Summary: This program makes your computer stuck if you have windows XP.
I spent WEEKS trying to find out why my new copmuter crushes all the time, and I was amazed to see all my problems were gone just as I uninstalled this product.
A shame to symantec.

DONT BUY THIS !! IT DOES NOT WORK

Strengths: none

Weaknesses: Prevented the operation of Outlook, Norton Antivirus, and Norton Internet Security. Shut down my LAN

Summary: I dowwnloaded WinFax PRO 10.03 (supposedly fixed the XP problems of 10.02) when installed all of the above programs would not start until I manually removed WinFax 10.03 since the uninstaller would not work. I tried three more times using the printed instuctions from the Symantec web site with the same results. Removing the product manually requires 30-45 minutes and a careful edit of the registry. Symantec agreed to refund my money. I have used WinFax in several versions (8.0-10.0) on several computers upto and including Windows ME with out problems but this program will not work with Windows XP. My computer is a new Dell 600m as soon as WinFax 10.03 was removed manually all programs operated normally. Use WinFax pro 10.03 at your own risk.

Weaknesses: Crashes and buggy

Summary: To say that Symantec misrepresented itself in saying that WinFax Pro 10.02 is XP compliant is an understatement. My system crashed during installation. That was only the beginning of my problems. I checked their troubleshooting section of the manual to no avail and went through all of the fixes recommended on their site. When I tried to call their technical support line I found out that you have to pay for their help. Further, I found out that they offer a patch to help with some integration issues but you have to pay for shipping and can only get it after calling their pay support line. I guess expecting software that works or at least technical support even on a limited basis is asking too much from Symantec. Now Word and Outlook have become buggy because of the installation. If I had read some of the other reviews posted elsewhere on the internet I would have saved a lot of time and aggravation. Save yourself the hastle, DON'T BUY WINFAX PRO 10.02 AND EXPECT IT TO WORK WITH WINDOWS XP!

Strengths: No redeeming features

Weaknesses: Complete waste of time and money

Summary: I first tried Winfax Basic (supplied with Norton Systemworks 2002 which is touted as being fully compatible with XP). Would not install. Then I tried this supposedly fully featured program, listed as being fully compatible with XP. Same problem!? I trawled through the internet for help without success. It seems this program is completely unusable. This is the worst Norton product ever - avoid it like the plague!

Weaknesses: Incompatible with Windows XP

Summary: ver 10.02 will not install correctly on Windows XP home or pro. If you manage to get it to work at all, it fails all the time.

Strengths: None-cannot run it

Weaknesses: Completely full of bugs!

Summary: One has to question if anyone at Symantec ever tests their own software. I was attempting to install under Windows XP Professional. The install crashed.

I am now stuck in the middle. I cannot run the product; I only get an error message. I cannot re-install the product because it claims there is already a previously installed version. (It is seeing itself. I have never had any version of WinFax install on my system.) I cannot un-install it because it finds a corrupt install file and refuses to do anything!

I have tried Symantec's support. Their support is about as well structured as their products! You get run around after run around. They have a paid support, but why should I pay them more for building a defective product! Their "free" support is also full of bugs. I had their automatic system test hang Internet Explorer while checking my system! I had to re-boot my system to get out of that one! When their scanner does run, it says everything is fine!

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT if you have Windows XP!

Strengths: It does a great job as a fax machine built right into your computer.

Weaknesses: Broadcast faxing is a bit complicated, but when learned it works like a charm.

Summary: I have used WinFaxPro in my business for more than 10 years, ever since it was created by Delrina in Canada. Since Symantec has owned it, the technical support got better, then worse than Delrina's. Now, in 2003, no technical support is free, which is a shame. If you want to broadcast fax with it you might try buying from a reseller that would offer some free technical support with it, otherwise you'll spend countless hours muddling through the help files.

