing this amazing cd. the fantastic music, sound, and lyrics made this cd to be one of the best one i have. songs like: "consider yourself", "you've got to pick apocket or two", "oom-pah-pah" and more are extraordinary beautiful, but what makes this cd a musical delightful is the quality of the preformance. the wonderful singing and "acting" of the songs, and the order of the song takes us into the story what makes this cd more than just a songs cd, but an entire show. all the thing mentioned abouve and more make this cd the master-piece it is. what more can i say but- enjoy!...more info

  • Truer to the original than any other recording.
I was thrilled to hear this recording of "Oliver!" Finally, someone has seen fit to play the show as darkly and textured as Dickens' novel on which the musical is based. The arrangements are ominous, from the thunder and music-box echoes of the short overture to the sparse open version of Sikes' "My Name". This is a hard-edged "Oliver!". The performances are exceptionally good. It's wonderful to hear boys in the lead roles of Oliver and Dodger who can actually sing. Jonathan Pryce's Fagin, while maybe a little too avuncular, has a mix of charm and desperation that makes the character both complex and appealing. While Sally Dexter sounds a bit old for Nancy (in the novel, she's 18), her performance has a raw edge that makes it believable. In the up-tempo numbers, she's playful, raspy and belting. But there is great versatility in her vocal performance, as one can hear in the conflicted yearning of "As Long As He Needs Me". The others in the cast fare just as well, creating clear, colorful characterizations through their performances. This recording paints a landscape that has the complexity of Dickens' "Oliver Twist", at turns humorous and threatening. If you're after the happy "Oliver" of the film version, with Fagin and Dodger skipping off into the sunset, this is not for you. But if you want to enjoy the full scope of the musical, I highly recommend this recording. ...more info
  • They went too far.
While Jonathon pryce did an amazing job with Fagen, I was not impressed with the production as a whole. I do not like the added songs. The songs were the cheesy stereotypical songs that I think people hate about musicals. Also, I think the horribly graphic murder of Nancy was completely inappropriate. It was so horrific! Some of the best things about theatre is the emotions and actions they "imply" it doesn't have to be in your face to have an impact.
For me the best will always be the Original Broadway cast from 1963. (although you have to love the film version with Ron Moody, carol Reed and Jack Wild)...more info
  • 1994 LONDON PALLADIUM CD
MY OPINION I THINK SALLY DEXTER DID A AWESOME JOB AS NANCY. I ENJOYED HER SINGING TREMEDOUSLY OVER THE BROADWAY NANCY. (SORRY I DON'T KNOW HER NAME. JUST LISTENING TO THE CD I JUST FEEL THAT THE SHOW WAS TERRIFIC....more info

  • Excellent Cast and Great Music
This recording has a lot of pep and energy and feeling -- the characters all seem to come to life and you can sense that the cast put their hearts into their perfomance. Bill Sikes certainly sounds scary and mean; Fagin is delightfully sneaky; and the Artful Dodger is boyish, wild, and clever. Sally Dexter is wonderfully cast as Nancy and she can go from brash to mellow, depending on the mood of the song (her "As Long As He Needs Me" is quite moving and full of emotion). And for me (an American) the saucy Cockney accents are delighftul!

The only problem I have with this recording is the boy who plays Oliver. He has a good Broadway voice, but he sounds like a little adult -- vibrato everywhere -- and he just does not sound like the innocent, wide-eyed child Oliver was supposed to be. I also think he goes a little flat sometimes (because of the excessive vibrato). Nevertheless, he has a nice, strong voice, and after you get used to it you may even start to like it.

Overall, this is a first-class recording of an exciting musical full of good music -- and an excellent cast....more info

  • ADAM ALL THE WAY!
I'm kinda ashamed to say that I have not really heard this and I do not own it- but I simply know that I ADORE Adam Searles and I would SO buy this CD simply for him!! He is a wonderful actor and has a delightful voice! Not to mention his accent!! *Smile* Well anyway- this CD is at a very good price and I'm going to see the earliest time that I can order it (I hope my mom will let me! ). This CD is simply worth it because of Adam, but I'm sure the rest is awesome too!!...more info
  • Overblown Revival
I too looked forward to this recording. Oliver was one of my favorite shows from the 1960s. This recording lacks all of the charm of the original recording (Broadway cast.) Songs go on forever, orchestrations and choral arrangements are overblown and go over the same territory tediously. Stick to the original Broadway or London cast recordings - you'll hear the show as it was originally intended. Short, to the point and quite poignant. And besides, no one can come close the Georgia Brown!

