  • The Heavenly Man
This book is truly a blessing. This man's story is an inspiration to everyone. Well-written and captivating, it will hold the attention of any reader....more info
  • Wow.
How close are the miracles of God. It wasn't until reading Brother Yun's well-written story that I finally had the realization that supernatural intervention takes places today...now. And what is so amazing is that what He choses to supernaturally intervene in is not necessarily how most would think, want or expect. The Father's ways are most definitely and phenomenally revealed in Brother Yun and his wife's stories.

If you choose to read this book, you will be exposed to what you most probably have never been exposed to before. This isn't a book about persecution, but exposure to the actual plans and purposes of God....more info
  • The Real Thing
Excellent account of a Christian leader in China who faced persecution for his faith. Brother Yun continues to be a leader in the Christian Church of China, even though he is currently exiled....more info
  • Brother Yun says it straight up
American Christians are pretty clueless, but they had better gird up their loins as the practice session will begin soon. This is a must read for the up and coming times we are facing....more info
  • Great!!
This is my second favorite book in the entire world (1st is the Bible). But it speaks to anyone on a spiritual level. I enjoyed it, as have the 7 other people who are reading the books (I ordered 8) because of the intensity and passion of the writer, yet in simplicity.

A powerful life story of Brother Yun, and how he suffers for what he believes, and the beautiful and intense testimony his life gives. There are many miracles and also a lot of talk about China (setting). He's a part of the Underground Church, and it talks of his struggles against the authorities and the political Church.

It's one of those books that will change any, and everyone's lives....and once you pick it up, you'll never put it down!!!...more info
  • Incredible story of surviving persecution
Brother Yun's story of persecution for his faith is incredible! It is filled with miracles and is a testimony to God's provision and loving care, even under the most dire circumstances. I also enjoyed having real photographs to supplement the story....more info
  • Incredible!

This book is amazing, and we bought three copies of it. We never have a copy because we keep lending it out to people. I look foward to the next book....more info
  • A Hopeful Alternative
We in the West are faced with an onslaught of militant Islam. Suggested responses are military defense and diplomatic negotiation. Brother Yun and Paul Hattaway offer a third alternative. They picture a Christianity that is not afraid of death or imprisonment and that mirrors the New Testament teaching of loving your enemies and overcoming evil with good.
Heavenly Man mirrors the Book of Acts where sometimes Christians rot in prison and sometimes escape miraculously....more info
  • Great Book

Amazing to see the story of Acts lived out today. Inspiring....more info
  • AMAZING!
THIS BOOK COULD LITERALLY CHANGE YOUR LIFE! IT GIVES THE TRUE LIFE ACCOUNT OF A CHINESE CHRISTIAN WHO STRUGGLES WITH THE PERSECUTION OF UNDERGROUND CHURCHES IN COMMUNIST CHINA. IT REVEALS THE POTENTIAL OF OUR POWER THROUGH JESUS CHRIST WHEN WE ARE WILLING TO SUFFER FOR OUR CONVICTIONS. MUST READ!...more info
  • Our Chinese brothers and sisters have much to teach us
This is a unique, life-changing book. I found this story of a simple, humble Chinese brother and how the risen Lord appeared to them to bless, heal, save and call his family into a life of service for the Gospel and for the name of the Lord. It is much about our Lord and not so much about brother Yun, and this is one of the marks of its authenticity. I found it deeply convicting, life-changing and inspirational. It is a reminder that the call of Christ is a call to the cross, and that His ways are infinitely above ours. I also feel I got a glimpse of one of the ways God will reach what we westerners call the unreached peoples of the "10-40 window" and what our Chinese brothers and sisters call the way back to Jerusalem. Read this book, my friend, and be blessed!...more info
  • the violence never seems to cease........
This book isnt for you if violence makes you queasy. I thought it was unbelievable what Yun went through, and it was an interesting book. I learned much about the history of Christianity, which I new nothing about before. However, I felt the book was very repetitive, as I cannot count how many times Yun went to prison, was electrocuted with a baton, beaten senselessly, etc. I definitely believe in miracles, but everytime I turned the page there was another one.......so many that it almost seemed unbelievable and I wondered if this story was actually true. ...more info
  • Everything God Has For You
A little over a year ago, I read Randy Alcorn's novel, "Safely Home." And it was based on Chinese Christians and the persecution they might go through in China. And my first thought was how rough that has to really be. Being a master storyteller, Randy Alcorn barely scratched the surface, and he could've really gone deep. After my dad read "Safely Home," he found this book, "The Heavenly Man," and basically told me, "You've got to read this! This is amazing!" If you think you're some kind of victim just because you've been made fun of for your Christian faith, wake up! Christians like Brother Yun know something about suffering, and how to rejoice in the process. HUH? Read on!