Strengths: Incentive to kill yourself

Weaknesses: Incentive to buy Symantec products ever again

Summary: I have many years of experience using Symantec products. Their uninstallers are legendary for being junk. However, with Winfax Pro v10.x they have hit a new low. With THE standard being Windows XP, their Winfax product will usually not install correctly. Its scanner interface is confusing and often does not work well. If you are fortunate enough to get it to work at all, you will be lucky. Symantec goes to great lengths to hide the failings of their products. Note how few returns you get on a Google search. My advice? Buy nearly any fax program OTHER than Winfax. Anyone singing its virtues has a financial interest in the product, period.

Strengths: Once you can get the faxes you want to send into your outbox, it sends them very well.

Weaknesses: Buggy, tough to integrate with Word or Act 6. Probably released it before they debugged it.

Summary: I bought this because it was listed in the ACT 6 manual as integrated with ACT 6. However, when I installed it and spent many hours trying to get it to do a mail merge, and after digging around on both the ACT and Symantec web sites, I found that Symantec knows about this problem, and will send you (for $10 - why do we have to pay for their error, even a small amount?) a new version on a disk that corrects this problem. I haven't received this version yet, so I can't comment on it. I also haven't been able to do a mail merge with it on Microsoft Word 2002. The program also was changing the default printer on my system to Winfax every time I rebooted. Digging on their web site, I found a bulletin that told how to rewrite the registry that did avert this problem. There was another bug - too complicated to get into - that involved the cover sheet and the mail merge that I was able to solve after an hour or two with their web site. Their phone support is now fee only, so you have to either email them and wait 24 to 48 hours for a response, or pay a high per minute charge or $29.95 per incident to get things fixed. This is a buggy and difficult to integrate product that does send faxes well if you can ever figure out how to get them into your Outbox. But don't listen to their claims that this is a well-integrated product - you'll spend many hours trying to integrate it, and maybe you'll be successful (I haven't been).

Strengths: doesn't make computers light on fire?

Weaknesses: never works right - EVER

Summary: if you need winfax on one computer only you may be able to get away with it and have it work - occasionally.

If you need a fax host on a network with more than one computer ever sending faxes DON'T USE THIS SOFTWARE! It will never work right, the area code rules 'go away', clients cant connect, exchange rules in an area code won't accepting more than 65 entries, the list goes on and on. Pay the money upfront for a real network faxing solution or you WILL pay for it later.

There you've been warned. After 10 years in network support and administration EVERY support person I've ever talked to and mentioned winfax winces and says something like 'oh man that program SUCKS!'. Try it and see what response you get.

Strengths: Does everything it proclaims to do.

Weaknesses: None other than with 10.0 I occasionally had a scanner drive conflict. Seems to have gone away with time.

Summary: Current installation of 10.03 with XP Pro is only a few days old. There are a few things that MUST be done before installing 10.03. You must REMOVE any earlier version of Winfax and/or any other faxing programs, especially the little cheapo's on the market. You MUST DISABLE any programs access to the modem which usually occurs upon boot-up. If any program is accessing the modem the program will not install. You SHOULD disable any virus software running. Disconnect Internet access to protect from a virus while disabled. Go to program files (after you've removed Winfax or any other programs) and delete any signs of Winfax including Symantec/LiveUpdate. Restart your computer so that it is totally clean. In XP, set a restore point should you have any problems (but you shouldn't). Then run the Winfax installation. It should go thru just fine but I guarantee nothing. The reason I rate it as 4 stars is because of all of the things that must be done BEFORE you install the program. If Winfax would do all of these things for you, I would rate it 5 stars. If you get a bad or incomplete install, the program and your computer will cause you headaches. It is necessary to do the things I've mentioned. I'm a Winfax user for many years. The other programs are just "toys".

Weaknesses: Fax Sharing will not work with Windows XP SP2.

Summary: Peter Norton should be ashamed... Winfax 10.02, 10.03, 10.04, doesn;t matter, fax Sharing won't work with Windows XP Service Pack 2. I've received a few overly-technical solutions from Symantec, none successful.

Aren't you supposed to be able to just install software and it works?

That's apparently a novel concept to the Winfax team.