  • Sally Dexter Is Awful!
This recording of Oliver is okay! It is nothing in comparison to the original Broadway Recording. Although the orchestrations are better, the singers in the original cast are much better. Jonathan Pryce is good. His singing voice sounds very different from when he speaks, although I'm sure his stage presence made up for his minor flaws (but that doesn't make a good CD.)The Oliver has a beautiful voice but maybe a little to pretty. He sounds much older than the character is intended to be. But he does have a good voice. What really turned me off from this CD was the Sally Dexter. She is the worst Nancy I have ever heard. She puts no feeling into the music and her rendition of "As Long As He Needs Me" needs a lot of work. Her voice is nice but not incredible. Nancy is probably one of the greatest roles in Broadway history and she brings down the whole production. If you want to hear a good Nancy listen to Georgia Brown!...more info
  • Updated Score From the Original 63 album (witch is better).
This album is wonderful, the music is crisp and the score is better ( with the exception of the overture, Witch is horrible and i men horrible compard to the original) but the rest of the tracks are wonderful! Get it if you like oliver (but if you like the old score a lot and you dont like the idea of updating then dont get it (but I LOVE IT IT IS AN OLIVER FOR THE NEW AGE)!...more info
  • Broadway is not always best!
What is there left unsaid to say about this great recording? I just found out that my high school will be performing Oliver next year, so I thought I would have to purchase a cast recording of the show. I was not sure whether or not I should get the Original Broadway Cast or the 1994 London Cast. Well, after reading the reviews for this CD I decided to purchase this one.

Let me start off the review by saying that this is one of the most well casted shows I have come across in a long while. Jonathan Pryce's Fagin is excellent. He is dark yet playful and Sally Dexter's Nancy is magnificent. I especially like her songs "It's a Fine Life" and "I'll Do Anything". All of the orphans do a great job. Artful Dodger is great, forgive me I forget his name, he is one of the best I have heard. The rest of the supporting cast is beyond comparison. They blow everyone else away.

Another thing I really like about this recording as opposed to the Original Broadway Cast is that the tempo is peppier and in my opinion this makes listening to this CD much more enjoyable. The tempo keeps the songs and storyline going. Please invest in this CD, it is magical....more info

  • Oliver the Great!!!
I recently took my three oldest grandchildren to see the show "Oliver". Usually, when I take them to a show, I buy the CD from the soundtrack so I can familiarize them with the music. The show we went to was a revival with a semi-professional cast with no CD available. I went onto Amazon to find one to purchase. After listening to samplings that were available through Amazon I decided on the 1994 revival in London's Palladium. It is wonderful!!! ...except that my grandchildren are driving me crazy everytime they come. They each have their favorite songs from the show and they play them over and over again! I love having the ability of listening to different CD's.

    Thanks Amazon!!...more info
  • Adam Searles is the greatest!
I love this Cd! Its super! But the best part about it is that Adam Searles is Dodger! He has a great vocie and he is perfect for this part! He was also great in Les Mis as Gavroche! I love him! You should buy this Cd not only because it is a great musical, but because Adam searles is Dodger!...more info
  • Awesome! :)
My high school is just putting on Oliver this year, and I got the part of Mr. Sowerberry and Mr. Brownlow..and this was the only cd that had my song, "That's Your Funeral", so it's the best! LOL, but also this one is very peppy and upbeat! "Consider Yourself" is one of the best versions along with "Who Will Buy"! Fagin, Nancy, and Sykes are all the best ones I've heard at all! This one is definite a great update to the old one! Must buy!...more info
  • Why didn't I buy this CD years ago?
I heard some tracks that my friend Adam (Dodger) played for me this morning. I can't believe I haven't bought a copy before now and gutted I never saw him in the show! I was definately impressed with what I heard and very proud to know you Adam!!! :-)...more info
  • excellent
"Oliver!" is my favorite musical. This production brings a new vibrance to it. Technology has come a long way since the first little orphan sang, "Where is Love?". The original cast album from the 1960's will survive quite well. Georgia Brown sang, "As Long As He Needs Me", with little orchestration. Buy them both!...more info