And this really is nothing short of amazing. Brother Yun started preaching at the age of 16. Like in Alcorn's book, there are church house meetings. And the Chinese government hates Christians, and has ways of dealing with them. So for those of us who have these ideas of being a simple POW with just a few beatings, it goes a lot further than that. The torture that Brother Yun suffered is nuts! And this guy can rejoice and witness to his cell mates about the glory of God. Seeing miracles, and experiencing them, and you'd have to be crazy not to believe in God.

Yun makes it clear that when we are in God's will, God has us exactly where He wants us. It is a reminder to stay in the will of God and to keep focused on the reward God has for us. And being in God's will means to be ready for everything God has for us here on Earth. That means that we'll probably do some suffering, and that we will bear our own cross.

Would anybody line up for the testimony of Brother Yun? All I can say is WOW! This is an amazing life. A true eye opener!...more info
  • Challenging Complacency
Friends had heard Brother Yun speak in Minneapolis, so recommended the book to our book club. It is difficult to imagine the persecution described in the book happening in modern China, and easy for the skeptic to abandon the book after just a few chapters, yet we have read many other published accounts of these underground house churches. It may also be hard to believe in modern miracles, but others have testified that God reveals himself with miracles in parts of the world where printed Bibles are not available.

Throughout the book Hattaway also gives Deling, Brother Yun's wife, opportunity to give her perspective on the events, which nicely complemented the dramatic account from Brother Yun.

Paul Hattaway seems to be a better author than many who have written similar works. He writes well, in a style which keeps the story in the fore and does not draw attention to the writing itself. Accounts of tortures endured during imprisonment in particular became repetitive and a little boring, which may be more a source of criticism about me than the book.

Some in our book club thought the accounts were exaggerated or complete fiction (perhaps even the work of a con man or a sociopath), while others were ready to accept every word as factually accurate. I found no good basis by which to reject these accounts, but I have felt a need to learn more about the persecution of the modern Christian church in China and other parts of the world.

If you keep your own walk with Christ in mind as you read this book you will find important challenges to the complacency we so often find in the West.

  • WOW! Talk About the Love for Christ
This man has truly suffered for Christ. You also see that even when he suffers that life still goes on. He is married but not able to spend much time with his family. To me this book is about priorities in your life even when you suffer for Christ. You may desire a ministry for the Lord but your family takes priority over that ministry. Basically it's God, you, family and then ministry....more info
  • Few books change lives and this one does!!!!
I can't say enough about how wonderful this book is. The life of Yun really does seem like a modern day book of acts. It was refreshing to read a modern day account of God using someone in such a magnificent way. The account just captured my spirit and really spoke to me about what it means to truly follow Christ. No holds barred! Life Changing!!!!! Get a copy for yourself and for someone you love. It will draw you into a deeper and closer relationship with your savior....more info
  • This book will make you think
I loved what Brother Yun said when he said "Chinese Christians are persecuted by beatings and execution and Western Christians are persecuted by slander." The book really make you look at your walk with Christ. The book was well written and keep my attention. ...more info
  • New Testament Christianity
Brother Yun's account of the home church movement in China is compelling and inspiring reading. Suffering much persecution and imprisonments, separation from his family, tortures, he was able to endure the worse sort of hardships year in and year out. This all because at the very beginning, he lived the truth of Christ - and that, at first, without even a Bible. This, he finally obtained after much prayer from a man he did not know in circumstances quite miraculous. After this, he was able to see very clearly further truth of which the Spirit had been leading Him all along.

He became a leader in the home church movement in China. The communists, not being able to crush the movement with beatings and intimidation, then sought to undermine the home church movement with the "Three Self Church", a state sanctioned church with guidelines to control it to state policy.

Yun and his family made a miraculous escape to Germany. The arduous escape is told in this book. Today, he ministers from a small town in Germany, travelling to UK and other places, to serve his Lord. He can be heard speaking at Cambridge on the internet. Just google "Brother Yun China". He still is being attacked, called a "con man" and so on. But his story in The Heavenly Man rings true, as I think any reader will be able to determine, whether he is a Christian or not. This book is well worth a read.

