Strengths: High grade multi coated lens glass. Robust built. Great look to match the V1 camera. Deep thread cut to fit firmly into the camera.

Weaknesses: No front threads. Fixed focal length. Expect more magnification power at this price. Low quality carry pouch.

Summary: Hi,

Before buying this lens I looked for a long time for any other lens that will fit this camera and how good image they produce. Sony VCL-DEh17V wins!

This is a wonderful lens for those using Sony DSC V1 camera. The high grade lens quality is the best thing about this lens. Now a days there are a number of telephoto lenses that fits camera of different thread size and even give more magnification. But a very few produces distort free photograph. Sony VCL-DEH17V telephoto is one of those few. Also the multi coated glass reduced the reflection that takes place within the lens elements.

The look of this lens is nicely matched with the V1 camera. Body is quite sturdy made of aluminum.

Now some down sides. First and foremost the lens does not have thread in front. So filters or polarizer cannot be attached if you like to shot a photograph using this telephoto lens. Secondly, unlike most telephoto zooms used in 35mm SLR, in this lens there is no manual control over zooming your subject as this lens is a fixed one. You can however adjust the zoom using the camera's zoom button (with the lens fitted on) but that may produce vingenetting (dark circles around image) below 3x zoom of camera. Thirdly, at this price more magnification is expected. Sony has another lens VCL-DH2630 that has 2.6X magnification but does not fit this camera. More powerful telephoto lens is expected from Sony. Lastly Sony should improve the quality of the pouch/carry bag they provide with the lens.

Please note the camera¡¯s inbuilt flash and AF assist laser hologram gets blocked with this lens, but it is very unlikely one will use these features in telephoto range. However one can use a external flash if flash is absolutely needed.

With little option left for a telelens that fits DSC V1 camera this is a good buy. I tested some nature photographs with this lens and all produced awesome photographs. I highly recommend this lens.

Thanks and Regards

Strengths: It really does increase the focal length of the lens to 58mm and allows you capture some really sharp nature photography (especially if you shoot as 5 megapixel TIFF). Easy to use.

Weaknesses: Putting on and taking off the lens is not fast at all. Really works only when camera is at maximum zoom.

Summary: I tried this lens out at the zoo. It really suprised me how much of an extra reach the extra 1.7X zoom adds. Of course I would enjoy Sony releasing a more powerful telephoto zoom lens this does in the meantime expand the capabilities and subject matter possible with the DSC-V1 camera. The camera worked well in the birdhouse where the subject was mostly stationary. I found that when some subjects (monkeys and giraffes) approached me close enough, I wanted to remove the lens which is no speedy procedure! In fact, by the time I had turned off the camera, removed the lens, and turned the camera back on, my subject had returned to telephoto range.

The main reason the product only works best at maximum zoom is that retracting the built in lens may cause the lens housing to become visible in the frame.

Strengths: Gives true magnification to boost the camera's zoom; Lightweight

Weaknesses: Not quick to change--need to turn camera off to take on/off; "black corners" if telephoto lens is not zoomed out enough

Summary: The conversion lens is really like a magnifying glass at the end of a barrel. It comes in two pieces. To use it, you turn the camera off (to retract the normal lens and prevent damaging it), screw on the adapter ring into grooves around the camera's telephoto lens and then screw the magnifying lens onto the adapter ring. You're then ready to turn the camera back on and have the magnification.

To control the "zoom", you just use the zoom controls for the normal telephoto lens. There are no extra controls to learn to use this adapter.

There is an area on the zoom where if you don't have the telephoto lens on the camera out far enough, you get a clear circle in the middle with the image and around it is black. Also, don't expect to be able to quickly switch between the normal lens and the adapter--it does take a bit of time to screw the conversion end on and off and Sony recommends having the camera turned off to make the switch in order to prevent damage to the lens on the camera.

In all, the "magnifier" truly works. Photos appear closer and very clear. This tele end conversion lens is a good alternative until they build affordable digital cameras to accept varying lenses as the SLR bodies do, just don't expect to quickly change between the normal zoom ranges on the camera and the additional zoom range afforded by this converter.

Experience: 4 Months

Strengths: It allows you to increase the zoom of the DSC-V1 to 6.8X without any distortion.

Weaknesses: It blocks the camera's flash and creates a shadow, but this can be eliminated by using an external flash.

Summary: This is a pretty nice telephoto lens for the DSC-V1, however it would be nice to get a little more magnification. You can add 58mm filters between the adapter and the lens if you like.