  • Inspiring story of how God is moving in China
After reading this book you'll understand why some believe that Asia may become the next center of Christianity. With the West becoming more secular and morally bankrupt, God is moving in China to spread the Gospel. Who would have thought that Korea, formerly a primarily Buddhist country, would become a Christian nation that sends out multitudes of missionaries? In the same way, God is using the Chinese house churches to spread the Gospel not only throughout China but also throughout the rest of Asia and beyond. The story of Brother Yun shows how the Gospel began to grow in China under persecution. This is inspiring and motivating. However, it was hard to relate the sold-out Christianity of the Chinese house churches to the soft, laissez-faire Christianity we know in the West. May God bring revival not only throughout Asia but also to the West. ...more info
  • Absolutely incredible
I read this book about a year ago and reread it recently, and
wow. This book will touch you in so many ways. We here in the
West take so much for granted, such as openly worshipping God
without fear and sharing our faith freely with others. Brother
Yun's passionate story of following and seeking God despite
overwhelming pain is such an encouragement to my spirit. He is
so reminiscent of the Apostle Paul, laying down himself for the
futherance of the Gospel. It is also awesome that God has worked
so mightily, through healings and miracles, to bring glory to
himself where the access to the Bible is limited. Praise Jesus for
this amazing book of sacrifice and faith. ...more info

  • Life Changing Book... SERIOUSLY
This was the most incredible book I have ever read, aside from the Bible of course. I cried throughout the entire book. The Lord spoke to me through this book, and I was challenged like never before to stand for what I believe. Everyone needs to read this book. You will not be the same....more info
  • Could not stop the tears from flowing!!
My dear brother sent me this book about a year ago and I never got around to reading it until one sleepless night. I could not put it down once I started! The stories are simply amazing and I was seriously convicted. I felt I had absolutely no excuse for not sharing God's word, especially when I have complete freedom to do so and without any real persecution. Brother Yun is a humble man who served God against all odds and shares his incredible story with honesty. He gives great insight into the heart of the persecuted Christians in China and the house church movement which is sweeping across their country. Even through numerous beatings and times spent in jail, Brother Yun's zeal for the Lord never diminished. It reminded me why the West has been so ineffective in spreading the gospel. We are so complacent and unaware of the spiritual slump we are in because we are free to worship when we want.

Brother Yun is indeed a heavenly man! This book is a strong witness to Christians and non-christians. There is a line in the book which affected me deeply:

"When we arrive at the end of our own strength it is not defeat, but the start of tapping into God's boundless resources. It is when we are weak that we are strong in God."

Brother Yun was able to understand that true strength comes from God alone and it is often when we are at the end of our struggles and feeling completely defeated that God's power shines brilliantly in our lives. God is in control. This humble man was able to communicate through this book that it is really about God and not about us. Along with Brother Yun's telling of his story, his wife Deling and some of his fellow believers testify with their own versions of events that occurred throughout their persecution. If you are a Christian, this book is a must. Definitely buy this book and share it with everyone around you! And, don't forget to share your faith!!...more info
  • Brother Yun's Inspiring Story
This is a very compelling and amazing account of a modern day Christian in China. The story reads like the Bible's accounts of Paul and Peter in Acts. He witnessed and was a part of many miracles such as escaping from a very high security prison, immediate physical healings from disease and broken bones, amongst many others. He has been imprisioned and tortured for being a Christian on multiple occasions for many years.

Brother Yun has played a big role in the resurgence of the house church movement in China. At one time, the church in China was weak and dying but has within recent years experienced strong growth.

It's a good read, very quick, and maintains the reader's attention. Brother Yun will challenge the reader to examine his or her faith and spur them on to seek hard after the things of God.

A couple notable quotes from the book follow. "We're not called to live by human reason. All that matters is obedience to God's Word and his leading in our lives. If God says go, we'll go. If he says stay, we'll stay. When we are in his will, we are in the safest place in the world." "If you truly want to see God move, the two main things you must do is learn the Word of God and have the obedience to do what God tells you to do."

This is highly recommended reading for anyone interested in learning about a truly extradinary story of a man who is sold out for Christ....more info
  • The forcefulness of this book will pummel you, knock the wind out of you and drive you to your knees
The story of Brother Yun is at the top in the most faith building stories ever put together. In one of many incidents while Brother Yun is in prison for preaching the gospel, he is visited by his dear wife Sister Deling and young son and daughter. He asks his young son, Isaac, "How is school?" His young son with tears in eyes answers and says, "Daddy, I want to go to school, but you aren't home with us. The teacher tells the other children, 'Isaac and his family stupidly believe in Jesus.' My classmates mock me and say, 'Your father is a dirty criminal who deserves to be in prison.'"

This dear brother could do nothing but cry and ask the Lord to intervene for the family he had given up for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ.

China's brutal PSB officers mercilessly beat Brother Yun because he refuses to keep offending China's communist government with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Ne never for even a moment betrays his Lord.

Read this life changing story - it asks the question whether we are producing any fruit at all as the Lord has commanded us to.

  • Painfully Inspirational
Have you ever wondered how God speaks to someone who doesn't have a Bible or access to the Word? This testimonial will isnpire you and grant you faith in God's omnipotence. Brother Yun is proof of God's accessibility and answers to every prayer. While the book was inspirational, it was also painful to read about the persecution that Chinese Christians are facing. Oh, that we could all be so faithful as this man and his family. ...more info
